I've been through the death of an 11 year old son, the loss of my wife to cancer and then to top it off, a flood that destroyed all of me and my children's physical ties to the past. I wouldn't say any of it is worse than the desperation of a parent going to bed wondering how they are going to provide for their child the next day or a child's desperation from being bullied at school and feeling there is no way out. I've listened to the song, probably, too many times since my wife's death. The music and lyrics capture the emotions I have felt and continue to feel. We were together from the ages 11 and 12 and she passed at age 55 in 2015 and I cannot tell you the blackness that envelopes you when the person who was most present in your life, who you literally grew up with and was always there suddenly is gone... well it took 20 months total but believe me the last 30 min were sudden and the moment I felt her missing from the universe was instant and violent. I feel every word of this song and death is certainly not my enemy but I personally don't believe anyone has the right to say "I am in such misery that I will take my life and pass my pain onto those who care about me". Anyway believe me there are many people out there who hear this song and feel connected to it.
Weird to think a song about suicide could save someone's life. It has mine. Still does from time to time. This is the song that built Metallica a home in my heart.
I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 51 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...
I love how you both react, Lex is a rocker chick but, Brad you give it time to really add. I find that part awesome. Both of you are great personalities, even though sometimes differ. I'M 43, and too see a younger generation seeing the worth of these songs is awesome. Thank you for not letting these treasures fade into the abyss.
And one of the reasons Metal heads are some of the most likely to seek help for mental illness. Its not as much a taboo for us. Harvard I believe did a study
This song has saved me many times. It's Dark but real, it always made feel like I'm not alone and the way Metallica builds you up by the end of the song your blood is flowing and your pumped. And out of that dark cloud. They way Lex reacted to the guitar solo made me choke up . I love to see people experience what I got to experience most my life. And new people appreciating the true talent of this band. I'm going to give you another band and song that Metallica looked up to. And it's the band Deep Purple song is Child in time.
Metal is easily the most relatable genre of music. Everyone can find a message that speaks to them. Would love to see Lex get her face melted by Korn's cover of Metallica's One. They did it on an episode of MTV Icons.
Country music is also relatable if you see past the stereotype of what country music is. Same goes for any other genre, some relate better to NWA, but if you get past the stereotype it's relatable. Ice Cube had it so right in his press conference, they were just reporting on a reality main stream wanted to ignore.
Lex is on point! Not all depression is something that happened to you personally. You can see sadness in lots of things if you let your mind go there. I view life as a gift. We are miracles. Humans are 1 in a number we can't even count.
I've lost 4 family members to suicide. Metallica was the first band I heard singing about it in clear terms.. made a big impact on me as a young kid figuring it all out.
Omg, Such an Amazing Beautiful deep song. I cry everytime because it was my best friends song, He passed away 😢💔 It's deep, Beautiful & it will definitely make you feel for people whom are depressed or suicidal 💔 RIP Bobby❤
Understand that music can tell a story and create a mood along with (or even without) lyrics. The choice to use acoustic guitars were to help create that mood of dark sadness and helplessness. It implies that the protagonist is frail and falling apart. And of course the heavier electric parts represent the anger: “why do I feel this way?” “Why can’t I get out of this?” “I need help and no one is listening” The fact that the chorus has no lyrics is also very effective. It’s internal, the protagonist isn’t outwardly expressing with words how far gone he is. And of course the outro with the fade out during the solo says it all: he’s finally made the choice to end it all. He’s free.
This is The first song my guitar teacher taught me when I was 12 and I just got in this music thang and I love this album. Now that I'm 40 and see you guys checking. out all the music I've listened to for years has made me so thank full for your channel. Thanks Brad and Lex. For being amazing.

Guys, it's time ! Gojira - Flying Whales, the Gift of Guilt, Silvera, Vacuity ! You won't regret, I promise :D one if not the best metal band out there right now
GOJIRA!! Definitely a great recommendation. I'll buck the trend though and say that I prefer the studio versions over the live recordings - Live music is great when you're THERE, otherwise I think the studio version is the far better introduction to a song.
Yooo right out the gate!! (Lex): "I wanna be EXPLOSIVE, ya know I wanna feel my spine from my head to my toes!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 girl your spine don't go that far down lmao!
Her smile when she gets into Kirk's solos (and James' to an extent) just lights me up inside. Stay happy! What a great band. Great song. Great video. Thank you for sharing!
This song meant a lot to me during my depressed teenage years. I really like the transition of the soft acoustic to the heavy guitars, it represents to me the sadness and self hatred that comes with depression. The end solo to me also represented someone at their final moments before they commit to ending themselves. It's a very powerful song.
"Wanna be lit from my spine to my toes"... metalheads everywhere feel you. This song was the 4th on the album, from back before you could click through them. You've gotta hit the first four tracks in order: Fight Fire With Fire, Ride the Lightning, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and then you're ready for the intro that you said was just OK.
I am one of those people who's happy meter is generally pegged to 100, but a huge empathetic response made me feel that this song expressed the pain of so many people in the world. Be kind and love those around you as the world is a very tough place for so many.
I like you guys, you're cute together. I suspect Brad is an engineer of some kind. No idea what Lex does, but you were born to be a metal head. Brad--your description of going high and going low and coming back to baseline, that is essentially Bipolar disorder. I have it. A lot of Metallica songs are about addiction, loss of control, and a messed up childhood. That's because James had a messed up childhood, has struggled with alcoholism most of his adult life, and suffered from depression because of it. Keep in mind this song came out in 1984. I saw a commenter below mention something about the lack of a solo. The last few minutes of the song are a solo, ranked the 24th best guitar solo EVER by Guitar World.
The engineer guess seems good. Brad's analytical to Lex's emotional: while listening, he seems to like to think deeply about the songs, and she likes to experience them deeply.
By far the most intelligent reactions I've seen in the handful of y'all's videos I've caught. Actually, for me, the solo at the beginning is Kirk's best with Sanitarium's intro close behind. They aren't for noodleheads (those into fast tapping that sounds like "noodlenoodlenoodlenoodle"), but there is a raw emotion that makes them perfect for that one singular song. Sanitarium has an abrasiveness and unhinged feel, and this one just oozes sorrow.
Everyone's been through dark times. Everyone's darkness is different. I've been a metal head since I was around 8 years old and Metallica was my intro to metal. Metallica and metal have helped me deal with so much bad crap in my life. I don't know where I would be without this music.
Yes when it comes to Metallica there songs 🎵 and solos and with the drums and vocals bass 🔊 all massive guitar 🎸 that is a true master piece 👏 to make it rain 🌧 the energy and power 🔋 into these songs 🎵 those melodies are the best 👌 and the bass 🔊 solos are really good
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs. Such amazing melody, so many changes, it just hits me, every single time. Sometimes even if you're sad and listen to a sad song it can still build you up... maybe because you know someone else can relate.
I've heard countless people say this song prevented their suicides because they realized they weren't alone reaching that dark place. And I agree about intellect being a two-sided gift. Stupid people rarely have a "dark night of the soul" or a spiritual crossroads.
Ok Brad quit being mean and let Lex watch Stevie Ray Vaughan "Live" Texas Flood. This is the best guitar player never born. None can top him playing the blues. Just ask your subs.
My favorites are SRV, EVH, and Carlos Santana.... love plenty of others... actually consider some overall maybe better than Carlos and EVH in technique. But, their actual soul was shared with their guitars. Eddie came up with some crazy techniques... and Carlos, seems to almost melt into his guitar. Hendrix was good, but I don't consider him the best like some lists do. I think a lot of lists are built out of respect of the guitarist, more than his/her ability. Lita Ford was no joke on the guitar, but doesn't really get a lot of credit. I think Slash is extremely underrated as well... Clapton is definitely way up the list as well... The more I think of it... can there really be a list? Hard to compare genres of music, with a players actual ability.Because some of the music is so different. I tried playing guitar a few times... I just have massive respect for the talent needed to play it like some of these guys. Metal... without a doubt in my mind, and this isn't like a bandwagon jumper... Dimebag was literally fucking insane. That dude was pretty wasted when I saw Pantera in concert, and holy fuck man... He was simply amazing.
Yes. Lemme rephrase: Hell Yes. She may not be ready for his depth of shred though. Texas blues is next level compared to most mainstream metal sounds, and SRV shares the throne with Hendrix. She may not be ready. Perhaps some Dragonforce to prep her.
I agree that SRV is one badass blues man but.. I would also say B.B King.. Just listen to "All Over Again", "3 O'clock Blues" or "Blues Boy's Tune".. He can make you feel with 3 notes. Now, I know SRV has a few soulful tunes but he's mostly an animal of the shred variety lol. Also, let's not forget Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix said in an interview that Rory is (he was still alive then) the best guitarist in the world. I'd love to see them react to some sweet blues though and then maybe get them into the old stuff like Son House, Skip James Blind Willie Johnson and Robert Johnson ;)
This song has helped so many of us metal heads cope with so many dark times - the feeling that someone out there understands and feels it too. Misery loves company. Fade To Black is widely regarded among Metallica's best songs - like top 5 by so many. Brad is spot on with the lyrics - many metal songs have very deep lyrics, like rap, it's meant to make you think. Lex's smile during that outro-solo, could light up a whole arena. To appease Lex's need to bounce off the walls, i will steer you to some of Metallica's others: Creeping Death, Battery, Blackened, Fuel, Disposable Heroes, Dyer's Eve
Always good to remember just how young these guys were when this record was released.. Its incredible to think Cliff was the oldest at 22 then kirk 21 then James and Lars at 20.. Second album deep.. Damn!! wtf have I done with my life.. 😂🤷♂️
I've never been seriously depressed in my life, but this is still one of my favorite songs. The music is amazing. I can empathize with the lyrics even though I've never experienced it. The music helps to elicit that empathy.
I'll use Evanescence's 'My Immortal' as an example (if you haven't heard it I highly suggest it for Amy Lee's voice). I've been fortunate enough so far to not have lost anyone close to me, so it's hard for me to personally relate to the song, but I absolutely love it regardless. If I can feel the emotion in a song, even if I can't relate, or if it helps me understand someone else's experience better, I love it and will listen to it.
Brad, I very much appreciate you feelings. I'm glad and so impressed with your understanding of relativity and self control. I'm here with your as a fan.
I would definately recommend Slipknot - Sic (Download 2009 Concert) for that explosive feeling Lex needs :) to be honest any song from London 2002 and Download 2009 concerts
You’re a very lucky man, Brad. I’ve watched several of your guys’ videos now and the way she gazes over at you so regularly…there’s love in those eyes.
Tragic fact: James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) of Metallica was playing 'Fade to black' in a 1992 concert in Montreal when a stage pyro nearly killed him when it went off under him... he suffered major burns and had to be rushed to a hospital (Metallica's set was cancelled that night) Guns N' Roses went on after them, and they stopped playing after a short set... the stadium audience rioted and trashed the venue. Hetfield was treated & released - he couldn't play guitar for awhile, so they had a guest guitarist while he sang at the next show.

I been watching yous for about a month and became my favorite reactors and love y'all as ppl ,yous can react differently but love the music and give each other different perspective...love it... Most, if not all of Metallica's song spoke to me when I was growing up. Metallica was a local band, so they have a place in my life. They feel like family
Really good conversation toward the end of this song. Metal had helped me through a lot of these types of thoughts & emotions by just experiencing the feelings through the music. Eventually as i got older i came to a place where I'm just happy i exist & can experience all life has to offer , good & bad
When I was younger this was one of my least favorite Metallica songs because that beginning section is so tedious and just seems to drone on and on. Then I got a little older and I started to appreciate the second half more... then I realized you can't have a second half without that first half, just like we can't appreciate the good without the bad. And I was still older before I understood the true brilliance of the song IS the tedium of the first half. Depression IS tedious. Sometimes it's not about the crushing sorrow but the crushing boredom, apathy, and numbness.
There's no telling how many youngsters this song helped through their depression. I know I was one of them.

@Lex
Pantera - “I’m Broken” is a very lit song. Gauranteed to take care of all that bottled up energy you have!
Yes please!
I second that 100%! Pantera in general if you're looking for that high energy stuff.
Fade to Black is an Anthem for many people who defeated depression!
Love how Brad analyzes the lyrics & Lex feels the music-great reactions bc Metallica hits both spots!
"Fucking Hostile" from Pantera is a must!!
YES!!!!
🤘🤘🤘
HELL YES
This song saved my life when I was a teenager many times I thought I was the only kid that felt this way Metallica rules
Very Cool!! Your perception..
You share that with a lot of people. This song expresses those heavy emotions, and listeners release those tensions during the song. Its beautiful.
Metal is easily the most relatable genre of music. Everyone can find a message that speaks to them.
Would love to see Lex get her face melted by Korn's cover of Metallica's One. They did it on an episode of MTV Icons.
The only thing about it is It's too short
@@metalmellie4371 True. They had to shorten the song for TV
Country music is also relatable if you see past the stereotype of what country music is. Same goes for any other genre, some relate better to NWA, but if you get past the stereotype it's relatable. Ice Cube had it so right in his press conference, they were just reporting on a reality main stream wanted to ignore.
Watching Lex smile getting bigger and bigger as the solo goes was great. Good reaction.
Lex is on point! Not all depression is something that happened to you personally. You can see sadness in lots of things if you let your mind go there. I view life as a gift. We are miracles. Humans are 1 in a number we can't even count.
What a great world it would be if people cared for each other like you both do ! Listen to each other it matters !
I've lost 4 family members to suicide. Metallica was the first band I heard singing about it in clear terms.. made a big impact on me as a young kid figuring it all out.
Hugs :)
It’s all about the guitar, their lead guitarist is so awesome!
Kirk Hammett? Their rhythm guitarist/vocalist’s name is James Hetfield
There is a video of some teenage boys, playing this song at a high school talent show. They rock it.
the cargo short boys
Omg, Such an Amazing Beautiful deep song. I cry everytime because it was my best friends song, He passed away 😢💔 It's deep, Beautiful & it will definitely make you feel for people whom are depressed or suicidal 💔 RIP Bobby❤
Understand that music can tell a story and create a mood along with (or even without) lyrics. The choice to use acoustic guitars were to help create that mood of dark sadness and helplessness. It implies that the protagonist is frail and falling apart. And of course the heavier electric parts represent the anger: “why do I feel this way?” “Why can’t I get out of this?” “I need help and no one is listening”
The fact that the chorus has no lyrics is also very effective. It’s internal, the protagonist isn’t outwardly expressing with words how far gone he is. And of course the outro with the fade out during the solo says it all: he’s finally made the choice to end it all. He’s free.
I describe that intro as beautiful. This is definitely a classic and a masterpiece.
This song is a perfect example of why you should be nice to people because you never know what someone is going through.
You guys are definitely the two deepest of the reaction folks out there. In my opinion...
This is
The first song my guitar teacher taught me when I was 12 and I just got in this music thang and I love this album.
Now that I'm 40 and see you guys checking. out all the music I've listened to for years has made me so thank full for your channel.
Thanks Brad and Lex. For being amazing.
I love how guitar solos put a smile on Lex's face👍😃
I'm an old veteran with PTSD. been in this darkness too many times. Thanks for reviewing it. You guys get the meaning of these songs so much better than some other reviewers. Thank-you. Keep up the good work!
Guys, it's time !
Gojira - Flying Whales, the Gift of Guilt, Silvera, Vacuity !
You won't regret, I promise :D one if not the best metal band out there right now
Where dragons dwell, the live version of course ;)
OMG YES!!
Gojira is my favorite
@@christopherlynn1064 Probably almost all of their live catalog is better than studio version haha
GOJIRA!! Definitely a great recommendation. I'll buck the trend though and say that I prefer the studio versions over the live recordings - Live music is great when you're THERE, otherwise I think the studio version is the far better introduction to a song.
@@somniumrabidum absolutely agree!
Yooo right out the gate!! (Lex): "I wanna be EXPLOSIVE, ya know I wanna feel my spine from my head to my toes!!!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 girl your spine don't go that far down lmao!
sounds like just a new turn of phrase for a transformative state of mind, language changes
we need a Dyers Eve reaction!! lol
This song STILL is getting me through some dark hard times. ❤ you guys.
Her smile when she gets into Kirk's solos (and James' to an extent) just lights me up inside. Stay happy! What a great band. Great song. Great video. Thank you for sharing!
You can always tell a new metalhead, just look at when the guitar grabs lex by her soul and takes her on a ride.
Yes, it's a whole album experience
One of greatest songs of all time. I used to listen it every morning when I was getting ready for work. And you can't change it , it is perfect.
I am one of those people who's happy meter is generally pegged to 100, but a huge empathetic response made me feel that this song expressed the pain of so many people in the world. Be kind and love those around you as the world is a very tough place for so many.
Dark stuff is made for those who feel alone to suddenly feel as if others are with them...sharing pain....diluting it with the sharing.
@@brad_wilson so that would make Brad a Capricorn and Lex a Cancer lol
One of the most stunning pieces of music ever written that’s helped so many through dark times. Lyrically and musically stunning
All I could think about after you said "Dr. Lex here " is Lex saying "I got a fever and the only prescription....is more 🎸 "
I love your Metallica reactions... best reaction on the tube!
Everyone's been through dark times. Everyone's darkness is different. I've been a metal head since I was around 8 years old and Metallica was my intro to metal. Metallica and metal have helped me deal with so much bad crap in my life. I don't know where I would be without this music.
This song will always make me cry. For so many reasons. By far one of the best songs ever made. Hands down.
Yes when it comes to Metallica there songs 🎵 and solos and with the drums and vocals bass 🔊 all massive guitar 🎸 that is a true master piece 👏 to make it rain 🌧 the energy and power 🔋 into these songs 🎵 those melodies are the best 👌 and the bass 🔊 solos are really good
this is a song that for most , takes you on a emotional journey.complete with arguably the most emotional solo and relatable lyrics ever put on tape.
I’m a simple man. I see Brad and Lex, I click like.
It definitely prevented my suicide
Brad's explanation of always coming back to that baseline really struck a cord with me. Makes a lot of sense
James wrote this after a bunch of the bands gear was stolen, including James favorite Marshall amp
that James's mom bought him before she died I believe
@@kenssd yup
This is one of Metallica's best songs period. The softer sound just fits with this song so well.
This song got me thru some really heavy shit in my mid 20s
This song changed my life. That guitar solo is just mesmerising. My favourite song by far.
Ok Brad quit being mean and let Lex watch Stevie Ray Vaughan "Live" Texas Flood. This is the best guitar player never born. None can top him playing the blues. Just ask your subs.
I have to agree....SRV is the GOAT
I've been waiting for some Stevie Ray ever since they discovered top tier guitar. SRV is a beast
I have never seen such joy at the end of this song. Great reaction!
Lex needs fast pace metal. I suggest, Battery, Dyers eve or Damage Inc. (all Metallica).
This song saved my life, I was in a very dark place in my early years. Listen to the lyrics it’s a deeply important message about suicide.
This song always gives me chills up and down my spine. “I was me but now he’s gone” always gets me
I haven't listened to much of Metallica but I remember hearing this song and thinking it's pretty deep lol.
Most of there early music at least their first four albums are extremely deep. Dealing with addiction and Mental health.
Never tired hearing this song. It sings to my soul every time. Glad you liked it!
Pantera”Cowboys From Hell” that will get Lex’s Spine Tingling‼️💯🔥🤘🏼
This song composition is classic and perfected...you can't help but to hear it all
The acoustic with the electric... goosebumps
This song, And Megadeth "In my darkest hour"...got me through some real shit. Maybe check out that song also
Also Suicidal Tendencies.. How will I laugh tomorrow
Tragic fact: James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) of Metallica was playing 'Fade to black' in a 1992 concert in Montreal when a stage pyro nearly killed him when it went off under him... he suffered major burns and had to be rushed to a hospital (Metallica's set was cancelled that night)
Guns N' Roses went on after them, and they stopped playing after a short set... the stadium audience rioted and trashed the venue. Hetfield was treated & released - he couldn't play guitar for awhile, so they had a guest guitarist while he sang at the next show.
This was when I lost any respect I had for GNR.
I love the diversity and open minds yous keep when exploring music you haven't heard and end up loving it. I been watching yous for about a month and became my favorite reactors and love y'all as ppl ,yous can react differently but love the music and give each other different perspective...love it...
Also King 810 is a awesome band with alot of diversity in there music, they range from metal, rap, blues, and classical aspects depending on what song... their albums are all one thing ,
thank you for being the ppl you are love y'all🥰
Pantera - 5 Minutes Alone
Or I'm broken
Or drag the waters
Or This Love
Ooh Drag the Waters. Majorly underrated
Regular People
Definitely 'This Love'!
Most, if not all of Metallica's song spoke to me when I was growing up. Metallica was a local band, so they have a place in my life. They feel like family
This is one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Probably Mwtallica's best song.
Sometimes it's not about the crushing sorrow but the crushing boredom, apathy, and numbness.
mettalica has a great way of doing that with their music, taking you on a journey with the tone of the song, like a story within a story.
