      I agree and am wondering if a 4' x 8' sheet will fit because the back of the bed is angling inward (Edit, I found a picture showing a 4' x 8' sheet with measurements in the bed). I would have preferred the back of the bed to be straight with the same function. Cool and interesting vehicle either way.

    I'm buying one; it is immensely practical. The F150 was a waste of R&D because they had to keep it looking like a "pick up"; GM and Rivian went down the same hole. The Canoo truck is a fresh design effort that didn't have to look like a pick up. It just had to function like one.
    Its only down side is when can they deliver the vehicles in greater numbers.

    I fell in with the Canoo pickup the first time I laid eyes on it. The design is brilliant, safe and practical. I left my deposit as soon as the reservations were released. It’s basically a 21st century version of a 1950/1960’s air-cooled VW pickup truck.

    The structure at the front is not waisted space. It's critical to your safety and it's very useful to most of us.
    All that structure at the front saves lives and prevents massive injuries.
    You need that structure, that is unless you want to use your legs as the energy absorbing structures in a crash.
    Plus, it's a lockable storage area that can't be viewed from the outside. That's tremendously valuable to most of us.
    It's a weatherproof storage area. That's also extremely valuable to most of us.

    Be curious to see the safety crash test with front collisions. Crumple zones and such often are used to protect occupants. Perhaps the occupant cell itself is a protective caccon? Some large lorries have the driver sitting right on the windshield and collisions can be rather gruesome. Let's see how the regulatory crash tests perform. But I agree looks quite practical.

    • @GrigoriZhukov
      @GrigoriZhukov 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      While very cab forward, the driver is still mostly behind the front wheel.

    • @Pab-B
      @Pab-B 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My concern too. Humans don't take to crumpling very well. Although a traditional truck may look outdated, I'd rather have the extra space between me and whatever is trying to kill me. "The number one most important consideration" as Sam says is safety of the occupants.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly my idea. Crumple zones can really save your life. I literally saw a clip of a dude in a police chase smash head first into a parked semi at clearly over 100mph. Front end completely obliterated, the dude jumped right out of the car and started running. That's impressive. I mean, he's a criminal but still it does show the effects of crumple zones. And the bigger they are the more they can protect you.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LPSCaitelyn I just looked it up online. Their main test for the front end was a 30mph straight on crash. In that one the entire front end pancakes to right into the dash. That'd be a fairly freaky experience to see how close that is to you. And again, that was a perfect head on crash. This effect would be worse if they somehow crash into a concrete pylon or crash into a car pulling out in front of them.
      I think it does look really cool, but I personally don't see it being a good idea for myself. Plus it also uses drive by wire which means you lose all steering if you lose power at speed. No pulling over to the side of the road. Drive by wire has continued to be an iffy idea for consumer vehicles because of this but brands continue to desire it as it means cheaper parts and the ability to make a self driving car without moving the wheel or making adaptive steering without extra gearing like Tesla uses.
      Again, it's a really unique vehicle and I love the goals of the brand, I just don't see it as a strong consideration for myself. The easy view of the ground for example is great, but so did the Oldsmobile Silhouette and we all know what happened to Oldsmobile. Oddly my parents actually has one when I was a baby. What a weird vehicle.

      There is nothing "cab forward" about this. You need to look at older models of Toyota HiAce to see what that term means, the driver sits over the front wheels.
      The Canoo is just a standard "cab backward" design they are trying to hide with the oversized windscreen. And by doing that they have compromised one of the best features of EV pickups, the massive "frunk". Canoo still has it, but it's way smaller than the frunks on for example Rivian or F-150 Lightning.
      In exchange for the large frunk the Canoo has a large wasted space in the front of the cab. You can't use it for storage because of crash safety reasons unless you can tie them down securely, and even if the luggage is secured it will be inconvenient to access since the windscreen can't be opened.

      I don't tend to like Tesla, but I do think the Cybertruck is more innovative. It is usually a full stainless steel body for example. The only other car to ever do it hasn't been sold in decades. The car also is supposed to have a solar cover for the rear, the extra durable windows (though personally that may be a bad thing for personal cars), and a full marble dash. Again, I have little interest in Tesla and honestly think the Cybertruck looks laughable, but I do think it's technically more innovative.

    The frunk on the F150 Lightning is highly practical and desirable for those wanting a work truck plus without it, passenger safety in crash performance must be harder to achieve. I see this new pickup as providing alternative choices so customers can choose what will work best for them in their work-usage patterns, but not a “F150 lightning Killer” per se.

    A lot of old companies aren't innovating. They're repackaging what we already know back to us as electric. They're too big to risk anything new. Too scared to fail. The real innovators are the new companies like these but they can't do it alone. I think the big companies should find one of the smaller ones and back them up and be reborn through them.

    Sam, I've had 4 Kombies and know every nut and bolt on em. I used to drive em everywhere (plenty of off-road too) and never had overheating issues. If your parent's Kombi was overheating it was most likely because of poor tuning (timing is critical) not a rear mounted motor. I'd be looking at your parent's mechanic, not the design.
    The Kombi's motor and it's layout was based on VW's WW2 Kubelwagen - those things were used in all Germany's theatres of operation from summer in the North African desert to winters on the Russian steppes. The air cooled rear mounted motor was never a problem under those conditions.
    I think I'd like the van version of that EV! Mind you, the low range is a deal breaker.

    All Canoo vehicles have the driver seating position way further back than you would initially imagine, mostly for safety reasons, as it wouldn't pass current US crash tests otherwise. That invalidates most of what you're saying but it is a cool truck and it's got a 2 foot bed extender that helps with size when needed and their front lower street view window helps the driveability of it. The length you quote for the Lightening you're comparing to the Canoo before the bed is extended, plus the Canoo is basically a single cab while the Lightning has much more passenger space. Canoo pickup back row passengers will be cramped.

    I wonder how safe the "forward control" shape with no bonnet is in a collision. I think of the bonnet as a crumple zone to protect the passenger area. Some bonnets are too long, Mazda particularly. With a transverse four packed in there they look as if they have a straight six. My 2014 Nissan Pulsar has a bonnet just long enough for the transverse engine and the passenger compartment takes up most of the length of the car. It has more legroom for four adults than the Commodore I used to drive. I think an EV with a crumple zone bonnet containing necessary equipment is the right design for most vehicles.

    Sounds pretty good. I like the cab forward design. Still a bit too large for me. Electrify my generation 1, 2001 Toyota Tacoma and I will be happy. Thank you for your attempts to use empirical units. I am pretty good about switching US to metric but, still takes a few seconds and I have to pause the vid and think a bit.
    Not that it matters but, it is an interesting difference. In the US we tend to think in feet and inches. A bed length of 72 inches is 6 feet which is a very common size here. 96 inches is8 feet which as another fellow commented was 8 feet and would fit a 4 by 8 foot sheet of plywood which is also standard ceiling height. The Ford you mentioned is 5 feet 6 inches or five and a half feet whereas the truck you were describing was 6 feet. For instance describing my wife I would say she is 5 foot 4 inches, written 5’4”, pronounced five four. I would never say 64 inches.
    I know the US system is a crazy system and I wished the US adopted the metric system a very long time ago. But, when you grow up with it you think in it. And don’t get we started on fractional inches instead of decimal inches that is it’s own nightmare.

    Cars and trucks have those big bonnets for safety regs. Physics did not take vacation, you still need the crumple zone. EU regs require the nose to be a standard height so that when you hit someone they go over the hood and not under the car. You have a roll over requirement that specifies that the vehicle roof must not collapse into the passenger during a roll over or when the vehicle lands on it's roof.

The idea they have is great and as a Aptera client I completely agree with the big bonuses of lighter vehicles., one thing I think could be a lesson to for the design is that about 67% of all power used for vehicles is usually fighting their aerodynamic drag. I believe that Canoo shape is likely to be as aerodynamic as my Jeep Wrangler :)

    The Cybertruck is about destroying the very idea of a un-truck-like pickup. It is comparable in some ways to (but not in others) to a vehicle built for demanding/harsh environments like the Humvee. And, it also completely eliminates dependence on unnecessary conventional design concepts (from ICE vehicles or other EVs) that get in the way of its purpose - I note in particular the near elimination of the hood/bonnet section of the vehicle. Despite differences the Canoo was definitely conceived along lines similar to the Cybertruck albeit in a less bomb proof imagining of the basic idea.
