    Fun fact - The Prime Minister in 1910 when the film is set was Herbert Asquith, whose great grand-daughter is Helena Bonham-Carter.

    I got to see Mary Poppins on Broadway and it was the most fun I think I've ever had at a show! Burt was on wires dancing upside down on the ceiling, Mary Poppins flew out into the audience and waved at us on the balcony, it was nuts!

    Fun fact, just because I think you guys, Andrew in particular, will appreciate it, it is often considered and pretty much confirmed that Julie Andrew's won best actress for this role because many bon the voting panel were upset that she was not cast as Eliza in the movie version of My Fair Lady so it was a way from them to spite the casting choice.

    "Practically a prostate exam" - or as I immediately thought "Practically prostate in every way".
    Edit: Mary is basically Alyssa Edwards when it comes to mirrors.
    While we're on the subject, I'd love to see Violet Chachki in a version of her 'chalk world' outfit.

    • @LauraleeandaukuleleBlogspot

    PL Travers was SUCH an interesting woman, and the oddball things that remain in Mary Poppins, I believe, are the core ideas that she held. She was so spiritual (in a very turn-of-the-century-crackpot way), from almost unbelievable poverty, then saved by an extraordinarily strict aunt she adored, was in a long-term same-sex relationship, then fell for her spiritual guide, had a son she adopted and then promptly ignored....definitely read the biographies you can on her. So odd.
    Also, "I Dream of Jeannie" at the beginning reminds me of the time I was at a conference for Godiva (I ran a store) in a fabulous hotel in Florida, and Larry Hagman was there, and he was drunk off his nut and fell over a lawn chair and had to be picked up by the staff.

    I was in musical theater for a hot minute as a kid. I loved doing Mary Poppins so much. I got to sing supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as a 6 year old. I remember going home and practicing THE SHIT out of that word. It was the most important thing in my life at the time. This is so nostalgic for me.

  • @gregburns5638
    @gregburns5638 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Julie Andrews husband, Tony (?), was invited by Walt Disney to be the set and costume designer. The carousel horses had faces that resembled their human riders. Especially look at "Bert's" and "Mary's" mares. But as you so deftly pointed out, "Michael's"...YEE GODS!!! When both Audrey Hepburn AND Julie Andrews were up for the SAME "Best Actress" "Oscar", and Julie deservedly won, her acceptance speech was a HOOT! She wanted to thank "the one man who made this all possible...JACK WARNER..." The audience absolutely HOWLED with laughter, especially when the TV camera zoomed in on him blushing!!! 😄 Touche!!! 👍 😉😘😉😘😉😘

  • @JesseGallaghers
    @JesseGallaghers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Julie Andrews only won an Oscarfor MARY POPPINS, but many believe it was a consolation prize for not getting MY FAIR LADY (the scandal of Audrey Hepburn lip syncing was also seen as a push for her winning since Jack Warner actively passed over her for not being a big star). Andrews would store her Oscar in her attic for many years because she felt she didn’t really deserve it.

    This movie always makes me think of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, except in that one they were like "Dick, don't worry about an accent just do you." And then presumably he was like "won't it be weird that my children and father are all EXTREMELY British?," and they were like "I SAID DO YOU!!!!"

I am just as conflicted about the new mary Poppins as Andrew is (even I actually do like Lin-Manuel miranda) but maybe I'll be surprised. Also I forgot about the staircase too, so I am right there with you, avaryl!

    Dick Van Dyke is a TREASURE and we stan. I loved this movie as a child, but I was definitely more of a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang kid, and I definitely blended "Step In Time" with the "Me Old Bamboo" scene from CCBB in my head growing up.
    Also, did you see Dick putting Piers Morgan in his place two weeks ago on twitter????
    Also also, Avaryl's just reminded me it's time for my bi-annual (twice yearly) rewatching of the entire BBC Pride and Prejudice, so I'm off to watch completely wordless tension and brilliant acting for a hot minute.
    FABULOUS REVIEW AS ALWAY!!!

    Miss Piggy being on Fabulous Cunt Island makes me really happy. She is EVERYTHING. I still remember her spread in InStyle Magazine and how much it made me laugh (but also made me realize that she deserves more recognition as a style icon). Also, her interview with InStyle about her style secrets is incredible 😂

    I think mid-century movies had an abundance of turn of the century movies, cuz that's when the writers and producers were kids. Hello Dolly, Music Man, my fair lady, pollyanna, cheaper by the dozen, etc. Also maybe the studios used the same sets and costumes.

    This movie was my childhood, I never fell asleep during the entire movie when I was young because I loved every minute of it, however, being grown up now, I'm able 2 properly appreciate each and every song for its message, this is still my favorite movie and whenever I think of Julie Andrews, I always imagine Mary Poppins. Thank you for reviewing this movie

  • @andygirl444
    @andygirl444 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Quick story. I come from a very musical family. Once, my parents, sister and I were watching Mary Poppins while we waited for other family to arrive for Christmas. My brother and his family started caroling outside the house when they arrived but we couldn't hear them because we were singing "Let's Go Fly a Kite" at the TOP of our lungs along with the movie. They eventually gave up and came inside to find us lustily singing, "UP through the ATmosphere! UP where the AIR is CLEAR!" I should add that this was just a couple years ago and I am 38. So.... yeah.

    I don’t know if it’s just because I’m a 2000 baby, but I’m really excited for Mary Poppins Returns. I watched the original Mary Poppins and Sound of Music like every day when I was younger (my grandmother has an amazing taste in musicals), and even though Julie Andrews isn’t in this, Emily Blunt looks so good as Mary Poppins? Her voice, her mannerisms, they remind me of how Julie performed as Mary and it makes my heart so happy. And even Lin Manuel, I’m excited to see what he brings too, especially with Hamilton and all that.
    I went into a rant, but this review made me so happy. When I saw the notification, I had to stop everything and watch this 😭💕

    So, I read the books (all 6 of them) as a young kid before I ever got to watch the movie. Most of the questions you have are answered completely by the books- so I am wandering if the movie wasn't designed as a "companion", with the full assumption that everyone watching it would know the book lore.

    Twice, in the past several years, Julie Andrews and her lovely adult daughter, have appeared here in Fairfield, Connecticut for a book signing. They were only supposed to be there from 6 until 8pm, but there was such a crowd, they remained until almost 10:30pm!!! I was among like the last 20 fans in line, when someone remembered it was her birthday that day. So we all serenaded her, and she cried happy tears... 😊

    Hopefully you guys watch/review "Enchanted" at some point, because the OG chimney sweep dancers from "Mary Poppins" appear during a live action musical scene AND THEY STILL STEP IN TIME. 💖

    Fair warning: the marvelous MovieBitches spend so much time complaining about the length of Mary Poppins that their _review_ of Mary Poppins is 56 minutes long. I need a spoonful of rum punch.

    Island for fictional characters: The Cunts of Themyscira
    You can put Robin Wright's character from Wonder Woman there.

      Haha, Themyscira was the inspiration for FCI in the first place, so how would that work?

    My favorite part about this video was your attempt at quoting the movie in your British accents, haha.
    Also, I looooove Pride and Prejudice! Is there a review on that??

      I also like how you put Miss Piggy on Fabulous Cunt Island and then asked if you could open it up to fictional characters....
