@@SioxerNikita Really it was just the bad designs and price tag that killed it. If it had been released for free it would’ve at least had double the current players, which isn’t much at all lmao. From what I’ve heard, the gameplay wasn’t even that bad, with no notable glitches on release. Was it extraordinary? No, but it was at least ‘decent’ gameplay wise. Ofc, this is all second knowledge I’ve heard from commenters in YT comment sections, so take it with a grain of salt. On to Japan Studios, they were at least useful for making unique console exclusives, which the PS5 is in dire need of. All they have right now is Demon’s Souls remake, Spider-Man 2, FF Rebirth, R&C Rift Apart, and Stellar Blade. FF16 is coming to PC this month I believe, and games like GOW Ragnarok, which should’ve been PS5 exclusives, were backported to the PS4. Having only 5-ish exclusives 4 years after the console has come out is just plain bad, especially when you consider that Sony is already talking about making the PS6. Japan Studios could’ve pumped out 1 or 2 games at least by this point if they had been given funding. Really, the one thing Japan Studios should’ve been doing was making a Bloodborne remaster or remake, potentially aided by Bluepoint. While most of the games mentioned above have little to no interest in them, Bloodborne still has a decent demand from Fromsoft fans. A risky play would’ve been to make a Bloodborne 2 without FromSoft’s help. People would be hesitant, but there would still be hype largely from Elden Ring’s success from wider audiences. Also Gorillian is just a joke word, you don’t have to keep putting it in quotation marks lmao.
@SioxerNikita I do and don't agree with the voting with your wallet argument nowadays. On the one hand the casual market is vast and will buy almost anything as long as it has a name they recognize. Swhy Sports games do well despite sometimes actually losing features between launches. On the other hand, games like Hi-Fi Rush and Dawngate have great sales/acclaim with decent player bases but still get studios shut down for not making 1 billion dollars/League of Legends money. On the mysterious third hand, there's also the vocal cynics who constantly undermine boycotts and such. "The game is gonna sell anyways so it doesn't make sense to commit to a boycott" See every Hoyoverse controversy aka people that still play the game but are Free to Play(Until a character they like is released then they decide they did enough and drop 1000 dollars on the game.)
Adjusted for inflation and considering the cost of the cartridges themselves it did cost a similar amount, but at least they got back about 40% of their budget in sales A 60% loss was considered a catastrophe for atari, and now we fot concord not even grossing 1% of the budget in revenue lmao
7:35 Part of the reason those games succeeded is because they had "characters that are gay" not "gay characters". Being gay wasn't their entire character.
Okay, so uh, I got some bad news, - Sony did *not* in fact, spend 100 million dollars on just one live service game that failed... They have 10 live service games in the pipeline. Each with their own 100 million dollar budget, I imagine. That makes it what, one billion dollars?

I don't think anyone knows why people play fortnite. Fun gameplay, good art style, collabs people care about, and is free to play. And most importantly, updates at least every week or so (story quests or battle pass skins coming out) to keep people playing.
Not to mention the irony of how so many people tend to shit on Fortnite, but it's literally a successful game regardless of how "cringe" they may think it is. And the reason for it is because it's a fun game. Idk why such a concept flies by developers heads nowadays when they attempt to jump in on the live service hype train that Fortnite sets up so well
do you think this is going to make Sony pull the "in case of emergency break glass" button and authorize a bloodborne remaster or something yet? Seriously that game routinely trends on twitter like twice a month with people begging Sony for it since Fromsoft doesn't hold the rights to the IP. If Sony wanted money, all they gotta do is drop a 4 second trailer of the Doll saying "Oh Good Hunter"
How the hell has Bloodbourne not been ported to PC yet? Elden Ring sold like 10 million copies on PC in less than a month if I recall correctly. Sony’s practically sitting on oil.
Hell, I imagine most of the people screaming about “woke” wouldn’t hate so hard if it was at least well written characters with a compelling story and good gameplay. And yes, I’m well aware just how hard those elements are to bring together. The key ingredient that I think most studios have forgotten is they need to write a good character first, and then add the rest. Ellen Ripley of Alien for instance, was originally a male character. They flipped to a female character but changed nothing about her character. Are people screaming about Alien being “Woke?”
People like that will just shift the goalposts if the media is good because otherwise their argument that "anything with a prominent minority and/or a woman I can't jack off to directly correlates with media being bad" just falls apart. And again, culture war nonsense is a shitty distraction from any real problems present.
It might shock companies to learn that queer people can tell when a game is making empty appeals to them. We deal with it every June. If its painfully obvious a game is just trying to pander to us, we won't care about it
I find a lot of stuff people complain about being "woke" are the result of a bad character, not the cause, but they don't care, it gives them a free goal to dunk on people different to them. Also the whole "Anti-woke" movement has been proven to be completely disingenuous, they'll rail on something at announcement if it has a twinge of deviation from them, but if sells well, they'll instead claim it supports their values, despite denouncing it mere months, weeks or even days before. I love the people screaming "go woke, go broke" It implies they'd pay for and play a shit game if the characters wore ugly red maga hats and screamed racial slurs on Truth Social at eachother.
“People’s jobs are at stake!” is a pretty weak argument if you consider that a number of those people had eight consistent years of good employment in a a contract gig industry.
I think another issue with concord is that it was in development for 8 years, which just so happens to be the year that overwatch released, which was a time at which hero shooters did cost money to play but in 8 years the gaming landscape changed so concord was a game that no one wanted to buy that was 8 years too late for the type of game it was trying to be
@@InfinitySevens That's the point. If it had been good, it would have seen fine sales. The reason it failed was not because it cost money. The attitude of "If it costs money, it will fail, because there are free good alternatives" doesn't explain why WoW can still sell... Doesn't explain why all singleplayer games aren't gacha or otherwise free to play and monetized.
@@CoolKiller28 I never said you said it was good, but even a game that is outdated on release can still be made as a good idea and be successful. Half-Life 2 didn't really "invent" anything new, outside of the gimmick of physics based gameplay (and yet still wasn't the first), it was graphically outdated like hell, and the engine was about 3-4 years out of date, due to the very long development time (got a lot of updates over the years though), and was still massively successful. Even compared to contemporary FPS they didn't even really innovate particularly much (outside the physics gimmick), but it had solid mechanics, good writing, interesting characters, an interesting world, etc. So my first point still stands... That it is "outdated" doesn't mean it couldn't have been successful. The biggest issue it had, by far, is not that it is a Hero Shooter 8 years later. Frankly, it is probably the best time it could've come out, with plenty of people playing Overwatch being disillusioned with the game. It could've been "the Overwatch slayer" if it had actually been a well made game.
The Concorde ultimately became a profitable venture until the post-9/11 climate reduced air traffic and its only major incident in 2000 finally put the planes into pasture Can't say the same for the other two Concords without the "e"
In all honesty, "the quickest shutdown of a live service ever" is the only commendable aspect of the Concord debacle. Whoever made the decision deserves recognition; as you said, in the modern landscape it's an act of courage. I agree with the opinions in this video all around. Congrats on being a great voice of reason!
Even The Day Before managed to generate some initial hype. Never have I seen a AAA game arriving dead the moment it was revealed in the State of Play, yet somehow was condemned to apathy AND also a continuously low reputation all the way to its death due to the constant ridicule among the tiny groups of people that care about it. It was a truly unique march of humiliation for a AAA game, its studio and its publisher.
About the development team gotten let go, sadly it was pretty inevitable for AAA gaming. Even if the game reach astronomic sales, if it didn't reach the targeted sales, the company will consider it a failure.
10:55 Neil Drugman and Anita Sarkeesian happened, buddy. That's why we haven't got any new games and just recycled TLOU for the last 8 years or so. (Remaster of 2 a game backwards compatible that already had a lot of backlash) Like. When was the last Uncharted released?
Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin will always be the true heart of Naughty Dog. All Neil Cuckmann managed to do was suck up to Hollywood even more than Kojima and gut ND’s output to just TLOU rehashes. Even then, TLOU1 wasn’t even made by him, he just took all the credit in the long run because he’s a talentless hack
So I agree with everything said in this video...except one. Buddy, Astro Bot is *never* coming to PC. It absolutely is not. That is the most console exclusive game I can possibly imagine. Like, it's not just that it's owned by Sony, it's that the entire identity of the game revolves around the Playstation, and especially the PS5. All the VIP bots are characters from Playstation games, or series that were classically at home on the Playstation (like RE or MGS). The literal central mission of the game is repairing a PS5 because it's the Bots' home base. Your main mode of transportation is a Dualsense controller. The bonus challenge missions are modeled after the face buttons of a Playstation controller. I have never been more certain of anything in my life, than I am right now saying that Astro Bot is NEVER coming to PC.
I still think it’s at least possible. Not only did someone from Asobi compliment the idea of a PC port, but pretty much EVERY first party PS5 game besides Demons’ Souls and TLOU2 Remastered either got a PC port, or we know will be getting a PC port thanks to leaks like Spider-Man 2. Hell, if anything the abundance of PS5 imagery in the game serves as a decent advertisement for the console itself. Doesn’t help that Sony released a Windows program specifically to take advantage of DualSense features.
@ToastyMann On the one hand, yes, Sony has been more willing to port their first party games to PC in recent years. On the other hand...those are, like...NORMAL video games. Not games whose entire identity is tied into the console they're on. Ghost of Tsushima or God of War could exist just fine on any system, outside of the actual porting. But Astro Bot is so tied to the Playstation lineage, and the PS5 specifically, it'd be insane to imagine playing it on a PC.
To put things into perspective, the average lifespan of a housefly is 28 days. Concord lasted about 14. A HOUSEFLY OUTLIVED THIS GAME. MULTIPLE OF THEM ACTUALLY.
The one thing I like about when something like this happens is that it’s the only time TH-cam actually recommends smaller channels to see the other people’s commentary and so far yours is my favorite.
"Please someone think of the poor devs" Maybe if you spent a second thinking about your customers and what they wanted this wouldnt happen. If i get served rancid food at a restaurant should i think of the poor chef who might lose his job when i complain?
In AAA I can't recall a worse disaster, but overall? Nah. Concord lasted just under two weeks, didn't The Day Before shut down in like, 5 days? After years of hyping it up amidst bizarre and shady practices?
My guess is that since all nine classes have unique silhouettes, abilities and personalities. Most people assume it is a hero shooter. Even though this game existed before that term was even a thing.
Honestly, I think it’s the earliest example of what could be considered a “hero shooter”. Obviously it’s got a lot of unique elements compared to the games that would follow, but hey, a distinct cast of characters with their own traits and arsenals sounds close enough.
"Class based shooter" is more like battlefield with some minor specialisations "Hero shooter" is when all your kit is personalised for the character. So, TF2 is a hero shooter, but the "heroes" are called classes
8:49 Comparing 74% positives out of 334 reviews to a 59% positives out of 102,858 which translates to roughly 60,686 positives against 247 is downright hysterical
There's a third metric to see just how good or bad a game is.... seeing how much R34 there is. Yeah it may sound like I'm trolling but I'm not, in the 11 days there was no R34 of Concord made.
Who could've imagined a game of this quality would just crash and burn so fucking hard as it did? Worst part? Doubt Sony's gonna listen and keep trying to push these expensive slockfests out in desperate ploy to win worthless awards. Welcome to the American Gaming Industry 2024!
4:10 no no, im actually on the same boat as you with that stuff. Its essentially become almost no different than when media of the past decades was called "problematic" or "misogynistic" some years back and all that crap for the most pathetic of reasons that showed a combined lack of understanding of source material, and a lack of care for the legacy that had been put into those things. This game really was just, quite the shitshow all right But hey! At least it gives us something to laugh at. As an artist it gives me an excerise in seeing what doesn't work in character design. 8:10 I actually felt that too regarding Concord defenders. Their defenses are like, not even defenses ("i liked it!" Like, that's not a defense bruh. How about throwing ad hominems? Or blowing off criticisms, truly mature debate in progress). This games failure was entirely its own fault and Sonys.
Please remember that on the low to high end the amount of money Sony paid for this game not including the studio was 400 million, there is rumors that they paid an extra 200 - 600 just for the studio alone so that means they potentially paid anywhere between 500 million to a billion dollars
@@Vincent_Rabbit That’s actually a common misconception. The film’s cancellation and The Emoji Movie being greenlit happened close to each other but the events weren’t directly connected.
This is a fantastic video. While I disagree with some points, overall it was amazing. Maybe one day you’ll make a video on the game my indie studio is making.
Have you seen Dustborn? That's another example of what being "woke" looks like. A game where "cancelling" and "triggering" are part of the gameplay. And it was made by people who were SO AGAINST TRUMP (despite being norwegians) that they had to make a game to cope. You can love or hate the Orange Man, not my business. Buuuut making a game because of the presidential elections of ANOTHER COUNTRY is more than pathetic. Also, it was funded by the norwegian government. Who could guess?
I've seen dustborn. Can't escape discussion of it, just like Concord. I didn't really care though, looks like shit, developers are probably really shitty people. I just think Concord's collapse is ten times more interesting than one bad single player game. The worst thing about Dustborn is that it was funded with taxpayer dollars.
Astrobot is the equivalent of Wii Sports it isn't a game itself more like a tech demo. But it represents the absolutely depressing panorama of the PS5 catalogue. Just two now three more familiar platformers. When in PS2 or 3 we had games for all publics made. Not just the MACHO MAN GAMERS that hate cartoonish games for being too childish. PlayStation became the new Xbox.
There is an opening in the hero shooter market. Overwatch is at the lowest point it has ever been, apex is bleeding out steadily, Rainbow6 is admittedly doing well but has alot of attrition with its userbase, paladins is on deaths door, TF2 is almost unplayable. Val is doing well, thats about it but it is flat-lining. If there were no opening Deadlock would not break 100k users and tencent would not make marvel
12:00 people also forget those numbers aren't just copies sold, but copies send to retailers and how many they shipped (which is added to the sale numbers)
"Woke" is not "brown people exist" or "gay people exist". You coul be gay in Fallout 2, Street Fighter 2 is from 93~ and have characters from all over the world and yet i never heard them described as woke, this a new specific modern politics is what people are talking about. Obviously you cannot put in a box such a complex topic so it will always be dismissed by people who wants to dismiss it - "there's nothing to see here, move along". For most people "woke" is not an argument like in a debate sense - it's more of a vibe a game is giving to you when you look at it. It's often assosiated with creators hating their core audience. And since it's a vibe - i don't actually need to prove anybody anything for it to affect my purcases. What i think people are wrong is when they describe chracters of Concord as not memorable. They're, just not in a good way. It's almost spectacular how wrong everything is in their design, they're the Room of character designs, it needs to be studied of what not to do. What really frustrating to me is people talking about these devs loosing their jobs as if they're were not recieving paychecks for this years of developement, this is not some indie devs who took loans to finish their game and now they're staking everything on it. People who lost money are Sony, and while i'm not going to feel bad about big corpro - it's them who loosing money - devs of Concord was paid for their work already - for their bad game that nobody wants they recieved ALOT of money making it - how it's THEM who's i need to feel sorry for?
I really don't understand them trying to make multiple live service games. I consider myself a gamer through and through, but I only got time for one GaaS game at a time. Multiple GaaS games, regardless of how different they are, is going to result in cannibalism.
If you want to know if a game is woke or not, just do 2 things. 2 very simple, indisputable thing. 1, listen to the devs talk about their game and 2, see if it pushes "The Message" or not. If either one is true, congrats, you got a woke game on your hand and 99% of the time, it will bomb horribly.
This is a big historical event in the game industry holy fuck, this is so fucked up - like they we're using those 8 years to get a fucking world record in how to make a bad game. Hopefully this won't be repeated again.
To add to the marketing stuff Sony pulled for this crap, they also paid for a slot in that animated anthology called Secret Level, that comes out in December, and the game's already fucking dead lmao. Also, nice description for that fucking buzzword, it really is just a jumping the shark variant at this point, though, as much as I hate to advocate for any of the extremist sides in this shitstorm of a discussion, there are some cases that are just the product of people who unironically believe on that stuff, no corporate meddling involved (though at least those show competence and good writing that's held down by the nonsense they shove in imo), which I personally believe are the consequences of the average late 00's to mid 2010's Tumblr users getting into the entertainment industry.
That Amazon show just looks really dumb and I have no idea who it's supposed to appeal to. They have these zombie IPs in the show like Mega Man while also reserving a slot for a game that's literally brand-new (or WAS brand-new). It just looks like pixels again without Adam Sandler
The biggest problem with gay characters is that, many times, the writers themselves don’t write a world where being gay is just a normal thing. They have to break the fourth wall and essentially insult the audience in some quasi-lecturing moment. The problem isn’t stories where the characters are gay. The problem is the stories themselves overemphasizing the gayness over the story. Looking to anime, I can easily find several stories that happen to have gay relationships without the relationship being the primary story element: Gundam The Witch From Mercury: Has exactly one moment in episode one that establishes gay relationships as normal. Beyond that, everything else is just the story with a natural development of a relationship alongside the greater story. Symphogear has at a gay relationship, but it’s treated as something in the background until we get to a point where the characters basically accept their feelings for each other. Aside from that, most of the story is about cool fights and great music. Lycoris Recoil is yet another story first anime that happens to have a gay relationship. The main story could basically exist without any romance because is stands on its own two feet. The characters just happen to be gay. Looking at other “rainbow” characters, we have Chivalry of a Failed Knight which includes a trans character. Some people may not have even noticed because this character is just treated as a normal person in universe (which is pretty crazy considering the conservative sexual themes shown in the main couple). Gurren Lagann has a highly flamboyant guy as part of the recurring cast while also being known as a truly manly anime. Make a good story/game and most people won’t care if some if your characters are not “normal” straight people.
Not sure what happened to them "exploring options that will better reach players". I guess they ran out of copium and realized that it's not worth saving.
@@ToastyMann They rightfully realized that even if they rereleased the game as free to play, nothing would change, rather it will only cause additional damage to them losing even more money. Honestly a rare good choice from them at the unfortunate cost however of causing the death of two companies.
You know, a real case could've been made about the "people's job are at stake". Since this game is gonna flop, it'll lead to layoffs and more likely than not, there'll be some honest workers in there, and they have to deal with a cancer on their portfolio that is this game. BUT THEY *HAD* TO MESS EVEN *THAT* UP. Which makes this from saddening to funny in its own tragic way.
Concord is absolutely also being shit on for being released and shot down the same day as Astro Bot, which is becoming one of the highest rated games on the PS5.
There definitely will never be a game that fails as totally as this game does. 25 thousand sales is basically zero. I'm looking at the Wikipedia article about commercial failures in video games and I found one instance of something that sold fewer units (Nintendo 64DD) though maybe others sold fewer and I didn't pick it up from skimming the article. I think Sony deciding to cut their losses must have something to do with trying to tax write it off. It is incredible from a company with serious backing and apparent talent to make a game that works when launched completely fail. Concord is already on that Wikipedia page. I really do hope the people there are able to pivot to make something that people want to play. They get one chance to redeem themselves and I hope that they are able to pull it off. But they got to do it fast before their studio gets shut down.
what i find funny is the price tag, and them saying "future content will be all free". Did Firewalk learned nothing from Lawbreakers? Battleborn? hell Titanfall 1 for that matter? or are they so blinded by Overwatch they lost their sight for 8 years straight?
As someone who thinks "woke" is just a meaningless dogwistle for terminally online losers, I do agree the characters in Concord are (or were, as the game is as dead as my grandpa) the most unmemorable bunch of nothingburgers I've ever seen in a character based game and definitely contributed to this game being the entertainment equivalent of the Hinderburg disaster.
Great video! I love watching the giga corps that think everything they do is "too big to fail" reel and writhe in pain. I also think the woke stuff ends up bundled in with bad content just because they both stem from the same source, soulless appeal to all consumerism. Not causation but definitely correlation.

Supposedly there was going to be a Infamous/Prototype game but was scrapped for this 😢
@SioxerNikita I do and don't agree with the voting with your wallet argument nowadays.
Gollum won the argument.
And Skull Island.

Can we agree THIS is THE biggest flop in gaming HISTORY.
E.T didn't cost that much nor had 8 years of development.
Adjusted for inflation and considering the cost of the cartridges themselves it did cost a similar amount, but at least they got back about 40% of their budget in sales
A 60% loss was considered a catastrophe for atari, and now we fot concord not even grossing 1% of the budget in revenue lmao
True but if I am not mistaken at least E.T. did not have to give out any refunds
7:35 Part of the reason those games succeeded is because they had "characters that are gay" not "gay characters". Being gay wasn't their entire character.
Don’t forget the likable part
Okay, so uh, I got some bad news, - Sony did *not* in fact, spend 100 million dollars on just one live service game that failed...
They have 10 live service games in the pipeline. Each with their own 100 million dollar budget, I imagine.

I don't think anyone knows why people play fortnite. Fun gameplay, good art style, collabs people care about, and is free to play. And most importantly, updates at least every week or so (story quests or battle pass skins coming out) to keep people playing.
So true, the corporate suits just see the end result and try to improvise the recipe
Like every kid between 8-12 plays it, besides Roblox and Minecraft.
Fortnite plays well wether you like it or not it is mechanically very good game and the building during fights is what makes it unique
Not to mention the irony of how so many people tend to shit on Fortnite, but it's literally a successful game regardless of how "cringe" they may think it is. And the reason for it is because it's a fun game. Idk why such a concept flies by developers heads nowadays when they attempt to jump in on the live service hype train that Fortnite sets up so well
I would not say Fortnite has a good art style, it is the Committee version of cartoon style cel shading.
Concord is a game where the investor board is also the creative desicion team
do you think this is going to make Sony pull the "in case of emergency break glass" button and authorize a bloodborne remaster or something yet?
Seriously that game routinely trends on twitter like twice a month with people begging Sony for it since Fromsoft doesn't hold the rights to the IP. If Sony wanted money, all they gotta do is drop a 4 second trailer of the Doll saying "Oh Good Hunter"
How the hell has Bloodbourne not been ported to PC yet? Elden Ring sold like 10 million copies on PC in less than a month if I recall correctly. Sony’s practically sitting on oil.
@@ToastyMannone answer... Japan Studios... and racism... ok, make it two answers.

I love the people screaming "go woke, go broke"
It implies they'd pay for and play a shit game if the characters wore ugly red maga hats and screamed racial slurs on Truth Social at eachother.
SOMEBODY DID IT!!! OH MY GOSH I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO USE THE "COSTA CONCORD" TITLE. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
“People’s jobs are at stake!” is a pretty weak argument if you consider that a number of those people had eight consistent years of good employment in a a contract gig industry.
I think another issue with concord is that it was in development for 8 years, which just so happens to be the year that overwatch released, which was a time at which hero shooters did cost money to play but in 8 years the gaming landscape changed so concord was a game that no one wanted to buy that was 8 years too late for the type of game it was trying to be
No, it if had been good, I bet it would have seen fine sales.
@@SioxerNikita There were already free alternatives at this point and Concord didn't do much to stand out from its contemporaries in the slightest.
@@SioxerNikita I never said it was good, I said it was outdated when it released

One of resistance games or the motorstorm games on pc would awesome
@ToastyMann On the one hand, yes, Sony has been more willing to port their first party games to PC in recent years. On the other hand...those are, like...NORMAL video games. Not games whose entire identity is tied into the console they're on. Ghost of Tsushima or God of War could exist just fine on any system, outside of the actual porting. But Astro Bot is so tied to the Playstation lineage, and the PS5 specifically, it'd be insane to imagine playing it on a PC.

Why do people consider TF2 a "Hero Shooter" when it's a "class based shooter?"
"Class based shooter" is more like battlefield with some minor specialisations
"Hero shooter" is when all your kit is personalised for the character. So, TF2 is a hero shooter, but the "heroes" are called classes

7:39 funny enough those two are the only ones folks can bring when talking about that.
Woke games can sell, it just requires very weak competition, see Baulder Gate 3
I really don't understand them trying to make multiple live service games. I consider myself a gamer through and through, but I only got time for one GaaS game at a time. Multiple GaaS games, regardless of how different they are, is going to result in cannibalism.
4:52 you and Every other normal gamer out there.
If the game wasn’t made on such a high budget and promoted as a premium release, it might have done okay on the indie market. Well, maybe in 2016.
That’s an unfair thumbnail. The Costa Concordia was a fully functional cruise ship until it’s captain decided to play chicken with rocks.

I was shocked that they didn't even try to milk it as f2p. I mean I am glad they just nuked it but it sure is unprecedented.
The only game to speedrun a shutdown faster was The Culling at 8 days, and I'm betting it didn't cost 100 million to make.
Looking to anime, I can easily find several stories that happen to have gay relationships without the relationship being the primary story element:
Gundam The Witch From Mercury: Has exactly one moment in episode one that establishes gay relationships as normal.
