      there was a leak that toyota is working on a prius GRMN based on the plugin version (6.5s), which the le mans prototype seems to confirm. the crazy thing is GRMN is supposed to be even more sporty than GR. I dont think its going to be sportier than a GR yaris or corolla though
      the le mans prototype look sick IMO, a prius GRMN with 250-300 hp, eAWD, body kit, exhaust and a manual mode sounds sweet! if they did put the RAV4 prime powertrain that thing would be legit quick. RAV4 prime is 5.7s, with 900lbs/20% weight reduction and less drag it could be 4.5s, but I think its going to be just a tuned version of the 2.0l, hopefully with also a boost for the electric powertrain

      The trouble is it’s not even just the regular 1500-2000 repairs that you will need to do. With a luxury car of this age, if something major goes wrong it can cost more than the purchase price of the car. A few years ago I looked at Mercs or Beemers that were around 4-5 years old because I liked the look of them and they were still in decent condition. But I couldn’t risk the Russian roulette of getting a lemon and being bankrupted by the servicing/repair costs, so I bought a Kia Cerato GT and it’s been a great and reliable car for the last 4 years.

    • @AI-qd4vb
      @AI-qd4vb ปีที่แล้ว +31

      They are not unreliable if you maintain them... And they are not expensive to maintain either in relation to their segment. You cant expect them to cost the same as some silly toyota maintenance wise...
      Your father should have not bought one apparently since the target for these cars is not people who cares about maintenance costs. They wouldnt even give it a tought.
      My boss has a 12 years old flying spur with around 100k miles thats never left him on the road. But of course, he follows the maintenance schedules, every 5000k or 6 months, and does proper full inspections by Bentley and always replaces every bit of hardware that he is recommended to replace.
      And the experience is fantastic of course. He doesnt even need to lift a finger and gets to choose either to be personally chauffered or getting a bentayga or a continental as a replacement parked at the front of his house. Thats the bentley experience, and thats why they sell thousands of them even though the low level populace thinks of them as unreliable.
      In fact, I dont even think they want those cars to be reliable when driven on a budget. They wont make money out of poor people driving them and Im not even sure they want poor (or lets say average) people to drive them. It devaluates the brand and its exclusivity. Its easier to sell these cars to vain millionaires with promises of exclusivity and uniqueness.

      Motorcycles may be more efficient because of the weight, but there's still aerodynamics. Cars were originally designed like a horse carriage with a motor, then moved on, while motorcycles and bicycles are still stuck with the horse riding design. • @quillmaurer6563

      I've similarly thought there ought to be a game-show-like challenge "will it daily," where the hosts challenge each other to daily fairly absurd vehicles for a week, the only rule being that it must be street legal. Even just a lot of the stuff they've reviewed on the show, like the Ukranian off-road machine, Jay Leno's 100-year-old electric car, this Bentley (with everything breaking), and so on. It sort of feels like the Top Gear hosts ending up in some rather absurd vehicles for their road trip challenges, the most recent one being a great example, especially Captain Slow in the Crosley and "Titties 'n Beer". This would all be rather silly rather than serious, a low-budget-daily challenge could be interesting. Though I get the sense other car channels that focus on "what is the most reliable, best value car you can buy for $XXX" would probably address that better.

    Fun to pitch vastly different cars against each other. For a while I was worried they'd go with their silly comparisons and ignore reality of the expensive broken stuff, but at the end they came to their senses. The Bentley might be the better car to drive on the weekends, certainly the better car to show off, but the Prius is the better car to own, live with, put gas in, and maintain/fix. Though I admit I've personally gone the other way, I sold the 2007 Prius in favor of dailying my classic Beetle. But the Beetle is a lot more practical than a Bentley (window regulator doesn't cost $1,300, and it doesn't even have power steering to break), while the Prius had over 300k miles on it and I worried was a financial time bomb if the traction battery went out versus the Beetle I can fix everything on myself and parts are cheap. Plus, having both, I found that I usually drove the Beetle and left the Prius in the driveway or offered it as the family loaner car.

    • @ValleyOakPaper
      @ValleyOakPaper ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Beetle is so light that it doesn't need power steering. The drawback of the Bentley being built like a tank, is that you _need_ power steering.

    • @quillmaurer6563
      @quillmaurer6563 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ValleyOakPaper Yeah, parking that thing without power steering sounds like a royal pain. The Bug I've never felt like I needed it unless the tie rods were worn out or tires low, but as long as everything is in working order I've never felt it lacking. The good part of that is that I never have had a problem with the power steering and never will. Same goes for the radiator, cylinder head gasket, window switches or wiring, brake booster, power locks, water pump, catalytic converter, or a long list of other systems. Can say the same about the A/C, but in this scorching summer I'm sort of wishing I did have that. I've also never had the check engine light come on (though weird noises, misfiring, or lack of power have served the same function). While many think I'm crazy to daily that thing, the more time that goes on the more I realize it's actually extremely practical. Tonight a friend was complaining about struggles with getting her car fixed by a dealer, she envied that I could just fix everything myself.

      @@ValleyOakPaper Yes, I've seen people with Bugs rig up both aftermarket kits and some have even managed to make the factory-option A/C (rare but it existed) work. Those wouldn't work on mine as I have a turbo setup that would be in the way of how they are set up. There are electric ones I've read about, but I don't know how good they are. To do that I'd probably need to upgrade the alternator, possibly even rig up my own using the guts of a higher-rated modern car alternator in the Bug's housing. It's a struggle on the Bug though, as it puts a significant extra load on the not very powerful engine, and does so during the hot weather when the engine is already struggling with heat. But eventually it might be necessary, with record-breaking heat waves every year. I've certainly noticed it being more unpleasant over the years, probably both because it's getting hotter and I'm getting older and thus less tolerant of it.

      Unfortunately americans really dont buy small cars in high enough numbers to justify developing them. 70% of cars sold in 2022 in the USA were trucks/suvs. There's a very stupid reason for this and it has to do with "light truck" exemptions in regards to federal regulations. If a manufacturer can get a car designated as a light truck then it can skirt a bunch of safety/mileage requirements which means it's cheaper to buy. This has lead to americans overwhelmingly buying trucks/SUVs which are horrible for the environment and cost a ton of to maintain.
      Manufacturers are pulling small vehicles out of many markets. Like Ford recently ditched the Fiesta because it's sales weren't high enough to justify refreshing the model and they already have the Focus. Other small cars, like Fiat and whatnot, have abysmal sales figures in the US.
      For places like the US, where nearly all vehicles are massive, it creates a fast race to the bottom where people don't feel safe driving a small vehicle because you have Cletus in his Ford Fuck-450 tailgating you and Karen with her 3 kids in their Yukon swerving around the lanes cuz she's on her cell phone. Also everyone's headlights blind small vehicles.

A car against a car? Same thing. And not everyone wants bige cars. If you notice there's many small cars on the roads. And the reason they are older is due to how expensive they are becoming. Vehicles have become inexpensive. No one can afford them anymore. With this, and the only option is to really by a SUV is another reason for them being so popular. Companies have forced this so they make more money. It's easier to see SUVs because they prove sedans about the same even tho they are nowhere near equal in price. There's a lot wrong with the auto market in this country. And the mentality is also messed up and backwards. Also proves no one cares about the public Transit system even tho it's needed.

    How about a few more tests? Like comfort, materials feel, prestige, ability to have the top down, speed, noise levels at speed, how nice the carpets are, which one smells less like plastic and how about which one depreciates more over the next five years - remembering that Bentley would have been worth the same money for at least that long already.
    The prius is going to get better mileage and need less repairs but its also nowhere near as nice to be in or drive unless you're on a track.
    You got those faults that quick because someone obviously covered them up to sell it. They do break but not at the rate of twice per day. There is probably more hidden in there somewhere but for the extra depreciation on the prius you could get a warranty.
    Then its just more fuel for a better experience.
    Oh and on the parking test - 18 inches from the kerb here would get you a ticket so the prius didn't park itself - it just got somewhere near.
    As for the "tech" - most of that like the camera mirror and so on is stuff you can get really cheaply if you want to add it. You don't need it on a car like the Bentley but you do if you have a car so compromised by aerodynamics to save a few cents that it looks like a suppository.
    Now lets see what you can get out of that Bentley with some power thrown at it...

    The new prius is pretty good power wise, they used to cop a lot of flak for being so slow when the first prius was made, where the new one is as fast as an Australian 5.7 litre v8 SS Commodore that came out the same time as the original Prius and was known for being decently fast here. Of course 0-60 speeds have improved a lot over the years but 7 seconds ain't that bad for a car that's primary focus is economy, I wouldn't mind one.
