  • Today, we're going to look at the 2017 Blade Show "Knife of the Year", the Lionsteel SR11. Unfortunately, even though it's beautiful, with a spectacular action, all the little details add up to make this guy a near, but definitive, miss.

    One thing to highlight: When this knife was tested by AdvancedKnifeBro, the lock (even with Rotoblock Engaged) did fail. This is what I get for not doing much batonning. Here's a link to his video: th-cam.com/video/XzehHS1NsGc/w-d-xo.html

    • @n3v3rgunn45
      @n3v3rgunn45 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It also failed the spine whack test Nick. Most people aren't batoning with folders, (and shouldn't be) but the lock failing from a spine whack or two is concerning as hell.

    • @J85909266
      @J85909266 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree that batoning with folders is way beyond abuse, but it still proved, at least in Bro's sample, that the Rotolock does nothing.

    • @Gpknives
      @Gpknives 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It seems like +AdvancedKnifeBro may have gotten one with a QC issue. With the Rotoblock Engaged there should be no movement of the lockbar. His exhibited movement _with_ the Rotoblock engaged so either it wasn't fully engaged or there is an issue with the lock up on his.

    • @n3v3rgunn45
      @n3v3rgunn45 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      GPKNIVES that's possible. Perhaps he should send his back and see if another one has the same issue. It looked like poor tolerances.

    • @J85909266
      @J85909266 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you guys post up some quick batoning videos with the Rotolock fully locked down? This knife's reputation hangs in the balance! The Overall Knife of the Year, no less!

    Questions..First, could I replace the bearings with phosphor bronze washers? Secondly, could I reprofile the edge to something around either 17 or 20 degrees and improve its slicing performance?

    Hey Nick, thanks for your reviews! I am looking at possibly buying one of these knives. Bit in doubt wether or not i should buy this one, or the Zero Tolerance 0308. Any advice on that would be great too ;) I have a question about the SR11; is it worth the money to go for the titanium, rather than the aluminium version?

    thanks fun review . (is lionsteel sleeping with the judge?) last time wasnt the KUR the winner? To me a close but better knife and way less money. In my eyes its almost like they took the KUR and said what can we do to make it the lattest thing ie the intergral the adjustable thing on the lock bar, glass breaker now bearrings and now it should be trendy enough lets charge trendy money but just a bit less than the Benchmade one . i think that whats off on this one for me.

    I think I can understand why the SR1 and SR2 ran on teflon washers. They knew that 99% of the people who own those knives probably wouldn't try to disassemble them, and surely teflon is much more forgiving when grinding against the grit and dirt that will get in there over time. Just a theory.
    Anyway, I recently bought a Lionsteel M4 and it is wonderful. Best outdoors knife I've ever owned. I really like Molletta's designs. Great handle ergos and blade shape, perfect size, stunning finish, beautiful sheath. Couldn't believe I could get such a solid chunk of M390 for such a decent price.

    I've got the Boker Plus PM-3 that came with a glass breaker screwed into the base. Thankfully it came with a piece that could be screwed in to replace it that was flat.
    A thought about the pocket clip: pull it out of your pocket by pulling up from the tip of the clip.
    Too many flaws that you point out to make it blade of the year. Maybe it was just a bad year.

  • @darichard11
    @darichard11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This started out so encouraging - thought for sure it was going to be a gem. Just kept going downhill.
    For those who like this knife, just consider that everybody has an opinion. My most used EDC knife hasn't gotten one good review (that I've seen). It's a great knife for me. So if you like it, enjoy it.
    Why the glass breaker? Why? Has anybody used the glass breaker on the back of folding knife to actually break glass ever? Seems pointless (get it, eh... glass breakers are pointy, so it's pointless....).

      It's surprisingly hard to find a background which:
      A) Doesn't hinder autofocus
      B) Doesn't have serious exposure change issues when the hands go in and out of the frame
      C) Doesn't cause the white balance to go nuts
      I'm looking, but I'm not finding.

    I have medium to large hands and it's ergonomics are great for me. And I don't have any slip problems... The edge is a bit thick, but I don't like really thin knives. If I want to slice an apple, I use a kitchen knife. My only gripe is that the clip is underwhelming compared to the knife. This is the first time I've completely disagreed with you on a knife video, but as always, I enjoy and appreciate your content.

    I love your channel Nick but the thing that bothers me about bearings being such a huge fad right now on this and so many others is that they sacrifice long-term strength, reliability, and ease of maintenance for the sake of nothing else but appealing to people who's entire appreciation of knives is opening and closing them while never actually using them. I know you use your knives Nick but many others don't. Teflon washers will never be as smooth as bearings, no argument there, but the reason makers like Rick Hinderer stick to teflon is that they are far superior at doing what he intends his knives to do, be used hard, not be the ultimate fidget toy for guys watching the tube. I don't mind bearings as long as those that love them understand and acknowledge this reality.

    I suspect it's so slippery because over in Italy they always have raw rough on their hands from throwing pizzas in the air and singing so the texturing doesn't matter much when you also have mozzarella caked in the texturing which adds extra grip. Or perhaps it's so slippery because the Italians are slimy themselves? Great and very honest review on an overrated knife with many problems. Thanks squirrel!

    So it doesn't come out of your pocket good, doesn't stay in your hand good, doesn't slice good, scratches you when carried and has lock up issues. This won knife of the year? Did they actually use the knife or put it in a pocket before handing out this award? (I just read the article linked in a lower comment and now understand).
    That too thick behind the edge thing has become virulent in the fixed blade* market, is it starting to infect folders now?
    *I don't think even hard use fixed blades need to be thick behind the edge, ka bars bk series (at least the 5, 7 and 16) is thin behind the edge, look at how hard those have been used on camera and I have never heard about any issues due to thin edges or experienced any with mine.

    • @FurrowedSon

      Like I said, on paper it's stellar, and I can see how, if you look at this mostly in a display case and don't really interact with it, you might miss the problems. But it's also worth pointing out that Blade Show "Knife of the Year" winners are seldom fan favorites, and there are many head-scratching moments in the history of the award.

      Tony over at Everyday Commentary had a great article on this: www.alloutdoor.com/2016/06/21/blade-show-award-hot-take/

      The philosophy of "paid advertisement" described in that article seems to have paid off this year; countless of these SR11 Lionsteels populated my IG feed shortly after Blade 2017.

    At $367.50 it seems overpriced. Maybe not so much an EDC knife rather than a truckers/lumberjack/oil riggers knife to be used with gloves. Just a thought....

    Why in the world would you review a knife you don’t like ? Why bash a knife that thousands of people love and enjoy ??????? Why don’t you just review knives that you like ? It would make a lot more sense to do that, wouldn’t it ?
