I am able to grow tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini (courgette), summer squash (2 varieties), many herbs, blueberries, strawberries, maybe eggplant (auburgine)and cucumber (fingers crossed that they produce). I do not get a lot of full sun, but I am able to get a harvest.

    Hi from Australia (Victoria )
It is so exciting watching your veggie garden develop. You are so fortunate to have access to that wonderful manure!
I live in a Retirement Village but have enough space for a small veggie patch.. I like grow tomatoes, onions, beans, sometimes cucumber and eggplant, lettuce, capsicum ( they didn't do well last year) ,various herbs. I don't know if I save money but I do get great tasting organic produce.
Loved seeing all the happy animals at your friends property, and of course your sweet doggies!😊

I remember visiting my girlfriend's family in Brittany during college, years ago. Her grandfather had a large house in town that was literally built as a townhouse next to the local elementary school. The back yard of the school was a giant walled-in playground. And on the house side was a walled-in garden that could have fed an army! Good times...

I tried the gardening in the ground, I'm to old and breathing is to hard these days to get out and weed. Also, tried the container gardening the weeds we have just grew up through the containers after 2 years. I ended up pulling it all up and starting over again. I did put cardboard in several layers down didn't work. This year I'm done I'm selling my containers. By the time I bought all that manure and dirt it just wasn't worth the struggle. I have a couple of pots I'll put cucumbers in and one or two tomato plants but, that the end for me. I just went to the store with my "dirt" money and bought several flats of veggies. All done and no swearing at my husband to come and help me. Neither of us really enjoy being outside (we were raised in the country). We seen enough grass, and trees.

We live on a third of an acre, including house, driveway etc . Our back yard is almost all garden. We freeze and can as much as we can. We estimated we ate, canned and froze about $ 1,000 worth of food including what we shared with family and friends. Our front yard has 2 apples trees and 2 peach trees. I love your videos they are great motivation for us!

Growing up we lived in a new housing development and my horse was boarded a few blocks away. I would ride her home and she would often poo in the street. Neighbors went crazy for the manure for their gardens! Truly organic....only grass, hay, grain and occasionally some carrots! Best garden soil ever! I would never get anything done as I would be so distracted by the animals. It is so nice your friends let you raid their manure pile. I'm sure they appreciate you hauling it away. Mutually beneficial situation!
Being disabled I can't physically garden. But when I bought my home 26 years ago, there was a rhubarb plant. It has faithfully returned each year. My neighbors will harvest it to make strawberry rhubarb pie or rhubarb bread. I'm not a fan but I'm glad to see it get used. I do keep one small pot of geraniums by my back door. It's about all I can manage to care for myself. I'm in the midwest U.S. and our last freeze date is mid-May, so we have a short growing season. Many people here start plants from seeds inside their houses in the winter. They either put them in their basement or cellar or in a cooler room. You may be able to try that to save a bit. Also it is easy to regrow green onions by putting them in water after using. Wasn't sure if you were aware or if you have or eat them. Thanks for another great video! I always love seeing animals!!

Phoenix AZ---I missed the winter and spring growing season. Got covid on Thanksgiving, threw me into heart failure that damaged my heart. Had surgery Mar 1st, had lots of complications but on the way up now. I can never keep anything alive in the horrid summer heat so I will start again in October. Years ago we kept pigs at a friends farm and I would haul the pig muck home. Best gardens ever then!! Good luck with your plants. I wish you a banner season!!

Aubergines I grow successfully in a Quebec Canada which has a short growing season. I plant them in late May and harvest in late August by actually buying a small plant and growing them in a container. Last year I had 3 different types of aubergines. They like good rich soil and fertilizer so your horse muck should work very well. I add my organic fertilizer to the containers halfway through the growing season. If you plant them with other veggies make sure they are near good companion plants. Make sure they don’t get over watered so if you will have several days of rain move the containers to inside the polytunnel. The varieties I had most success with are the long Asian types and the round ones . Good luck.

I use to volunteer at an organic farm and they would go and get zoo poo to use in the soil. It sets for 8 to 12 months. It never smelled and it helped produce the most gorgeous vegetables. It came from the elephants, giraffes and camels.

Your yard looks like a beautiful park. I have to wait a few weeks before I get to start playing in the garden. I am getting inspired by your efforts. 😊 Great video you two. I am raising all of my vegetables from seed indoors on a rack with some LED lights, in our family room, with a wood burner. So far I have celery, tomatoes-4 types, peppers-5 types, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, 4 kinds of basil, dill, chamomile, rosemary, bee balm, and 6 varieties of flowers. I save seeds from each years crops, and we get some seeds from MIGardener at $2 a packet. I start cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkin and squash next week.

Hi from Sydney! I collect bags of horse manure from a local riding school for $1 a bag. It’s the best for growing veges - everything flourishes! I’m amazed at people thinking horses are carnivores or fed hormones that (unfortunately) some animals bred for food are given. Horse manure is also one of the few manures that can be used after only minimal aging without ‘burning’ your new seedlings.

I find gardening hard work but very satisfying, the produce tastes better than anything you will ever buy in the shops. I managed to pick enough blackberries and freed them that I have been eating the a couple of times a week all through the winter, they are coming to an end now but I have really enjoyed them and it has saved me paying high prices for berries over the winter.

    • @Katrusyas_World
      @Katrusyas_World 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@FrugalQueeninFrance Thank you for the question, Jane.
I made raised beds in the greenhouse, up to 10 cm high. The beds are placed on the ground and filled with the soil from the supermarket. When I plant the seedlings, I add some homemade compost.
With watering, it depends on the weather. I water the plants manually, normally, every second or third day.
As far as I know, the eggplant doesn’t like drafts. So, I intend to plant my plants in the area with no direct draft.
I’m not a professional gardener but I got some experience with eggplant in 2022. It was a hot summer here, the plants grew outside in a container but I harvested only 3 fruits. It was disappointing! The only possible mistake was, I think, the windy spot, where the container stood. That’s why I want to try growing them in the greenhouse. There will be a more favorable climate for them, I hope!
Great thanks for the nice and informative videos, Jane! I enjoy every one of them!
At the end of the growing season, I will be glad to see, what you managed to grow and harvest in your garden! I wish you the very best luck! 👍

Your garden is going to be wonderful this season. We are going into Winter here in Australia. I live on my family’s farm in a small unit. I have an enclosed garden but it has two big gums in it, so any successful effort at gardening must be in above ground containers. At the moment I have 7 old baths (the family run a business that means they can access this type of thing, and they save them from landfill) I have two large Esky’s (coolers) and 3 old wheelbarrows (family use wheelbarrows in their business and they fall apart quickly) I have access to sheep manure, (which is one of the best you can use) and cow and chicken manure. We have mixed clean fill (soil) with the manure and I have filled everything. I have some winter vegetables in, and some herbs, but the majority of the containers are are going to rot down over winter, ready for spring planting. I am 70 years old, and now that the ‘hard work’ of setting up is done, I should be able to manage the garden quite well in the future. Love your videos.

I'm also working on my veggie garden for the season in my new house. Starting from scratch has not been easy, when I already had a mature veggie garden in my previous house. However, I am starting from scratch with a knowledge and experience I didn't have before, so I hope everything will be better than before in no time... I would like to leave a suggestion regarding lettuce: I planted 2 of each different varieties I found in the nursery (5 in total), and I usually pick some of the outer leaves to use in the next 2 or 3 days in my summer salads. Doing that I significantly extend the life of each lettuce and I keep consuming smaller fresh leaves that are tastier. Try that instead of just picking a mature lettuce when it's ready for harvest. ;)

I have a Greenstalk (a vertical planter) because I have no place for a garden. It has 7 rows of 6 pockets, and is about 6 feet high. Last year I had 6 different herbs, 12 strawberry plants and 4 different kinds of flowers in 4 rows (24 flower plants). I grew Lobelias, nasturtiums, daisies, and petunias. It looked lovely cascading over the planter. I had intended to sell it this year but you are making me rethink that plan.

Hi Jane and Mike! We are growing Roma and sun gold tomatoes. Small eggplants, onions, beets, banana peppers, Trombetta di Albenga squash, (my favorite!), and my husband’s hot chili plants. I just harvested 2 small delicious cabbage plants I grew over the winter. We have raised beds also. Our climate is a Mediterranean climate. It gets very warm in the summer. I hope your garden is abundant and delicious! I enjoyed your video today. Thank you!

Hi, some ideas that we have done and had good success in the 79 area are: perpetual celery, aubergines need warmth and a sunny spot. Potatoes get covered with straw as soon as they are planted. The horse manure is used as gold dust, i.e. just a small amount for each plant. The lawn cuttings are put around the plants to keep the moisture and to suppress the weeds. Happy veggie gardening.😊

I love your garden. We are in North Carolina, USA. We have 4 large raised beds. Right now I have some herbs in: sage, parsley and oregano which all overwintered. Early spring I planted cabbages, broccoli, carrots, turnips and a variety of lettuces, which we are beginning to use along with radishes every day. More recently we put in tomatoes and our first pole beans and a few cucumbers. Under grow lights inside ive up potted more herbs, peppers and marigolds.
I know you are enjoying being outside and getting your hands in the dirt. Enjoy your garden ! I love your channel!

Wow, all that hard work...and beautiful compost! Well done!
Also from Victoria Australia here. We are going into autumn/winter plantings at the moment. I have cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, and snow peas on the go. After a late start we had numerous tomatoes over summer. I am giving away lots of limes also!
All the best with your spring/summer crops 😊

I don't grow a big garden anymore as i live alone. Just a few tomatoes, squash, peas and cucumbers mixed among my flower beds. I buy the rest at the local farmers market here. I love this time of year but we're in the higher elevation so can't plant outdoors until late May.

We are growing tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, pole beans, arugula, romaine, and red leaf lettuces. And a few cabbages. Plus a a small herb garden nearer to the house. We're still learning too and hope our tomatoes do better this year.

Beets (beetroot) can be started from seed. I enjoy beet leaves chopped up and added to tomato sauce. Garden looks good! I have a garden, grow tomatoes, onions, garlic, beans, lettuce. This year I am trying potatoes. Enlarged my square foot garden a little this year. I also have 2 vertical planters and plant flowers and some vegetables in them too.

I'm waiting to put in some carrots, beans, bell peppers, tomatoes and cantaloupe until it warms up a bit.
I think anything you can grew saves you money in the long run. It certainly tastes better!

i gave up trying to garden as i don't get outside much anymore. 5 years ago.. i tried to grow a garden in my living room.. the animals ate it all before i got even a bean on the vine or a carrot. so i gave up for a few years. i really miss playing in the dirt. so this year.. i have gotten 2 fish tanks. lol i figure i can put a lid on them and have a grow light or 2. i started lettuce and spinach in a pot here in my house by my window. they are growing profusely. i have not had to buy lettuce for 3 weeks now. i have one with carrots in it. i am pulling the carrots to use the stems and tops in stews and soups.. different flavor for us but really good. i put 2 beans in a cat treat plastic container. they are flowering beautifully. i am really surprised it is working. it is starting to help with our food now. i am trying to find someone who can put the big fish tank that i have cleaned it very well, onto wheels as it will be to heavy for me to move after i put dirt in it. i shall see if it helps us more and more or if it is to much trouble. i love your garden. it is so beautiful. i can't wait to see how yours grows and how much it helps you both. thank you for another great video.

The fish tank glass is heavy (all by itself), please consider plastic utility bins [generally inexpensive] (some come with wheels already) the kind where you store clothing or other personal things, etc. You could even make a cut-out on the lid if you want a lighting source. You can even drill drainage holes, something you couldn't with the fish tanks.

You should really consider growing lambs lettuce/mache. It’s so easy to grow. Then you can let some of it go to seed and it replants itself!
I grow tomatoes, 🌶️ peppers, celery, lettuce, spinach, Asian greens, mache, peas, beans, eggplant, raspberries, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, squash, zucchini, Jerusalem artichokes, cucamelon , beets, rhubarb, edible flowers, basil and other herbs. I can and preserve ( freeze, dry) as much as I can for winter 🥶

Why not put some wire mesh under the herb bed so it can “breathe” and not get waterlogged? Just curious. I know you have had issues with critters digging through. I am surrounded by tall trees so I have problems with tree roots. I put down a thick layer of newspaper and that is good for a few years. I absolutely soak it before putting compost etc on. It acts as a water reservoir for the summer.
Save your eggshells and grind them up. Put a circle of crushed shells around each lettuce plant. Beware of leaf “bridges”. Slugs generally hate crossing the eggshells.
Must go. Making rhubarb relish. The house smells wonderful.

The horse muck you got is going to be perfect to grow in. As far as the comments you've gotten about growing your food in toxic horse muck, those people are probably from the US where they allow so many chemicals to be in use. European countries have banned most of those chemicals so you shouldn't have the same concerns we would have in the US. I wish our government would ban them too. Your gardens are taking shape and can't wait to see how well everything grows for you this year.

I look forward to seeing your garden progress! I won't have much garden this year but hopefully will be back on track with it for autumn crops as my plan is to transition to raised beds versus planting straight in the ground.

I have picked up some herbs (thyme and basil) and a patio tomato plant today in the farmers market for €12.50 (3 herbs for €10, €2.50 for the tomato). I am reduced to an apartment balcony which is quite windy - but I have peas and mange tout started in window boxes, I’ve already eaten salad leaves a couple of lunches, and I was able to get 3 more tomatoes to germinate from old seed so fingers crossed for later season results. My plan, as I am alone here, is to oven dry some tomatoes to pack in oil, and can some more as jars of sauce. I’m also doing an old tick of reusing takeaway coffee cups (yes, sorry I have that habit a coup,e of times a week) as starter pots for my French beans as they are nice and deep, but pull apart easily when the plants are ready to plant out in window boxes. I’m hoping to get a couple of courgettes growing as well. I am guessing this year will trial and error as I get used to the new environment, but I am so happy to see green things again.
