Please watch the entire video including reading the photos of the black hair stories before you comment. The amount of ignorance I saw in response to my last reaction and on Army twitter prompted me to make this video. I hope it can enlighten at least one person if nothing else. Thank you.

People mixing up Assimilation when blk people have to adjust their hairstyles to make other people comfortable. None of them know that our hair was shaved without our permission, we had to be forced to wear scarfs so that people couldn't be mesmerized by Afro hair.

yeah we don’t. it is hard being a black k-pop fan seeing your culture being used when they don’t even like us blacks. they say we are quick to pull the race card and overreact but they don’t understand. it’s one of the only things of our culture that we know about(music and style). we were brought to America as slaves and it’s hard to trace back our roots. all we have left and know about it our music and style like how we dress and wear our hair. slowly, different races are taking it from us, appropriating it, and they call it appreciation and ignorance and that they don’t what they are doing. it hurts us to see that and they don’t understand that it’s all we have. they’re taking everything from us and making it “cool and trendy” but it’s not just that.

I don't know why some armys feel so bad about calling out BTS when they do something problematic (i am also army). BTS say they want to hear our stories, they wanna hear our voices so if we speak up about it enough for them to see it, they will (or better) listen. People say things like "well they are Korean and don't know anything" but if so, then that is the exact reason we should educate them. Calling them out doesn't hurt anyone, it will help BTS grow and learn as people and artists. BTS has also helped millions of people grow and learn. Army, please see them as human too, no one is perfect.

Exactly! We all know that they’re all good people. Just uneducated. As someone who has lived in Korea you can see that they aren’t really educated in these things especially since it’s a very traditional country. However if you are going to be a world wide star you have to be considerate to the world wide fans. Get information ask the fans on what to know and such things. Education and respect is needed for these things.

I always hate how black people get punished for wearing their own hairstyles because they look "unproffessional" its degrading and offensive. I never understood how people deemed it unacceptable for black people to wear their natural hair, its beautiful and should be respected. Discrimination needs to be stopped.
Also, there needs to be education about this in the kpop industry so they dont keep repeating these mistakes.

I completely understand you and cultural appropriation has become such a common thing that's its frustrating. I am an Indian and many times kpop idols have disrespected my culture as well.
Eg Lee Hyori dancing to Gayatri Mantra( our sacred prayer) , blackpink mocking our dance "Bharatnatyam" and recently the new blackpink song HYLT disrespecting my God and religion. I want all the agencies and the idols to be careful with their work and also the fans should stop defending them.

This is the most valid, necessary and concise cultural appropriation video I see on the internet. It is not about the hairstyle it self on its own but it's the fact that there is a negative connotation some people present it with (not in this case, but more in general),and more importantly the responses that are sometimes literally life threatening to us black people face wearing our own hair from our own culture. Having it glamourized like this while are people losing jobs, getting kick outta school and things like that who are black is what makes it disrespectful. THAT IS WHAT ARMY AND THE REST OF THE WORLD NEED TO UNDERSTAND. Eathing food and listening to music is not appropriation.

I think what really helped me understand this is the fact that he put it on just to further the "hip-hop aesthetic". Even though Hobi may not have had ill intentions behind this hairstyle and album cover choice, it still isn't appreciation because he isn't wearing it to respect and appreciate Black culture, he's only doing it to "fit the vibe".

This completely explains how Hobi's hair is wrong. I had watched 2 of your videos about bts just today and was wondering why his hair was a problem and the whole time, I was thinking that if I want to know then I have to learn about the history and purpose of black people's hair. I learned a little bit that black people's hair back then was braided as like a corn field to plot their escape routes and thats it. Now because of your explanation, I see why his hair is a problem and I hope that BigHit and BTS start to fix their mistakes in the future. I like BTS but now I'm seeing them in a different light. I remember I used to not have a problem with non black people doing these kinds of hairstyles and to a certain degree I still don't, however my opinions changed when I realised that they only wear them for nefarious reasons especially in South Korea where they'll wear them to portray their gangsterism and aggressiveness. When it comes to Kpop and K hip hop, I don't get why they feel the need to wear these hairstyles for their hiphop aesthetic and then turn around and mock the very same hairstyles when they are on black people's hair. They also cannot claim it's appreciation when they have done so many anti black things that they still haven't addressed.

As a black person who has been adopted I didn't really understand or realise these kinds of things since they rarely happened to me personally. Things like these have never bothered me but now I think I better understand how people like me who have actually faced discrimination due to their hair must have felt. Ik im very late but I completely agree. And I luv the way u shared ur opinion and shared the facts u collected. I hate the double standards, I luv BTS but ppl need to hold them accountable. Hobi may have thought he was showing culture appreciation but he wasn’t. So it’s okay to bring it to his attention. Just like ur example, on how they dragged JB and Jackson for doing the same thing. No one should be dragged to begin with. Teach them and show them it isn’t culture appreciation. I luv Jackson and JB and it saddened me how they were getting so much hate for something almost every idol have done, yet they are them main ones getting hate for it. I understand if they do it more than once and are blatantly culture appropriating but come on. Ppl need to stop being hypocritical. There’s nothing bad with holding ur favs accountable. Also ppl need to understand culture appropriation doesn’t equal racist.

For CNS, when I saw the hairstyle at first I was like "isn't that a black hairstyle" After watching this video I understood that it was in fact a black hairstyle, so thank you for that. I was also wondering why didn't Becky G say anything about the hairstyle. She lives in America and I assume she knows that the western take cultural appropriation seriously (as they should). Did they not have an interrupter. Anyways stan Tomorrow x Together since they haven't done anything problematic (that I know of)

Becky G herself has been called out for appropriating Blackness before. Most nonblack don’t care to call out Black appropriation since many of them like to engage in it themselves. So I’m not surprised she didn’t say anything. Txt has been called out for appropriating Native American culture so be careful of calling groups unproblematic without researching them first 😅

Just came across this video. Thank you for making an honest video. When I first saw CNS mv I was confused why people weren't offended as they are for other groups. I searched a bit and some posts(from people who claimed to be black) said that the hairstyle was ok. But the way you explained the difference cleared up my doubts. Kpop is very much based on the rip-off of different cultures.
I was hurt when I first saw the most influential celebrity of Korea use the most sacred hymn from Hinduism for her sultry dance. Sadly they have no regrets and take pride in what they do. :(

I really love your videos. You have educated more about these issues and you are absolutely right. And the worst thing is, that cultural appropriation isn’t just in Kpop, it’s in the whole music industry which is really saddening

Thank u for this video! I remember seeing the cns selfies and it didn’t sit right with me but I couldn’t really pin point why. This video cleared up why it was wrong so thank u for that. And I remember seeing his jhope’s selfies from the mic drop performances and not liking those either. But it feels like these instances are not talked about because everyone wants to focus on how “perfect” BTS is.

thank you for this. when i saw the mv for cns something didn't sit right with me about the hairstyle but i said nothing bc i was afraid and bc i hadn't seen black people say anything about it so i assumed nothing was wrong about it and that i was trying to have this like savior complex (as im latina not black) but know i know that they did. just army's silenced them. so thank you for this and for the information in the beginning of the vid regarding black hairstyles.

As a Korean person living in America trying to figure out why it was wrong for them to wear those hairstyles. And differentiating appreciation and appropriating. I definitely understand now why it is wrong! Rather than getting on to people for doing so we need to educate why. Thank you for this educational video!

Also it made it so much I guess easier to understand why this is a problem. I decided to think back about how people made funny of eyes because they were thin but now people are getting surgery to Asian eyes. It made me upset. Now I know this is nothing compared to the history of the hairstyles black people have. With their hairstyles to even dating back to slavery.

I have to say a big thanks for this video. When I first saw these hairstyles and stuff and never thought much about it. But now that I see this I see that these idols were in the wrong. I'm very young so I did not see the problem until I went deeper into the subject. Thank you so much for helping me to see the value of black culture and why these idols need to stop and educate thselves on the black community and how they use it. Whether appreciation or appropriation

i wonder if anyone else working on the mv said anything, and what was said to them in response?
i actually didn't know it was a remix/cover type thing in the first place, so his hair felt extra out of place for me. Thank you for explaining more in dept. it's frustrating that this was happening even in 2019, i thought we had grown out of that and learned after the early eras, and especially since they have more of a say with their looks now.

I'm honestly a bit frustrated atm, cuz my parents see no problem with BTS (or anyone for that matter) wearing gel locks, dreads, braids etc and they say that prohibiting non-Black artists from wearing traditionally Black hairstyles, doesn't solve the root of the problem of racism and discrimination against Black ppl but can actually worsen it's consequences by focusing ppl's energy and efforts on hairstyles instead of eg fighting police brutality. Essentially they mean that if Black ppl weren't discriminated against (eg for their Hairstyles) and if they were given credit for their culture (which would automatically result from equality) then non-black ppl wearing those Hairstyles wouldn't be a problem. So what we should solve, is the discrimination, and not the Hairstyles u know? And I sorta see their point, but also I agree with what u said in this video and I'm not sure it's as simple as my parents would like it to be. And regardless, Idols wearing eg braids is obv still offensive to a lot of ppl, soo I wanted to ask for your opinion
As a sidenote I really enjoy ur videos so far, they're all incredibly well researched and the editing is amazing honestly, like thx soo much for all the time and effort u put into this...

Someone put it in this perspective somewhere on the internet and it was really impactful. OP had something along the lines of - 'You can't tell me to calm down or call it appreciation when you can decide whenever you want or don't want to have cornrows or loccs, when we don't have that choice and are born with hair that is discriminated against but when you guys wear it, it's "cool" or "artistic".'
