The bassist doesn’t always “worry the frets”
Look up Andy Mendoza, he posts whole shows
Repetition repetition repetition....there yer go
Video games 79 just starting
We couldn't afford an Atari back then! My first taste was Pong round a mate's house. Then we got a Vic-20. Those Commodore games were superb. Cheers, Jon.
Holy crap dude just pull up the lyrics and read them if you can't understand listening. Lol. Would explain so much if you knew the lyrics.
I read him the lyrics and we discuss them. It’s in the episode. This is all chronicled. Thanks for commenting. - Andy
I’ve not heard this version of the song but I like it. Sandy’s voice isn’t as heartfelt as the Album version which Norfolk but it’s still great.
I was introduced to Stereolab listening to John Peel many years ago. Instant fan.
Brilliant Band with so many Fantastic Albums. The Pixies seem to be better known but Throwing Muses were head and shoulders above them.
They are a brilliant band. Can't agree with you about Pixies. Each to their own. Cheers, Jon.
When it first started thought meh, but I’m a big fan of slow build ups . It then became an ear worm. It reminded me of Foals -Spanish Sahara.
Nice tune, enjoyed the show, cheers all.
So this popped up and my first thought was, “Is this some Will Oldham (Palace Bros, Palace) recording I’ve never heard?” Obviously not. But quite nice, nonetheless. Thanks for this. On a different note (but still within viewer suggestions) Lone Justice is releasing a new/old album next month of previously unreleased songs from early on (the first single from it is a raging cover of The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks), and it occurs to me you’ve never explored the brief (2 studio albums), but stunning, work of the band and the phenomenal Maria McKee. So may I suggest you indulge, but recommend you avoid the studio recordings as they never nailed down just how vibrant they were, or the amazing presence McKee has. This live recording from 1987 of Wheels remains, 37 years hence, one of the most riveting and emotionally gut-wrenching, performances ever. You sense the audience is genuinely uncomfortable with the degree of pain and heartache conveyed and is torn between wide-eyed amazement and the urge to get her some help. I’m not being hyperbolic. Give it a try. th-cam.com/video/cqjsEsK90X4/w-d-xo.html
“Brian’s not at home, he’s at the North Pole, but if you’d like to leave a weird noise.” Brian Eno is one of those odd connections between chemistry and music, along with Alexander Borodin, Francis Poulenc, and Sir Thomas Beecham. Funky fabric - Hip hip hooray - There’s no stopping him - Rip rip away - Heaven - yes, distant now.
Great suggestion James, I picture a person spreading the ashes of a loved one at a serene lake that has gentle waves rippling toward the shore while the person still in this "hell" here ask is there anything else.
Nice... when it started I thought it was going to be something along the lines of a latter day Talk Talk number, but it morphed into a lovely bit of gradually rising indie/alt rock. Laid back but anthemic at the same time. Great suggestion James.
You lost me when you insulted John Popper by saying he has a decent voice 👎👎👎👎 he actually has a super voice...
Thanks for providing a comment and your opinion, Brian. We appreciate you and hope you have a great Friday. Take care. - Andy
Funny that Stereolab was right next to Tortoise in that 1001 albums book with the John McEntire tie-in. The next 3 Stereolab albums (Dots-Cobras-SpaceMoth) are all pretty different so it would be worthwhile to sample something from each. After that the albums have more subtle differences in overall sound. Prefer probably Chemical Chords with the Motown influences or Not Music as the flip side. Still holding out for a new album but will settle for another chance to see them live.
Do we have a new Stereolab fan? Keep sending these Jon for Andrew to react to. I love this album. This album was my first Stereolab listen and it blew my mind back in the day. I love all eras for Stereolab from the early drone-y to the later pop-y sounds. It all is so unique to the band and so interesting from a musical perspective.
You can't miss with Stereolab.
I think the original quote is 'you can't miss with Armitage Shanks'. Cheers, Jon.
The only ancient Chinese maxims I know are along the lines of - Confucius he say, man who eats carrots and peas in same dish, unhygienic; and, Confucius he say, man with organ in fireplace, making love to grate. Translations vary.
Very nice, I really enjoyed this. Very trancey, cheers all.
Thanks m'Lord. Cheers, Jon.
I don't mind a bit of country rock. As he was trying to sing like Dylan took some way into the song to realise they were British. Enjoyed that one, new band to me. Jon I remember The Subterania by Ladbroke Grove tube, no idea if its still there, but was a decent music venue. Was there a club also in Camden by that name? must have passed me by.
Fantastic live, i may add.
Assume its an anti war song.... crazy, sturdy/ brutal, a torpedo on repeat? think lyrics could have been better but loved the hypnotic layers of sound in this one. Still prefer their earlier poppier sounds tho.
Excellent stuff, hypnotic, funky and kosmische. Love the atonal organ punctuating the music. Sean O'Hagan, former member and 'friend of the band' collaborated with Mary and Laetitia from Stereolab on 'Cookie Bay' with his other band, The High Llamas, so have that for your suggestions list!
Third tine lucky? I keep getting caught by a filter. If this fails, I give up. Phone numbers in songs can be a really bad idea, read up about that Tommy Tutone song about Jenny. (Ordnance Survey grid references, e.g. SO224350, are safer.) Good tune. They may have been one of those bands with only one or two songs. According to T'Internet, Joe McAdam is now in Manchester and still playing. (In Camden Town, you can do anything you want to - Suggs, channelling his inner Chas'n'Dave.) There used to be a guard on the Euston line who would announce the destination, Wolverhampton, in what sounded like one syllable. For a top tune with Andy's favourite repeated word in the lyrics, see Mississippi.
Enjoyable song and who hasn’t heard plenty of songs like this , but the nasty guitar leads set it apart for me.
Holy crap, what a track.
Agree its very 70's American soft rock style. OK to have on in the background. Pleasant enough.
Essential listening and how I feel about the 9 to 5 crowd ;) A treasured part of my collection!
I got a very southern African feel, possibly from the ringing guitars, In the bit of the North where I come from, it's baff not bath. Rhymes with laff and caff. I think I've touted this before, but you're getting it again. Solomon Linda - Mbube.
In the jungle, the mighty jungle... Cracking stuff. Cheers, Jon.
This song was good and has a feel good factor, nice one Jon.
In all ways this song delivers. Sorry guys I couldn't help it.
You must have heard the song My Type too? equally catchy opening with the horns. I thought they were the sort of pop band that might do well, but not heard from them since this song. But then again I prefer heavier stuff so unless Radio 6 were playing it I would not have seeked them out. Nice work guys
Old school hip hop sampled this - DJ Jazzy Jeff sampled this track with he made "Rock The House" album with Will Smith aka Fresh Prince back in the last 80s. That album launched them into stardom. The track is called "Touch of Jazz" and its considered a hiphop classic with a lot of old-school hiphop DJs.
If I could point to one album that, as a musician, inspired me as much as or more than any other album, it would be the first Throwing Muses album along with the Doghouse demo of those songs
That bass line is so nice :]....Love Pixies
It's been awhile since I heard these guys. I am fan of "Benny Goodman" and "Van Horn". They are a fun bunch.
Good, catchy, upbeat number, enjoyed it, cheers all.
As a 54 year old man, somewhat set in my ways in terms of the music I listen to on a regular basis, I'm really glad I discovered you guys as I'm now listening to a lot more music that I wouldn't ordinarily have given any time to. Really liked this one - just a blast of joyful indie electropop. Keep up the good work...
Thank you so much, Ian. I think it's safe to say we both really appreciate that comment. The truth is a lot of our views are generated from people who are familiar with the song we are covering tuning in to see one of us experiencing it for the first time, and that's terrific and completely understandable. However, I really enjoy the act of discovering new music, so it's comments like yours that I find most gratifying. It speaks to the crux of why we do this--to share with others and experience for ourselves music that we haven't yet heard. Thank you again, and be well! - Andy
You think it's a simple song without the strings? Try and play it.
Simple as in straightforward and without the complexity of multiple instruments and moving parts-just beautiful guitar work. Thanks for tuning in. - Andy
You need to see the live video for this song with her in a pink catsuit banging a tambourine!
Absolute Classic. Love this epic tune. Heard it when it 1st came out in 92, still love it now in 2024 ❤. Radio 6 played it in full about 3 weeks ago. 1st time heard it all way through on the radio, not just 3 min edit.
The vid is diary of a man who died killd himself😅
I saw Sonic Youth when they first came to uk at a small club called Adam & Eves, I reckon there was no more than 30 people. Got some classic photos. Great band.
One of the best guitar solos in punk rock.... am I allowed to say that.
Good choice, Television have a great sound.
Good tune. The cadence and rhythm of the first few words reminded me of something - and when I put my finger on it there was a connection to Jon's Easter Egg, for what it's worth.
I was excited. Then I saw that you chose the album version. “Oh no!”. Then I saw that the live version seems to be off youtube now (I found it on dailymotion), but folks may enjoy Television - Foxhole (Live OGWT 1978) Put your hand up if you saw this at the time - I was 16 years old. Great, great performance. Honestly, I have always much preferred this live version. If you like things Tom Verlaine, you may want to try: Alvvays - Tom Verlaine (Live on KEXP) I have absolutely no idea if this is in your fields of interest, but I found these sessions interesting: Lol Tolhurst x Budgie - Full Performance (Live on KEXP) The Chameleons - Full Performance (Live on KEXP) Enjoy (and don’t forget “The Boy Looked at Johnny”)
My absolute favorite CC song of all time.
Very much the same. Thank you for tuning in. - Andy
