Logitech X530 Subwoofer Mod - turn it into an active sub without the control speaker

  • How to convert your Logitech X530 subwoofer module into a separate active sub without needing the plug-in control speaker (the one with the volume knob and power button). You'll need, a Philips head screw driver and some modest soldering skills. Take about 30-45 minutes. Will accept phone input levels (say less than 100 mV), or small speaker levels as an input signal. I've also done a full frequency test (at 10 min 45 sec) - works down to about 15 Hz.

    God, I finally found what I was looking for Thank you so, so much for making this video ! Definently gonna fire up mine. People love to sell the subbs alone, and then you have to mess with exactly what is shown here. Again, my logitech sub would be useless without this video. God bless.

    Great video . Exactly what I was looking for a I just got this sub from an outdoor market for like 2usd and thought I can bypass it . I like how you did it but I do think if you have a spare cable from an only PC monitor you maybe able to build a little box for the power and input . I really liked this video perfectly explained

    hey mate thanks for sharing so much gold dust know how and its a great presentation. Could I ask you, what does connecting 12v to the switch do exactly (I know it puts the system in standby or idle but how does it do that and what is the easiest way to accomplish this so I can use the amp actively, and how do you add that charge? is it just a case of the switch connecting the two pins by running a wire into the circuit somewhere, or do you have to hook up a 12v psu and add a 12v charge directly to those pins? Sorry for my electrical ignorance. One advice I can offer, though, is never to drill holes in this type of cabinet, as it is finely bass-tuned at the factory and making physical alterations to the structure is known to drastically alter the sound. There must be a cross over in the circuit already so I dont think that is your sound issue, as long as a tweeter is added to the speaker connections the whole hz range should be covered, as I understand it anyway. Just thought I would offer 2 cents ; ). Thanks for any advice you rock!

    • @scarynumberone

      cool I just hook up a 12v battery into the standby pins through the VGA for example and leave it on permanently when using the active sub?

    awesome video!!! question - how would you connect/convert a home theatre sound system of 5.1 speakers to a laptop that has only input for 3.5mm jack. is a amplifier needed? whats the best and cheapest way to connect it without needing to buy a separate hifi amplifier

    • @pescado99
      @pescado99  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Short answer is that it's not possible. The logitech speakers can't decode, they can only amplify weak headphone level signals. Laptops only have 2 channel output from their 3.5 mm headphone socket. So that's all you will hear/be able to amplify. You need a PC (Mac??) That has separate channels outputs from the sound card. Also, the source must also be decoded as a 5.1 signal. 99% of stuff on TH-cam is 2 channel only. Only streaming services contain separate channels. Cheers

    • @pescado99
      @pescado99  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it wasn't super easy. It's pretty tight (not much cord slack). I used an adjustable pipe wrench with the jaws open one notch (so teeth stay parallel), clamped it, and then wriggled it gently side-to-side to crack the binding glue on the back. Rock it back and forth - it'll come free.

    I acquired a Logitech Z506 Sub alone with no control speaker, similar to the X530 but not quite the same. Do you know if it's possible for me to insert a shorting wire to connect the switch pins of the DB15 and activate that way? I would like to use the RCA inputs if possible.
    EDIT: Ah, it's a DB9 connector on this model. I guess I need to find a diagram.

    • @pescado99
      @pescado99  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure. I'd need to sit down and think about this for a bit. If you're sure of the switch pins, then try shorting it out, otherwise, be careful if they connect into the IC. good luck!

  • @micling2199
    @micling2199 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you theoretically use a Y splitter to connect to the L and R aux input on the back of the sub and then run to the LFE output on a receiver and use this sub for home theatre use? Just disable the speakers by unhooking the negative wire on each internally yet still use the volume control on them. This way the LFE signal is only being output by the subwoofer. Do you suppose this would work?

    • @pescado99
      @pescado99  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it might (if I understand you correctly), but you could have to ask why? This is a bit of a toy, and not suited for home theatre. I'm not happy with the LFE frequency cut of this project, but haven"t played with it enough to understand the issue fully - it just sounds a bit flat (obviously missing the higher frequency outputs which would normally go to 2 x satellites). Also, all sub outputs are mono - as you know. This project was to prove the concept (to stop me binning it). I would suggest you just buy a dedicated cheap sub on Gumtree of FB marketplace, they sell for between nothing and $50.

    • @scarynumberone
      @scarynumberone ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pescado99 Just connect to the mono pins going to the sub as shown in video. If you go through the satellite speaker outs you would send audio into the high Hz range in the cross over circuit, also I think there would only be a parallel connection through them and not a series one since the cross over needs to separate the two (three) signals (mono to sub, plus LR to tweeters), so as I understand it you would not reach the sub woofer this way. But you could still send a high Hz signal though the sub is not intended for that (but it will still sound). Again I'm just adding my interpretation here... cheers.

      @pescado99  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The input of this board is AC, I want to run it with DC, how can I do it?

    • @pescado99
      @pescado99  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it would be possible, the supply is 240 VAC. The transformer on the main board has a secondary winding that steps the voltage down (not sure, but typically 6v to 9v), it is then rectified with a diode bridge rectifier, and filtered with capacitors. So technically, you could pick up the secondary winding from the transformer where it connects to the diode rectifiers - you could measure it and replicate it. Make sure you get polarity right. Would suggest at least 2 Amps on DC supply.
