This was my father's car! He passed away in 2009 at age 97, & I donated it to Volunteers of America to be auctioned off. Just found out recently about Caliautobrokers purchasing the car & putting it up for sale on Ebay with your subsequent purchase. Very emotional for me to see his car in your video, but am very pleased to see it being well taken care of & appreciated. Obviously, dad took very good care of it. Limited space here. Much more I could tell you. Please comment.
My roommate back in 1982 had a Brown metallic 2 door Fleetwood with tan leather interior! It had the “gold package “. Beautiful car drove like floating on air! He hated driving, so I drove it a lot! The 1981 in your video is beautiful! It’s evident it’s been very well maintained and cared for!
The engine in that car is the last actual Cadillac engine used in their cars. That 6 liter V8 is destroked with smaller piston but is the 472-500 Cadillac engine block. Some of those engines were used as late as 1984 but only in limousines and ambulances. I have a beautiful almost show room floor white on white with burgundy leather 1989 brougham Cadillac that looks identical to your 1981 and its a wonderful car. I purchased it in 1997 19 years ago and it had 62k miles and today has 112k miles but has been well maintained and updated with new radiator and retrofit for the air conditioner and has the 307 Oldsmobile cast iron block and heads used in 89 and is PLENTY of power. My car can blend in with new cars and looks like a new one itself...LOL
That is correct. The 368 VIN code 6 (4 barrel) as well as the 368 VIN code 9 (fuel injected, like this car in the video) were used through the 1984 model year, but only on commercial type cars as you said. Most folks see it as a "one year" engine and that is because it was only used across the board in 1981. These are very good engines. Many folks made them run on all eight cylinders and did away with the modulated displacement system. As I recall, Eaton was involved with that and in 1981, computers were in their infancy and the computing power wasn't there to make the 4-6-8 modulated displacement work well at the time, so it was considered a "failure" by many. Disconnect the system and you have a very reliable 368 fuel injected V8. This car is a class act, no doubt about it.
Beautiful car, I hope you've received enjoyment from it since posting the video. My Dad bought an '81 d'Elegance new and still has it - maroon color, with the sunroof (moonroof?) and wire wheels. The sound of the turn signals in your clip reminds me of road trips across the States when I was a kid. Great video. His 864 still works after 100K miles, go figure. UPDATE: I asked some questions and figured out why the 864 still works. Apparently the original system on my Dad's car was troublesome (just like it was for everyone else). Cadillac actually made improvements to the 864 since it was supported on limousines and commercial vehicles through 1984. Since my Dad kept taking the car back to the dealer to get the 864 fixed, he got an upgrade to the '84 package which apparently by then had the majority of the bugs worked out.
This Cadillac is clean for being 1981 same year I was born this Cadillac is 40 years old now this video from 9 years ago what a classic hopefully you still got this Cadillac great video
@Jan Perea, I only logged in now after a longish break and was really surprised to find your comment. You can rest assured that the car is being well cared for. It was recently featured in issue 5/2013 of Finland's premier classic car magazine "Mobilisti".
Awesome car man, you don't have to run american fluids, but you can also look into high zinc oils. Also, check out jay leno's garage on youtube, you'll like it
Beautiful car! These are my idea of dream cars! My dad had a 87 and a 88 at same time, I loved driving the 87 such a smooth powerful drive! Those years both had an Oldsmobile 307 V8 , I would love to find one like yours! Very nice!
Great review! My great-grandfather had one of these in triple brown. I also had a Commodore Vic-20 as an an older child. Then I moved on to Atari computer. Still have the games and everything!
Hey, nice car man! These 80's Fleetwood are one of the best looking Cadillacs ever made, and until the 1988 models were made in Detroit, while the 89 to 92 models were made in Arlington, Texas. I currently own a loaded black on black STS IV, with 35,000 miles which I love! I always liked the blue on blue color though, especially those gorgeous D'Elegance leather seats. If you properly maintain it, it will provide many years of cruising enjoyment. Cheers!
Just one other thing ... blue is my favorite color, and it is always a thrill to see some European American Car enthusiasts. Glad to see how you appreciate and take great care of your Caddy! After all - like the old Cadillac television ads said: "IT'S A CADILLAC"!
These Cadillacs is just so wonderful to drive ! I have a 1981 Cadillac De Ville 4 doors sedan with the 368 4-6-8 engine. You have a Nice and Beautiful car :)
That is a beautiful Caddy you have there. I had a 1984 Cadillac Sedan De Ville and it was a nice car, never gave me a minutes problem mechanically, but when it came to power a Chevy Chevette with an 4 cylinder and an automatic transmission had more get up and go than my caddy did. That was without a doubt the sickest car for power that I've ever driven in my life, and still got horrible gas mileage. I also had a 1973 Eldorado Cadillac with a 501 cubic inch motor and it would flat fly and got great gas mileage. I drove it to Philadelphia Pa. on a tank of gas which is 475 miles one way and then one tank back. That's pretty good for a car that weighed over five thousand pounds with that size motor. But it got great mileage in town too. I loved it and I've kicked myself everyday since I got rid of it. I also had a 1978 Lincoln Town car, it had a 460 cubic inch motor and would also get up and go quite well and also got good gas mileage. It's another one that I've kicked myself for every day for getting rid of. If I ever get my hands on another Eldorado or Lincoln of those years I'll never get rid of them. They were both awesome cars with a great ride, luxury, and power. =)
that is one nice Fleetwood Brougham, this car looks like it was kept in someones garage when not being driven. My Mom had a 81 Riviera that was kept in the garage and looked like new when she finally got a new car in 2000 plus in most areas of California, we don't have to worry about rust. The only problem with that V864 was that they didn't have good enough computers in 1981 to properly run the engine well. If your parking brake ever sticks, there is a lever under the dash to release it, my 94 SeVille does this once in a while
Wow that is nice!! I'd love to take that car on a road trip from here in Alabama to back home in Arkansas on the highways and interstates between here and there. Nice and comfy cruising.
absolutely stunning my friend!Great choice in color.Im a born and bread American and my grandmother is half finnish so to see that car in finland is awesome so the wonderful people where your at can see classic American luxury and style.
Thank you for posting this video. My first car was this exact model, with a sunroof. Brought back alot of good memories.Nice touch, adding the part when you take it for a ride...
Nice Cadillac! I had one of this series, same color, charcoal vinyl roof, a 1977 DeVille d'Elegance with the fuelinjected 425 cui V8 (7.0 L). No enginenoise in the interior and barely at full throttle!
The 425 VIN code "T" fuel injected V8 cars were quite rare in 1977-1979, most were 4 barrel carbureted. As I recall, it was a combination Bosch and Bendix system.
You will find the rear end gears are really tall about 2.3 to 1 which means you are driving in an overdrive ratio all the time, second gear will take you to about 85 mph because of the tall differential gearing.
From my reading on the V8 6-4 the system can be re-connected via a single wire to the Transmission. This can be connected to a switch inside the vehicle so you could turn it on and off manually when on the highway or at extended idle. Thus giving you the flexibility to run full time V8 or the displacement on demand as originally designed. Beautiful car BTW.
The air vents facing upwards were driving me insane hehe. But man, such a beautiful car and what a great video. The VIC 20 on the rear shelf is genius. In fact, I'm going to do it this week!
The scenario that was explained to me is as follows: you're coasting along at a stable speed and the system disconnects 2 or 4 cylinders, then you come to a sudden stop (such as at traffic lights), but the light or whatever changes immediately. Now if you accelerate rapidly, the system can be too slow to react and inject fuel to cylinders that still have their ignition off. Not sure how many, if any, fires have started this way, but this guy ran a GM workshop.
@TwiztedAnimator Yes, it has the V8-6-4, but the modulated displacement system has been disconnected. Without it, the engine works beautifully and has plenty of power. It is mechanically very solid, any problems with it were with the displacement system. Fuel economy without the system is about 17 mpg highway, 11 mpg urban (there are no traffic jams to speak of in most of Finland).
Great video! Well done! love it. I just picked up an '80 Eldorado Biarittz off a farmer in here Alberta. (Canada) Hope you enjoy that awesome Caddy..... love the blue.... mine has the same blue hues.
Great choice on the Caddy. Wise choice getting the gasoline engine because the diesels were horrible. Nonetheless, this was definitely top of the line back in 1981. The electronics were definitely cutting edge back then. Like you said, it doesn't win drag races. But it such a smooth ride.
What a beautiful Caddy! I really like the old Caddies, although in NYC I'd never be able to park one, so I have a 1960s Corvair instead. Enjoy yours, it's really sweet :-)
from 1982 till 1990 was best years i think for general motors. cadiliac was about big luxery cars.i would mention poor man bentley or Rolls-Royce.2012 its lexus style.mi opnion.you have something for long journey you should t be tired.mi dream to.here or in heaven.i subscribed to you
Answer this, and you'll have answered your question: "Did consumer CD players exist in 1981?" It has the original "Symphonic Sound System" with AM/FM tuner and auto-reversing cassette player. I use a cassette adapter for my iPod and Nokia N9 to catch tunes on the go - the sound quality is surprisingly good.

Have you looked under your rear seat? Most American cars have their list of original options on a sheet of paper under the rear seat; we had a Chevrolet Caprice back in the day, and it had one. Haven't taken out the seat on this one. The title just lists the VIN. I had a service technician strongly recommend deactivating V8-6-4, because it can in a worst case scenario cause an engine fire. This was already done when I got it, and the car's not overly thirsty without it, so I've left it as is.
Nice Cadillac. I have a 91 Fleetwood Brougham with the 5.7 Liter engine. Needs some work. I am restoring it. If you ever need any parts. Just let me know. I live in Florida. I go to my local Junkyard and there are many of these cars in there. They let you go in and pull your own parts. You have a Mint brougham. dont ever sell it. Good Luck.
I watched your other vid. Beautiful car. You need to get the chime fixed when you crank it up. @ 3:10 .I think the striker is too close to the bell and it's dragging. I think you can bend that back a little like you would on a clock.
I saw this same model in burgundy on a dealer lot in ‘81. No intent to buy, just to look. It was during an oil embargo and such cars weren’t selling well...there was alternate-day gas rationing in ‘80 or ‘81. A huge hassle.
i remember reading an interesting test report comparing a Cadillac about this vintage with a Chevrolet Caprice of the same year. the result was there was no practical difference in terms of luxury/performance/ride etc.. to make it fair of course the Caprice was fully loaded with every possible option. I just though the comparison was interesting, although for no particular reason.
I remember that in a 1971 edition of motor trend (I think). They compared a fully loaded 71 caprice classic to a fully loaded 71 Sedan DeVille. However a fully loaded 81 Caprice Classic is nowhere near as advanced or luxurious as this 81 Fleetwood Brougham IMO.

it certainly isn't, *but i couldn't agree more* .

This was a pleasure to watch! Such a beautiful car! Thank you, sir!
Nice video, having owned two of them, I can "feel" the ride with your 1st person perspective out the window. Those Fleetwood Broughams are smooooth.
Congratulations to your beautiful fleetwood
In 1981, a friend of the family bought a new Caddy 2 dr, Burgundy on Burgundy. Just beautiful.
That car has more luxury options than my brand new car! What an impressive car.

Head lights are required in Finland even when it's not dark. You learn something new everyday.
I have a 92 Brougham, I love it, the last year of that style

Had one just like yours. Best for traveling cross country
Thanks. There are small issues to fix of course, here and there, but I'm happy with the overall condition of the car.
We're a Finnish family and my Aunt owned one of those! Nice video!

I miss these cars.
Your English is superb. Nice car.
It's in great condition. Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful Caddy! I really like the old Caddies, although in NYC I'd never be able to park one, so I have a 1960s Corvair instead. Enjoy yours, it's really sweet :-)
my dream car
Awesome car, I have a 1992 DeVille Coupe with the 4.9L V8 @200 HP. (Direct Fuel Injection) Pretty nice riding vehicle.
10:50 ... lovely V-8 Sound!!!!
Better than 3-Zylinder oder Electric driver, hehe!
How is it to get spare parts for your car?
Greets from Germany
Beautifiul Caddy!
The L62 runs fine on 10% ethanol, no additives are needed. Fuel with up to 10% ethanol was already widely available in the US in 1981.
I love the Cadillac Eldorado's from 1985-1988 they were awesome luxury cars built in their time.
cool car it looks like it just came out of the factory.
from 1982 till 1990 was best years i think for general motors.

Beautiful. I'm so happy for you

It has the original "Symphonic Sound System" with AM/FM tuner and auto-reversing cassette player. I use a cassette adapter for my iPod and Nokia N9 to catch tunes on the go - the sound quality is surprisingly good.
Beautiful car ^____^
Good looking car, I have a 1980 with the carburated 368, pretty slow but they look good doing it.
that's a real car you've got there, but i can't help but wonder how you're gonna get spare parts and such for this piece of american awesomeness in Finland. cheers.
The engine is really aa good one . Convert intake to regular. carb. System. 4-6-8 prone to catching fire but if you convert it it will be fine . Good luck buddy

Very nice car! I love it...
Have a '78 Seville Elegante in my garage...
I remember these cars were pretty much very silent, never heard it's engine "roar", not even a hiss, it starts and you can't even hear it go.
Great Review.
Awesome!!
Thanks :) I actually have many more videos online, but they are in Finnish and under the channel "v2fi". I mostly do gadget reviews etc.
Good Luck.
The model is a "Neo Scale Models" 1:43 resin model, you'll find retailers easily by Googling it.
Very nice car!
Much love to you
Really cool car
