I happened to buy the exact same baitcaster and this helped a Ton. I know you won’t read this cause it’s been six years since you made a video but your help is appreciated
Instead of pressing the line against your rod to keep it tight as you spool up, just pinch the line between your thumb & finger. You don't have to squeeze it so much to burn your fingers with friction. I've been doing it that way for decades, it works great, and I've never given myself a friction burn.
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup th-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
He is a natural in front of camera especially by himself, I've always fished but three years ago I suffered a h ad injury,, And I forgot a lot of things in your video you explained the basics at a pace that was easy to understand......Thanks Douglas
Thanks this video was very easy to follow and understand, I bought my first baitcaster recently and had no idea how to do it and on the first try after watching this I got it
Thanks for posting this tutorial bud. I have always used a spinning reel, this year I thought I would branch out and went to Bass Pro and got myself a baitcaster rod & reel to learn the technique of how to use them. Wasn't to sure how to get the line on and your video helped. By the way the Abu Garcia Vendetta and Black Max reel are sweet bud.
So your now a full time baitcaster user now huh? You never go back after you feel the smoothness even with a shitty baitcaster it’s smoother than any other reel
+Hockeymike16 thanks i did use that method. And after about 15 min of messing around with it I found the drag. My reel could have used a image with directions ha. Thanks for your help.
Great video.. I just brought the Abu Garcia black max combo from walmart for $13.88 I got so lucky & I am so ready too use this baby. Thank you so much for the tip.
Can't go wrong with abu Garcia I still use the old vintage ones my dad used back in the day... They still work without a hitch and I have landed some great fish with them. I bet I will be passing them on to my kids one day and they will still be in great working order
Just a tip to anyone using braid without mono backing... make sure you tie the braided line into the holes with a good knot, like a slip knot, so the line doesnt slip when you are reeling in with a lot of torque. Braid doesnt really 'grip' onto itself like mono does.
A good way to wrap your line around the spool is to use a bit of sticky tape to hold the line to the spool..wind it around twice and then take the tape off and tie an Arbor knot which will slip down and is not very bulky.
thank you. I just ordered one of these black max rod/reel combos online. thanks for the video. it's plenty descriptive enough to shoe me what I needed.
All these years I thought they drilled the holes in the spools to lose weight LOL. I can't believe I never thought to put the line through one of the holes. I feel like a moron. Glad I seen this video lol. I have that same set up by the way and you can't beat those reels. They are just above and beyond.
Thank you Chris for the video on how to string A baitcaster fishing reel. I bought my fishing pole with the Reel at a pawn shop in my area and the pawnshop didn't even know how to string the line on the reel. I tried to figure it out myself but I was going the wrong way with stringing the POLE/reel. thank you for the hands on video because it was very helpful. now I can string my baitcaster reel the right way !!!!. 😂 HAPPY TRAILS , to you. ! I got my pole ready and all my camping gear it's time to drive to the lake !! ☕ 🐟 🚣 🎣 ⚓ 🏕 🏞
I have the same reel and man... this video was a banger! Helped so much I was literally staring at my rod rat nested beyond belief and unspooled it and was like, uh now what? 😂 thanks mate
Just would add that when you spool a bait casting reel come off the top from the spool and for a spinning reel come off the spool from bottom . This helps for better spooling.
If you have a local cabelas' or bass pro shop near you, they'll spool your reels for free. The reel, nor the line have to be purchased from the store, you can simply bring them in, and we'll be happy to help!
At the end of the video, he cuts the line before the guide. You guys might want to cut it after all of the guides so that you don't have to re thread the line through the guides.
If you position the spool to the rear of the box so the edge of the spool touches the box, you can add some drag as you reel. I am adding line to my baitcaster now. Thanks for the video!
Make sure you put the line on the reel the same rotation the reel spins from the spool to prevent rats nest when casting and to have a much better cast
I’ve had that happen every time I use it main reason why I’m watching this could you explain more on the rotation of the reel spins do you mean the spins of pulling in line or casting your line? Maybe that’s my whole problem
Love this rig! ur2.pl/2318 I hadn't fished in years, but I walk along the James River on my way home from work and wanted to see if perhaps maybe I could catch dinner along the way some nights. This setup easily fits into my backpack. Yesterday, was Day Two. I struck out on Day One, but wasn't surprised, given that the James is in flood right now.
How do you catch fish after cutting the line??? I guess where you are the fish eat the line or do they make a leash and collar out of it? Regardless when you catch a fish with that half rod and reel with no hook I’ll be watching 👀
I just got a baitcaster as a present from work. It's some kind of abu garcia set up. I don't know much about baitcasters but I want to learn how to use this thing and catch some fish! I am a novice fisherman but I really do enjoy it.
Nice touch with the box, good idea, smart idea,,. for an old guy like me who has not fished since being a kid, this young man taught an old dog new tricks thank you son.,.,.,, now i know how to get my line on this new type reel,, not my old zebco for sure lol
When he said,” if you’re alone like I am” I felt that
I was going to say the exact same thing. But i guess that comment was already made. So i just liked yours instead 🤣
Lol the feels
You a real 1.

Howabouthetruth
I do that all the time when I am reeling in the line from a aftermath of a backlash.
How I've always done it as well, came intuitively as a youngster 😂
Clear instruction and good technique! I’ve never thought to use a box to hold my spool. Thanks for the tip!!!
I watched this video around two years ago when I first bought my bait caster, I just wanted to give a late thank you
Yes man! All good!
This was very helpful. I’m a beginner and Thinking about grabbing a baitcaster and exploring how it works etc. nice video. Easy to understand. Thanks!
Almost 12 years later and I got to say dude after watching tons of videos this is by far the best
Thanks!

Spinning reel depends on the direction the reel spins when cranked 😉
Just bought the same one and was wondering how to spool it. Simple and to the point great video thank you.
Where do I buy one of them boxes?
Buzz Bee just by a human to hold it for you instead it’s a little bit cheaper
Lol
😂
i grew up using spinning reel. got my first baitcast today gonna spool it as soon as i get home from work thanks for the video

Jacob Smessaert do you know if dicks sporting goods spools reels for free as well?
@@billysmith3513lol, I guess he doesn't like Dick's sporting goods. He never replied back.
Joe Troutt lol they do
True, but it's always good to learn how to do it yourself. But definitely a time saver if you already know how!
My first time buying one of these bait cast reels and appreciate the lesson here
I've always held the pencil with my feet or set it label up/down, but i gotta admit, the box was clever 👍👍
Also i swore you cut the mainline 😂
Excellent video. It was a big help setting this up for the first time. Thanks.
Best part of low profile baitcasting reels is that you can tie braided line in the holes and won't have to worry about slipping
The holes on many of the spools are beveled and very sharp, always check thoroughly as many will cut the line like a knife.
This man is a genius for that card board box method
At the end of the video, he cuts the line before the guide. You guys might want to cut it after all of the guides so that you don't have to re thread the line through the guides.
If you position the spool to the rear of the box so the edge of the spool touches the box, you can add some drag as you reel.

Make sure you put the line on the reel the same rotation the reel spins from the spool to prevent rats nest when casting and to have a much better cast
LOL... Rats Nest... I've never heard any call it that... Did you mean Birds Nest?
Rats nest?? Must be british, here in America it's called a birds nest
Z71Ranger I’ve heard Rat’s Nest way more often than Bird’s Nest. It’s a pretty common term in the IT world.
I’ve had that happen every time I use it main reason why I’m watching this could you explain more on the rotation of the reel spins do you mean the spins of pulling in line or casting your line? Maybe that’s my whole problem
Jennie Riggle I’m from MN and we some call it a rats nest some call it a birds nest.
This video was super helpful. I’ve been having a lot of trouble with my bait caster
Just subbed. Good video, it was "reel" helpful.

Not trying to be rude but the holes are there to tie the life through two holes so you get no spin.
Line not life
(there's an "edit" button over to the right- no need to re-post)
No they're not, they're ported to save weight, and not all spools are ported.
@@andrewwang3931 They are there for 2 reasons: Weight saving and tie your line to prevent from spinning (especially braided line)
