Genuinely surprised Andrew had never heard this before. That said, props for digging in now. If you’re fortunate Nick will be in with you for the long term.
I was first introduced to Nick Drake by a friend of mine years ago who had a compilation called ‘Heaven in a Wild Flower’. I immediately went and bought all three albums after hearing it. Some of the best music I’m lucky enough to own.
Pink Moon is one of those albums where I just have to listen to the whole thing. Kind of strange to listen to one song at a time but certainly great as well. You do pick up on the different themes when you listen to it as a whole. Plus, it's a bit difficult to handle the weight of some of these songs when you can't balance it off with some hopefull beauty with "From the Morning" which probably spends the most time as my "favorite" Nick Drake song. Some of his recorded stuff after this album is really great as well. Especially "Black Dog" which is... "Bergman-esque" in it's haunting starkness. Nightmare fuel...
The piano on “Pink Moon” has often given me the same feeling as Robert Wyatt’s piano on 1/1 from Ambient 1…..and I have no idea why. It just creates a similar mood within me. The only answer that I have is that it is not always the amount, speed or complexity of notes. The key thing is the right notes.
I think one element of Nick Drake's appeal which keeps me coming back are his playful, light, jazzy vocals, never overwrought, but serving the words and the melody. You can hear that in Pink Moon, where there is a little playfulness as he brings the words 'Pink Moon' right down into a lower register. Elton John covered several Nick Drake songs early in his career in an effort to sell Nick Drake to the US as a songwriter. Elton belts the songs out in his typical style and it ruins the songs for me. You can find these performances on TH-cam if you're interested to hear them for yourselves.
I don't like this kind of music much, but I must admit to being a big fan of both Nick Drake and John Martyn. These are two of the greatest musical talents these islands have ever produced. What they did to themselves is a shame but predictable. The world was never meant for the likes of either of them. You have to be insane to be seen as sane in this living nightmare of a place. Whatever I must have done to deserve being sent here, it must have been awful, and for that I can only apologize and hope to have done a better job this time around. Don't get me wrong, my life has been blessed by most peoples standards, but come on get real, it is not great, now is it? Which would not be so bad if it was not getting much worse and even more dangerous by the day.
The Beatles were at the height of their fame and popularity when Lennon wrote "Help!"; the lyrics are very disturbing. One sign of the Apocalypse is a blood moon, defo _not_ a pink one - Revelation 6:12. In the enema or The Smiths dilemma, I'm on Andy's side. When David Sanderson saw Nick Drake in reception, did he have a glass of wine in his hand?

The piano riff in pink moon is exactly when the human heart explodes with about 30 emotions simultaneously
I subscribed straight away, Fantastic stuff.
Excellent! Thanks for the sub. Perhaps check out the other Nick Drake episodes we've done if you like this.
Cheers, Jon.
"It sounds so fuckin' beautiful." Yes, Andy. Yes, it does ❤
Had to relocate my comment because I accidentally replied to one lol 😅

Hey Ian, same thing for me - it was the 'Way to Blue - An Introduction' compilation in 1994. And yes, it's right at the top for me too.
Cheers, Jon.

For me the most interesting thing about Nick Drake was his guitar tunings

Audiophiles but theme music is Elastica and not Wire 🤔
Hey Freddie, if you listen you'll find that it is both! The first 4 seconds are Three Girl Rhumba then it's Connection.
Cheers, Jon.

Pink Moon is death
