    Thanks for the video! I've been plant-based for a couple years now but my goal this year is to gain knowledge about the science & benefits and improve on communicating them to others. It's frustrating having parents who repeatedly try (and fail) all sorts of restrictive fad diets and won't simply eat plants because they think it's extreme -lol. Thanks for sharing some of the science in a clear and concise way, I appreciate it.

      Use your oven more, baked potatoes, your own oil free fries, roasted veggies, season with salt/herbs/spices and add a salad on the side or 1 type of veggie (peppers). Rice isn't too bad, try wild rice, brown rice or black rice.

    I am so confused. I have heard so many ex-vegans talk about losing teeth, hair falling out, being very low on vital nutrients, and an overall feeling of "yuck". I tried being vegan for 4 months. I felt "ok", lost 10 pounds, and didn't really crave meat at all. I started eating "normally" again around November 8. I've now decided to start back to vegetarianism to try to get myself back on track. I will see how I feel in a few months. I love your videos!

And PS. you are not preachy, just informative and I think you come across as caring and wanting to make a difference. Please share you mashed potato and gravy recipe, pretty please! I think you answered this, but when you talk about high carbs, does it matter if I really prefer veg over fruit? ie.just eat high carb vegetables? This has always nagged at me.

    Lily, the videos you make are awesome, thank you. Been watching your videos for quite some time and they have been really helpful, so thank you very much.
    I was doing pretty good for quite a while of avoiding most of the overly processed vegan junk food and keeping added fats and salts to a pretty decent minimum, but then came along a big stressful reno that lasted all summer and into the fall. So, I decided as a kick start into hopefully getting me into eating mostly a whole foods diet (always vegan of course) I'd do 30 days of just potato's with minimal amounts of seasonings and sauces, like Andrew from Spud fit just did(He was also recently on the Rich Roll podcast).
    What are your thought's on that? I'm doing it as an experiment, and I think it'll help get me used to not eating the junk food and make eating prominently whole plant foods the majority of the time my default. Weight loss is also a goal, but in no way is the main reason I'm doing this. And also not into calorie restricting at all either. I am shocked at how fast I"m losing the weight after only being on day 6 I'm down 8.4lbs. So far I feel good. I do miss my kick ass greens n banana smoothies in the mornings, but I also like a bit of a challenge and think this is a good kick start for someone like me that has been binging on the crap food.
    I also have been pretty quiet about it to friends and family, as I don't really want to promote a super restrictive diet as "how us crazy vegans eat" but feel I need this as a bit of a kick start, and 30 days of this, for me, feels like it could be just what I need.
    Oh, and the other thing you brought up about sleep is one I know I really gotta make more of a priority, that is honestly the hardest thing to commit to for me, but I know I just gotta do it....as it's about 11pm right now.
    Anyways, sorry it's a long comment that is all over the place as usual, but I always appreciate your feedback.

    Im going to thank you for this simple yet fullfilling video. During december i stoped My work outs (i wasnt in the mood for it) i started to eat more junk food (always vegan) and Im getting really sick of tracking My calories ( ive been losing weight and Im 15 pounds away of My ideal weight) by the way, My calories need is about 1280 per day.
    I told myself to Try out the raw diet but i love eating fats (mainly avocatoes, not a Big fan of oils) and is pretty cold from where i live. But Im keep My diet as i used to, WITH COOKED FOOD and not worrying about My macros, still scared about the calories intake since Im pretty close to My ideal weight. Keep it in mind that i am really short woman (5,1) and a mother of two with a good hormonal funtion and a mesoform body. Best Regards Lilly.

    Okay. I have to ask. I tried being fully vegan for six months but as the months went by and I became more strict and no slips (like a random piece of bread with eggs or something) I began to have more and more issues with my hypoglycemia. I talked with a dietician and, while she was supportive of my plant based diet, she says I really needed to up my protein to manage my blood sugar. I could use some advice on this. Do you already have a video on this? I've tried protein bars and shakes but they still don't seem like enough. Thanks for any help or advice! I'm still primarily plant based because I have an alpha-gal allergy but include chicken or fish a few times a week to alleviate the horrific blood sugar issues I was having. Thanks again. ❤

    • @rheamorales1329
      @rheamorales1329 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Work Hard Eat Kind, I am writing only from my experience here. This week I celebrated my six month veganniversary. I stopped having symptoms of hypoglycemia during this time, actually within the first few weeks, my symptoms were gone. Twenty-two years of hypoglycemia made my life challenging. I am so happy to not have to deal with it anymore. Are you getting enough calories from whole plant foods? This is not a time to calorie restrict. Nuts have both protein and fat. I have enjoyed veggie delete with avocado and vegan Italian white bread or wheat at Subway while on vacation. Did coconut curry vegetables at P.F.Changs when treated out to lunch...sodium was high, but wow, what a treat. Bread is fine. I found a high protein bread that had lentil ingredients in it. Bread without animal products is vegan. Staying hydrated is important with hypoglycemia as water dilutes sugar levels in the blood; again from my experience. Exercise is important, as Lily says, I started an easy XBX workout last August. Don't be overly strict. Make friends with plants. I dabbled with increased fruits and veggies in my diet for two years before committing to going vegan. NutritionFacts.org has lots of videos. Lily here at Legit Nutrition Hawaii is a terrific resource. I hope you have a healthier 2017. :)

    • @lilykoihawaii
      @lilykoihawaii  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fat and/or refined sugars were always my hypoglycemia triggers. Maybe you can ask your dietitian to show you the metabolic pathway in which amino acid digestion influences blood sugar regulation? Proteins, generally speaking, aren't your body's preferred fuel... and if they are used to make energy, they're metabolized into glucose first, which produces ammonia and nitrogen as a byproducts, which are toxic to your kidneys. So, to me, that recommendation is based more on diet books, like atkins, that are based on bad science. My first questions would be: what % of your calories is coming from fats? and are you eating enough at meals to sustain you for 4-5 hours? Sometimes hypoglycemia can be mistaken as hyperglycemia if we're not eating enough. Hope this is helpful! I feel for you with the blood sugar swings... they used to make my life hell, too.

    Just wondering how you feel about the keto diet and intermittent fasting trend? A couple of things you said in this video as well as your lymphatic system video go against IF and keto.

    I'm actually slowly making changes to my diet. Starting with eating greens. How much water should I drink is 4 litres too much?

    Oh and quick question.. Have you ever heard of semolina? I dearly apologize if you`re response is 'well duh' because I only got introduced to it a few days ago, and I want to know what you`re thoughts are on it as one of my staple foods. I`m scared I swop it out for brown rice every now and it`s actually not as nutritious as I`m assuming right now. Thanks ;-)

    Hi Lilly! Do you work as nutritionist? I'm thinking about becoming one but wonder if I will be "allowed" to apply vegan treatment on patients. Is it possible to study to vegan nutritionist?

    What do you recommend for people who had weight-loss surgery? I’ve had the gastric sleeve surgery 5 years ago but I’m worried I’m not getting enough calories. I want to eat at least 1500, that’s the most I can eat comfortably. is that ok?

    Hey, I don't have eating disorders, and I'm not trying to loose weight. But when I mesure my calories in a day, it's not much more than 1000. And I'm not becoming an esqueleton. If I try to eat more, my digestion has a hard time processing all of that. Maybe some people don't need that much

    Hi Lilly, thanks for this post! What is your opinion about destiled water u mentioned in a video? I was drinking it for months but couldn't find some backed up data about flushig electrolites and what that acctually mean.. Thank you!

    • @lilykoihawaii
      @lilykoihawaii  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Distilled water has no electrolytes, so your body has to use its own to balance your bodily fluids, which can lead to a net electrolyte loss. Electrolytes are minerals, so that means that if you're drinking plain distilled or reverse osmosis water, you end up peeing out more minerals than you drink. If you have an awesome diet, not a huge deal, but unnecessary mineral loss isn't great in any situation. Which is why I recommend adding in a couple of mineral drops like the Concentrace brand shown in this video. Thanks for your question!

    one thing that still confuse me (and hard for me to answer when my friends ask me) is that, if animal products are harmful then why older studies (or recent ones,idk of those exist) said that they are healthy for human? like, there is a lot of studies that said aninal products are healthy and my friends said those confuse them..maybe anyone know how to explain about this? because idk about this too

      Eric Doe Using Dr Greger's traffic light system they'd be considered a yellow light food (processed plant food) maybe even red light (highly processed plant food). Not considered health-promoting in themselves, but if they keep you off the animal foods and help you eat more green light foods (whole plants) then why not? The more green you eat the better, and a bit of yellow every now and then won't kill you :)

      What Hannah said! They're certainly not ideal foods, as they're processed and high in isolated proteins, but they're also not the worst things you can eat.
