The best of the three, imo. _Bryter Layter_ is a grower that gets better with every listen.

Northern sky is one of the best songs ever. Genius.

Bryter Layter is the Nick Drake album I'll remember most, because it's the best arranged and orchestrated, and ultimately the most varied and luminous, giving it a deceptively lighter atmosphere, which is probably more to my taste!😉

All three albums spar for top position to my ears, but if pushed for a definitve listen, then 'Bryter Layter wins it by a hair's breadth!

@@Owlstretchingtime78 Not being a regular Nick Drake fan, Bryter Layter suits me better. His other two albums are more acoustic and stripped back for me, especially Pink Moon, which is really the one I like least.

@a.k.1740 The minimalist approach to sound is something that we see through different lenses. Hence your lukewarm approach to my favourite band. 😉

Maybe I missed it but I think you edited out the whole of 'Fly' which is my favourite song on the album (though the simple home demo version on the 'Time of No Reply' collection is better) You must be a city boy if you don't know what a stile is, Justin. They're everywhere in the UK countryside - dunno about the US. Generally I prefer the 'naked' guitar and voice songs of Nick Drake - the lush orchestrations are simply not required when the songs are this good.

YES! This my favourite Nick Drake album. His first album is good but a bit unsure, whereas the third album is doom and gloom.
I think he found the right balance on this, the middle album. The melodies are wonderful, his guitar picking is insane and together with the very
tasteful arrangements, the whole thing has a rather jazzy feel. "One of These Things First" in particular represents everything I want from Nick Drake.
Stellar track. Beautiful album. What a talent he was!

Nick Drake is in my musical DNA. I used to hear his music all the time at a cafe where I played my first open mic. "One of These Things First" from this album is probably still my favorite song of his. It just so happens that I met my wife at a guitar and songwriting camp in NY put on by Richard Thompson, who played guitar on this record as well as a couple tracks off of "Five Leaves Left". Funny how life works out sometimes.

    A absolute masterclass.
Listening to this album in the ghettos of Miami in the 80s as a teen gave me so much nourishment and life clues.
This album must be listened in it's entirety at least twice.
Some brilliant men were in the studio for the production of this album.
    Brilliant move absorbing it.

Hi Justin. Dave here, just back from spending Saturday In The Park, on maybe our last summer day here in London. I really enjoyed this album and your reaction. Nick Drake is a remarkable musician, who I've known and listened to much of my life. But I still probably admire him more than like him. When it comes to folk singer/songwriters, I much prefer Donovan who is an obvious influence. But Northern Sky is a fabulous song. One gripe is that some of the arrangements are just too overwhelming, as they were so often in popular music around this time (George Martin being a big exception). My favourite of his songs is River Man, with that haunting string arrangement by Harry Robinson, far from overwhelming, his only song with Nick, but who also worked with Sandy Denny.

I wouldn't say it makes the songs, although it's impact is beyond measure. This is my favourite Drake album, although 'Pink Moon' achieved as much with an acoustic guitar and eight bars of piano!

The explanation I've seen for the odd spelling of the words in the title is that it was a dig at journalists (and maybe other people) constantly asking him stupid questions about his art, often starting "why"...

Nice review Justin. I love lots of Nick Drake but also find a bit of the instrumentals too twee and very 1970s sitcom like you say. As a 1960s kid even that element takes me back to my childhood though...
