I waited long enough that my hoarded PowerShot SD630 has come back into style and I couldn't figure out why no matter what card I tried, it always said CARD LOCKED and/or MEMORY CARD ERROR. 1:22-When I watched this part of the video, I looked and noticed my Canon G7x's memory card was locked because the little white lock, so I moved it up, and it worked! Yay! Thank you so much for this video! Now I can start making videos with my favorite camera again. :)

YEH!! After 10 years and not being able to use the removeable sd card function of my new and never used JVC GZ-MG20U camcorder ( I was only able to record to the built in hard drive - camera could never find the SDHC card I would install ) anyway, I found some "OLD" micro sd 2 gb cards and the camera finally found that I had an sd card installed and formatted them!!!!!!!! Even though the manual said to use SDHC & 4-128gb and 10 class!!!!!! For some reason the "OLD card was found. Now I'm on my way to search for "OLD sd or microsd cards that's aren't HC and a 10 class!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and you are truly a life (camera) saver!!!

Wow!!! You are the camera guru in my book. I have an older Cannon Power Shot SX 40HS. I have had it about 6 years. One day it displayed the msg "memory card error" I was stumped..Long story short went to Best Buy purchased a memory card thinking this one was pretty old 8GB speed 8 and now seeing they are up to 16 GB. I thought okay this must be the problem. To my dismay it did not work. (Now I know why) I watched your video for memory cards with the formatting and toothpick and I was pleasantly surprised it fixed the issue. Thank you so much you saved me alot of money. Your awesome!

I just wanted to let you know this video was very well done. Easy to understand. I only needed to watch up to #2 to figure out the error. I am using a newer SDHC card and I had to borrow my friend's Cybershot SD600 and the memory card is just incompatible. My trip to California and Disneyland will be forever captured. Thank you for the card unlock advice it was in the unlock position but needed reset by sliding in lock position and unlock position again making sure it was slid right to the end, and worked like a charm Thanks!

Ok.....let me start off by saying... I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE FREAKING LOVE YOU!!! LOL Ok, I looked everywhere for a fix for my 3DS! (Which is a portable game system, not a camera!) Even Nintendo couldn't help me!!! Everyone kept telling me about the lock switch....I KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS CRAP THAN THE PEOPLE WHO KEPT SUGGESTING IT!! I knew it was not my sd card! No matter what I told them, the sd card was the problem in their opinion! After watching your video....I was looking inside the slot and realized it was no longer triggering the switch. It took me a while, but with a combination of tinkering with it, with the toothpick and some tape on the card itself, IT FINALLY WORKED!!!!!! All of the products I had purchased and downloaded are saved thanks to you!!! Thank you sooooooo much! Looks like I will be redirecting others with the same problem this way. :) Peace & Love

You make a lot of people happy, do you know that!? :) My card suddenly just said there was an error in a black screen! Just geting back from a vacation takin a lot of pictures and videos... I got really down. I also thought about that I am going abroad again in a week - god forbid it happens again when I'm travelling, what disasters that would be for me!? :( Instead of waiting for someone to help I searched the net and there you where :) Many different ways to try to recover made me feel better. In my case (we tried the slot / reader in the laptop, it did nothing for us) it actually worked to just connect the camera to my laptop. In the explorer on my computer, there they where and I could safely put them on my harddrive :D Now I'll follow your advice, to formate every now and then when erasing. Thanks a lot

Thanks so much for the information, it took until the section on using a non metalic item (toothpick) to slide along the card slot in the camera (cannon Sure Shot SX 120). After doing this the cards worked again and photos were recoverable. Great instruction you tube.

Thank you! My plastic notch that unlock the sd card fell off, but now it work again! I couldn't find cellophane though, and electric tape was too thick. I used a little post-it that I teared and a spot of crazy glue on the post-it glue did the charm!
This was extremely helpful thank you for this wonderful video. :) I bought a larger sd card for my mothers old camera and it kept giving me the error message and saying my card was locked when it wasn't, and it tunred out it was an sd hd card in an older camera problem.

Usefull video for sure ... i have memory card error with old Hitachi HDD-DVD camcoder when using 4Gb , 8Gb , 32Gb and 64Gb . I think i have to find an older SD card . I was suspecting the SD card slot in the camera to be faulty . Thank you so much .
Thanx for your reply. There is a problem though, it only recognizes my external hard disk I can't choose my SD card to format. That is also with a good working SD card, that won't be seen by the HP USB disk format tool either.

Thanks for the informative video! I thought you would describe a way to save cards that for strange reasons stop being recognized by the OS. No physical damage, the card just decided to stop working. No software will fix a card that can't be seen in the computer! How does one go about this? Thank you!

Hello, thank you for the fast reply. My card is a SDHC. It has worked perfectly until last week. I can see the pictures in the camera but it is not recognized in any pc or mac. I tried also to use a SD Card reader. That does not worked either.

I referred to the PowerShot Canon 520 manual to format a new memory card but receive "Memory card error" message. The lock is not on, and I am using a 2GB memory card, the exact same card as I am currently using in the camera with no problem. The only visible difference between the new card and the one currently in use is that the slide lock on the old card is white and on the new card it is gold. Any suggestions?
thank you for the information. I am still getting memory card error and not able to use the camera. I tried to format it like you suggested. I found where the format option is on my Canon Powershot, however when I scroll it will not let me select format as an option. It passes the format and goes to the next option. The camera & memory card are new. I have already taken pictures and downloaded them from the memory card onto the computer twice before. Today i keep getting memory card error.
If you open the card slot and hold the camera such that the opening is pointed down, would it be safe to use contact cleaner with the long plastic tube and squirt some up there where the switch is? Hopefully the excess would run out. Tanks for your video.

SDHC cards are physically and electrically identical to standard-capacity SD cards (SDSC). The major compatibility issues between SDHC and SDSC cards are the redefinition of the Card-Specific Data (CSD) register in Version 2.0, and the fact that SDHC cards are shipped preformatted with the FAT32 file system.
Thanks to this amazing video I'm finally able to use my card reader again.
Host devices that accept SDHC cards are required to accept SDSC cards. However, host devices designed for SDSC do not recognize SDHC or SDXC memory cards, although some devices can do so through a firmware upgrade. Older operating systems require patches to support SDHC. For instance, Microsoft Windows XP before SP3 requires a patch to support access to SDHC cards. Windows Vista SP1 also requires a later service pack.
I have a canon PowerShot SX20, and the toothpick idea worked for me. Then I was able to format my cards. Thank you so much!

None of these worked for me. I put some hand sanitizer on the memory card and inserted it into the slot and it fixed the problem!

Thanks so much for the information, it took until the section on using a non metalic item (toothpick) to slide along the
card slot in the camera (cannon Sure Shot SX 120). After doing this the cards worked again and photos were recoverable.

My plastic notch that unlock the sd card fell off, but now it work again!
I couldn't find cellophane though, and electric tape was too thick. I used a little post-it that I teared and a spot of crazy glue on the post-it glue did the charm!
This was extremely helpful thank you for this wonderful video. :) I bought a larger sd card for my mothers old camera and it kept giving me the error message and saying my card was locked when it wasn't, and it tunred out it was an sd hd card in an older camera problem.

Usefull video for sure ... i have memory card error with old Hitachi HDD-DVD camcoder when using 4Gb , 8Gb , 32Gb and 64Gb . I think i have to find an older SD card . I was suspecting the SD card slot in the camera to be faulty .

Thanx for your reply. There is a problem though, it only recognizes my external hard disk I can't choose my SD card to format. That is also with a good working SD card, that won't be seen by the HP USB disk format tool either.

The Secure Digital extended Capacity (SDXC) format supports cards up to 2 TB (2048 GB), compared to a limit of 32 GB for SDHC cards in the SD 2.0 specification.
How often do you recommend a format? I do like to delete photos that are blurry so forth and so on. I may upload a video response i have a sd card with a card error and its driving me nutz. Good video by the way thanks.

I thought you would describe a way to save cards that for strange reasons stop being recognized by the OS.
No physical damage, the card just decided to stop working.

Hello, thank you for the fast reply. My card is a SDHC. It has worked perfectly until last week. I can see the pictures in the camera but it is not recognized in any pc or mac. I tried also to use a SD Card reader. That does not worked either.

I referred to the PowerShot Canon 520 manual to format a new memory card but receive "Memory card error" message. The lock is not on, and I am using a 2GB memory card, the exact same card as I am currently using in the camera with no problem. The only visible difference between the new card and the one currently in use is that the slide lock on the old card is white and on the new card it is gold. Any suggestions?

thank you for the information. I am still getting memory card error and not able to use the camera. I tried to format it like you suggested. I found where the format option is on my Canon Powershot, however when I scroll it will not let me select format as an option. It passes the format and goes to the next option. The camera & memory card are new. I have already taken pictures and downloaded them from the memory card onto the computer twice before. Today i keep getting memory card error.
If you open the card slot and hold the camera such that the opening is pointed down, would it be safe to use contact cleaner with the long plastic tube and squirt some up there where the switch is? Hopefully the excess would run out. Tanks for your video.
