  • Its time for another TENSEGRITY VS GRAVITY challenge. My last video Tensegrity video created a helpful prototype. This time I'm going all out! Ill be building a - Gravity Defying Floating Table!
    Gone is the Nylon supports from last time. In its place 6mm STEEL chain! This should be a fun project! and hopefully it inspires you to try it for yourself.

    Tension structures are generally more stable when under tension. This design would be a rigid structure if the center links were replaced with a turnbuckle.

    • @8sirjosh
      @8sirjosh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Came here to say this too. I’m curious how much tension this design will take to fail.

    • @user-gn4bc4lv3l
      @user-gn4bc4lv3l 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Word, he should be using u-bolts drilled through the frame on at least the center chain so he can add tension. He could then toss those ugly and expensive locking links and flat plates.
      The whole thing would “float” better.
      Totally stealing it though.
      Really cool idea.

    Interesting concept. If the chains on the sides were diagonal, you would achieve cross bracing (triangulation) and the table would be rock solid. Then you could likely get away with a single turn buckle (or some other length adjustment device) in the middle supporting the vertical load. Since the whole structure would be in tension at that point, it would also be silent and rock solid.

    • @Familytreewoodworks
      @Familytreewoodworks 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been looking into doing a tensegrity table and was thinking the same thing. Or having more than one diagonal chain in the middle would do the trick as well. I’d like to do a large dinner table, but wobble would be a deal breaker.

    Something that might help with projects, sand and stain at the very end. Since you just used screws to hold everything down, should be pretty simple to do. I know the stain usually keeps the glue from adhering long term. I will say i love the chains man. Nice industrial touch on it.

    Just a thought, to add tension. Instead of using this screw down hooks, on the under side of the upper support, add a recess and drill though and use a eye bolt, which would be plenty to add tension, and not change the look too much

    • @DandyLionCreations
      @DandyLionCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's a great idea! I definetley need to try a few ways to add the tension. I'll either try a recess or add a turnbuckle to the centre support.

      Well...
      Your supports for the center chain were done wrong... i made a table similar like this of my own design (no video) but think about the bottom frame with the upside down V, that supports the weight of the table top, for much more strength and stability you should cut the tops of each side that upside V with a level line, and the the small board holding the chain could have set across and on 'top' of those 2 angle support boards, now you would have the strength of the whole wooden board pulling down on the supports (instead on relying on the screws put in the sides of that board...)
      You do the other one the same way and it's equaly as strong...
      I can turn my table over and it's just as strong, oh weigh 240 and can sit on it... mine is more like a stool...
      Also, you need a way to tension the 4 outside chains for stability...
      I will make you a video tomorrow...
      I like your video style...!!!
      THIMBS UP...!!!

      Dandy Lion Creations cheers mate. I think the math might melt my brain. Would you suggest making a smaller model like you did first?

    • @DandyLionCreations
      @DandyLionCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@o.g.bwoodwork it would all depend on how rusty your Pythagoras is. There are alot easier designs than the one I went for. I made the model just so I could get my head around the theory. If you get that just go for it!
