Stephen, in full character cosplay and two swords-- one of which is one of the ACTUAL WETA PROPS OF STING USED IN LOTR: That's cute.
Both are actual WETA props. Peter Jackson gave him Sting. Which is the more famous of the two. The other sword is Narsil, Viggo Mortensen gave him it. Steven's Sting is a hero sword, the one that needs to look good in closeups. His Narsil was a working prop used in action scenes in the film so just had to look good for wide shots when actors were in sword fights.

Stephen was not wrong. This was the perfect opportunity to show off the LOTR props to people who know what they are and would care.
Colbert is an expert at reading his audience --- he knew showing Sting to this group would get man and lady boners from all of them!
Had to add the 666th like. And Colbert is my favorite mainstream for his unapologetic geeking in LOTR. I was raised on JRR Tolkien, Colbert is kin, and this had ME geeking!

Meh, it was cringey and creepy. At one point even Stephen, the Man Who Won TV, the one who is famous for being able to make everyone around him look good, seemed a bit uncomfortable.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a critter and still a big fan of Sam Riegel. I won't hold one mistake against him, but... To me, it just seemed like that one dude who makes a pass at a girl who isn't interested, then either continues or demands she explain why she isn't interested.

Also funny Sam telling Stephen how to calculate Initiative, then Sam goes on to say he got a 2 on his Initiative roll which isn't possible since he has a +4 Dex. So he told Stephen "roll a d20 and add you Initiative modifier" then goes on to roll a d20 and not add his own Initiative modifier lol.

Always a bit sad that Colbert has so little time. Not even for me but for him. I can only imagine how much fun he'd have if he was a guest for a few episodes on the main show with everybody goofing around.
lol idk if critical role could handle steven, he is such a critical thinker that he would thwart or cause a lot of problems for mercers story haha, first thing he says, you built a fire in plain sight near the base haha
I think a big issue is also that CR is west coast, while Steven is east coast. Im assuming this was filmed in NYC. Id imagine all 9 people have crazy schedules.
I feel like a lot of the borderline humor that CR engages with, would not fit with Colbert's brand image, he'd have to be in a family friendly campaign.
It would be cool to get to see him relax a bit and have the time to do a couple of episodes as a guest character.
Aww he's so much fun. The older one from a couple years ago, he had such 1980's DnD PTSD that he had to scout and check everything constantly and it was hilarious. He's a lot more open in this one. It's adorbable.

I don't take notes either...and most groups I've played with hate it. Not because I'm always asking questions...but because I answer questions without digging for anything. I never answer questions not asked of me directly, however. That's just rude. But I still often get labeled as a "know-it-all". Same problem in school. Never studied once, never got less than a B on any test.
It is not as great as it sounds...because I remember shitty stuff just as well as good stuff. And there is WAY more shitty stuff.

Marisha and Sam, who takes good notes as well, are great players to have when the DM plays with such a deep and elaborate lore such as Matt's Exandria or if the DM plays with a more rp-heavy genre than monster smashing like political intrigue or negotiations.
Quite frankly, the ppl around you just sound like assholes. I hope you can be around more supportive ppl in the future, buddy. Don't blame the activity tho.

Just as a side note: Never underestimate the power of Tasha's hideous laughter.... it is a monster of a spell. Fun for roleplay and effective....

My husband, who is not a Critter (unlike me), heard about Colbert playing with the M9 and was all, "Huh, I should watch this with you," and within minutes he was HOWLING with laughter. I may *slowly* be able to convince him to start watching C2. Wish me luck!

Having only really seen the Stephen Colbert clips - do you have any recommendations of where I should start/ how you might hook someone on the show?
@@aaron58107 I would probably look at one of their one-shot adventures on twitch or their youtube channel. If you like it you can choose one of the campaigns and start from the beginning. Campaign 2 is still my personal favorite (the Colbert episode featured three of the characters from that campaign.), so that's what I would recommend, but all three are a little bit different in style and theme, so you might get hooked on one of the others instead.
Campaign 1 starts "in the middle" of an adventure since this is when they took their home game online... And the production quality has improved immensely since those early days, if that is something you care about.
Some say to start at episode 25-ish, if I remember correctly (someone might jump in and correct me if I'm off an episode or two) to begin with a new chapter of the story so to speak, and skip some of the rough spots in the beginning - it took a few episodes for them to find their sea legs, much more cross talk and things of that nature in the first episodes.
It has it's own charm, but maybe the charm comes from either being there with them live when it happened or by knowing what they have become and who they are as people, so it may not appeal to a new watcher - depending on preferences of course.

I love how Matt takes certain courtesies with certain guests. When Sam asked if he could uncanny dodge and Matt casually asks him if he has uncanny dodge as an ability, promoting Colbert to have a look at his abilities to see if he has anything that would interact with the situation. He really is an amazing person =-)
Agreed! He's never condescending or impatient, always knows how to reach his players regardless of skill level (or how recent the last time they'd played). I was noticing how he subtly changed how he said things, like after Stephen used the older way of describing dice, as in "2 die 6" instead of "2d6" and Matt just rolled with it, saying it the same way he did.
You can really tell how much he loves his job, and takes great joy from seeing his players swept up in the magic of D&D :)

I love watching Stephen’s face light up when Ashley, Sam and Marisha begin role playing…he’s so in his element. I hope he gets to do it again but with the whole cast for a full session, with battle maps. It would be so cool!

I imagine that we'll have to wait until after he gives up hosting the Late Show. I can't imagine Stephen ever getting the time to drop a day to do a full Critical Role show otherwise. Even when he's on hiatus, he'd be researching, writing, promoting etc and trying to slip in some recreation time. I'm sure he'd love it though and the full cast would love roleplaying with him.
I think it could happen like a 3 episode guest spot. Problem is, I think the late Show is in new York isn't it? So that's basically impossible unfortunately.
But I bet he'd crap himself over the experience of a full play in their studio.
Why not have CR do a traveling show? They could go on tour and game in front of big crowds --- the live energy would be insane --- they could stop in NYC and have Stephen drop by for a session!

I asked his people if he could do an interview on his past gaming and some of the history he has with old school AD&D.

Masterful DMing again. Do we expect anything less? Mid combat turn (their first turn) Stephen's gets light heartingly frustrated at the gargoyles reacting to sound not sight. Then Matt describes the Gargoyles as having vacant holes for eyes and their behavior is more based on listening. Just... amazing how invested Matt gets in making sure someone is having a good time when he's the head of the table.

That’s hard for a lot of people to do, not interrupting when they know the answer. You have to read the person to know if they’re hoping for help or want to find the answer themselves. I think Matt made the right call!

The book name wasn't the point Stephen was enthusiastically telling his story and Matt just let it ride to avoid interrupting him and his thought process.

LMAO not the first time it's happened. In Campaign 1, Liam is playing a Rogue named Vax'ildan and I think he got a 34 on a stealth check or something and Matt said something like, "You've stealthed so well that you've gone into the next campaign," I can't remember the exact quote. XD

I'm only about halfway through campaign 2, but twice so far Nott has rolled a Nat 20 on Stealth while Jester has Pass Without A Trace up and has got a 43 on Stealth
Vett had a 42 close to the end of campaign 2. That's a kinda frequent joke they make.

I think the Darrington Brigade would be a perfect group of characters for celebrity guests to play one shots with, because they are not part of a campaign so watching the one shots with them would be 100% spoiler free.

as someone still watching C2 this was spoiler free as far as I could tell other than character descriptions (and maybe wings?). It felt like it took place in a "time apart" from the events of C2 so I didn't feel like anything was spoiled. If there were some subtle things, I didn't pick up on them.
I totes agree that the DB characters would be ideal for this sort of thing, since they work for a nonprofit as well.
The first Red Nose Day video was the first time I heard about Critical Role. Matt’s story telling really captured me. Now, however many years later, I have seen literally every thing on the CR channel, including all the one shots and Talks Machina.

Aside from being generally fun to watch, this episode is also a great example of what a bite-sized one-shot can be for when you don't have a lot of time to play.
Not a usual audience of Critical Role. They are so nice! And Colbert is a gentleman. Lovely energy and rapport at the table!

always blown away by Mercer's skills as a DM, but the way he is able to direct the table and keep them from getting off track is beautiful. I mean his story telling is amazing, but the subtle way he just made the storm sound effect and everyone immediately hands the story back to him from the group discussion was beautiful!
Not to mention riding and adapting to Stephen's 'reality checking for inconsistent plot holes' and making it part of the story (gargoyles only hear sound). Great DMs take the players' comments or ideas and make them the new truth in the world to both keep things consistent and to validate the players.

I honestly got legit chills when he said Bozyn is nowhere to be found, I thought something terrible is gonna happen.

Matt is incredible. He’s an excellent story teller but also very gentle with newcomers or old timers like Stephen who haven’t played in a long time. I love him so much.
He had much of the same gentility with Ashly when she was playing on and off.
I would love to see Stephen guest star on an actual episode of Crit Role.

Steve loves DnD, has talked about how much he enjoyed the one-shot he did with Matt, and Matt has said how much he loved DMing for Steve. I’m sure everyone on both sides would be on board.

I love how they made the short sword with a bigger hilt, so it would give the illusion on camera that the actor was smaller, like a hobbit, when they held it with two hands ^~^
I love how every time that Mr. Colbert does anything considered low-key in his very busy schedule he just nerds out for half of the time.
Is it bad that I want more? This is longer, yes, but I want an even longer one. Like, 3.5 hours. Damn, Steven is such a great player and addition to the cast. It's like he's always been there.

Agreed. Stephen isn't used to playing crit role style. He's very old school DND. The more he played the more he started to adapt and show his own phenomenal ability to ad lib and role play. Give Colbert a week with these guys and he would blow our socks off
Indeed. I looked at the runtime and was happy that he got to play longer this time. And then it was over in the blink of an eye. An hour more wouldn't have hurt.

@@afterthunder thank you, could you imagine if this was with any other campaign. I think C2 was hands down the best choice.
All choices would have been fine, especially seeing Colbert interact with Nott is a delight. With Vox Machina being a cartoon now it's for the best since well, in that case Stephen would be playing the only D&D character that's NOT in an animated series. On the other hand, Vox machina is all closer to the classic D&D experience perhaps that Stephen is familiar with.
Then again seeing him interact with Laudna would have been amazing too. While I like Keyleth and Beau too, Mareesha's performance of Laudna is next level.

Played a rogue as my most recent character and MAAAAAN are they fun, especially for my play style, which it is "collect as many skills as you can and be the absolute best at it and be a badass outside of combat". I would love to play an Arcane Trickster at some point :)

I absolutely love that old school energy Stephen brings to the table. Right out of the gate he's talking about Michael Moorcock and geeking out about Sting. This guy is the O-est of G's. So awesome that he gets to go back to the Tomb of Horrors and play AD&D with his high school buddies again!
I love that he is like... It doesn't make a lot of sense that they have this camp with fire and everything right outside and no one cares. That comes from old edition paranoia when you'd get killed by anything on a whim till you were level 5.

Yes! I’m so glad Colbert is back! Watching him play last time around is actually how I was first introduced to CR. Now, I’m a regular but whenever I’m trying to explain how D&D is run well to non-players, I refer them to the first rednose day video.
Matt just does a masterful job of following the rules close enough while stretching some to allow Stephen to enjoy his time and wet his appetite for more.

I tried CR a while back, and just couldn't get into it, despite playing d&d myself and liking another channel's online campaign.
Who knew I just needed Stephen to ease me into this?
Like most people, it took me a long time too, personally I found it easier to start with C2 since it actually has a proper beginning.
I had seen a couple of episodes sporadically, but watching the first red nose adventure I was hooked, and had to go back to campaign 1 and binge it all. Finally caught up to mid campaign 2 during lookdown.
Having only seen the pre-amble (so I have no clue how the actual gaming goes yet), I have to say - I mean, I love Stephen on any day. But I LOVE geeking-out Stephen! It's like he finally gets to be himself fully :D It's so lovely! Thanks for this!
A part of me really wanted Sam to scream "UNLIMITED POWER" when he attacked that first enemy.
Seeing an old school geek playing new stuff is always good, but it being Colbert made it special. Plus, the only thing I thought was lame about his previous one-shot with Mercer was that it was only the two of them, so the RP was too low. AND the CR team dusted off their Mighty Nein characters? This was nerd GOLD. A hearty thank you to everyone involved in making this!
