I didn't catch that until the very last person listed in the rolling credits at the end of the film. One of the best physical makeup effects/combined with a really good performance completely transformed Dick Van Dyke into the 90 year old Senior Mr. Dawes.

There is another movie that Disney made shortly after this called "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" that is often overlooked as a cash in on Mary Poppins. It has many of the same creators, similar music, characters and even actors. It is set in the 1940s England. It's worth watching.

What I love most is that Dick Van Dyke, who had no formal dance training at all - is now currently 98 years old and is STILL dancing like this. Also, mentioning his physical comedy, you might have seen the slightest glimpse of it before; in WandaVision, the 50's episode was heavily based on the Dick Van Dyke Show, which was one of Wanda's favourites.
Loved this reaction as usual! If you're looking for something in a similar vein, check out Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson (Mr. Banks). It's an underrated and often forgotten about classic, especially with the younger generations, but it's wonderful, the same kind of magic as Mary Poppins creates in a way.
Dick Van Dyke voiced Bert.
He is also a massive Halloweeen nut. Loves decorating his house and is always trying to find animations and things to terrify the kids. He's just a completely wholesome guy and extremely talented.
Looks like she's already seen it, but I would also recommend Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to anyone who loved this one. More of Van Dyke being terrifically himself, and just WAY too many absolutely wonderful characters to mention. The Childcatcher, the Baron and Baroness, Grandpa, the Toymaker, the utterly fantastically ridiculous spies... and written by IAN GODDAMN FLEMING, author of the Bond novels. Such a fun and bizarre story, and - to me at least - definitely comparable in tone to Bedknobs & Broomsticks.
In the new Mary Poppins movie he still plays the banker! Only now he is actually as old lmao! Only he is still doing the crazy stunts and dancing, at 90+ years old. The man is a legend!
Fun fact the part where they are in the chalk paintings was not green screen but was in fact a Yellow Screen or The Sodium vapour process used by Disney with a specially coated prism in an old three-strip Technicolor camera. That was how they managed to get such a clean combination of the live action and the animation.
Fun fact: Feed the Birds was Walt Disney's favorite song. Julie won an Oscar for this role. Also, it's cheerful in the first half to let our guard down for Mr. Banks redemption. So good.
Saving Mr. Banks, is a good companion movie to watch next.

Mary Poppins is an angel, a witch, a Time Lord. Who knows. She's supernatural, she's wonderful, and she's most of all motivational and inspirational. To me, she's a force of nature.
And according to Neil Gaiman, literally exists separately from God's creation to the point of being a little intimidated by her. 😂

Some trivia: When making plans to make Mary Poppins, Walt Disney really wanted Julie Andrews for the part after seeing her in "Camelot" on Broadway. When she mentioned she was pregnant, he offered to wait until she had her baby to start filming and offered her then-husband, Tony Walton, the job of designing costumes and some sets for this movie.
Also the song “Feed the Birds” was Walt’s favorite song to the point where if he ever visited the music studio and said “play it” everyone would know what song he was referring to.
And this song was emotionally moved to the author of Mary Poppins. That author was a spit fired! Watch Mr. BANKS WITH TOM HANKS & U WILL UNDERSTAND. One year later after this movie was made, Walt Disney passed away. And then in the 70s, the character who played Michael, he passed away in the 70s. He was about 21 and died for water poison in India

Glynnis is also amazing in "The Court Jester." Also stars Danny Kaye, Angela Lansbury, and Basil Rathbone!! HILARIOUS and adventurous movie with an all-star cast!
You MUST react to this film. Hilarious. Sadly Glynis and Angela were the last two surviving credited actors from it (unsurprising, as they were most likely the youngest of the main cast), both no longer with us now.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is another Dick Van Dyke musicals that is one of my favorites!! He goes hard with physical comedy and his dancing is phenomenal!! I absolutely suggest it.
Plus Mary Poppins the sequel is really good... Emily Blunt does a really decent job at Mary's part, and it features Lin Manuel Miranda and a cameo by Dick Van Dyke 😊

Years ago I used to date a girl whose cat was named Kitty Kitty Bang Bang
..and it has one of the scariest characters in a children's film!
The original Jane also has a cameo in the sequel, she asks where another house on Cherry Tree lane is and when she gets the reply, she says, "Many thanks", and Mary Poppins replies, "Sincerely", throwing back to the kids letter
I never saw Chitty up until my sister put it on a few months ago. Personally, I don't care for musicals, so I tuned in and out up until I found out her last name wasn't "Truly". I was so baffled that anyone would name their daughter "Truly Scrumptious" that I just kept watching. Once the tide rolled in, I just started asking so many questions (in a teasing fun way) and my sister just said "Yeah, and we're not even at the child kidnapping part yet", to which my response was "THE FUCKING WHAT??!?". Fully invested. And then came the ending. I was PISSED. But less in a "this is awful" way and more in a "what the fuck!?" way.
You should definitely watch “Saving Mr. Banks.” It’s based on Walt Disney trying to get P. L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, to let the Disney Studio make Mary Poppins. She was against it being a musical, but Walt wore her down to do the movie. Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney and Emma Thompson plays P. L. Travers.
That movie changed a LOT from reality, but is still quite fascinating.

Sadly P.L. Travers was also very much against any animation in Mary Poppins. Even during the after premiere party, Travers tried to convince Walt to take the animation segment out. Walt explained the movie was done. During that time movies were left untouched after their premiere. Though Saving Mr Banks gives a very different story as to what happened, they do play the real life recording of Travers in Pre Production during the end credits.
I remember Julie said that Travers said "She had the nose to play Mary Poppins" ... rude

She's the Nanny version of a guardian angel, a fairy godmother, and a Goddess. She's never entirely defined--but she's honored among those of heaven and earth.
And a good witch. In the books she turns her fingers into sugar and snaps them off and gives them to the children to eat.
A unique theory was floating around here on TH-cam that Mary Poppins comes from the same universe as Pennywise the clown. Pennywise feeds off fear while Mary Poppins feeds off happiness.

The Feed the Birds song always made me cry, especially since I caught on to the idea that by buying seed to feed the birds, you are also feeding the poor woman selling the seeds.

Another great Disney Musical from this era to watch is Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson (the father) from this film.
A lot of fun facts for this film:
1. Many of the "women" who wait outside to apply for the nanny position are actually men because they couldn’t find enough ugly women.
2. In the animation sequence people like the songwriters, Julie Andrews and multiple others do voices and David Tomlinson voiced Mary Poppins Parrot umbrella at the end.
3. The choreographers Marx Beraux and Dee Dee Wood would go on to do the choreography for many other classic musicals including: The Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Slipper and the Rose.
4. The woman who played the Bird Woman is legendary Actress Jane Darwell who starred in over 100 films and at the time she had been retired, but Walt Disney convinced her to be in the film and personally sent a car to pick her up everyday and treated her like Royalty. This was her last film before her death and she said how wonderful it was especially the way Walt was for her.
5. Besides being Bert in the film Dick Van Dyke as Mr Dawes Sr when he would be dressed up in all that makeup he would troll the backlot tours by making them think it was an old man and cross in front of them as slowly as possible then right as they were about to pull away he would sprint off as quickly as possible! Julie Andrews was hoping to be in the film version of My Fair Lady which she started on broadway, but Warner Brothers wanted someone who was actually a star as Julie had not been in a film yet so they went with Audrey Hepburn. However the story doesn’t end there as Julie Andrews was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy opposite Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady and she won and in her acceptance speech she ended it with “Finally my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and made this all possible in the first place Mr Jack Warner.” and everyone lost it including Mr Warner. Then at the Academy Awards this film was nominated for 13 Oscars and won for:
Best Actress,
Best Song for Chim Chim Cheree,
Best Original Score,
Best Visual Effects,
and Best Film Editing. It was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Scoring Treatment, and Sound unfortunately losing many of those to My Fair Lady.
7. Ed Wynn (Uncle Albert) was the Mad Hatter Walt always wanted to have him in something he appeared in several other Disney films including: The Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and Babes in Toyland.
8. When they were in the early development stages of the film Walt gave his songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman a copy of the book to read of what they thought would be good material for the film and they underlined six chapters in red crayon and when they went in to see Walt they handed him the book and he chuckled because in his copy of the book he had underlined the exact same six chapters in red crayon as well.
9. The inspiration for the song “A Spoonful of Sugar came with Richard Sherman’s son came home from school and he asked what had happened to learn he had been given the polio vaccine to which his dad asked if it hurt and he explained no they put the medicine on a sugar cube on a spoon and we swallowed it. A literal spoonful of sugar helped the medicine go down.
10. When the brothers were playing songs for Walt one day a couple hours they thought would work for the film at the end he asked them to play that bird woman song again to which Walt walked over to the window saying “That’s what it’s all about isn’t it?” Referring to the theme of the film. It was Walt’s favorite song the studio ever made and every Friday Walt would meet with the brother and just talk about things going on at the studio and other projects and at the end of their meeting he would always ask them to play the song by saying “Play it” and when they finished it he would send them off saying “Have a good weekend boys.”

Even after Walt’s death Richard Sherman would still go into Walt’s office on a Friday afternoon and play the song and on what would have been Walt’s 100th Birthday he went the celebration when the dedication of the Partners statue was unveiled and played the song saying it was only for Walt at the end of the song he blew a kiss to the statue said Happy Birthday and walked off, but he was told later on that when he was nearing the end of the song out of the clear blue sky a single bird came down near the piano and off back into the sky.

13. The old woman that children encountered when they run away from the bank is the actress who voiced Cruella De Vil in “101 Dalmatians”.
14. P.L. Travers who was the original author of the Mary Poppins books had refused Walt Disney’s offers to make it into a film for over 20 years and so in the late 50’s he actually went to meet her in her London home hoping to use his personal charm on her and so soon after she finally gave him the rights to make the film, but during the early stages Robert Sherman who was one of the songwriters along with his brother said “She was a witch” and absolutely hated everything everyone was wanting to do, but she was basically only a consultant, after the release of the film she wanted nothing to do with it and in the early 90’s she allowed the studio to only do two things in regards to the property.If they so choose to a sequel film could be done. A broadway show, but no one involved with the original film could be part of that project,
15. When Glynis Johns received the call from Walt to be in the film she though she was going to play Mary Poppins, but Walt wanted her as the mother and so she said as a little incentive if she could haver her own song for the film and so the Sherman Brothers rewrote a previous unused song called “Practically Perfect” into “Sister Suffragette”,
16. Many songs and sequences for the film were thought up including where the children would spin a compass and it would take them to different areas and a different song for each area where one was called North Pole Polka, another Tea in Timbuktu, while the other two unused songs found their way in other Disney films later on with The Land of Sand being reworked to become Trust in Me in The Jungle Book from 1967, and The Beautiful Briny Sea would end up in Bedknobs and Broomsticks,
17. Several of the chimney sweep dancers were the old men on the bench in Enchanted during the song “That’s How you Know”
18. Know before Walt had chose Julie to play Mary Poppins several people that were thought of as possibilities included: Bette Davis and Angela Lansbury then one sunday night the Sherman Brothers saw on the Ed Sullivan Show an excerpt performance of a broadway show called Camelot where Julie Andrews was the lead actress and they knew immediately she was the one so the next day they marched into Don Dagradi’s (another writer on the film) office and he said to them did you see the Ed Sullivan Show last night so all three of them went to Walt’s office and so then Walt went to see a performance of Camelot in New York and met with her after the show and was able to convince her to be in the film and Walt was willingly to wait as she was pregnant at the time and Julie’s husband then also ended up part of the film as he designed all of the costumes,

Dick Van Dyke ended up in the film because of an article Walt read of how he didn’t like that films then were becoming as he described as “dirty pictures” also it helped that basically everyone knew who Dick was as he had a hit tv show with The Dick Van Dyke show and this was only his second film after being in a film version of the broadway show Bye Bye Birdie,
19. The inspiration for the song Let’s Go Fly a Kite was actually from the Sherman Brothers childhood as there dad as they said would make these wonderful kites that would fly all day,

The inspiration for the song Step in Time is actually an old english folk song called Knees Up Mother Brown and the Sherman Brothers learned about it as Peter Ellenshaw who did the vidual effects and matte paintings and glass paintings for the film was basically they resident Brit taught the dance to on3 of the writer Bill Walsh and Walt Disney and Richard Sherman saw the three of them with their elbows linked together in the office kicking their knees up,

Mary Poppins is a masterpiece of a film. It's practically perfect in every way.
-Castor oil is a laxative that used to be given to children a lot
-gruel is a thin watery porridge
-barley water is a drink. Kind of a tonic made from soaking Barley in water and straining it.
-punting. Boating. A punt is a kind of boat.
Barley water is supposed to be good at fixing stomach problems including ULCERS, although I glass may not be enough, in fact I am sure it is not. Anybody with ulcers should look into it though - I know more information is given on the internet. It is a relatively fast cure (I believe) & is pretty cheap & easy. As it is from food it is relatively safe. (Everyone even using food cures should check into what ALL a food/drink does, as you may have some OTHER health issue that the food will make worse!)

Fun fact: When the children were running down the alley and the old crone stepped out and frightened them, they were genuinely terrified because the director made the decision not to tell them about it. Also, the old crone is played by Betty Lou Gerson (the narrator from Cinderella and the voice of Cruella De Vil) in one of her last roles. Walt Disney considered her his good luck charm, so he secured her this cameo role.
One of her last? That's quite a gap, because her last role before her death was 1997's Cats Don't Dance

I think you may have confused her with Jane Darwell, who played the Bird Woman. Essentially retired, Disney persuaded her to play that part, her last appearance on film.

The bird woman was played by Oscar winner Jane Darwell in her last screen appearance. She was semi-retired at the time, living in the Motion Picture Retirement Home as she was unable to care for herself & had declined the role, but Walt wanted her so he drove to the home to flatter & charm her. It worked, so he arranged for a limo to pick her up & deliver her to the studio. She was treated like a queen. Jane won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in “The Grapes of Wrath” which starred Henry Fonda. She also had a minor role in the western “3 Godfathers” which starred John Wayne…it’s an Christmas movie. She had a very long movie career.

If you want to watch her play a character, who is the polar opposite of most of her roles, have a look at The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), which starred Henry Fonda. She was an amazing actress.
I'm sure someone mentions this here, but the nanny who quits at the beginning is Elsa Lanchester, "the Bride of Frankenstein" (even though she played all kinds of roles).
No matter what kind of day I'm having, the entire "I Love To Laugh" scene with Ed Wynn never fails to lift my spirits. The jokes make me laugh no matter how many times I've heard them.
The “Do Re Mi” song is from the musical The Sound of Music but it is sung by Julie Andrews. This is the movie reaction I didn’t know I needed! So delightful! I always enjoy that hearty Ashleigh laugh.
I met Julie Andrews at a book convention back in 2001. She was signing her latest children’s book. The way the con was set up, the high demand authors had signings in the back area, and the top-tier ones required tickets that you would get in the morning. That day, I got there at 5:30 am to get in line just to get one for Julie. After I got my tickets at one of the booths and was walking away, they came on the intercom to announce that her tickets were all gone, and the groans of disappointment were really loud. When I walked up to her table, all I could think was “I am standing three feet away from Mary Frickin’ Poppins!!!” She looked amazing, just flawless, even then. We exchanged a few words and then I burbled something about how I was such a huge fan all of my life, and she was very kind, handed me my book, and I walked away, completely buzzed over the thrill of meeting her.
I'm jealous of Anne Hathaway she got to play Julie Andrew's granddaughter in Princess Diaries.
If ever I met Julie in person (which won't happen, but still) I would quite literally weep tears of joyful thanks. You lucky lady!

The chimney dance scene is ICONIC. Professional dancers have broken it down in videos I’ve seen and go on and on about how difficult and creative it is.
But Dick’s most difficult dance is in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Me Ole Bamboo
In case you didn't realize. Dick van Dyke also played the old banker who died laughing. Weirdly, he actually payed Walt Disney in order to play him.
We watched this movie whenever it aired on tv . I’m surprised you didn’t recognize that Dick Van Dyke played two characters on this movie. As a music theatre major, this HITS SO HARD for me... As a nanny, her last lines always simultaneously Inspire & CRUSH me... "It's as it should be." So glad you got to see it finally. Cheers to the WONDROUS Glynis Johns (and the entire cast)!
As a fan of Julie Andrews (grew up on her films) ... you really must watch "The Sound of Music" as that was where many of us, as children discovered her and how magical she could be. She would later go on to marry Blake Edwards - who was an incredible producer/director in Hollywood for MANY years (perhaps he was best known for his Pink Panther films with Peter Sellers... he was also responsible for many many classic comedies (including one of my personal favorites "The Great Race" with Tony Curtis (Jaime Lee Curtis' father), Natalie Wood, and Jack Lemmon) ... AND he and Julie Andrews gave us one of my favorites, "Victor-Victoria" which was WAY ahead of its time in representing the LGBTQ community
I also recommend Julie Andrews in "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "SOB"
The sound of music was one of those movies that was on TV every year as an event, and everybody stopped and watched it. If you haven’t seen it, you really should just for the cultural exposure if nothing else. It’s a beautiful story based loosely on real events & it has a lot of fun songs.
The Victor/Victoria recommendation is A plus. That is one of my most favorite movies, even if it wasn’t played on tv every year like SoM. Robert Preston (who is famous for The Music Man, another fun musical) plays an old Queen & Julie Andrews plays a starving soprano who can’t get a job. The old man hears her sing & decides to put her in a drag show where she’s a woman pretending to be a man, who is pretending to be a woman. It’s fabulous. Please check it out someday! 🙏😄
"Feed the Birds" is my favorite song. It reminds me to look past the end of my nose and to see the world around me and to stop selfishly focusing on me. And to pay it forward whenever you can.
I love this, but I’m also sad you didn’t get to experience it as a kid. Take the magic you feel now and x100 and that’s how it felt. The carpet bag scene alone was everything to my childhood imagination ❤
Same. So much so that I actually requested to go to the library to find books to figure out how they did it. Which made it even more awesome a trick when I figured it out.
Uncle Albert was played by Ed Wynn. He voiced several classic Disney characters like the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. Younger viewers will recognize the voice because the actor who voiced King Candy in Wreck-it Ralph was doing a spot-on impersonation of him.

Julie Andrew's life is very fascinating. At the time, Warner Brothers wanted to make a movie version of the big Broadway hit "My Fair Lady". Julie had played the part of Elisa for years on stage with accolades, admiration and tremendous reviews. But WB didn't want to take a chance with a "unknown" actress and chose a known star Audrey Hepburn which allowed Walt to step in and scoop Julie up for the role of Mary Poppins. We are all glad that WB dropped the ball and allowed Julie to grace us as Mary. It also, broke her "type cast" and allowed her to then step into many different roles over the years.
And Julie went on to win Best Actress for "Mary Poppins" over Audrey for "My Fair Lady". Then in her Oscar speech she thanked the executive at WB who passed on her. Such a Queen!!
I watched this movie every single day for YEARS as a child. And not like a 4 year old... until I was like 12. I was obsessed. I'm still obsessed. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are brilliant. The whole vibe of Mrs. Banks totally went over my head as a child and it's so fascinating to see the contrast in the couple. RIP Glynis.

Same here and actually as I kid I never even realized they were husband and wife and she the children's mother. lol I kept thinking she was his sister and the kids' aunt. As a kid I didn't get that in earlier times families didn't outwardly show as much affection.

In the beginning of production for this movie, they had an idea to adapt a minor chimney sweep character from the Mary Poppins books for the film, but as they researched Victorian chimney sweeps for the role, they discovered this whole culture built up around them with myths and superstitions and what they did when they weren't chimney sweeping and they decided to build up the minor character into a pseudo-narrator and major character.
10:29 - 'Punting' is riding around in a pole-driven boat. It's like Venician gondolas without the canals.
11:10 - Most people ship Mary and Bert, but I think most often the interpretation is that Bert was a child Mary was nanny for years ago and he's seen her come down several times sine then.

It's easy to miss if you didn't watch through the credits, but The Elder Mr. Dawes was also played by Dick Van Dyke.
There's two movies you need to see after this. The first is 'Saving Mr. Banks.' It's the story of the author of the Mary Poppins books and of how Walt Disney negotiated with her for the rights to make the movie. Second is 'Mary Poppins Returns. It's a direct sequel to this movie that was made about 5 years ago. It's a less subtle film, but still enjoyable.
Hmm. I got to say, if Bert was from the kind of family that could have a nanny, he wouldn't have grown up to be a chimney sweep. (And he wouldn't speak in that accent either).

Before watching Mary Poppins Returns she should watch "Bedknobs and broomsticks". Also a good and similar movie from the same time (I think it came out a year or two before or after) and it co-stars the actor that plays Mr. Banks in this movie (plus I think the little boy is in it as well but I could be remembering wrong) and there is a cameo of the maicameos. (Who I think she has said to be a fan of in the past) from it at the end of Mary Poppins Returns. So to see him in another similar movie and to understand the cameo.

If you need more Julie Andrews then you MUST see "The Sound of Music"! Also a musical with a lot of fun moments but also more serious and powerful as it is based on a true story.
Dick Van Dyke actually caught a lot of flak for his accent, as it was considered a pretty terrible approximation of a London Cockney accent, but it still makes the movie so fun. Dick Van Dyke was always my favorite actor for many years because of this movie, an incredible physical comedian, and his TV show (The Dick Van Dyke Show) shaped me in my formative years (I wasn't alive when it first aired, but I caught the reruns as a child on Nick at Nite). He also played the old man at the bank, the one who couldn't make it down the step and who floated up from the wooden leg joke at the end.
For more Gylnis Johns (and more physical comedy) I highly recommend The Court Jester with the incredible Danny Kaye, another physical comedian/actor/singer/dancer like Dick Van Dyke who really shaped my sensibilities for comedy and physical humor. They don't make stars like Kaye and Van Dyke anymore.
Growing up, I actually thought he was British because of this movie.
Worst accent very, and he thought he was nailing it. Longest running joke in cinema history. It just his regular American accent with a few odd soundly words thrown in occasionally.

A follow up movie for Dick Van Dyke would be "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and Julie Andrews "The Sound of Music". Definitely watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It is a fantastic musical comedy based on a book by Ian Fleming, the author of the original James Bond books. He wrote the story as a gift to his son.

In the dance world, that Steppin' Time dance scene is legendary for being one of the most exhausting, athletic dance 😂. It's intricate and requires you to basically be using the same muscles you use to jump... In other words, the entire thing is like doing intricate jumping jacks for like 10 minutes straight 😂
The Step In Time in the stage musical is AMAZING. The chimney sweeps dance ALL around the proscenium. One of my favorite parts.

This movie was a GIGANTIC hit when it was released. It was nominated for 13 Academy Awards (including Best Picture, of course) and won five including Best Actress for Julie Andrews.
Just one year later she would star in "The Sound of Music." It was an even bigger hit, surpassing "Gone with the Wind" as the highest grossing film off all-time. Andrews was nominated for Best Actress again, but lost to Julie Christie in the movie "Darling."😁
Ashley, if you like this one you will probably enjoy Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, it's a true classic! Dick Van Dyke's charm and talent shine through once again in this whimsical adventure. While it may not be a Disney production, it captures that magical essence just like Mary Poppins. A timeless gem that brings back the joy of childhood every time I watch it!

"Mary Poppins" is an ALL TIME CLASSIC. "Mary Poppins Returns" is something parents throw on to shut their children up for a couple hours.
@@keithdean9149 It was cute, and they tried to recapture the classic feel of the original, but whether they made it TOO similar--they hit all the same plot beats--or too modern I'm not sure, it just didn't feel right. Maybe the addition of a mustache-twirling Colin Firth ruined it for me, since *Mary Poppins* doesn't have a proper villain.
The film “Saving Mr. Banks” is the backstory of how Marry Poppins was written and then got to the silver screen. It also will explain to you what Mary Poppins is really trying to accomplish. You will ugly cry like never before. Also, “Mary Poppins Returns” is also an excellent sequel, but seriously, watch Saving Mr. Banks.

Julie Andrews almost didn't play Mary Poppins. Disney actually other choices, even Angela Lansbury to play the title role before Julie was cast. She was originally supposed to reprise her stage role Eliza Dolittle in the film version of My Fair Lady. But executives at Warner Bros passed her over for the more popular actress Audrey Hepburn in the part, even though we don't really hear her sing. (I'm not saying Audrey's performance was bad, I just wish she actually sang in the film rather than having someone dub her voice. I can buy it animated films, but it's a stretch in live action musicals.) Disney then jumped at the chance, and picked Andrews to play Mary Poppins.
I heard Audrey's actual singing voice instead of the woman who sang for her. Audrey has a great voice. She sang in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I also wish they would have used Audrey's actual singing voice. They had her change her voice to Cockney. But not her actual singing voice.
And when Julie Andrews won her Best Actress Oscar for Mary Poppins the first thing she said in her acceptance speech was "Thank you Jack Warner" who was famously the reason why she wasn't cast in My Fair Lady.

It’s funny you mentioned that Marry Poppins could be a horror movie. Years ago someone made a fake movie trailer where they took clips from the movie and put suspenseful music over them to make it seem like a horror movie and it’s incredibly effective.

The sequel “Mary Poppins Returns” is pretty good also. Emily Blunt does a great job in the role of Mary Poppins. Lin Manuel Miranda did most the music for it. You should also check out “Saving Mr Banks” it’s about how Disney got the rights to the movie. 11:20 Dick Van Dyke is amazing in this movie. I love his dance moves and he can still do a lot of it 11:57 this and Alice in Wonderland are excellent to view high (or so I’ve heard 🤫). 16:55 he was the Mad Hatter in the original “Alice in Wonderland” and did some other Disney movies like “Absent Minded Professor”, “Babes in Toyland”, “That Darn Cat” & “The Gnome-Mobile”(it’s a great movie for St Patrick’s Day along with “Darby O’Gill and the Little People”) 20:00 Love Dick Van Dyke playing Old Man Dawes. 28:33 definitely check out “Saving Mr Banks”. In its original Broadway run _Bye Bye Birdie_ won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Featured Actor for Dick van Dyke. In the film adaptation he reprises his Tony winning role. It's also the film that introduced Ann-Margret, and it co-stars Janet Leigh (which I mention knowing how much you like a Jamie Leigh Curtis connection).
I second Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the fantasy aspects similar to Marry Poppins.
There was a show on Disney+ a few years ago where they looked for props and stuff from older movies and Karen Dotrice (Jane) was shown her costume from this movie. It was so touching, and she was almost in tears with all the memories.
Julie Andrews is beautiful, and makes a decent looking man too! In Victor/Victoria, she plays a woman who becomes a female impersonator.
I had the pleasure of seeing a Disney licensed Stage Play version about 10 years ago. The Chimney scene was indeed awesome! Real live tap dancing is amazing to see! They also had Mary "fly" up over the audience to the balcony to exit! Great movie, some strange moments indeed. I always enjoy seeing you react!

According to Dick Van Dyke (Bert was my first movie crush, when it was rereleased, as Disney used to do), the reason his accent was so atrocious, is because his vocal coach was Irish, teaching him to speak British English. DVD is a legend, he really is. He's in his 90s now, and not long ago he was on The Masked Singer! He even did a little dance when they revealed him. He was also in the Mary Poppins sequel, which was a pretty good movie, and it made me tear up to see him. Then Angela Lansbury showed up, and I started sobbing. Speaking of which, Ashleigh, you still owe HER a movie, she passed in 2022. You may know her as Jessica Fletcher from "Murder, She Wrote." I recommend "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." It has the actor who played Mr. Banks in it too! Dick Van Dye and also several members of his family were in the show "Diagnosis Murder" where Van Dyke's character, Dr. Sloan, solves mysteries.
Some people already touted for Danny Kaye's "The Court Jester"... which does have Angela Lansbury in a leading role. That would make a perfect reaction for one of the great comedic actors _and_ Angela _and_ Glynis Johns.
I might actually recommend she watch the sequel Mary Poppins returns. I'm sure opinions are divided but I just love it and as you say both Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury are in it. And I'm sure there'll be lots of requests for watching Saving Mr Banks as well.
That said if she hasn't watched Beauty and The Beast the animated film yet, then that would be amazing!

I haven't seen "The Court Jester" in ages, but remember it as being just seriously delightful! And Ashleigh enjoyed Kaye in "White Christmas" too, so I bet she'd be up for it! My grandmother made me a Mary Poppins doll, in full Jolly Holiday dress, with the bows and parasol and all. She did it by rewatching my VHS and pausing it frame by frame to sketch the design and then sewed it.
A magical musical of a movie for children of all ages. Fun fact: Dick Van Dyke not only starred in this movie, but also appeared in 'Mary Poppins Returns' (2018). Much to her credit, Dame Julie Andrews did not appear in Mary Poppins Returns because she felt the film was "Emily's show" (Emily Blunt) and "did not want to hog the spotlight."
Mary Poppins has always been one of my favorites! Dick Van Dyke is an absolute legend. This movie is so amazing from a technical standpoint!
Also, fun fact: Walt loved Feed the Birds. If he was having a rough day he would have one of the Sherman brothers play it for him. When it is played at the parks it is almost always used as a tribute to Walt!

"Feed the Birds, Tuppence a Bag" gets the big treatment because it was Walt Disney's favourite song from any movie they ever made.
You can make your own kite with 2 sticks tied together into an X, a piece of cloth 2ft square and string, the last one I made flew 1800ft off the ground....we use 3 spools of cotton tied together....
Ashleigh I for one would SO wholeheartedly enjoy seeing you get into the classic movie musicals! There are so many good ones, especially from the 60s and 70s. I especially love “The Sound of Music” (for more Julie Andrew’s!), “My Fair Lady” (the beautiful Audrey Hepburn), and “Fiddler on the Roof” (sad at times but incredibly engrossing storytelling).

You might really enjoy “Saving Mr. Banks,” which tells some of the behind the scenes stories of the making of this movie, along with a fictionalized biography of the author. It stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as “P.L. Travers” (the author’s pseudonym).
I’m surprised that movie didn’t do better. It’s really good, and the performances are fantastic.
Now with Mr. Banks I have serious problems with. It is clearly a failed Oscar-Bait film that alters a lot of facts and add things that never happened:
First of all Travers had signed over the rights before she went to California.
Second there was no Ralph the Driver.
Third the song that won her over was Feed the Birds not Let’s Go Fly a Kite.
Fourth Traver never went to Disneyland.
Fifth one of the few things that was right is she did tape record all of the story meetings and was an absolute B%$th to the Sherman Brothers.
Sixth is more of a personal complaint is when she sees Robert Sherman using a cane and makes a jab that he probably deserved it. He fought in World War 2.
Seventh the making references to the film things these kind of movies do to be specific what they do to incorporate ideas and lines from Mary Poppins to make it seem as though it was part of her childhood when that didn’t happen.

Jolly Holiday is basically one of my core memories and the whole movie is why I grew up loving Dick Van Dyke. Also, every time we it was on, my dad always told us he had a crush on Glynis Johns as a kid after seeing her play a mermaid in another movie, lol. When my niece was little, her favorite was Mr. Banks, and she'd coo, "George!" as soon as he came on screen. It was adorable.
The "A man has dreams" scene, where Bert songs the "Spoonfull of Sugar" reprise to Mr. Banks is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
Just the way Banks' face changes as he reals what a schmuck he's been is priceless.

One of my favorite scenes in any movie is Mr banks walking towards the bank, with the music of Feed the Birds playing, and him walking past the places of where the children went during the movie...i get a tear in my eye
I loved this movie as a kid (I'm 58 now), and hadn't watched it for years as an adult because I thought it may not hold up. But one day a friend lent me the DVD when he found out I hadn't watched in years. And it was even more magical than I'd remembered. ❤
Loved your reaction Ashleigh! This film is a classic and one of my favorite childhood films. Now that you've seen this, I would definitely recommend watching "Saving Mr. Banks." The film focuses on P.L. Travers, the woman who wrote the book of Mary Poppins that this film is based on, and the experiences she had working with Walt Disney and his cast members on the film. Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney and Emma Thompson plays P.L. Travers. It's a great film and honestly kind of a tear jerker.

I'm always baffled, you've never seen the very movies I practically wrecked the tapes of from watching so much 😂
The feed the birds song always makes me cry. It's implied that the woman is homeless and uses the money from feeding the birds(her only companions) to feed herself. I remember being about 5 or so and realizing that people could be thrown out onto the street and forgotten. A concept that of course hadn't accorded to me as a child but broke my heart and stayed with me forever.
This movie is iconic and has been spoofed so many times. My personal favorite is the Simpsons episode with "Sherry Bobbins". My goodness that episode spoofs this perfectly -- including the feet pointing each way (as she scrapes the hood of a car on her umbrella descent). And as others have mentioned I really, really hope you watch The Sound of Music. It's a lot heavier than this movie, but it's one of the greatest movies of all times and such a great watch.
I love that you used subtitles. I always use them in musicals because it helps me catch all the brilliant lyrics that can push the story forward.
I love too that the two tuppence songs essentially point out the difference between putting money in the bank to get richer and putting money to use helping others.

Subtitles are sometimes helpful when they get them right. They can, however, get confusing when the policeman on the phone says that it is not Mr Bank's "regular 'abit" (dropping the h in habit) but the subtitle says "regular rabbit." Captioning is done quickly and cheaply, and so such errors are all too common.

I never realized how beautiful Julie Andrews was until I was decades into adulthood. She’s literally flawless in this movie.
Not knowing Dick Van Dyke you may not have noticed that not only did he play Bert, but he also played Mr. Dawes Sr. (the owner of the bank who died laughing)
I have seen this movie innumerable times, and even raised my kids with these lullabies and sayings. My 21-year-old still hops to it when I say "Spit Spot!" 😄❤️ THANK YOU!
I'm old enough to remember when this was first released. It was a huge deal, with a lot of advance hoopla and tie-ins. I remember a cereal company (I think it was Post) had toys in some of their cereals that were spring-loaded chimneys that launched a character into the air, like in the rooftop dance.
And my sister won a Halloween costume contest with her Mary Poppins costume that year.
The spring loaded chimney was from the Shreddy's cereal , I remember Shredies having some of the best prizes.

Also, this hadn't been released yet when she was cast for Sound of Music but the writers went to Disney to view footage to see how she was on the big screen and signed her before anyone else could. Sound of Music is long and has some serious parts but as others have said, it's a must watch. Her chemistry with the gorgeous Christopher Plummer was spot on and her character was vital in the amazing character arc he experienced. The cinematography and lighting was beyond perfection for the 60s and I'll watch all 3 hours just to hit play and watch another 3 hours if I have the time.
Great reaction Ashleigh! RIP Glynis. Another more recent Julie Andrews film I highly recommend watching is "The Princess Diaries" with Anne Hathaway (her first film). Also, fun fact: Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke have remained good friends ever since they starred in this "Mary Poppins".

I was always under the impression that Mary Poppins and Bert were both angels, always out to help the world in their own ways.
I remember watching this on the magical world of disney as a kid, and my sister and I LOVING the chimney sweep big number scene, hopping from couch, to love seat, to coffee table, and back, hahah! it's a comfort watch film now, when I need some whimsy in my life. can't wait for you to see the sound of music!
