    I don’t disagree with any of your criticisms, but man do I love this movie. It’s my go to guilty pleasure film. I was hoping you’d talk about how ridiculous The Winner Takes It All was for conservatively 20 minutes!
    (I’m from the UK - apparently Brits really do just love this film)

    I love this film, but two things: A, I am English & B, I have never seen it sober. I will now make sure to always watch it drunk, so as to not ruin it. Also, the woman who produced it did the Spice Girls musical, and that was one hot mess. And not in a good way.

    I thought this was a really interesting perspective on the film. As a British person I think we 'got' it more because we have the cultural tradition of pantomine, all our lives we have to sit through very very poor productions of fairy tales at Christmas time with bad acting, bad singing, bad costumes, bad sets etc, everyone already knows the story, the audience are shouting out things to the actors. Mamma Mia is kind of like a filmed pantomine in that way and I think, possibly due to not knowing any better, us Brits loved it because we're comfortable enjoying something mediocre like this if everyone on stage is having a laugh and if the music is loud enough. Love you, Movie Bitches, you truly do the lord's work.

  • @D3z1n3r

  • @kajakkille
    @kajakkille 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Thank god I’m not the only one who hated Meryl’s acting ... I was invited by my cousin at the cinema and I had to sit through the whole movie...
    It was torture except for Christine Barinski
    Now I can’t wait for your take on Mama Mia the sequel..

  • @hexmaniacciaran
    @hexmaniacciaran 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    agreed, if you're going to make movie musicals get actors who are legit singers or dub that shit. Also Michelle did the modern version of Hairspray which you guys should also review

    P.P.S. I'm so happy we share a love for Christine Baranski. She was just fabulous in THE GRINCH!

  • @gabriellaberman
    @gabriellaberman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had the most fabulous experience in Santorini where they played Mamma Mia! at an outdoor cinema. The best part was not the view of Greece right next to me, but taking off my headphones to hear everyone around me singing Dancing Queen really quietly with their headphones on. I swear I’ve never had to contain my laughter so intensely in my life

  • @MeganSin
    @MeganSin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Also can we just quickly discuss that cher is only 4 yrs older than Meryl and they have her playing her mother?! Is it more fab, sure. But also infuriating, I certainly think so. It should be like...Betty white or even better carol Channing! Something more realistic.

    • @DendyJungle
      @DendyJungle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      msinarath yeah I've gotten used to this bullshit from Hollywood. Like Steve carrel was twice Anne hathaways age in get smart.
      Dave duchovneys "mom" in x files is only 5 years older
      Michael fassbender is only ten years older than his "son" evan Peters in x men

    • @MeganSin
      @MeganSin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Between this and my other big Hollywood pet peeve, whitewashing (and as an Asian American, this is a big problem I take issue with) Hollywood needs to get more real

    • @sophiaako7663
      @sophiaako7663 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It contributes to the expectation that 85+ year old women are expected to look not only 15+ years younger, but the same age as their on-screen daughters. "Cher is timeless" isn't a sufficient excuse for clearly not wanting to show elderly women on the screen

    Just started watching, but I hope that you comment on Christine Baranski because not only is she a goddess and can high kick like no other. Is she on Fabulous Cunt Island? Please?
    The same with Julie Walters who also deserves a spot on Fabulous Cunt Island, lounging around by a pool and enjoying life.

      Finished watching, and thank God for Christine because she's the one and true savior of this film. Honestly, just search for Christine's "Does Your Mother Know" scene online and then just listen (don't watch it, just listen to it) and you'll be good.

    In the actual musical the Greek peasants are supposed to act as a literal ‘Greek chorus’. Which works on stage, but was done poorly in the movie.

  • @LifesNeverHumDrum
    @LifesNeverHumDrum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I watched the movie last night, since I needed to experience it for myself. Your descriptions of the film were far more intriguing than any trailers, and I'm a sucker for schlocky so-bad-it's-good flicks. And oh boy this movie sure was a wild time, y'all were dead on about it.
    Watching the movie felt like having a psychotic break for 2hrs straight. 2hrs that felt like 6hrs. 2-6hrs of hysteria, fear, nausea, and more nausea. It almost felt like the movie itself was in various state of inebriation for the first hour and a half, and then hungover in the last stretch. Hell, even Meryl Streep seemed either high or exhausted the whole time, in her performance. The hyperactive cinematography was so overwhelming that, at one point, I actually screamed "just put the camera down!!" while nearly in exasperated, motion-sick tears.
    It has the opposite of the problem Xanadu had, where they didn't cover anything; they filmed most scenes from one flat wide angle, or at most 2 angles for dialogue framing, and it was visually boring. It was a movie filmed as a stage play. Meanwhile, Mamma Mia has waaaay too much coverage, and it feels like nothing was cutting room floored, except maybe any downtime that should be present to establish cross-shot continuity (I'm halfway convinced this actually takes place in the Bermuda triangle with how much teleporting happens,) or allow your eyes to adjust to new information. It's a play filmed like a movie. A movie on serious uppers.
    The relationship between mother and daughter feels inauthentic, probably because most of their emotional scenes happen in muted dialogue with music blasting over them. The relationship between soon-to-be-marrieds feels inauthentic because they have about 10 minutes of screentime together up until the wedding.
    The music is terribly integrated - all but about 3 or 4 tracks actually startled me with how abruptly they start, and how bad it sounds. Most musical numbers appear to have the same blocking as a play, but lack the spotlight/blackout/separation of sets/etc required to isolate the character who is, essentially, singing a soliloquy. The ONLY good piece of actual choreo is the Flipper Boys - and god bless them, they were the only part of the film that made me genuinly happy, and not laughing-as-a-fear-response. Although I did enjoy the "this could be cut as a horror movie" vibes of the Man After Midnight scene.
    There's more to say, but honestly, It was an incredible experience. I HIGHLY recommend watching it for yourself...but not if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or need to operate heavy machinery. And maybe avoid if imbibing psychadelics, as it was already like being on a trip that I desperately wanted to come down from.

    I went and saw this with my mum because I grew up listening to her Abba records and it was just so very upsetting. I feel like a lot of the choreography was also pulled straight from the stage version where you have to make a lot of big gestures. Please picture me flinging my arms around as I said the previous sentence.

      Miss Sweet Nothings It works on stage because there’s more of an accepted suspension of disbelief of people randomly bursting into song and dance too.

  • @stranr06

    When I 1st saw this movie in theatres on my Birthday. I brought my parents to it. The theater was jam packed with Gay Men and Post Menopausal Women in their 60s. They were all empowered and dancing in the doorway. The audience members were the best part of that experience.
    My Dad LEFT the movie during the Chiquita crying toilet number. He ended up retreating to a local Barnes & Noble and read a few Italian based mystery novels for the rest of the weekend.
    My Mom braved it out with me, but when the film was over all she could say was: "Wow. That was sort of wild... Like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but not as funny, or good...."
    It was the most uncomfortable, awkward musical movie/birthday ever.

    I grew up watching so many Bollywood movies (with silly/unnecessary musical numbers) so I guess that’s why the music didn’t really annoy me... that said this movie is a COMPLETE MESS

    THANK YOU! I have always felt guilty to hate this movie. Well, hate is a strong word, but its just better to watch you guys talk about it than actually watch it once again lol

    I have wonderful and fun memories associated with this movie (it was the first movie I ever saw in theatres) so I love it on nostalgia factor and pure camp (also Julie Walters and Christine). BUT I can objectively acknowledge that it is a hot stupid mess. And the stage show was better.

    If I ever need to laugh I will play this review !!! Mute brought tears! I remember watching this movie for the first ( and only) time and thinking it had to be one of the worst movies ever made....except Christine of course, love you two!

    This is a movie that Meryl got trapped in. It should have been Bette Midler

    John Waters made the good decision when he did Crybaby as a musical and dubbed in the voices of people who could sing. (Also, hint-hint - Crybaby would be so fun to review.) I always wondered how Johnny Depp actually sounded when he sang, and when Sweeney Todd came out, I was disappointed. lol I love Johnny Depp for a lot of things, but he's not much of a singer.

    You guys aren’t giving Emmy Rossum enough acting credit, she’s really good x I’ve heard her sing in an IG post x surprisingly she’s really great. Overall I hate this show x the movie equally but great review as always guys!

    They should have gotten Timothy Dalton, Bill Pullman and Hugh Laurie/Stephan Fry (Wooster and Jeeves!!!) as the Dads; Megan Mullally to replace Julie Walters and Emma Thompson as Donna. If they made it a period piece like in the 80's, I think it would have worked.

    I choked every time there was a Pierce Brosnan singing clip. Also recently watched the sequel and again Christine Baranski was doing the MOST and Cher was INCREDIBLE!

    I am so glad that you came so hard for the TERRIBLE FILMMAKING/CINEMATOGRAPHY. There are few films I've seen where the technical failures are so blatant and egregious. Mother of CHRIST.
