Sorry Cohh, but dancing around the devs isn't going to help anyone. "Jim Ryan bad" is a cop out. Yes, sure making it not free to play was a mistake, but nobody played the game in a open beta as well. And Sony's live service push is dumb. Blaming corpos is easy.
But the devs were a major part of what went wrong. Remember for most of the time this was being made, the people running the game were all developers on big hits that moved away to start their own studio and make their dream game.... Away from the corpos. They made a game nobody wanted and it still would have been a game nobody wanted in 2015.

Another thing about the argument 'corpo bad, corpo at fault' is that when the development started the studio wasn't owned by Sony at all. Firewalk was owned by ProbablyMonsters and Sony bought them in April 2023.
How are all the mistakes attributed to Corpo's when they didn't own it for about 7 years?
All the (vocal) devs stood by this game until nobody liked it, then it's suddenly the corpo's fault.

    • @Drebin2293

He's not only talking about Jim Ryan. He's talking about the designers. The people with control at Firewalk. We're talking about middle management and higher. Regular devs don't have any sort of pull at the company unless they're shit hot at what they do. We're talking about the top 10% of people at Firewalk.
If you know anything about game dev at that scale, it can consist of hundreds of people. You can start with a designer that designs a character, down to an artist that further fleshes out that character in 2d stills, and then once approved down to a 3d artist that makes the model, and then if that's approved down to an animator that finishes rigging the model and does a few animations for testing and then submits that for approval. It can take more than a two dozen people just to get one character made sometimes. Sometimes more. Sometimes you can have many people making animations and outfits for the same character at the same time. It just depends on your resources and the production timeline.

I remember watching the trailer for Concord and going "Huh, this is mildly interesting. Is it a heist game? Does it have stealth? Might be worth keeping an eye on this one.",
and then I noticed the number conspicuously designed characters in the trailer and I thought "Wait a minute, single player games don't have this many characters. Oh no, is this a fugking hero shooter?".
So when the trailer switched over to gameplay and confirmed my fears I immediately wrote off the game and forgot about it.
When are these publishers and developers realize that in a creative industry they have to let the creative people make the decisions? When artists are so micro-managed that they are more like technical drawers than artists then it's not very surprising that what they produce has as much soul as a stop sign or a route diagram.

They view them as slobs in a dark basement, and think they'll buy the same thing they've bought before, as long as you put it in front of them with some shiny bells and whistles. And if you want people to buy your product, you have to respect your customer, especially once they have many other options.

The key with chasing the trend is that you have to be fast, improve on who “inspired” you, have a good twist, and/or make a rebalance of what was there before that is so good that it seems fresh.
Some good examples of this Gamefreak/Nintendo got inspired by the success that Atlus was having with Megami Tensei, so they wanted to make a kid friendly version, thus Pokemon was born… this got leaked halfway through Pokemon Red being developed and Bandai Namco got word so they decided to get “inspired” by Shin Megami Tensei to rework a little game they were already developing called Digimon World.
Then we have the Slay the Spire devs who were disappointed that Wizards of the Coast never made any more Rougelike MTG games, so they made their own….. which then “inspired” Monster Train (which is one of my favorite games to this day.) who did something fresh with the formula.
Rambling too much so let me summarize: Concord was too late to the party, played worse than its predecessors, and was in no way fresh.

@@Kizmar except that's false. Ubisoft has been publishing the same game every year for the past decade and a half and gamers still buy them. There's a new call of duty every year and they keep breaking sales records. Skyrim has been rereleased yearly and someone keeps buying them. "Gamers" might see through things, but they keep giving companies money for the same derivative soulless junk every year.
Truth is that big budget games are a massive financial investment to develop and unless you have money to burn the safest way to recoup and get a return on that investment is to make a thing that has worked previously. Same as with Hollywood films: there's a reason it's been nothing but marvel schlock for the past decade: it's proven to make money, so studios are willing to take the risk. Concord failed spectacularly, but it's an outlier. There's over 20 Assassin's Creeds, about 10 CoDs and countless other franchises that prove you don't need innovation to succeed l, just good marketing (which is where Concord failed, barely anyone heard about it).

It blew my mind, the very people I thought were the “good guys” were simply deranged and irrational.

I find it interesting when companies are so intent on listening to player feedback after they crap out a game maybe no one wants; crazy idea, but why not poll the community BEFORE you spend $100 million? Make a demo, run an alpha like BG3, do anything before spending that money and then be mad when no one wanted the thing you made. While Nintendo may not be perfect, they will send me surveys to see what I like, did I enjoy the game I recently purchased or have been playing. It seems like a significant part of the gaming community kinda stopped taking input from players until after they made their game, which makes me feel a bit less sympathetic with all these layoffs. Leadership needs to own this and take more input from their fans BEFORE taking expensive risks that could shut down their entire studio; it costs almost nothing to post an open survey for fans to fill out to get a feel for what people want or what they enjoy playing.

Concord and many games over the last few years have some of the worst artistic direction and design in the history of all media. This is what happens when people with no talent get into positions of affecting artistic decisions. This phenomenon is not exclusive to disconnected management because that has always negatively affected the production of art. This is specifically due to DEI practices and people with social and political agendas being put into positions of power based on their ideology , race, or gender, instead of skill and objective talent. Not only do they lack the artistic acumen, but the problem is amplified due to a social/ political agenda being pushed above gameplay, design, art, and, in many cases, an already established fanbase. This is what happens when bullshit politics gets injected into every aspect of our lives, even the aspects we used to use to get away from this garbage.

However the core gameplay loop is extremely boring, overdone, unoriginal and designed by committee. That's why it failed there was no passion in the game, just a generic safe hero shooter with no identity of its own. If concord was a sci fi heist/rpg story based game like even guardians of the galaxy..it coulda been big. But it feels like someone stepped in half way through and said "no that wont make money make it a live service hero shooter so we can nickle and dime everyone." And that was the end of concord. Concord was basically "DEI: The Game." People didn't even want to try this, because it looked like "woke" nonsense from the start. Who wants to play as any of those characters? I think this game screams internal studio political issues.
Maybe seated and exacerbated by real world politics but moreso office politics.
The character designs are the biggest indicator of this to me.
You obviously have some very competent artists actually doing renders and modeling.
But if I had to take a guess either the leadership or a faction in the art team formed a cabal which hugboxed their own ideas while shutting down all legitimate criticism.
No collaboration is how you end up with character designs that appeal to so few people.
And I would bet DEI played a part in it. Not because the characters are diverse.
No its because the surface level values of acceptance attract generally nice, welcoming people.
But also attract status hungry bullies who can use it as a cudgel to get ahead and force their will on those people.
So yeah. Probably a cabal of people between art/marketing/management who bulled and status gamed their way to the top then using those same processes to shut down all dissent and legitimate criticism of their half-baked ideas.

Isn't Hyenas bigger? Both same genre game, same year, and from Japan corporations spend masses of money for them (Sony and Sega). But Concord was released and then shot down, while Hyenas was shot down before release, since they realised no one is interested about the game.
(Hyenas was developed by British company Creative Assembly, which is famous from Total War games, but they also done other kind of games, like sport games. But their gold mine is Total War series. And that series suffered for long time because some one wanted them to make games like Hyenas. But once Hyenas was executed, it seems that they actually started really improving Total War games - Total War: Warhammer III and Total War: Pharaoh. And they now started to do, what players demanded them to do for years...Shame that they killed years ago Total War: (Romance of) Three Kingdoms (and angered Chinese audience which really loved the game, but wanted game properly done), and then they cancelled second game in the series, seemingly because they angered Chinese audience by stopping developing and fixing bugs of first game. Biggest (or at least most popular) mod for the TW:Three Kingdoms seems to mod which focus on fixing bugs and developing game as it should done by CA. This mod is mainly done by Chinese people, but others can use it as well. And now Chinese game companies are making similar games, since CA abandoned their goldmine. Only TW: Warhammer 3 reached similar numbers as TW: Three Kingdoms. For example TW: Rome II, which been really popular, is much less popular than TW: Three Kingdoms. I mean, it is one thing to spend tons of money for game what no one is not interested, and other thing to kill projects (and under fund such) what are really really popular and liked, in genre where there is no much competition (yet!). Now CA seems to learned, maybe even their owner, Sega did...? But that needed peasant rebellion (=player rebellion) in their last gold mine, TW: Warhammer 3, and poor sales for TW: Pharaoh, and facing the fact that no one is interested about their Hyenas game, which ate all resources from other games...)

I didn't even try it during the free open beta test they did. While there are a bunch of secondary reasons I already didn't like it that some may scoff at, the primary ones are what most people share. It looked uninteresting. It did nothing different and didn't add anything to the formula. It was a hero shooter with abilities, which at this point is the bare minimum for a hero shooter to the point that that is what defines the genre's baseline. I'm also going to go and potentially put a target on my back: the designs of a lot of characters, not all, but a lot, give me the impression that they were INTENTIONALLY made to look less than appealing. My eyes are not bleeding from their sockets, but the characters either look average or somewhat bad/ugly almost on purpose.
What's funny is that there are a few hero shooters coming out in the future that I am interested in.
Marvel Rivals has Marvel characters and has an interesting artstyle, as opposed to Generic Realism Filter #37. It's not everyone's favorite style, but I find it fun.
Fragpunk is another hero shooter aiming to come out, and while the artstyle and design isn't SUPER unique, the trailer at least hints that it's a hero shooter that incorporates multiple gameplay elements that shake things up. Will it be good? I dunno, maybe not...but I'm interested, which is enough to get me to want to at least try it. Something that I cannot say about Concord.

I want to point out that Firewalk had been working on this game before they were bought out. Whoever was the studio head and game director, decided on this project 8 years ago. All Sony did was, "Oh looks great, here's some money to be under our brand!"

Meanwhile Valve are making... yep you guessed it... a hero shooter and a bad looking one at that, I expected better from them. Such originality.
