It was clearly built as a Golf R and A35 rival. BMW made a commercial decision. They felt that it would sell better, has more interior space than the previous F20 'clown shoe' model. Everyone knows the F20 is a more fun car and more unique. This F40 on the other hand is more practical with a much more spacious interior, better on fuel, lower taxation etc. There is no contest between the B48 engine/Aisin auto/front drive bias and the N55/B58/ZF rear drive bias combo. The old drivetrain pummels it in every way. Unfortunately BMW don't care.
All the keyboard warriors and B58 fanboys buy that car second hand and they are in minority but made their voices heard the most. BMW DO CARE about its real customers, the 1st hand buyer, buying from a BMW AD, those are the ones paying the bills, and THOSE PEOPLE WHO DO MATTER, they wanted this car and that’s why they got it! BMW do not sells hundreds of thousands of M135i. They sell lots of 118i and 118d. So BMW built this design for those people. That dictated the transverse engine and front wheel drive to give more space over the F20. This body is then handed over to the M division and they have to make what they are given work. That's how you end up with this, the F40 M135i with the mediocre drivetrain. The people that wanted an M performance car did not really want this car and prefer the F20 version. That you should understand. At least the M240i still exists.

I have a stock 120i F40 m sport pro and I've chased down M135 F20 on winding roads. The chassis of the F40 is so much better than the F20, it's ridiculous
I actually liked this generation alot. Comfortable 1 series with a little more room than the previous and the best interior and iDrive BMW offered. The f70 just brings a shame to BMW. Ditched the angel lights for a straight bar, ditched the nice kidney shape for a wierd kia looking grille, and something I take very personal, the removal of the gear shifter like in almost all other BMW models.
Totally agree. The removal of the shifter is ridiculous especially. I've seen a lot of M340i owners retrofit the old centre console into the new ones that have the lady shaver shift tab.

Decat 4 cylinders always sound like absolute crap, just go with a 200 cell downpipe, as Max said and this thing will sound alright and will still be reasonably loud, why do you have to decat it?!
Because I'm doing a turbo upgrade on the car and the car will benefit more with a decat while using ethanol + turbo upgrade. The car is currently stock again but I'm planning on buying a sound suppressor for the car

I have a Z4 20i (g29/2019) with a stage 1 ecu and gearbox and it’s pushing 316hp and 460nm. Done over 10,000 miles no issues and the car is lively and drives amazing! So B48 it’s a very nice platform :)

Had this car for 4y and now just changed for the Rs3 8y , another league. However the BMW was faultless, quite quick and very confortable and in full black looked good I think as that grill gets blended in.. throttle response at the very low was good (quite the only advantage I see vs my now current rs3 😅)

My personal opinion on the F40 is that it isn’t bad, just that the F20 was/is such a good car… Also the F20 is pretty much a small 3 series, while the F40 is pretty much a Volkswagen Golf made by BMW or a BMW badge Mini. The 2 series grand coupe on the other hand, terrible, straight up terrible. Drove one and it was an absolute joke, the car was stiff (not that comfortable), the steering made the car feel very FWD in a playful way, until I threw it into a corner where it instantly became completely numb and heavy. Uncomfortable, unrefined, while being completely numb.. and that ladies and gentlemen is how you make a BMW that gets out cornered by then 10 year old Volvo V50. To be absolutely clear it is not that I’m unfamiliar with FWD cars or hating on the 2 series because it is FWD, I’m use to FWD, I own and drive two FWD Volvos and they both have more communicative steering than that 2 series I drove.. and furthermore my experience with the F40 1 series and the Mini “Equivalents” is far more positive.
My daughter's '93 Mustang has that same rattly sound as this Bmer. Only reason for it is all the heat shields and baffles rusting out and hanging on by a thread.
All of you professional F1 drivers in the comments, please go buy a B58 or N55 engine car if you don't like the B48. This is the UKL platform, FWD biased with Haldex AWD and the very powerful B48. All of the manufacturers produce four cylinder engines today, why so much hate to BMW specifically? This car is very fun to drive and still faster than the 95% in German roads.

I gotta be honest, I get why 4 Cylinders need to be an option and 1-Series BMW with 4 Cylinders don't sound bad either, it just makes no sense... Mercedes has already an over the top 4 Cylinder and VW's 4 Cylinder is probably the best 4 Cylinder on the market, while the BMW B48 just... sucks. A GTi with a simple remap does 360hp and with a bigger Turbo up to 450, while you need to forge the BMW engine to even reach beyond 320hp, that's just sad. Let's not forget the A Class A45 aleady comes with up to 421hp as standard from factory with a better interior aswell, what is the point of this car without the 6 Cylinder B58?
You can't possibly generalize like this when so many B48 variants exist. Yes, the lesser ones don't hold much power at all but the one in this 135i holds 500WHP on stock internals which is very far from sucking - this variant is practically a B58 with two less cylinders. At least it doesn't sound like complete garbage like the GTI and A45 do. It certainly won't win any sound awards any time soon since it's a 4cyl, but it's respectable for what it is. Also, you're kidding yourself if you think the A-class has a better interior. That thing creaks like there's no tomorrow, and this is coming from someone who was in the market for one so I actually like that car.

For anyone hating the car, it’s the future mate, this gives a gap for new models in a future that they can tune (future M140/ 1M) also it’s more reliable this motor in terms of tuning and petrol. Love de B58/s58, N54/N55, but this is what it is (an entry car for the brand) hate whenever the M5/8 get a 4 cyl
Way too loud and the decat brings out some very undesirable tones. I really have a hard time picturing buying this when the F20 exists, with a better AWD system and a B58.

@@jankohler2134this is my car, no I shipped my tcu to the company, they're the only company able to tune the Aisin gearbox and will spend time in that platform. The tcu is basically located under the air intake so its quite easy to remove.

Some of the best sounding 4cyls have more engine noise and intake noise than exhaust. If you get rid of the ppf and cat put a nice muffler on it...

For anyone hating the car, it’s the future mate, this gives a gap for new models in a future that they can tune (future M140/ 1M) also it’s more reliable this motor in terms of tuning and petrol. Love de B58/s58, N54/N55, but this is what it is (an entry car for the brand) hate whenever the M5/8 get a 4 cyl
B58 will never return to 1 series lineup that’s done
Way too loud and the decat brings out some very undesirable tones.
I really have a hard time picturing buying this when the F20 exists, with a better AWD system and a B58.

@@bradofwar5960 I've driven an m340i and i couldn't care less about an m140i tbh. I also prefer a better interior and a more comfortable care, your m140i handles like shit and is expensive to run in the eu. Your drive train doenst mean jackshit if you get outcornered by a f40 any time .

I just don’t get why you would buy this over a M140i F20. Just buy the F20. Cheaper and then you’ll save money for upgrades.
I got stage 2+ m140i with LSD fitted and xhp3 gearbox high pressure fuel pump just under 500bhp and 650NM it would beat this 2.0 in reverse

@@HiddeT99 you can get relatively cheap now around 18-20k for a good specced one, I bought mine in 2021 for around 22k best bang for the buck, so cheap to tune.

How can ppl buy that car? Go for the m140 f20 not f40. Same with the c43 and c63 4cylinder. Its a downgrade, atleast between the f20 and f40.
because people don't generally buy older models when they can afford the newer model, it's kind of common sense
@@bsdpowa I could afford both. But the F40 is a downgrade to the m140. So I don't get that. Then I would save up some more money and buy an upgrade like an RS3 or something similar. There are still some decent Driverfocust cars out there new. But this is not a real m135i. It should be called m130i.
@@hettmannsperger42 I didn't make the car, I'm just saying people will always buy the newer model if they can afford it, whether it's a car, smartphone, TV... it's just how we all are, new is new, I'd rather have the new C63 2.0l than the old 6.3l one from 20y ago, it's really a no brainer, they made the 1 series like that because majority who bought it didn't know or didn't care about any of the stuff that people argue about in comments, I'm looking to buy one myself and I'm coming from 11 BMWs, last one F30 320xd, I absolutely hated this 1 series when it was released, didn't want to hear about it or look at it on the road because it was an insult to me as a long-term BMW driver, but here I am after all these years looking to buy one, I want something small and cheap(ish) and don't really care about the pedigree, it's a 1 series, it never was a "real" BMW anyway and I had an F21 but I wouldn't buy it now because it's just old, old shape, old parts, old interior, higher mileage etc.
Quite simple, better handling better interior, more tech more spacious etc, the awd compared to your xdrive is very negligible considering the timings I make 0 100, so basically your only reason is the 6 cils like everybody is crying about.

Did 0-100 3.97 on 380hp and and 510 nm torque. That's a45s territory with less hp ;)

The car is stock really fcking slow 100-200, and the 4 cylinder is crap- speaking about tuning, if u tune the b58 its Lamborghini territory. What u saying makes no sense to me. For me those are shit reasons to buy the newer 1 series, not Worth it. Also look up the m140s on the market, in Europe they hold there value pretty stable last year's until now, a used m140 is almost the same the m135f40. The m140 will be a future classic and a legend.

I have an m140i, and find the move to 4 cylinders for this model a disappointment. It reminds me of the bad old Max Power days of the 1990's.

5 years on and the M140 fan boys are still crying. FFS get over it. 4 cylinders are not genuine M’s. Funny that . The original and some say best M3 is a 4 cylinder.

I’ve one of these M135’s and on any road other than a motorway it’s way quicker A to B than a 140.
Then the fan boys will insist on spending 1000’s to try and improve the handling of a 140.
I say , just buy a better car. If you want a great sounding 6 cylinder in a BMW the only choice is an S54.
If you only want to go fast in a straight line or impress young girls at any drive through or B&Q car park with single wheel burn outs then the M140 is the car for you.
Why are people buying this garbage?? If people actually protested the brands that don't produce what customers want, maybe OEMs will be forced to comply like Mercedes did with the V8

For me ils not a BMW engine, this 4 cyl is not able to tune. The hard tune is not possible and this isnt the bmw Spirit.

I don‘t necessarily disagree with you but this came out before the 4 cylinder C63. Also, they have to adhere to very strict fleet emission targets.

@@jankohler2134this is my car, no I shipped my tcu to the company, they're the only company able to tune the Aisin gearbox and will spend time in that platform.
The tcu is basically located under the air intake so its quite easy to remove.
