I didn’t know about all of this and it hurts but every time I see kpop idols doing something from other cultures like it’s normal. Hmmm idk when this is gonna change omg this hurts to see them behaving like this. These idols really need to be more educated. I hope idols really change their ways. What I really noticed was that the reason why Namjoon used the black hairstyles was to look more aggressive and furious. Black hairstyles aren't meant to give off that look. SO many cultures have taken a glance at black culture and then identify it as something "ghetto" or "aggressive". It's honestly sad. I don't wear braids to look like that, I wear braids because it protects my hair and makes it easy to manage. So when people identity our culture that way it's really upsetting.

Being Asian myself, the comments that BTS have said in the past is nothing new unfortunately. In most Asian culture, tanned/dark skin was seen as “ugly” and has been labeled as the “lower class people”. My family and relatives have make these types of comments towards me and other people within our family members and friends, commenting on skin tone, style, language, etc. My mom always commented on my skin, saying I was getting darker and darker. I was even given bleaching soap to brighten my skin. I got into BTS recently this year, and I have notice plenty comments and styles have done that involved colorist/racist/appropriating remarks. I’m not too sure where to stay in this situation, but I am glad this video is out to educate those who need to see the problem when incorporating Black culture into music/style within the KPop industry. I just genuinely hope BTS can somehow open up to this situation and take fault of their mistakes and comments.

Its hard to watch a video like this as an african american girl who has spent 5 years supporting this group. However, it is important to acknowledge the truth. I believe I have likely expected too much out of a group of young korean men raised in a culture that likely doesn’t prioritize black rights, let alone the specific struggles and issues regarding colorism and cultural appropriation. Its saddening but i guess we have to accept things aren’t right in order to change them.

I know every human makes mistakes but what's wrong in accepting and apologizing for that mistake??
And BTS weren't 10 y/o old kids with absolutely no idea when they did these shamfull stuffs, they kept reapeating the same mistakes so many times and still some fans think they didn't had any idea
The media and fans shows them as perfect people, fans treat them like gods so very few amount of people know about this side of BTS, these fans are seriously experts at hiding their idol's fault and defending them blindly

i think most ppl are misunderstanding the point of this vid. Their (sorry idk the uploader's pronouns) intention wasnt to make ppl dislike, hate, or unstan BTS as a whole. I, myself, don't even know half of these problematic actions that theyve done, which says alot abt our fandom's skills at sweeping stuff under the rug. I love bts with my whole heart bcoz theyve helped me mentally and emotionally, and joon is like my main bias, and I am aware of the offenses he has done in the past, but not his other actions, so this vid is actually a great way for non-black stans to be fully educated on something theyve always been ignoring. And it sucks becoz they tend to ignore these actions in order to promote this sort of "perfect," "woke," and "intellectual" image on BTS, when clearly, theyve done soooooo much crap too, yet that doesnt necessarily take away their impact and artistry towards the world. There is so much more than kpop and sitting one's ass all day defending racism disguised as ignorance. Im a poc, and tbh, our schools dont really educate us abt black culture, but that shouldnt prevent one from trying to research and educate themselves. BTS arent bad people, bcoz they clearly have respect for their fans and artistry, but those arent enough to mask their problematic wrongdoings. Stan bts, but make sure to hold them accountable everytime they screw up. It shouldnt be that difficult to protect and stand up for black people, if u ignore the problem instead, its time 2 do some self evaluation lmao
Oh and to add up, stan twt needs to stop using these conflicts as a vehicle to promote which is group is more problematic than the other. Like some of yall really dont care abt black people and just want to take these as chances to further stir up more conflicts instead of properly educating each other and its all fucking sickening.

In terms of BTS making an apology, anyone can put together a few words and call it an apology. Then turn around and continue doing exactly what they were before.
Yes it seems like they've changed a tiny bit since some of this stuff has happened, but it doesn't feel like they've truly understood what they did wrong. Honestly to me it feels like a toddler stopped trying to stick a fork in a socket, simply because you told him not to. They don't really get it.

The worst part is that i can't blame bts in the beggining cuz they grew up in this awful social environment (not only about the skin tone but also fat shaming). That doesn't mean that it's okay, they have to educate themselves more and apologize for their past actions. I grew up in a country with similar believes and i did some sh't without knowing it but i educated myself. I've been into Kpop for about a year and it's sad that black Kpop fans can't enjoy something without one of their favorite groups or idols doing something wrong. I been knew about BTS and their past just by the research I have done but gave them a chance because I do enjoy their music and like their personalities. Do I feel BTS has changed like ARMYs love to claim? No. Now that they are bigger, they have to watch their words and be more careful. My main issue is with the fandom because they love to attack other groups for being problematic or racist yet let someone call out BTS on their shitty past, they will make excuses and sweep it under the rug. They want to act like BTS is woke when none of these Kpop groups are woke. I see it on Twitter and even on TH-cam and it's annoying. The reality is that Kpop as a whole is very problematic and fans love to pick and choose on who's more problematic and who gets a pass. That's why I just tune in for the music because none of the groups we like are innocent. Sad but true.

They do a lot of good and I give people the space to learn and grow but that doesn't mean I'll say they're perfect unproblematic kings, they're human and humans make mistakes. I'm sure they're all genuinely sweet people who have good hearts but they can make mistakes just like anyone else. Calling them out for something doesn't mean you hate them... I love so many Kpop groups but I'm getting sick of the cycle of do the problematic thing then apologize. I can forgive some ignorance of course, I don't know everything about every culture but when people from that culture speak up - LISTEN TO THEM!! This isn't a Kpop only thing either, I'm living in the US and we do it here too... it happens everywhere it really needs to stop.

I’m black American, these things were shocking to hear about BTS. I would hate to be born in a homogenous country that only shows the bad stereotypes of black people or any other race other than their own. The saddest thing is the colorism they have among their own people.....even with a tan they are still not as dark as a caramel, brown skinned person. It’s really sad & weird to me that this definition of “dark” “black” is a tan bc they all are around the same skin tone either way in my opinion.
    Western - “I need a tan”
Eastern - “I need to stay out the sun”
As smart as RM is & how much he reads. As smart as all of them are they should really educate themselves especially when traveling to different countries. Read more into colorism, racism as they continue to grow. They all really look up to & admire RM (Namjoon) so hopefully he can shed light on his mistakes & the importance of this.

A lot of the comments here pretty much sum up exactly how I feel about cultural appropriation in general. When I got into BTS I created a Twitter fan account for the purpose of interacting with other African armies, and even joined several group chats on WhatsApp.
But as time went on and conversations progressed, I noticed a lot of armies raising the flag of "cancellation" when a K-pop group does something disrespectful or insensitive towards another culture, but when it's BTS the excuses and blame shifting start pouring: It's not the boys' fault, their companies made them do it, it happened long ago and they apologized... Stuff like that.
And if someone even dares disagree with the apologists mass they are getting cancelled too.
I get that Armies and BTS went through a lot together, and more often than not the band received and is still receiving unwarranted hate, but when it comes to other cultures, when we raise our concerns it isn't to bash, and compromise their careers in any way. It is to make them aware of what is the problem, why it's a problem and why it should be resolved. If anything them acknowledging the issue raised, apologizing and genuinely getting educated towards the issue and make changes, is just gonna benefit them in the long run.
And by apologizing I mean recognise what is it that you did wrong and express how sorry you are for it. It may just be my view, but most apologies first of all come from the companies (which just dissociates the perpetrator from the offence), and secondly when it's the member apologizing it is pretty vague, meanwhile the offense that happened was specific.
Lastly to people of colour or people from the culture that was appropriated: just because you as an individual see nothing wrong with it, doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with it.
