  • Here is how to install the Little Machine Shop mini mill belt drive upgrade. I also show how to get a full size rack for the mini mill giving 2 more inches of Z axis travel for very little cost.

    HI Dave, thanks for another visit to your shop. All of the aluminum parts could easily be made on a CNC mill. Whoever programmed them should have specified chamfering the edges including the holes. I volunteer at the machine shop at the local high school. Right now the students are building steam engines and since we have a shortage of lathes, they are making the flywheels on the 3 axis VMC. It is amazing to watch the mill cut the round flywheel and make the spokes. They modeled the engines in Fusion 360. It also generates the G-code and lets them check the tool path. Amazing that Auto Desk makes that program available for free to students and hobbyists.

    Great vid as always, Dave, on my mini mill, I fitted a handle to the fine down feed knob, it's made plunge milling so much easier than using the little round knob.

      @TheMiniMachineShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen a number of mills fitted like that and I just can't imagine it working well on such a small radius. But your comment is making me think about it now!

      I'm not real good with making videos, but I've just uploaded a quick vid showing the handle in use for plunge cutting, I was surprised how well it works.

      Duhhhh... now I get it you increased the radius a LOT! There have been times when that would be way better so now you have me really thinking about. I really appreciate you taking the time to make a video!!!

    The need for the plastic tube on the shaft is to insure the shaft does not fall out the bottom. The shaft was prevented from falling due to a screw and washer on the removed gear.
    The double gear is keyed to the shaft and has no set screw. It is a "tight" fit. Vibration could cause the shaft, due to gravity to work its way down the double gear.
    With the shaft out the loose double gear could lock up the internal gear on the spindle. You now have a big project to get in the housing and clean things up.

    Hey Dave, I just purchased a 'Little Machine Shop' belt kit. The same as yours.
    The plastic cover has a protective wrap coating on the inside & out. If you peel it off,
    it should be clear & not all fogged looking.

    Typical nowadays where you pay top dollar(and this crappy little kit IS top dollar), and you get the bottom of the barrel. For the money it costs for these parts, they should be smooth and almost like mirrors. I was dissapointed in my purchase as well. It's one of the main reasons I don't bother going to little machine middleman, I'm not into being upcharged for the exact pos I can buy at Amazon for at least a third less(usually even less than that). But at least now I have the exact dimensions of the material so I can fabricate my own for my other mini mill. Probably won't slice my finger in the process either lol.

    I thought it wouldn't be hard to turn my own pulleys to do a belt conversion and make the mounting plate on the mill and now I think I will bcs it's disappointing to hear LMS' supplier cheaped out on the parts for the kit.

    Dave, I know its late, but mineral spirits will work on the oil that soaked into your wood drawers. Liberally use the spirits, then once dry sand to match other drawers.

    In this conversion don't the internal gears still spin and make noise? There is no neutral position for engaging the high/ low gears. More work to remove the gears so they are still not engaged.

    • @TheMiniMachineShop
      @TheMiniMachineShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a neutral move the lever to the middle and none are engaged..

    • @gvet47
      @gvet47 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMiniMachineShop I must need to play more on the high/low lever position and then make sure it is fixed at that point. I wonder if you lose torque. Belt drive is usually less efficient but as is it has two gear sets so it may balance out.

    • @TheMiniMachineShop
      @TheMiniMachineShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gvet47 I found the neutral point and the lever never even moved accidently and the loose of belt slipping has save me many times when something stalled the spindle. Other than that works GREAT!

    • @gvet47
      @gvet47 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMiniMachineShop I put off buying the LMS conversion but maybe better than the top gear and then high/ low gears replaced sometime. Put metal gears I'm my lathe headstock but they just had more backlash and noise. LMS sent replacement gear but that had same poor backlash. I"ll wait for next check from the government, if it happens!

    About the price difference between Grizzly and LMS. I found the same when ordering the plastic gears. I don't recall that exact price on LMS but a single gear was between $10 to $15 dollars and on Grizzly was about $1~$2 dollars.....Go figure!

    Hi Dave great stuff this week ty . The only question i have is on the lathe why do you go left to right ? in machinist trade school we always went right to left ,unless we were making left hand threads or special cut . But if you have good luck with that type of cut very cool ty for showing some cool ideas :)

      Two reasons 1.I get much better finishes that way 2. But biggest is the feed is being driven by a very powerful motor which can cause major damage if something goes wrong.

      To avoid spills use a yogurt cup and put a magent in the bottom. Of course that only works if your workbench is metal.

    Don’t wear sleeves that catch oil containers, they can also catch a rotating chuck jaw! I just discovered naptha soap for removing oil stains and in this short time it is semi-miraculous. Grocery store.

    Dave!
    Here are some rules for ye! These are all given in by decades of experience!
    1) don't give coolant to the baby, it is bad for them!
    2) have some really crappy safety glasses for visitors you don't like
    3) Always start out telling apprentices that garlic protects against cutting oil fumes.
    4) WD40 has no place in a margarita
    5) Telling your wife that swarf gives a nice 'accent' to a carpet, never works
    6) The girl at the hardware counter, the one that barely speaks English ...may be a Jedi on a mission
    7) If it can't be done in Metric, in ain't worth doing...
    8) Using a micrometer as a C clamp IS a hanging offense, even for minors
    9) Always, and I do mean always keep breathing!
    Hugs and kisses!
    Paddy

    Finally finished installing my LMS belt drive this afternoon, but seem to be having issues with the larger of two pulleys. The one that slides onto the spindle appears not to be concentric. Did you have issues with your large pulley after you installed it on to your Grizzly? Cheers

    The separation of the WD-40 is water! Ironic that WD stands for "water displacement" and yet there is water in the propellant base? Which is why I quit using it over 40 years ago! It's fine if you shake it up and spray whatever you want to use it on, as long as you wipe it off afterwards!! I use Amsoil MP (Metal Protector) spray lubricant. It goes on easy, dries almost completely, and does not attract dirt, and best of all, contains NO WATER! Nice videos, thanks!

Es wäre toll, wenn du von den Teilen die Maße hättest, oder evtl. eine Bemaßste Zeichnung. Hi, could you talk more about the parts? Also, I know that they are sold in stores, but, I would like to make them myself. It would be great if you have the dimensions of the parts, or possibly a dimensioned drawing. Your channel is really very good. I have to watch some things twice (I don't speak English very well). Your videos are always very interesting and informative. Keep it up!

    Rule #1. DO NOT tell friends, family or neighbors you have a mill and lathe. If you do, be prepared to make stuff. They will want you to spend half a day making a part they could have bought for $5.
