    5:02 In the older days of television, it was relatively common practice for the subtitles to condense dialogue so it could be read at a slower pace. Transcribers didn't care too much about point-for-point accuracy, since the only reason you'd have to read those captions is if you couldn't hear what the film was saying to begin with. Honestly, as long as the "meaning" of the dialogue isn't changed, I wouldn't care too much about it.

    • @ARCtheCartoonMaster
      @ARCtheCartoonMaster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Once I was watching _Futurama_ and Amy asks Fry, "What business is it of yours?" And the captioning said, "It's none of your business." I mean, fair enough, the latter sounds more natural anyway.

Richard Sherman actually recalls that Walt would come into his office and have him play this while Walt gazed out the window. Banks' song about his orderly life was meant to demonstrate A) how oblivious he was to his home (because he was working himself into an early grave providing for that wretched family) and B) how when he was there to run things up until the coming of Mary Poppins, things seemed to go smoothly because _he made them go smoothly_ when he was there. And thanks to her, he's now able to see how things are when he's not controlling them.

    For anyone watching this, if you have never heard of Peter Ellenshaw and if you enjoy art or love the Mary Poppins film, do yourself a favour and do a quick Google search for Peter Ellenshaw and Disney matte paintings. Ellenshaw was a genius in the artworks he made over the years, including film matte backgrounds. In Mary Poppins, the background scenes he painted included the English park background at the film beginning, side and top painted extensions to the interior bank scene at 10:41, basically the entirety of the lamp lit London park scene that Mr Banks walks through on his way to the bank after the earlier 'run on the bank' scene, virtually the entirety of Admiral Boom's house and rooftop with only a small part of this being physical props for the two actors to stand on/interact with. Peter Ellenshaw's work was, and is, incredible.

      @@cudak888 Thanks cudak888. I agree re: The Love Bug. There is a matte painting that Ellenshaw did for that movie of a foggy, light-filled San Francisco street/city backdrop when Jim Douglas is searching for Herbie, and that background makes my jaw drop each time I see it. I can't say how many of Ellenshaw's paintings I wish, or dream, that I could walk into and explore.

    "Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul's
    The little old birdwoman comes.
    In her own special way to the people she calls,
    'Come, buy my bag full of crumbs.
    Come feed the little birds. Show them you care,
    And you'll be glad if you do.
    Their young ones are hungry, their nests are so bare.
    All it takes is tuppence from you.
    Feed the birds, tuppence a bag.
    Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.
    Feed the birds.' That's what she cries.
    While overhead, her birds fill the skies.
    All around the cathedral the saints and apostles
    Look down as she sells her wares.
    Although you can't see it, you know they are smiling
    Each time someone shows that he cares.
    Though her words are simple and few,
    Listen, listen, she's calling to you.

      I remember the first time I saw that movie as a kid I ran around for the next 2 weeks constantly singing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I'm surprised my father didn't murder me. :)

      What about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? These three were my childhood! They all have good actors/actresses and catchy songs. I literally just sang Feed the Birds to some kids I was babysitting; so yeah I'm one of those ppl that absolutely adores all 3 movies...

      Totally agree. Mary Poppins never appealed to me when I was a young'un, but I absolutely LOVED Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

    Here is my beef about this film. The film suggests that George Bank is a workaholic with no time for his children. So at the end of the film while flying a kite with his kids He is given a promotion? Wouldn't that job require even more time and commitment?

    • @Mr12Relic
      @Mr12Relic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      His promotion was from Junior Officer (probably approving loans) to Junior Partner, a managerial oversight position. He'd have far greater control over his schedule.

      Maybe not, have you ever seen a store director doing work? I haven't, and that position is considered a promotion.

      George working a lot though doesn’t correlate to him not spending time with his children though. Even when he’s not working in the morning and evening, he’s cold to them. His arc is not about realising he should stop working because it’s taking a toll on family time but he comes to appreciate and love his children more

    Great movie, probably one of Disney's best. One of the few musical movies where most of the songs are good. No director would probably do that three minute walk to Mr. Banks firing, but it draws sympathy and demonstrates just how lonely he feels.

    • @austinnix4416
      @austinnix4416 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it also demonstrates the fact that this is his movie. It's not about Mary Poppins or the children. This is Mr. Banks' story.
