Rule #3 never leave the dock without a Victor Knox knife. It's made for cutting rope in seconds. I've fished offshore for 21 years and we never leave without atleast 3 knives on board.
Am sorry, this may be fun to quite a few people, perhaps also to yourself, but this was a great video of HOW NOT TO SAIL. A boat that is basically not seaworthy, a crew that knows absolutely nothing, equipment that is failing, this is a disgrace. I worked as a pilot for the coast guard in the Caribbean for many years and flew countless SAR missions. Accidents can happen at any time and you (plus your boat) need to be prepared for that. You were obviously not prepared. Do yourself and all others on the water a favor: get this boat in seaworthy condition, repair all the equipment, make sure it functions, get sailing lessons, get lessons in navigation, rules of the sea etc etc. Your life and that of your family depends on it.
I hope this was the low point in your sailing career. You and Mary have a good attitude, but you had your family out there. That boats condition was sketchy when it left the dock.
I’m totally appalled, taking children out in the open ocean with an unprepared crew and boat. These people should be prosecuted for negligence. FYI, I am an experienced sailor with thousands of miles of experience. Absolutely appalling!
I've chosen to believe that this video was mostly filled with made-up drama for the camera and wasn't actually documenting all the dangers he put himself, Jamie, the crew of the Parlay, and his family in. I'm better off with 6 AGM batteries I have to constantly move around the cockpit instead of having an AIS! WHY BOTHER TO WRITE DOWN THE CHANNEL FOR THE RADIO OF YOUR ONLY LIFELINE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN?! I CAN PROBABLY JUST RUN INTO THEM OUT AT SEA!!!! WHY SHOULDN'T YOU WAIT FOR THE ONLY SAILOR WITH ANY EXPERIENCE TO GO BELOW AND DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT HE JUST SAID?!?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
The spirit of the channel is Epic Fail & Repair (with kids on board) which should have Ms of views. He should slow down the editing, it's a constant shooting info for 30mn.
Exactly 👍... As an older lady over 60 who was around car guys most of my life, I gotta say I am stressed out just trying to get my car in shape to drive 1000 miles away to move. But to just to see the shape of the motor mounts alone on both your engines tells me you are putting your family in danger. Put batteries out in the boat, in the rain? Hope their not lithium, all you need is to add explosions to your little unsafe adventure. Get your engines, boat in good shape & get better training! Your family deserves that. Taking your family out unprepared and as unskilled as you are, is foolish but taking your small children out in those conditions is inexcusable. Take heed of what the seasoned sailors had to say to you earlier in posts and keep your family safe!!!!
I don't know about everyone else but me, personally, you couldn't ask for a better friend, a better man then Jamie. He has done so much to help people realize their dreams - dude's just amazing. David - I think you, your wife and kids are amazing. Your courage, insanity and adventurous spirits are to be admired and will see you thru this incredible journey!
I always Love to see your videos. Learning how to navigate a sail and keeping everyone safe is a Captain's goal. You do learn quickly and have support from Mary too, which helps. After reading many comments i feel you already know the severity of having so many changes to your voyage and improvement of your crew and sea skills. Glad Jamie was onboard to assist. We all could use a well experienced mate. Sea school and more time on the water will make you safer and future sails more comfortable. Don't be afraid and always remember to learn from any mistakes you or even others make. My goal is to learn something new every day. Lines on deck look cool, but always better in a secure box somewhere. Great high seas fix with the zip ties. Ospho rust elimination will stop rust on mount plates and ready the surface for paint to assist against corrosion. Ospho is great in the engine room and any iron protection. But be careful in use and onboard storage. Be safe and we look forward to another adventure soon. Randolph and Traci

This reminds me on a surf trip in France we had a van we were travelling in. The brake shoes were too thin so the brake cylinder overextended, leaving us with emergency brakes only. We drove around like that for a week until we were cruising downhill into an intersection and my friend driving ripped the emergency brake pull clear out of the dash (it was a 70's European van). We flew through the intersection between cars and fortunately it was uphill on the other side. We rolled to a stop and began searching residential sheds and garages and found some baling wire and bound the brake cylinder back together. The brakes would work if we used a feather touch and not flex the baling wire too much. Good times.

I guess a butterfly net to catch your drone wouldn’t be hard enough. Line cutter on your prop shaft isn’t practical especially if you’re coastal cruising in notoriously polluted marinas. I always jump in the water with reflective material because it won’t attract game fish. I agree good batteries on a sailboat are worthless. Learning chart plotting is definitely a waste of navigational skills. I’d never buy an filtration compressor they just aren’t practical when surveying or cleaning your bottom, checking through hulls . Never have a 40 horse power outboard with a triller extension sitting ready to drop in seconds as auxiliary power. Never stow unnecessary dock lines when you’re underway, what could possibly go wrong? I wouldn’t use a PFD in confused seas either, especially if you already have boat filled with knowledgeable sailors. Radar and radar reflective are definitely overrated in shipping lanes. Yeppers, you’re definitely off to a good start.

how does a engine mount stop n engine i have seen cars with there engine trying to ripouta the engine bay but work fine maybe there some reasons that boats cant do that even so i feel like there would ve something on board you could rig up as a engine mount

Sailing ANYWHERE NEAR Colin is a guarantee of something if not everything breaking on your vessel. No vessel in history ( still afloat ) has had crappier luck than Parlay. I would never step foot on that vessel , its CURSED for a Davy Jones locker ending. 😂
Haha. Kinda true they’ve had a bunch of issues! But they’ve always come out the other side stronger! Funny thing is that once something breaks on parlay, I can pretty much count on it to break on my boat within a couple months.
How do you buy a boat and get insurance/loan with no prior sailing experience/log/certification? I'm about to go get my asa 101-114 to even start that process because everyone has said that I can basically kiss insurance goodbye (let alone any part of financing) if I don't have SOME kind of cert/training.

Gives me confidence, if you guys made it like this, then even I can do this!
course you can bro. most people act like they were born knowing how to sail... but everyone starts some where. If we listened to the average person we would have never even bought a boat!
fear the ocean nah fear of mother nature no fear only respect fear doesn't help
Thank God you guys are still alive...wow..
thx mike! it was a bit hairy there for a bit!
I've missed you Shih family!! Good to see you back!
dude your video are amazing your deserve more, exited for next video also i recommend you changing those batteriers you have as littium batterie as their 10x time lighter and way more efficient
thanks voz! and yes, we're going full lithium soon!
Just found your channel and looking forward to follow your journey.
Good to see you are back !
yoyoyo! how was the miami boat show this year?! we couldnt make it!
@@david_shih it was big like always, was looking for you at the Catamaran section, LOL
@@Boatingbellavita im going next year!!!!
Trust your boat, can endure a lot more than many can think about it
Missed your videos so much.
I m so happy to see you posting again!
Adventures 😂 .. Thanks to Jamie 👍
he's a legend!
just watched below the deck and was like....this algorithm is insane!
no way...they know everything!!!!
Groovy episode. Not quite planned great, but in all fairness it was your first real trip. Next time make a check list of things to do before sailing and then double check it with an experienced sailor.
yeah checklist is the way to go, too many things to forget
Hey, you are back. I haven't gotten your notifications...
I’m gobsmacked!
gobsmacked good or gobsmacked bad?!
I want the complete Truth… REALLY😂😂
Great spirit guys!!!
Just try to keep it safe and have back up plans for emergencies please.
ENJOY!!!
will do elier! we had lost of safety and emergency comms aboard!
Why don't you have AIS? A basic good AIS costs $300-500
Why don't you have radar? A basic good radar costs $500-1500 (used) and $1700+ new
we'll get it eventually, but didn't have the budget for it at the time!
how does a engine mount stop n engine i have seen cars with there engine trying to ripouta the engine bay but work fine maybe there some reasons that boats cant do that even so i feel like there would ve something on board you could rig up as a engine mount
I started looking for boat action .. when I stopped hearing from la Vega bond folks // colons friends / the guy that s u supposed to be following 🤔 no s them ,,
I must say .. u are telling way more info .. with what's going on with different things 👍🏾👍🏾
Like captain Ron said, if it's going to happen it is going to happen out there.
truest thing ever said about boat life!
Absolutely awesome on so many levels! So happy for you guys and do great to see Jamie and Colin! Your video quality/sound crispness/ editing and overall camera presence is next level. That goes for everyone! Cheers and big congrats!
dude your videos are super cool. i have a project maybe we can colab on.... any interest in a R/C mini dinghy (big enough to hold a kid) how do i get in touch?
dude, you put triples on a skiff tooo??? ive been searching up vids on how to do that...i want to extend the transom and do that on our new dinghy! super cool!
@@david_shih thanks so much David! I really appreciate it! And HECK YEAH, let’s throw some ideas around! I’ll shoot you an email, cheers!
Nice to get a video!
How do you buy a boat and get insurance/loan with no prior sailing experience/log/certification? I'm about to go get my asa 101-114 to even start that process because everyone has said that I can basically kiss insurance goodbye (let alone any part of financing) if I don't have SOME kind of cert/training.
Where there is a sailing boat, there is no need to use a motor except for the entrance and exit of the marina.
The making of sailors... all the best, respect the sea...
Really enjoyed this latest episode from the History Channel. Is Jamie coming back to chaperone full time? If not we will need weekly proof that the kids are ok, photo with a newspaper is probably the best we can hope for at the rate you edit videos aye Dave 😂. #goodthingstaketime
hahaha i like that hashtag! lol... history channel... more "up to date" content coming soon!
Man, the inspection should have caught those mounts, i would think.
Jamie is probably my favorite TH-cam sailor. "Didn't want to kill the kids!" 😂
he's my fav too!
I don't know why, but this didn't show up in my feed for a month? Wth youtube? Did you get the Milwaukee power tools like we were talking about?
I wish man!!!! Unfortunately we’re not big enough to interest them yet. How you been?
David, Mary and crew love your honesty, love chanel, keep up the good work.
Don't let the pressure of youtube effect you relationships or health
LOL - good to see this film, David!
The kids will be fully grown by the time the next vid is released. 😂
this one made me laugh out loud. hopefully not!
Mate, I've lived aboard a lagoon for 4 years now and tbh, you really need someone to go through you boat with you and get it seaworthy.
There are some things you just cant fuck about with.
Awesome video David, great to see you back mate
Yep.. the kids .. being out there.. makes me nervous 😶😒
I had to laugh right off the bat seeing you two unable to communicate.
I hope you continue putting out these videos. You guys are a hoot and your editing is great. You'll definitely be one of the top sailing channels if you stick with it. We're rooting for you.
aw thanks rick...just need to figure out how to do this weekly...
What you call garden sheers are actually TIN SNIPS lol.
oooooh that's what those were. no idea where they even came from!
@@david_shih Haha :)
I like your videos!
Dude...proud of you. So many challenges and you made it through. Seems like a rite of passage in both literal and figurative sense.
He is alive😅
I hope y'all are doing ok and weren't affected by Hurricane Beryl
hey jim! a bit of solarpanel and sail damage!
This is why they build bluewater boats. Rope cutters- failsafe mounts. Small details make a boat safer. Funny yanmar mounts are not fail safe ?
Jamie is a legend he deserves his own boat.. great content 🙏👍👍🇬🇧
im sure someone is just going to give him one 1 day.
Garden Shears? Tin Snips my man.
aaah,.....is that what those are?
Great to see you back, Dave! You're an inspiration!
19:36 wait a minute. Didn’t you tell me you were worried the mounts would not come out because they were rusted so bad??
