I worked in a hospital before RvW. Several women a week came into our ER suffering from a septic illegal abortions, we barely saved some. After RvW, I never saw another one in the rest of my 46 years in medicine. Imagine that.

There's no such thing as a "safe" abortion. It's a complete myth. And even if there are no physical effects there is often enormous psychological damage.

Oh my gosh! WOW. That's like the drug addicts that are harmed by self-treating when the medical system fails to give in and give them drugs illegally. What a shame. We should let them get addicted to legal drugs so the hospitals make money. Human lives are not worth anything unless you're irresponsibly having fun and destroying lives while the money keeps floating up! AMIRITE!? hahaha Why bother with sex education and expecting adults to be responsible for their bodies and to consider the impact of their actions? I think based on that "logic" we should also not penalize drunk drivers etc. If they kill someone/ a pet; that person/pet should have not been such a nuisance and inconvenience. That poor drunk driver that is a victim of the person they run over. OMG IT's horrendous. What will society come to if we don't protect people that just wanna have fun???

When I was a teenager in 1983 my mother and aunt took us kids to cemeteries to show us why Roe the other legislation was so important.
We saw many gravestones of women who died in childbirth in their 20s after bearing 10 or 12 children. All from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s.
That's a big part of what the sixties "revolution" was about: not being home bound and pregnant over and over until she died.

The fact that these justices still get to sit and make sweeping decisions for other people after flat-out lying in their confirmation hearings (aka committing perjury) is maddening. The fact that Clarence Thomas still gets to act as though he's fit to serve when his wife was caught engaging in sedition, which should completely disqualify him as an unbiased judge. My ex's brother and sister in law had to make the the worst choice in their lives when they decided, with the DR, to terminate the pregnancy. They were told that their son would suffer severe physical defects and more than likely wouldn't have lived through the birthing process. If he did survive his life would have been nothing but pain and nothing could be done to fix him. I'm not pro life (more like pro choice) but I would NEVER put my own standards on a life or situation that isn't my own. To think that a group of old men can tell a woman what do with her own body is beyond vile and this move screams of trying to control us. Those same men want to point their fingers at women who "didn't need to have sex" but where are the men because we don't get pregnant by ourselves. Where are the laws for the women who are left to deal with the fallout and have limited to no resources to make sure that that the child they were forced to bring to term has a good start in life? Now new generations of "free" women are going to be forced to fight all over again. Please stay strong and don't let this bullshit stand because I'm more than just a breeding machine because I was born with a uterus.

Everyone was lied to. Everyone was brainwashed from birth with the despicable lie that "Marijuana will destroy America." Now, the film has been public for over 30 years and there's an official US government link to the video, but no one notices because a lifetime of drug war propaganda has made them incapable of thinking.

Or imagine the unthinkable - you're soon to be a new parent only to be told by the doctors that your partner's pregnancy has become unviable, and when carried to term, your unborn child will likely die during childbirth, but worse yet, your partner could also die from severe complications. Actually, abortion was commonly accepted in colonial America and the early nation.

Years later as a married woman going through it again because my then husband didn’t want to have children, in the procedure room I told the doctor I changed my mind. He said sorry your husband signed the form-he pushed me back down the nurse injected me in my IV as I protested. I woke up hysterical. Going after birth control next is terrifying. Not least because, quite aside from the entire dismantling of a woman’s right to her own body and sexual choices, medical practice uses the pill for a whole range of gynaecological conditions, including endometriosis, hormone imbalances and menorrhagia. Mostly because no one has bothered trying to come up with something else. If you have endo and want kids, you either suffer with the pain and haemorrhaging while you try to get pregnant, or you go on the pill and don’t have kids, those are your choices. I live in Ireland, and I never thought women here would have more rights than they do in the US. We fought tooth and nail to repeal the 8th and things still are not 100% there, but I feel so much safer here than I would in the US. My heart is broken for you.

It's often overlooked that birth contraceptives can have other uses. I couldn't take the pill, because it made my premenstrual migraines worse, but I did take the mini pill for a short time because I could tolerate it. There are so many options now available but to think that women in the US might have all of that taken away so easily.... Just being able to regulate your cycle helps women get on with their lifes and jobs, but I guess these zealots want them all barefoot and pregnant, chained to the kitchen sink for their entire fertile lives.

I don't think they'd get enough support to get rid of *most* forms of birth control, on a national level. However some states have already tried banning IUD's and morning after pills citing the life begins at conception and one of the ways they can function is to prevent implantation. Which while hard to fully study, research figures conservatively 10-40% of fertilized eggs don't implant. Beyond that 10-50% or more will miscarry. I wonder if they'll tell older women they shouldn't get pregnant, as the likelihood of miscarriage increases with age.

God, this whole thing is fucked up. First abortion, and then the mere idea of birth control? What are they even thinking? What right do they have to control something so personal? So now, not only can they decide that if an accidental pregnancy happens nothing can be done, but now they don't want people to be able to be safe if they DO have sex with their lover? This nation is fucked.

The irony was abortion was probably the most common medical procedure when the nation was founded, and it was probably one of the few medical procedures, back in that time, where there was sound medical practices and understanding. It was the common belief among Christians, and even the Catholic Church, at the time that life did not begin until the mother felt the first kick, and if a woman wanted an abortion, it wasn't like she couldn't lie about feeling a kick, so it wasn't much of an obstacle.
Hell, even Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormons, and a man who believed in faith healing rather than doctors, had a private abortionist who carried out abortions for pregnant women in his church, John C Bennet. When Bennet published a story about abortions he carried out to protect Smith's reputation, Smith burnt the printing press, was arrested and taken to Carthage Jail, where he was attacked and killed by a lynch mob, so it is kind of strange that Mormons are unfamiliar with that part of their history.

I dont think it is correct to assume that abortion was a big issue in either medieval times or Roman times. In general this wasn't a big issue until the evangelical movements made it one. Ben Franklin, for instance, wrote a book which providied (among other things) advice on how to get abortions safely (based on available medical knowledge of the times). Actually in ancient Rome men would force women to kill their children in infanticide by leaving them out in the sun so they die of exposure. Other methods, such as abortion by starving oneself, in order to produce stillbirths, were also used. Usually this was because the man wanted only male sons. Christianity altered this by affording woman and their children human dignity. For this reason, many woman converted to Christianity(St Helen, St Monica) and slowly converted the state of the Roman Empire. Human dignity went from being a man's choice, to a protected good, and then to being a woman's choice in our modern times.

    • @En-Jon-eer

@@supercoolbrian you got a source for that? Sure sounds like christian propaganda to me.
Edit:. To be clear the thing I want backed up is the idea that men, on a regular basis, would FORCE women to kill their children. Methods are irrelevant and law of that time is pretty clear that abortion wasn't a crime.
Sidenote edit: I do find it funny that someone is claiming that Christianity gave women human dignity. Christianity which says women are less than men. Christianity which says that a woman who is raped gets to 'punish' the rapist by requiring them to pay the woman's father a dowry and then the rapist is 'forced' to marry the raped woman. Yeah.... Christianity is great at valuing women and isn't misogynistic at all *eye roll* I'm sure Christianity was a huge improvement to what they had before that in ancient Rome (in case you couldn't tell that's supposed to be dripping in sarcasm).

He was obliged to carry (the newborn) child before certain men at a place called Lesche; these men were some of the elders of the tribe to which the child belonged; their business was to carefully view the infant, and, if they found it stout and well made, they gave order for its rearing and allotted to it one of the nine thousand shares of land above mentioned for its maintenance, but, if they found it puny and ill-shaped, ordered it to be taken to what was called the Apothetae (“depository”), a (large cave) under Mt. Taygetus (in the Peloponnese); as thinking it neither for the good of the child itself, nor for the public interest, that it should be brought up, if it did not, from the very outset, appear to be healthy and vigorous.”

By virtue of mentioning that old elders made the decision, its pretty clear women didn't have a choice in Roman Sparta. By expressing surprise that the father couldn't make the choice, its pretty clear that it was the norm in Roman law for the father to make the choice. All this is written of course by men. I'd be more surprised if you had proof that abortion was afforded specifically to a woman. In ancient Greece, Aristotle spoke about it as a matter compulsory law.
“As to exposing or rearing the children born, let there be a law that no deformed child shall be reared; but on the ground of number of children, if the regular customs hinder any of those born being exposed, there must be a limit fixed to the procreation of offspring, and if any people have a child as a result of intercourse in contravention of these regulations, abortion must be practiced on it (the child).”

When a US Court can overturn their own rulings years later, democracy and the court of law mean nothing. Such a sad state of affairs.

    • @JM-hn7ju

Let's back up a second. The SC ruling was a limit on the legislator (or Democracy). It was a flawed way to enable rights for abortion, it wasn't democratic. No other country that has abortion allowed needed a SC ruling.
I would urge everyone solve this by electing pro choice members. Make it law, you only think you can't solve it democratically is because people are lying to you. They want you to feel dis-empowered.
