For selling, PSA 10 may have a premium over a CGC 10 but PSA up charges you based on the value of the card your grading which basically saps the premium any way. So it's important to sorta check the math too. Which is difficult when you're trying to predict grades. If you're slabbing your personal collection CGC is way more affordable than PSA solely based on the up charges for valuable cards.
That's a fair point, though it is dependent on the specific card and it's value. Up-charges only apply in certain circumstances, but still a valid consideration.
I hate the look and feel of PSA slabs, would much rather trade and sell them than keep for a personal collection. As I'm from the UK I personally really like ACE graded slabs, don't usually grade cards myself but for my personal collection they are cheaper usually and look far nicer.
@@RJA I agree with you on the way PSA slabs feel and there look too. Personally I like CGC slabs all the way around. The funny part is. Out of the hundreds of slabs I own (except 10-15) are PSA. Only because I know one day they will be sold and most buyers want PSA slabs.
Great analysis. I recently considered all 3 companies and used 2 for grading my fan club Magikarp. Upon receiving the card in what I thought was NM/MT condition it, I saw it has a small indent along the edge so I opted to not grade with PSA expecting 6-7 at best. I went with CGC simply for cheapness and I liked the matching blue label for the actual card itself. It graded a 7.5 which I wasn’t a big fan of because I prefer whole numbers plus CGC then swapped labels. I cracked it and decided to press the card between glass to see if it could improve the card a tiny bit. I sent it to BGS and it came back with 8+ subgrades across the board which is exactly what I wanted. Definitely worth more in this particular case and more liquid as a rare vintage card. BTW you should note the difference in UPCHARGES! A higher grade with PSA or CGC is great but a 10k valuation will cost you a lot for just receiving the grade where BGS has no Upcharges. Personally, I use PSA but strategically use BGS when it benefits value.

How much AI do the big 3 use when grading? Personally, I love the look of the BGS and PSA slabs more than AGS, but I can't help but feel that unless the big 3 start using more AI, AGS will be preferred due to lack of human error

It depends on the types of wear . . . it might grade higher with one company over the others. Usually, PSA has the largest collector base for vintage . . . again though, it depends on which issues the card has.

when I grade it myself I’d send my cards to PSA because they have the best resell value. BUT… when I’m buying a vintage graded slab for my own pc, I’d buy CGC any day… I mean, for vintage especially, getting the same card for about Half or even One-Third of PSA10 prices is an insanely good deal. I’m one with the mindset of “buy the cards and not the label”.. And CGC Gem Mint Vintage cards, despite being priced at only 1/3 of PSA10, are about the same quality of the older certs PSA10, if not better. After CGC emerged, I can’t justify paying triple the price of CGC10 just for a boring old red label anymore.

The BGS Pristine 10 he is talking was sold back to the same owner and was a sold ERA listing . This is a common scam on eBay. For example: a card worth $100 ... But you list it at $250... and sold at $250 by a buddy of yours and then you cancel the sell $250 guess what the average price is now. That's right. You just made the card average go up. Almost like Shill bidding but a Buy It Now.

If the Base Set Charizard has a total pop of 51271 and 464 are PSA 10, then the gem rate is: 464/51271=0.009 or 0.9% 0.9% ≠ 6% If the Moonbreon has a total pop of 11197 and 8536 are PSA 10, then the gem rate is: 8536/11197=0.762 or 76.2% 76.2% ≠ 81.4% The more interesting numbers for vintage, however, are the post-pandemic gem rates. Unlimited Base Set Charizard is sitting at 0.11% with 45 PSA 10s out of 40545 cards graded. The odds work out as 1 out every of 901 submissions, which is 16x worse than pre-pandemic.
TCGFish calculates Gem Rates based on 9's and 10's only . . . I think the rationale is to determine what percent of "mint" cards actually achieve a Gem Mint grade. I agree though, the way the calculate Gem Rates isn't clear without further digging.

The answer is no. Your Pokemon cards should not be a substitute for actual investment. You should not be hinging your ability to make money on whether or not you pull and get good cards graded. It's ridiculous to do it is just gambling

CGC Pristine offers a realistic/attainable value gain with a beautiful slab design... hard to ignore the stats... unless you're a die-hard PSA fan.

The answer is no. Your Pokemon cards should not be a substitute for actual investment. You should not be hinging your ability to make money on whether or not you pull and get good cards graded. It's ridiculous to do it is just gambling
