Jinnah: His Successes, Failures and Role in History
    Book by Ishtiaq Ahmed
Mohammad Ali Jinnah has been both celebrated and reviled for his role in the Partition of India, and the controversies surrounding his actions have only increased in the seven decades and more since his death. Ishtiaq Ahmed places Jinnah's actions under intense scrutiny to ascertain the Quaid-i-Azam's successes and failures and the meaning and significance of his legacy. Using a wealth of contemporary records and archival material, Dr Ahmed traces Jinnah's journey from Indian nationalist to Muslim communitarian, and from a Muslim nationalist to, finally, Pakistan's all-powerful head of state. How did the ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity become the inflexible votary of the two-nation theory? Did Jinnah envision Pakistan as a theocratic state? What was his position on Gandhi and federalism? Asking these crucial questions against the backdrop of the turbulent struggle against colonialism, this book is a path-breaking examination of one of the most controversial figures of the twentieth century.
Ishtiaq Ahmed is professor emeritus of political science at Stockholm University and visiting professor, Government College University, Lahore. He is the author of several books including Pakistan: The Garrison State-Origins, Evolution, Consequences (1947-2011).
Ishtiaq Ahmed (Urdu: اشتیاق احمد;) is a Swedish political scientist and author of Pakistani descent. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Stockholm University. He is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Stockholm University.

What a shame that two lawyers whose information is based on state propaganda were chosen to debate a historian and scholar like Dr. Ishtiaq.
Dr. Ishtiaq's discomfort is palpable during the discussion.

What was Jinnah's contribution to Indian Freedom Struggle? How many movements he started against British Raj and how many times he went to jail? - Nil/Sannata.... Anyway, Jinnah did a great service to Hindus as a whole by creating Pakistan. After all he was a converted Hindu just one generation back, and he didn't forget to serve his ancestor's faith. After 800 years of colonialism, Hindus urgently needed at least two dustbins to dump the garbage created during that period. And Jinnah gave it.

      1) There was no Indian Freedom Struggle. 2) He didnt commit any crime so he didnt go to Jail. 3) Jinnah always said that he is asking for partition for both Hindus and Muslims. Subcontinent Muslims, Dalits, Christian, Zorastrians fought for partition. Hindus didnt gain much from partition as it is not complete.

I am an Indian citizen from Kerala state and a Syrian Christian ( R.C) by faith.
The young man who is on the right side of the stage seemed to be educated, but intoxicated with religious bigotry, blind to see the facts & truth. This is the case with large majority of, even among the so called educated young people of Pakistan. The mindset is deeply narrow & fundamentalistic.
After watching this debate and several other discussions on social media recently , I understand the significance of the comment Jawaharlal Nehru made to an American journalist later on after independence, that Muslim League and forces behind it would have been detrimental to the progressive ideas & reforms and development of India if they remained with India .
Soon after gaining independence, India started the mission of institution building & reforms, while Pakistan launched setting up thousands of Madrassas & Mosque in every nook & cranny of Pakistan. The end result is evidently visible now.
'Eating is the proof of the pudding'. After 75 years, history shows who was right and who erred.
So partition, in a way, was a blessing in disguise.

In a ancient civilization like India where different religions thoughts have evolved over centuries, have a different dialect every 50 km and so many professions creating casts in older times and unions today.
Pakistan is an example of what will happen when you fracture society .. so many lives are lost in 1947 followed by losses because of wars, proxy wars etc.

The younger speaker (on Jinnah) type Pakistanis are suitable for India's agenda. Eventhough they are confused and misguided. At the same time I do understand what they are trying to accomplish. Bottomline, Jinnah was a ayash, ambitious, person. Never sacrificed anything like other well-known leaders, like jail. Never wrote any books or even letter to the editor. Also, in personal life, there is ample indication of low morals. Married a friend's daughter who was younger by a big margin. So, defending a person like that requires hard work and creativity. So people like this younger speaker have worked hard.

However something that people knew even in 1947 that by accepting that many separatists mindset Muslims in India you left termites in this beautiful nation. Ever other religion is okay except this. The world has moved on except these hippocrates.
Jinnah was the Mir Jaffer of the 20th century. Who has a flawed vision then and Muslims all over have it today. None of the Muslim nations have democracy. They do not give rights to minorities in countries they rule as majority, however want more privileges wherever they are in the minority. Even privileges are okay they demand a separate rule of law for themselves.

I agree with all of the Indian criticism of the way in which this talk was held. But if you scrutinize closely, most of the things that Asad Raheem (Young Speaker/Barrister) stands for converge with Ishtiaq Sb's desires for Pakistan going forward. He blames Mullahs for redefining the meaning of Pakistan, admits that the current state system has failed, believes in a secular model of legislation going forward and supports good relations with India. What he thinks of Congress is of little concern at this juncture in history as Ishtiaq Sb has himself admitted in his talk on Blackhole that a merger is no longer a viable option. But I concede that Ishtiaq Sb was given the lesser time of the two and should have had the right to conclude the debate rather than the young man. About the applause, I think we all know. 😂😂

Inspite doing so much for momins and killed in process , MK gandhi still consider hindu nationalist leader . Indian politicians should learn from that your appeasement won't give you brownie points and people for whom you had done so much , still vandalize your idols abroad wherever they find it.

The fact lie in the numbers - India is still united as it was in 1947 prospering and it's minority population is growing. We probably have more Muslims in India than Pakistan has. They are not migrating to Pakistan or even aspiring to 😀.
How about Hindu, Sikhs, Parsis and Christian's in Pakistan? Leave these communities what about Ahmedi and Shias. Bengali left them in 1971 😀.

Why Pakistan is relevant? It's for Indians as well.
There is no way we can divide people on religious, linguistic or cast lines ... In a ancient civilization like India where different religions thoughts have evolved over centuries, have a different dialect every 50 km and so many professions creating casts (in older times and unions today).
Pakistan is an example of what will happen when you fracture society .. so many lives are lost in 1947 followed by losses because of wars, proxy wars etc. Retaeded growth of India, however it is evolving and growing against a failed state named Pakistan which is still finding its roots. They will live to see how they are different from India.
India should and will never reintegrate them as that will create more problems and Pakistan because of its origin will always rot.
