      Great goals Eric! Just getting those extra miles will help with speed. Some people will disagree but trust me endurance is needed for 5k and more miles will help! Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

    Hey Matt - been an occasional viewer of your channel for some time now, really dig your content & visual style, it's clear you put a lot of work in your videos. ;)
    I just have one goal for 2021: run a marathon. I don't care about the pace, I started seriously running about a year and a half ago and ran my first half marathon in 2020. This year my (ambitious) goal is to double that achievement. Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for the kind words. I probably put too much effort into these TH-cam videos but I'm enjoying it. I would love to hear about the marathon when you do it this year. Hey Matt,
    Thanks for the review. One of my goals for 2021 is to compete and finish my first 70.3 Ironman. Hi Matt. I find your reviews very handy, always honest and you don't care about the manufacturer! My goal is to run an ultra of 100 km in 9:30 this year to be allowed for the 120 Km of Texel in 2021.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the kind words. I do try to care about the manufactures. I write software and I always wonder about the developers for these watches. For example, I'd love Polar to allow notifications during activities but I'm wondering if it's something hard for developers to do with their operating system or if it's just a bad judgement call by an executive? Either way, I don't like to completely bash any product knowing how much work it takes to bring something to market. On the other hand, I want you guys to know what the best products are in my opinion. And I hope that manufactures will watch and make adjustments if they're making bad judgements like the notification thing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @texelrunner
      @texelrunner 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mlegrand I know what you mean. I believe that development is being held back by the manufacturer. This to bring a 'newer' product to the market after a short period of time. In Software is so much possible.
      I also always hope that the manufacturer will watch and actually do something with it. Keep up the good work!!

    2021 goal in a word - consistency. Rather than focusing on just the swim... or FTP... or run splits etc etc etc - none of those matter without consistency in training. I need to find balance in work, play, family and training. 2021 = consistency. I wonder if the secret to consistency is hidden in having a coach or someone smarter than me to direct my training. Maybe a video topic in how do you achieve consistency in training?

      I think the Whoop straps are cool. It's good to have one number metric describing your recovery for the day. I don't think it really works well without the monthly fee. It is hard to think about any goals. At the beginning of 2019 my weight was over 100KGs. And I was able to any think about long walk... THEN I have started running (even before I have started reading running books and listening running podcast and also watching TH-cam videos)... and at the end of 2019 I have run over 2019KMs and get to shape of 75KGs. In 2020 I was not able to run marathon race - you know covid - but I have lost some of my orders in job -> i have had more time for running :D and at the end of 2020 I have run over 4000KMs.
    So whatever it will be in 2021, i cant wait for it :D
    I hope marathon under 3 hours. And maybe some short ultra marathons.

    Thanks for the review, hard to find substantive content on these fitness watches beyond the launch day impressions. Ive been considering to get a watch to help in data tracking my fitness data but find they all lack something in a critical area and all geared towards triathletes vs traditional athletes or unconventional ones (i.e. body building) which make it challenging to lock into one. On that front, looking forward to your drawing, as would definitely like to experience the use of one of these on my training journey. My goal for 2021 is general fitness development and continuation of my goal to hit my target weight of 185 lbs. My friend does watch reviews targeting cross fit (which I know isn't the same) th-cam.com/channels/BYr2tAIc3h5YbiNivJHeeg.html The Polar might be a great option for you. They make excellent watches. I'd also check out something like the Garmin 945 or Fenix series watches. All of these watches will struggle to count reps but it's something that they attempt to do.

      @@mlegrand yes mostly body building, hiit and growing into bike riding since recently getting a new bike. The main use for these watches I think for non triathletes seems to be the recovery aspects. Polar seems to be great for sleep tracking related metrics but according to the linked channel additional metrics such as body battery on Garmin makes it a weaker device for actionable metrics in terms of recovery but Garmin also having worse sleep tracking. Seems to be a lot of trade offs and little details within each device which makes it challenging to determine which platform to go with especially at the price points they all retail for.

    Matt, very nice review of the VV2, I am an happy owner of the VV1 watch, which I consider top one, but with some points to improve, notably:
    - the wrist heart reading function: with my slim wrist the reading are almost always wrong. For example, during 5 minutes warm-up before stretching the measured heart rate goes up to 160 BPM, when I am sure it is not higher than 120 BPM
    - the navigation in the menu is very long. Why the engineers in Polar have not implemented the loop function so to go directly from the last voice to the first one in a submenu? For example, to restart the watch I have to push at least ten times the button.
    - and as last, please, Polar's engineers, when you update a software like the polar flow, test it. I had to return one watch because was not working and after I discovered that the problem was in polar flow. Did you experience something like that in your 100 days of test?
    Anyway, happy new year to everybody and have a lot of fun with the polar watches.

    • @mlegrand
      @mlegrand  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have very slim wrists. Optical wrist HRMs are always going to be tricky for us. Chest straps or optical HRMs worn higher up on our arms are going to work better for us. My favorite is the OH1+. I didn't experience any issues with the Polar Flow app. It doesn't seems to sync up as quickly as I'd like but I didn't experience anything like you described. I have a feeling the Polar engineering team test the newer hardware more frequently than the older hardware. I'm a developer and I"m guilty of doing the same thing. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to post this very thoughtful comment. I think it's helpful to all of us looking at this watch. 👌

    My goal for 2021 is to get back to a more active lifestyle (not the fault of 2020, have strayed from the path for far longer unfortunately) - going to upgrade my M600 to a Vantage M at the end of the week. Will be doing a lot more biking, some swimming and hopefully I can run a bit again at some point; and it's all so I could have more stamina again while doing archery.
    Kinda shucks that Polar is so strict with it's sport profiles (no archery 🙄) that I was even checking out Garmin's offers, but there's something about Polar that keeps drawing me towards it!

      @@mlegrand As far as I could find/figure out: there isn't anything official, but there are a few apps on the IQ connect store for archery - no idea how well (or if there even is) any data from there is visible or analysable. And there also should be the ability to set custom names for profiles (which would be nice with Polar as well...kinda hard to distinguish 3 different "Other Indoor/Outdoor" activities 😂).
      A new Android Wear watch from Polar would be perfect for me; there's a lot newer hardware out now and there seems to be a growing interest in developing Wear finally...but this will probably only stay a dream unfortunately. And even if it were to come true at some point, I'd still want more different profiles (or the ability to add custom names at the very least).
      And no problem for the comment; thanks for reading through it! And thanks for a great video...I subscribed and will look through your previous videos tomorrow for more interesting stuff 🙂

    Hello Monsieur LeGrand! All the best in New 2021. I should not have watched this video. I have just bought other device from Coros. But as I spent last four years with Polar, I was simply curious.
    I fully agree with you, that the price is slightly too high, but still in my opinion Polar creates really solid stuff. Or maybe I'm just sentimental :)
    Anyway the night mode, which measures the quality of our sleeping and recovery process is pretty intriguing. We underestimate it. Especially when we are young. A little bit later we start to understand the real meaning of recovery time.
    Regarding my plans and targets... Well, I would like to play a little bit with ultra trail distances. But first of all to keep on running! One more year withy this crazy addiction!

      @@someone-who-is-somewhere Great suggestion Andy. I typically measure backlight brightness which is part of readability but not as important as pixel density or contrast. This review wasn't as in-depth as most of my watch reviews but more of a 'thoughts after 100 days'. But going forward I'll try hard to include something about visibility. I'd love a hard comparable metric to report which will be tricky but I'll work on it. Thanks again for the great suggestion! 👍

      @@mlegrand If you need reading glasses to see the watch face:
      * Big Simple Numbers
      * An easy to read gauge
      That's what's beautiful about the Polar watch design. With your arm bobbing up and down, mid run it is easy to see (or I hope so since I don't own a current one.)
      If you do not yet wear glasses, you may not appreciate how important this is.
      One can recreate the Polar UI on Garmin apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/cdcaa909-f11d-4f4c-84f6-4aed341362e6 but perhaps it's best t go for the real thing.
      You may want to ask some friends who need glasses to read what makes a great running watch UI. It could be an interesting video. I've looked for exactly this topic and no-one has covered it.
      It has an impact in several ways. Beyond using it during running, notifications is always the first thing I turn off. If I have to put on my eyeglasses to read a text message I'd sooner do it on my phone.
      Anyway, I think the Polar UI for running is perfect - the heart graph, speed, distance and time in big, easy to read, white on black high contrast numbers.
