He's not layering guitars. He was just a really talented fingerpicker. This is a perfect album with so much humanity and wisdom. Please please react to Ys by Joanna Newsom if you want some more superb folk lyricism and dexterous fingerpicking (in this case plucking, as she's a harpist).

  • @relicofgold

    1) It's one guitar done live in the studio, no overdubs, recorded in 1971, 2) The album was completed over 2 days of recording, most of them in one take.

Extremely sad album considering how bad Nick Drake was mentally, he was very very ill when he made this album. I finished reading the new book about him just a week ago and I felt shocked after I finished it. He struggled immensely after 1970 until he died in 1974. I hope he is in better place now.

Such an amazing record. Would love to see a reaction to Elliott Smith's self-titled. It's one of his most stripped-back, bare albums. The guitar work and songwriting is near perfect imo. My personal favorite by him.

It's not entirely clear if he took his own life or if it was an accidental overdose. Still incredibly sad that he died so young and didn't see how popular and influential his music would become one day. RIP Nick

My favorite description of Nick Drje from the Rolling Stone Album Guide. "You can increase the volume, but Nick Drake will never be loud." He had three albums. Hus debut, Five Leaves Left, and his final album Pink Moon both got 5 stars. The middke album got 4 stars. Nick had severe mental problems that increaeed over his career and he took himself out too soon.

Judee Sill’s Heart Food, released the following year, is another killer album of the 1970s singer-songwriter "genre" - less spare, more produced than Pink Moon, but just as much of a beautiful little gut-punch.

  • @Bringadingus

This album shocked and disturbed his family when he released it, to the extent that they never were able to listen much to it. They thought it was a garish, grotesque display of his worsening mental illness, and saw in it harbingers of his impending death.

kind of in the same folksy vein, I think youve gotta get to Bob Dylan at some point. Bringing It All Back home is probably my favorite, but I think highway 61, blonde on blonde and blood on the tracks are all fine places to start

To my knowledge, the only girl he had a "crush" on was French singer and Icon Françoise Hardy whose album La Question I HIGHLY recommend, you don't need to understand french to get it. It's a mix of french chanson and bossa nova, very pure and dark in the same way. To me they go together hand in hand.
