10:09 Fun Fact: CD ROM Speed of 1x = 150 KiloBytes per sec. So a speed rating of 1667x = 250,050 KiloBytes per sec. and that would equate to 250.05 MegaBytes per sec. Thanks for the video Lon. This is something that I will send to my less technical family and friends. Cheers!
Been seeing these symbols for about a decade. I finally know what they mean. Videos like this help clarify and educate those who aren't familiar with them. Cool upload
You all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost my login password. I love any assistance you can give me!
You didn't discuss the "A" rated cards that are (supposedly) better for non-streaming (photo/video) "Application" types of uses, such as in a Raspberry Pi.
Didn't get into that just yet - that's more of a techie thing vs. a consumer thing which was the focus of this video. We'll revisit the topic when we have a decent way of measuring that kind of performance.
SD/TF/Flash was made for Camera/Video, these card's were never meant to have thousands and thousand of small files, like they do on SBC's. The constant Read-Write wears them out quicker
Those by the way are “application class” and I think refer to a micro SD card’s ability to function in raspberry pi’s, phones, etc. a little harder to measure.
Something worth noting for people looking for an SD card for a Nintendo switch specifically: the speed of the card will make little to no impact when it comes to load times in games
Awesome well presented info. Did make some clarity what I need to buy. Like to add man do i miss no hassle photography when i just needed a roll of Kodachrome and took beautiful photos
Yea they claim higher R W speeds than what they are rated that being said which USB version does your laptop support 2.0 or 3.0 because that is a separate factor itself when trying to benchmark an SD card
Excellent video per the norm here. I just went over explaining all the numbers on this stuff to an acquaintance on discord last week. Next time, I'm just gonna link this video. heh
Thanks for this great video. I need a wifi enabled SD card for a project. I'm wondering if there is anything specifics I need to keep in mind for that. Also, I couldn't find a wifi SD card with the big names like SONYE or SanDisk. Any recommendations? Thanks!
I believe they over-provision the memory so it can sustain more writes given the capacity. It has more 'spare cells' that come online when others fail.
I'm having finding a microSD card for a dash cam that is above the 30 from well-known brand there's a couple from something called Pro-Grade and Delkin, but I have no how reliable those cards are. Also do I need to go above v30 if the dash cam is maximum 4k
SDXC came in 2009 so almost anything in use should support it. The Cheap Canon Ixus 105 which I bought in 2010 supported SDXC. That reader should not be your primary reader on UHS-I Sandisk cards. They have another that is faster on UHS-I. The circle is actually a C for Class. Actually you do no need to do mathematics as all cameras list the required cards in their manuals.
The SD card I’m getting is new. It has a max of 14.5 hours. When I hit that max, what do I do. Do I upload it then edit it and will I erase all footage and will the card go back to 14.5 hours capacity again. Please explain. And how do I get all of the capacity back?
I bought a zve10 couple weeks ago and i have been using it with a 10usd sandisk sdhc I 10. I dind't have any trouble while shooting bursts at 11fps but today started to take like 10 or 15 seconds to save a burst. Should i get a better card or is it a camera problem?
And I thought USB standards and naming were bad! Talk about a hodge podge of specification mish mash! Why is the I.T industry so bad at creating simple to understand terminology for its products? This is coming from an I.T professional by the way!
The old computers in the background make it seems like the videos are being made from a dusty closet at a high school where they keep the old dinosaurs from the 1980's.
Lon.TV many stores here in my country are third party sellers. Some customers report they bought fake cards. Anyways your vid is very informative I hope you can make a video about OG vs Fake :)
I'd definitely avoid ebay as well it's full of fake SD cards. It often comes down to price; if the card seems really cheap compared to msrp, there's probably a catch.
Im sure the info you dpoke about is helpful to people who are computer smart. Fot a computer dummy i could use beginners cours on memory cards. Without a badic understanding this is sounding like chinese to me. Ya should probably start off by saying this is not for dummies.
So why isn’t your Sony card rated V90? These ratings are pretty useless for helping consumers choose. All should be replaced by a single sustained write speed figure, under some standardised measurement.
Because Sony does not guarantee such speed. The measure he did is not the standard used. The numbers actually are important. The fact that you do not understand them is not relevant. Just get a 64 GB or larger UHS-I U3 V30 card and you are good for most cases including 4K.
Alright....phones only having like 128 gb of space or less MAKE NO SENSE!!! And now the new samsungs dont have a port for sd cards anymore. Its the dumbest decision they have ever made. They say just use the cloud....no...just give it more memory because its insanly easy. These cards are so small and 128 tb?!? Damn! Thats only like 100+ times more than a phone has. No sense! Sry venting i guess haha
Lon, I could listen to you talk about probably anything and be entertained and informed. Thanks for everything!
THank you! This is still relevant 3 years later!
Thanks for this Lon. I think a lot of people look at the cheapest storage for the money and not the specs. Very good explanation.

Wow, Lon! So very helpful...you've cleared up years of SD card mystery for me
Me too
that was a lot of information , but a good one . I just ran around the house pulling out sd cards out of all my cameras to check .)
I had that exact Sandisk Extreme Pro card in my computer right now from when I off loaded the last footage. I've had excellent luck with them.
They are really good - my go-to for most field work.
Thanks for your explaining everything about the SD card. I was confused which I need to buy. It helps me a lot

Great Info.. What happened to the day of pen and paper? Today we make it more complicared and expensive
Good refresher on what to look for when you are in the market for SD cards!
Thank you.
Thanks so much for the explanation. First time I’ve seen a full explanation on reads and writes and all the symbols!
High quality and extremely detailed video. Well done lon. You have done humanity good.
Lon could you please make a video like this one for graphics cards and processors? It could be very helpful
This is so helpful informational and useful. Im saving this and am gonna watch it a few more times. So helpful thank you 🙏
I learned something new today! Thanks Lon!
Thank you so much for this, I have often wondered what the markings on the card meant, now I know. No more paying for more than I need.
You all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb lost my login password. I love any assistance you can give me!
Very clear explanation, thank you! Better than most others, finally I think I understood at least this what I need for my purposes.

Hey, the video turned out great! Very concise and informative. I was watching the stream the other day while you made it!
Nice information thank you ,I'm using samsung evo plus and work good too
You didnt mention the a1 or a2 markings on the cards. What are those ?
Looks like they added another one... didn’t cover that one here we’ll need to explore in a future one.
Those by the way are “application class” and I think refer to a micro SD card’s ability to function in raspberry pi’s, phones, etc. a little harder to measure.
@@LonSeidman thank you sir!
What about A1, A2, etc?
128 TB?!! Who needs this?
great video. I know what I want for Christmas
Excellent video
A-1 presentation !! Can you take a new blank sd card, put into a uhs 2 reader connect to computer and download music, pictures ?
Great and informative video Lon! Doesn’t the Switch only take SDXC cards?
Something worth noting for people looking for an SD card for a Nintendo switch specifically: the speed of the card will make little to no impact when it comes to load times in games
Very useful video . Thanks to your efforts.
And yet, I don't know what the H "private" means within the card itself ? :(
Great video! Well done.
Lon.TV my memory card is 256 but why it shows 268 on my phone?🤔is it safe..
I just bought it. Pls answer
Thanks dude, just picked up a new Sony ZV-1 and this really helped me understand the crazy world of memory cards :P
Great and informative :)

Great job, Lon. As usual, clear, concise and informative. Thanks. Oh yeah, a link to the chart would be helpful.
Awesome well presented info. Did make some clarity what I need to buy. Like to add man do i miss no hassle photography when i just needed a roll of Kodachrome and took beautiful photos
Is it possible to send pictures from the pc on this card: Thank you.

With Canon R7, can you use UHS I card? Or d oI have to use UHS II?
But does any of these symbols matter if the card is just for a tablet/phone if just used mainly as storage?
Hey, can i ask a question what is the meaning of the tagline "up to" on sdcards? esp. on smarthphones
What is a SD card ????.......no one says what there used for or how to use them ..my Tv has a SD slot what does that mean and how can i use it
I'm purchasing a sony HDR-TGv5 video camcorder that records in AVCHD video quality. Should I buy a card that reads in 4mb per second?
Hi! Any advice on a Samsung 20fe phone? I wanted a 1TB.
What makes a car high endurance? Why are they different? Manufacture quality or are they a different design?
I believe they over-provision the memory so it can sustain more writes given the capacity. It has more 'spare cells' that come online when others fail.
Love the vintage Macs in the background! I loved the Apple computer company, I am less enamored with the Apple iPhone company.

Hello would the read speed make a difference when loading a game rom on it and loading them on a Android device

I would look at the v rating on the card to see what its write speed is.
Good Video
Why company write all symbol
U3 and V30 mean 30mb / second speed so why ??????😢
Link to that chart?
Hello, could you pls help me promote a memory card?
Does anybody think this standard system is absolutely insane?
And I thought USB standards and naming were bad! Talk about a hodge podge of specification mish mash! Why is the I.T industry so bad at creating simple to understand terminology for its products? This is coming from an I.T professional by the way!

How do you know if its fake or og? many of these are fake.
That’s a good question - best advice I can give on that is to avoid third party sellers on major sales platforms
Lon.TV many stores here in my country are third party sellers. Some customers report they bought fake cards. Anyways your vid is very informative I hope you can make a video about OG vs Fake :)

Came for the SD cards, stayed for the Apple IIgs.
Roman numerals are used for tech --- who knew ?
Im passing this video on to my pal mooner who mans a lookout hole in his outhouse spying on his boyfriends.
2:51 128 Terabytes? That's 128000 Gigabytes (GB). That can't be right.
That’s what the spec allows but of course storage technology can’t get there yet
