Just want to add that the Corolla is in it's last year before a redesign, the 2024 will be the year to buy the Corolla! The Kia Niro was just redesigned, 2023 model is great and offer way more room inside; add to that the more upscale inside finish and looks the NIRO is the number one in that list for me, specially if you need a new car right now. Thanks -- Your video has helped me decide which Crossover to choose; I like the Toyota Corolla Cross; my daughter drives a Subaru Crosstrack and loves it... I was considering a Kona, but instead I will purchase a brand-new Toyota Cross Hybrid AWD... hopefully prices will come down very soon or become reasonable for the product between now and 2025. Currently I drive a 1998 Toyota Camry-LE with 225K miles, which has become boring after 25 years, but continues to run fairly well. Originally, I planned to drive my old Camry until it reached 300K miles, but I'm ready to jump-ship and buy new after 25 years. So, either in year 2023-2024-2025 models of which I plan to purchase... unsure which year depending on price the economy recession and waiting timeframe. I appreciate your videos thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge.

Depending on car segment, it is not always a Toyota/Lexus the champion. Sometimes may be a Mazda, a Suzuki, a Honda etc.

I need to correct you on the Corolla Cross. It does not use a "standard" AWD system. It uses the same E-AWD system that is found in both the Prius and Corolla. The difference being that a "standard" AWD system has direct physical connection from the motor in the front, to the rear wheels. The Toyota E-AWD uses a completely separate electric motor for the rear wheels that only kicks in when the system detects loss of traction on the front wheels, or in off the line acceleration.
I also need to correct you on the engine that it's in the Prius. The 2023 Prius does not use the same engine as the Corolla and Corolla Cross. Toyota upgraded the Prius to a 2.0l engine to increase power and fuel economy. The Corolla and Corolla Cross continue to use the previous generation of Prius drivetrain with the 1.8l engine, but with a new (for 2023) and more powerful electric motor and battery. This increased the power in the Corolla Hybrid at the loss of a few MPG. Other than this misinformation in your video it was a good summary and comparison of the cars.
The gasoline engine does less work for a hybrid, so hopefully will be more reliable. A friend at work recently traded in a regular Hyundai Tucson earlier than usual, because it was losing too much engine oil and the dealership shop was stalling to fix it under warranty, hoping to force him to pay for it later. I recommend changing the engine oil every 4 thousand miles with a full synthetic if it is a vehicle known for reliability problems, and every 5 thousand miles for vehicles known for more reliability. I like to read the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine at a library, about reliability and owners satisfaction. They make educated guesses about reliability, based on history and over 300 thousand owners surveys every year. Car & Driver does not guess at all, just focusing on how they drive, and any problems during their long term testing.

well if you think you will get one any time soon you are dreaming. Toyota hybrids are 1 to 2 year waits in a lot of markets. Other brands are still 6 months to a year

Another good list. Can't really fault the Toyota's - they're really the only manufacturer that has a long track record of building reliable hybrids. The only caveat is that most people don't consider the math when it comes to hybrids; they're only worth the extra cost if you do an enormous amount of in-city driving every year, and plan to get rid of the car before the battery ever becomes an issue.
not true, the price difference from hybrid and the same non hybrids models is miniscule. Look at the Lexus NX....its basically the same price. Hybrids , no alternator, no starter, no serpentine belt and the brakes last 3x as long. Batteries last 15 years without any noticeable mpge loss. And they don't cost a mythical 10g like you believe. There are Prius on the road with 300 000 miles with their original battery. Gas isn't going to get any cheaper..especially in places like Canada..you will be taxed to death...I'll take 5.7l/ 100km over 8.5lper /100kms any day
@@mikej238 Not sure what prices you're looking at - difference with NX models for normal vs. hybrid are about 3 grand. And I never said anything about 10g replacement costs at all. Your other statements are only partially true depending on the make of the hybrid as companies use different methods for making them. My point, which you seemed to completely miss, is that hybrids DO save you money, just with certain conditions and criteria. A person has to evaluate how they drive and work the math to see if they come out ahead or not.
@@Dakiraun wrong...check the price of the NX . Depending on trim level some non hybrid ones are actually MORE expensive. The NX350H is the best value and top selling model.
Rav 4....43% of them sold last year were hybrid. I think simple math is beyond your capability. 40% saving in gas pays for itself very fast even if you only drive 1000 miles a month.
@@mikej238I did check - you don't seem to understand that they have a non-hybrid and hybrid version of each trim level. Yeah, sure the hybrid less-fancy trim is cheaper than the fancy non-hybrid trim, but if you compare the prices of going from non-hybrid to hybrid with the fancy trim levels, it's a $3K step for each. You don't get things for free dude.
@@Dakiraun bs check starting prices. What you get in the base 350H over the base 250 is night and day. Don't know if you are in US or Canada. In Canada 250 starts at...52 000 including delivery, 350H 54400 including delivery....2400 bucks for almost double the fuel economy and 36 more HP..2400 CDN is only..1800 USD. You would be an idiot to buy a 250. ..nobody does...except people like you.

I am 40 and have been driving a manual transmission since I was 15. Covid-19 ruined manufacturing and I pretty much have no more options, so for the past year and a half, right when I paid off my current car, a 2016 Ford Focus Sedan (manual transmission), I have been focusing on a hybrid. It is a little bit beyond my budget, but I really think within a year I will buy a Prius-the most basic model. The Prius looks like an angry car-I love the size and the design is really cool.
I have a 2016 prius I bought from a co-worker who was relocating back to S. Korea. I've never considered a hybrid and only bought it because he was moving. Now I want to get rid of my other car and get another hybrid. the savings on gas is well worth it to me. Takes getting used to not having power to change lanes, get on the freeway etc.

The Corolla Hybrid is such an indisputable winner in this battle. The downside for me is its looks, but that's just a personal opinion. If this car was "prettier" or more appealing it would be a no brainer. I would probably extend my dollar for a Prius.

Is Toyotas hybrid warranty only time based or is it also bound by mileage. Seems like there were key details missed throughout.
Is the 194hp engine in rhe Cross Hybrid the exact same engine that comes with the Prius? I know the Corolla Hybrid engine does not come with that much horse power. My worry is that the Cross Hybrid engine is not a time-tested engine?

I guess the big question is availability. When will these cars be readily available? Also, what's the timeframe for ordering one of these cars?
If you want a Hybrid or PHEV in 2023, you'll probably have to do what everyone else does... order one and wait a few months (to a year). I ordered a Tucson Hybrid last summer and it finally came in December (5 months later)... but the upside is I got exactly what I wanted in color, interior, features, etc, without getting stuck with a color or feature I didn't want because it was all they had on the lot. Sometimes ordering is just better. Only time it isn't is if you need a car TODAY... if you can wait a few months, just order exactly what you want.

This is a reasonable list. I have a Honda fit with 254K on the odo. It has been a joy to own but I’m ready for some new tech after 16 years. I’m looking for a new car now, one that will hopefully last me another ten years, 100K.
The Corolla looks ugly to me, much worse than the Prius IMO. I test drove the Niros and those are great vehicles, I just worry about reliability (maybe the EV less so).
I think the Prius is the winner for me on this list, or the cross for more utility.

I think you can no longer recommend any Hyundai/Kia until they prove that they are serious about fixing the issues with engine fires/trailer hitch fires/dual clutch transmission failures. The fact that it's been four years running and the issues are showing up even in brand new units is a huge red flag.

I think you can no longer comment on videos about Hyundai/Kia until you actually do some research and join the rest of us here in 2023 instead of living on rumors from 10 years ago. What do you consider being "serious" about engine fires? Maybe, stop producing that engine (2.4L Theta... CHECK)... maybe stop putting it in vehicles (CHECK)... maybe make completely different engines that have had no problems for multiple years and use those instead (CHECK)... maybe watch some reviews from, oh, I dunno, scores of sites that all say Hyundai and Kia have completely turned everything around and are now putting out some of the best vehicles out there.
Or are you just going to sit in a cave, not learn anything and pretend that companies never get better (or worse) and realize that Toyota used to make junk cars that everyone hated and they were a laughing stock, but got better... oh, and speaking of Toyota, when are you going to get serious about ACTUAL CURRENT RECALLS ON ENGINES like Toyota currently recalling CURRENT Rav4's for engine cracks and problems? Have you owned one? what research do you have to back up your claim that the 1.6L turbo which is in most of their hybrid cars has been subjected to fires?

The corolla cross hybrid uses the 2.0 hybrid engine from the new Prius. And should get way over 40 mpg. The 38 mpg rating I think is an understatement. The corolla sedan hybrid is the only one that used the 1.8 hybrid engine.

I had to wait 5 months for mine... but good things are worth waiting for instead of rushing out, buying an ICE vehicle with the wrong color and/or features just because it was the only thing available on the dealer lot. Unless it's an emergency, waiting can be worth it to get exactly what you want.

Too bad they’re no longer cheap when all the dealers have $4k-$5k in additional dealer “options”.
Hybrids are fine if you drive to work DAILY but if you only drive on weekends it could be problematic because the battery just sits there for a week. I’m concerned that manufacturers are abandoning ICE only versions of their models like Toyota.
