The line that brings joy to their faces during a fight is turned on its head when referred to Gilmore. It always means something is really close to death- usually one or so hits away from death.
This episode is testament to the skills of Matt Mercer. He's created an npc either by design or accident that's so embedded in the world he's created and so cherished by his players that they use a sixth level heal spell on him without a thought and he's the first guy they look to see is okay. His wellbeing brings tears to their eyes and it's simply joyous from a viewer's perspective to see such investment. Awed. Simply awed.
dontbelievethehype69 their joy when they saw him at the speak easy last episode was genuine, vac flirting, genuine, comic relief at torchure scenes "Gilmore a glorious goods" an ingrained part of the story. A few even looked for him WHEN the dragon was coming. It does not surprise me too much.
i played dark heresy for several years and created a nameless npc which people called "Doorboy" he eventually got a name and now has been spread across 5 other campaigns created by my friends it still brings a tear to me every time i hear him in another campaign im just like "i made that"

matt is such a genius for giving them those thugs to fight in the first half of the episode. these guys have seen their entire world crumple down in the last two episodes, they needed a win, and some low-level looters to beat up for going through their friend's shop was exactly that

Today our heroes massacre what equates to traumatized, newly oppressed peasants with worlds fewer resources and capability than themselves who were simply doing what they felt they had to in order to survive the dragon that just obliterated 1/4 or so of the city. Heroes…
Collaborators’ is inaccurate. Peasants without the resources or god-like abilities the party has. Peasants who just lived through a MASS casualty event, same as the party. Vox Machina failed these people too.

I'm so convinced that Liam/Vax's face when they found Gilmore was completely sincere. Both Vax and Liam love Gilmore, and they've known the character for years... both the player and the character have a stake in him. And even if Liam wasn't really sad/worried, that was some damn fine acting.
Boy, let me just say, Vasselheim is probably the safest place in the world for everyone right now. A whole city containing the most powerful clerics and most experienced monster slayers in the world.

Liam was born in 1976 making him 42 in 2018, Sam is born the same, for the rest I cannot remember. EDIT:from what I could find Matt Mercer was born in 1982 making him 36 in 2018 (same as me actually, well technically a few months older as he was born in June) and Marisha was born in 1989 making her the youngest member of the Critical role team (well at least from the people whose birth dates I know)

Honestly as great as Vox Machina is I've looked at the characters of the Mighty Nein and I'm so looking forward to it because it seems the group got really creative with the characters. Going to miss VM when I finish though.
@@Ston3D.FreeN7 Characters are the best part of C2. Plot threads really didn't grab me for most of the first half of the campaign, but the characters kept me hooked from ep1. You'll love it.
If Travis used stones endurance during that match he would have won. I was so passed lol. Same when he didn't rage during the arm wrestling. They were converting from pathfinder so it's understandable lol. I like when they forget things because it makes it genuine.
I think this is my favorite episode solely because of how excited Travis gets when he finally crits. He is like a child in a candy shop, and when Travis is happy everyone is happy.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he wound up marry a metallic dragon and having half dragon offspring. Yet I can definitely see Gilmore marrying a brass, silver, or gold dragon. Yet for some reason I do see him marrying an ancient silver dragon.

This is my first watch, so I'm not sure, but if you're referencing what happens later, as well as it might be Taliesin Jaffe's intuition, it can also be that Matt Mercer just listened and thought it was a nice idea ;P
@@facjad955 I think it's the latter... it was such a sound theory put forth by Taliesin/Percy and I think Matt was like "yoink!". Although... Matt IS brilliant too and is quite capable of writing such immersive theories into his stories.

@@SocialistSadako In the real world, yes. That would be despicable. And there are games that are set up to be very negotiation-heavy, where you would be rolling for perception, insight, diplomacy and deception most of the time, with very few combat scenarios thrown in. As a video game example, the Deus Ex games come to mind where you can really complete the game as a pacifist (outside of the boss fights). Even here, the group goes for the diplomatic solution nearly as often as they take the combat option (when such an option exists). Matt talked about the idea of having encounters play out as combat vs. diplomacy in the last episode's DM talk session. This one, felt like more of a "the players needed the catharsis of a win after the sequence of losses", and the DM obliged. Are you not enjoying the series as much as you thought you would? It's ok to not like something. Even the Critical Role website talks about how some of the themes may not appeal or be outright triggers for some viewers, and it is perfectly ok to skip them or not watch the series altogether. Life's too short to do things you don't enjoy!

i believe that at that moment there was an unknown choice between the treasure on the well and Gilmore. If they had chosen to pick the treasure, Gilmore would died, and they would get some powerful stuff. I prefer them saving Gilmore.
@@dragonheart1236 Beholders are easily defeated.. that center eye would be the easiest squishy target for an archer IRL. Don't even have to be within the Beholder's range to kill it with a hail of arrows. Reality would be hilarious, since adventurers start at the level of an Olympic athlete, at level one. They're literal demigods in our world, spellcasters just walking WMDs. It's not a lore issue at all, Beholders are actually functionally less powerful than most mid to end campaign adventurers. That and they're sapient so a particularly clever everyday person can talk the beholder into burying itself under a mountain of rumble by convincing it the walls are earth elementals sent to spy on it by it's rivals. 😂 Plus it's a game.. reality doesn't apply, that's boring AF.
Watching this after game of thrones finale... (Spoiler alert I guess) It's really something when you realise that a voice actor in a live DnD game can make the horrors of a city attacked by dragons feel more real than an ultra high budget tv show...
I think it was HP Lovecraft or somebody who said this, but your mind paints the most vivid of horrors that a direct description could never capture. Whatever you're imagining is a hundred times worse than what anybody could write.
I'd argue perspective is the key. Retell the narrative of the looters and you see a bunch of peasants struggling to survive attacked by a very powerful group of 1%ers. These looters would have died as fast as the civies on the greyskull lawn.

I know i am MANY years late, but goddamn the way Mercer crafts these characters to get the cast to love them. Gilmore, Allura, and Jarret are three prime examples of this. The players would legit cry if anything bad happened to them.
"Ah.. Its always what I assumed I'd see in my last moments..." *OOF.* LIAM. LIAM WHY. WHY MUST YOU TRY TO ROMANCE KIKI. I love Keyleth, but GOD DAMN BOI, THAT MADE MY HEART FLUTTER AND IT WASN'T EVEN DIRECTED AT ME.
I think the comics explained how Vax harbored feelings for Keyleth for the first time. If you haven't read, what's next is somewhat a "spoiler" if you're looking to pick up the comics. I mean, yeah, it was a typical, cheesy love at first sight but it was a genuine feeling that, given Vax's background, caught him off guard. I don't know how accurately the comics portray Critical Role's early sessions before the show, but Keyleth does give off this silly, awkward and naive disposition, and having the "trust no one" kind of personality of Vax from working with criminals, I'm guessing the fact that this very silly lady who saved his life and then just openly conversed with him without giving off any inkling of deceit really left a mark on him. His relationship with Gilmore, on the other hand, was as he explained it to Gilmore. Vax was dancing with Gilmore, enjoying it while the music lasts. But, as all things, it's bound to stop and Vax's recent dance with Death led him to contemplate what he really values.
Better story, worse visuals. I choose the better story. At this point it is a lot like an audiobook, but the story is often completely above my expectations unlike most audiobooks I've read.
The amount of times I've checked his wiki to see where he's from or if he grew up at some point in England. I'm English and his accent is so accurate for some parts of the UK
On recent episode of dirty laundry on dropout he does an Irish accent, I had tonlook up to see where he was from, cuz 8 forgot duh he's American. I don't know how good it is, but it fooled me.
Spoilers...(kinda) Later on in the campaign (I don’t remember what episode) but I think they ask her what ever happened to the skull and she does tell them that she gave it to Allura to keep safe and they’re all okay with it (it was many episodes later and had forgotten about it)

Just looking at Liam's face while the whole scene with Gilmore. I can't not tear up. Just seeing his distraught face is heartbreaking. Although this is probably one of my favorite episodes now.
The way Liam looks absolutely heartbroken when Vax sees Gilmore and rushes over to him breaks my heart. He really cares for him and that's so wonderful to see!

For someone who's got such a crush on her it seems like the last thing Vax wants to do is have an actual conversation with her. I'm sure Vaxleth gets better along the way, but so far I absolutely understand Keyleth's confusion and frustration at this man who makes a big confession and then never hangs out or communicates.
@@tiril6681 Standard "I have no idea how dating works" protocol. You tell your crush how you feel, then you back off to give them space. You reason that either they're not interested, in which case you've saved them the awkwardness of having to tell you by giving them a wide berth, and if they're interested, well... now they know you are, so they only have to tell you and you can try and work it out. Not saying it's particularly effective, but that's generally the train of thought.

Ashley Johnson being alone in a room far away with a spotty Skype connection that keeps going down and texting Liam to say she rolled a 4 is just.... so powerful. Like I wish that if Orion ever watched after splitting from the party he could take away that with no one's eyes on her in any capacity she was willing always to fail, even if she could have cheated without any repercussions, and maybe learning something from that. Like for every bad roll Ashley has, even though its a bummer and she can't help or do the thing she wants, I feel a really deep sense of appreciation for her honor as a player.
the hate on orion was exaggerated, they all metagame and try to use information their characters didn't have access to and many times Laura does the same thing but she does it in a much cuter way and Matt is like "ok whatever take the 23 roll then" so people really need to calm down on hating Orion. He helped build this show and while he wasn't perfect, fans made it out to be much worse than it was. Only his last episode did he act inapproriate which also Travis acted inappropriate too. travis' sulking and yelling at Orion was not cool.
@@cFull_Rtrd He overstepped his bounds and tried to dip into everyone else's roles. He even went as far as to try and cheat his way into having an army fight theor battle for them, which would defeat the purpose of them even being present in their own campaign. And while I'm sure we can all agree that meta gaming finds its way into every party, I think most would also agree that the amount and extent of meta gaming that he did was much greater than that of everyone else in the party. He was allegedly using more spells than he had slots and rolling dice ahead of time keeping the rolls if they were good but otherwise reroling them for an actual check. His friends were audibly calling him out on how many uses of spells he had made, which were lost in the moment. That's not to mention any of the other allegations people have made against the guy about his behavior behind the scenes. Regardless of any of that, he just brought the mood of the entire party and session down. The sessions were noticeably less fun for everyone involved while he was present. I would say the hate he got was entirely justified. Personally I gradually noticed how irritated everyone was on screen, and by the time his last episode came around I was enjoying the show less and less. From that episode on though, it was all fun again. I mentioned to my buddies how the actor who played Tiberius was kind of a drag, and they all told me that he leave soon enough and that the show gets better. I'm glad I stuck it out
@@alittlesnag Tbf the army thing wasn't cheating. It was stupid bs and I'm glad Matt shot it down but it wasn't cheating. Ironically the party kinda did something similar with the rebellion but at least it made sense and had them more involved. I wished Orion stayed but improved started working with the party better. Most of the issues were with him and I'm not excusing the behind the scenes stuff. Still the hate he got by fans wasn't fare considering he occasional caught shit for things that weren't his fault. Sadly I get why he was kicked off the show.

Liam is constantly picking up his dice as he counts so everyone just calm down, I guarantee you Liam's math has not always been perfect. Oh my God, I'm so glad Gilmore made it.... Strange how attached one gets to these characters. Speaks volumes about the emersion Matt Mercer and friends create in this. Simply amazing!
And even more amazing when it's an NPC rather than a main character. And I mean that not to discount Gilmore as Just an NPC, but to credit Matt's amazing ability to make us deeply care as much about an NPC as the main character we follow and associate completely with the people who play them

Matt's crazed excitement over minis always makes me smile, cause he's just all "You can sleep! I'll open minis >:333" and Marisha is just nodding like a tired mom its the best
I love that Matt said their actions affected what happened to Gilmore. If they had gone for the loot first and then gone to find him, he would have been dead. Thank the gods they went looking for him first. Don’t know what they (or I) would have done if he didn’t make it.

Perhaps unnoticed, when Vax pulls away from Keyleth's pleas, he's continuing his inner crisis. Who does he choose to follow, his sister or his friends/the woman he loves? In this moment, he chooses his sister, as someone who has always stood beside him.
So, Gilmore managed to duel a Gigantofucking red dragon, and survive. I think they just need to get Gilmore to each of the other cities that're being attacked, and wipe out the "lesser" ancient dragons, one by one. Get dunked on, Drogon!
+johnjoe donnelly Vox machina only did a little damage to that dragon. These things are mountains of HP and damage. The giant red one is about Demi-god level of toughness probably. It's the sort of dragon that countries mobilise their entire army to hold off.

You've really got to appreciate Matt's ability to play the long game, setting up plot points for much later. A few episodes ago we get the first mention of Vecna, which won't culminate for almost another 100 episodes. And of course the whole General Krieg plot point from however far back that has directly impacted events that are currently happening. I wonder how much of the story Matt had written out in advance vs how much he was coming up with as they went along.
Piggy-backing on this, they found a sword of Dragon Slaying during their expedition with the Slayer’s take. Matt is such a careful DM that I doubt that sword was intended for that dragon.
I love that the initial encounter, OOC the players say that they're just going to beat up the looters for looting Gilmore's shop. No Mercy Percy: Shoots 3 Deadly shots that not only blows off 1 looter's arm off but also explodes the guy's skull.
42:43 Honestly, how has no one in the part tried courting Jarrett? The players all obviously love the guy- heck, he's only been mentioned a few times and I've got a dumb crush on the kid!
He managed to hold is own temporarily against a dragon larger than ancient dragon (maybe a great wyrm), though a short period of time I know of entire parties who can't claim such a feat.
That's the best part about RPing. There is no difference. You are your character and your character is you. Liam is the embodiment of that idea and it's amazing to watch! :)
I think his emotions when they found Gilmore were real. His mother died of cancer 2 months before this episode. He has said in more recent interviews that the game taking this dark turn was hard on him but ultimately helped him process his feelings and grief.

This episode is testament to the skills of Matt Mercer. He's created an npc either by design or accident that's so embedded in the world he's created and so cherished by his players that they use a sixth level heal spell on him without a thought and he's the first guy they look to see is okay. His wellbeing brings tears to their eyes and it's simply joyous from a viewer's perspective to see such investment. Awed. Simply awed.
dontbelievethehype69 their joy when they saw him at the speak easy last episode was genuine, vac flirting, genuine, comic relief at torchure scenes "Gilmore a glorious goods" an ingrained part of the story. A few even looked for him WHEN the dragon was coming. It does not surprise me too much.
i played dark heresy for several years and created a nameless npc which people called "Doorboy" he eventually got a name and now has been spread across 5 other campaigns created by my friends it still brings a tear to me every time i hear him in another campaign im just like "i made that"

Honestly as great as Vox Machina is I've looked at the characters of the Mighty Nein and I'm so looking forward to it because it seems the group got really creative with the characters. Going to miss VM when I finish though.

If Travis used stones endurance during that match he would have won. I was so passed lol. Same when he didn't rage during the arm wrestling. They were converting from pathfinder so it's understandable lol. I like when they forget things because it makes it genuine.
I think this is my favorite episode solely because of how excited Travis gets when he finally crits. He is like a child in a candy shop, and when Travis is happy everyone is happy.

@@SocialistSadako In the real world, yes. That would be despicable. And there are games that are set up to be very negotiation-heavy, where you would be rolling for perception, insight, diplomacy and deception most of the time, with very few combat scenarios thrown in. As a video game example, the Deus Ex games come to mind where you can really complete the game as a pacifist (outside of the boss fights).
Even here, the group goes for the diplomatic solution nearly as often as they take the combat option (when such an option exists). Matt talked about the idea of having encounters play out as combat vs. diplomacy in the last episode's DM talk session. This one, felt like more of a "the players needed the catharsis of a win after the sequence of losses", and the DM obliged.
Are you not enjoying the series as much as you thought you would? It's ok to not like something. Even the Critical Role website talks about how some of the themes may not appeal or be outright triggers for some viewers, and it is perfectly ok to skip them or not watch the series altogether. Life's too short to do things you don't enjoy!

@@dragonheart1236 Beholders are easily defeated.. that center eye would be the easiest squishy target for an archer IRL. Don't even have to be within the Beholder's range to kill it with a hail of arrows. Reality would be hilarious, since adventurers start at the level of an Olympic athlete, at level one. They're literal demigods in our world, spellcasters just walking WMDs. It's not a lore issue at all, Beholders are actually functionally less powerful than most mid to end campaign adventurers. That and they're sapient so a particularly clever everyday person can talk the beholder into burying itself under a mountain of rumble by convincing it the walls are earth elementals sent to spy on it by it's rivals. 😂 Plus it's a game.. reality doesn't apply, that's boring AF.

I think it was HP Lovecraft or somebody who said this, but your mind paints the most vivid of horrors that a direct description could never capture. Whatever you're imagining is a hundred times worse than what anybody could write.
I'd argue perspective is the key. Retell the narrative of the looters and you see a bunch of peasants struggling to survive attacked by a very powerful group of 1%ers. These looters would have died as fast as the civies on the greyskull lawn.

I know i am MANY years late, but goddamn the way Mercer crafts these characters to get the cast to love them.

Vax x Gilmore is such a better couple than Vax x Keyleth.
I think the comics explained how Vax harbored feelings for Keyleth for the first time. If you haven't read, what's next is somewhat a "spoiler" if you're looking to pick up the comics.
I mean, yeah, it was a typical, cheesy love at first sight but it was a genuine feeling that, given Vax's background, caught him off guard. I don't know how accurately the comics portray Critical Role's early sessions before the show, but Keyleth does give off this silly, awkward and naive disposition, and having the "trust no one" kind of personality of Vax from working with criminals, I'm guessing the fact that this very silly lady who saved his life and then just openly conversed with him without giving off any inkling of deceit really left a mark on him.
His relationship with Gilmore, on the other hand, was as he explained it to Gilmore. Vax was dancing with Gilmore, enjoying it while the music lasts. But, as all things, it's bound to stop and Vax's recent dance with Death led him to contemplate what he really values.

Better story, worse visuals. I choose the better story. At this point it is a lot like an audiobook, but the story is often completely above my expectations unlike most audiobooks I've read.

I'm sure Vaxleth gets better along the way, but so far I absolutely understand Keyleth's confusion and frustration at this man who makes a big confession and then never hangs out or communicates.

Ashley Johnson being alone in a room far away with a spotty Skype connection that keeps going down and texting Liam to say she rolled a 4 is just.... so powerful. Like I wish that if Orion ever watched after splitting from the party he could take away that with no one's eyes on her in any capacity she was willing always to fail, even if she could have cheated without any repercussions, and maybe learning something from that. Like for every bad roll Ashley has, even though its a bummer and she can't help or do the thing she wants, I feel a really deep sense of appreciation for her honor as a player.
the hate on orion was exaggerated, they all metagame and try to use information their characters didn't have access to and many times Laura does the same thing but she does it in a much cuter way and Matt is like "ok whatever take the 23 roll then" so people really need to calm down on hating Orion. He helped build this show and while he wasn't perfect, fans made it out to be much worse than it was. Only his last episode did he act inapproriate which also Travis acted inappropriate too. travis' sulking and yelling at Orion was not cool.
@@cFull_Rtrd He overstepped his bounds and tried to dip into everyone else's roles. He even went as far as to try and cheat his way into having an army fight theor battle for them, which would defeat the purpose of them even being present in their own campaign. And while I'm sure we can all agree that meta gaming finds its way into every party, I think most would also agree that the amount and extent of meta gaming that he did was much greater than that of everyone else in the party. He was allegedly using more spells than he had slots and rolling dice ahead of time keeping the rolls if they were good but otherwise reroling them for an actual check. His friends were audibly calling him out on how many uses of spells he had made, which were lost in the moment. That's not to mention any of the other allegations people have made against the guy about his behavior behind the scenes.
Regardless of any of that, he just brought the mood of the entire party and session down. The sessions were noticeably less fun for everyone involved while he was present. I would say the hate he got was entirely justified. Personally I gradually noticed how irritated everyone was on screen, and by the time his last episode came around I was enjoying the show less and less. From that episode on though, it was all fun again. I mentioned to my buddies how the actor who played Tiberius was kind of a drag, and they all told me that he leave soon enough and that the show gets better. I'm glad I stuck it out
@@alittlesnag Tbf the army thing wasn't cheating. It was stupid bs and I'm glad Matt shot it down but it wasn't cheating. Ironically the party kinda did something similar with the rebellion but at least it made sense and had them more involved. I wished Orion stayed but improved started working with the party better. Most of the issues were with him and I'm not excusing the behind the scenes stuff. Still the hate he got by fans wasn't fare considering he occasional caught shit for things that weren't his fault. Sadly I get why he was kicked off the show.

Liam is constantly picking up his dice as he counts so everyone just calm down, I guarantee you Liam's math has not always been perfect. I love that Matt said their actions affected what happened to Gilmore. If they had gone for the loot first and then gone to find him, he would have been dead. Thank the gods they went looking for him first. Don’t know what they (or I) would have done if he didn’t make it.

The way Matt looks at the camera after looking in the big box he gets for Critmas you'd think it's either a really good gift or a severed head, he's in such awe there at what he's seeing, like he can't believe his eyes.

Perhaps unnoticed, when Vax pulls away from Keyleth's pleas, he's continuing his inner crisis. Who does he choose to follow, his sister or his friends/the woman he loves? In this moment, he chooses his sister, as someone who has always stood beside him.

So, Gilmore managed to duel a Gigantofucking red dragon, and survive.
I think they just need to get Gilmore to each of the other cities that're being attacked, and wipe out the "lesser" ancient dragons, one by one.

+johnjoe donnelly Vox machina only did a little damage to that dragon. These things are mountains of HP and damage. The giant red one is about Demi-god level of toughness probably. It's the sort of dragon that countries mobilise their entire army to hold off.

He just looked at the dragon funny-like. I think the Dragon hadn't heard of Gilmore's Glorious goods, otherwise he'd have just left Gilmore alone and wanted to shop at his fine establishment instead. ^_^
"If you find a way for me to become a dragon, that would be sexy" is probably Gilmore's best/sexiest line, and that's a high bar.

You've really got to appreciate Matt's ability to play the long game, setting up plot points for much later. A few episodes ago we get the first mention of Vecna, which won't culminate for almost another 100 episodes. And of course the whole General Krieg plot point from however far back that has directly impacted events that are currently happening. I wonder how much of the story Matt had written out in advance vs how much he was coming up with as they went along.
Piggy-backing on this, they found a sword of Dragon Slaying during their expedition with the Slayer’s take.
Matt is such a careful DM that I doubt that sword was intended for that dragon.

I love that the initial encounter, OOC the players say that they're just going to beat up the looters for looting Gilmore's shop.

He managed to hold is own temporarily against a dragon larger than ancient dragon (maybe a great wyrm), though a short period of time I know of entire parties who can't claim such a feat.

I think his emotions when they found Gilmore were real. His mother died of cancer 2 months before this episode. He has said in more recent interviews that the game taking this dark turn was hard on him but ultimately helped him process his feelings and grief.

I think Liam was talking about the tomb episode not this one that is why he crushed the card for the armor he was legit not happy about it but his mother was still not doing well at the time of this episode as well as he has said that Gilmore meant a lot to him Liam not just to Vax. I would also like to point out that I do agree that his emotions in the more where are real.
