    S33 is really one of the best cable modems out there. Arris knocked this one out of the park. Hoping my next upgrade is fiber though !

      Will be interesting when Comcast updates their service in the next two years. Might not need fibre once the DOCSIS 4 modems hit the market. Fibre with the symmetrical service would be really nice.

      Why do you say that? Did you see a bunch of comparison tests somewhere? Love my tm822 but this 33 is waaay hotter which usually means, less reliable, and is no faster than my Arris 822 which never faltered, I just thought I'd try faster

    Yeah, Xfinity just informed me my 4 year old modem I purchased has an obsolete certificate and I need to replace the modem before mid-March, when they pump up the transfer speeds. I already have my own router so I just want to plug in a modem and then hopefully be good to go. This is on their approved list so it's a real no-brainer to get it.

    Good review on the hardware side, but missing software/menu info, if you have session2 to cover parental control, devices control with time/date schedule (to disable on enable on a specific address), and content filtering to block adult content or shopping, gaming, etc... and these settings, I would do it through Modem then through the router, so I wish you cover next time

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hi FA. the arris is only a cable modem so no features like parental control nor the other features you mention. for those features you would need to add a router with them. check out our orbi router review to learn more. plus many of the latest routers from orbi or tp-link Deco have them.

    • @TrueFactBoston

      @@Appmyhome even though if I use the router as a bridge / AP, that will apply the modem rules/features such as DMZ, NAT, etc, I saw that with the Verizon Modem router that I am using it as a modem and Netgear as AP, and I'm configuring the parental control on the Verizon modem, not Netgear. I believe because Verizon include 2 in one Modem and Router, that's why they have all features in it, but I was asking if Arris has some features like Parental control, and they should just in case someone is using only the modem without a router (in case using it with unmanaged configurable switch)

    I have two quick questions:
    1) Y'all said that you bought a router that also had a 2.5GB Ethernet port in order to match this Arris modem. If I were to buy a router that didn't have a 2.5GB Ethernet port would I be getting less wifi speed? Should I buy a router with an ethernet port that matches the modem I bought?
    2) Y'all said that we would have to buy another IP address from our Internet Service Provider if we were to use two ethernet ports on this Arris modem. Is that the case with all modems? To only use one ethernet port instead of two?

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keep in mind the way it works is your laptops/phones/etc. talks to the router (on ramp) and the cable modem is the highway to the internet.
      1 - Basically if you get a router that doesn't have a 2.5 gb/s port and your cable modem has a 2.5 port your routers Wi-Fi and ethernet speeds to the internet will be limited to the routers ethernet port speed (how fast your Wi-Fi speed is is also dependent on the router Wi-Fi spec). So if you get a router with the 1 gb/s port to the cable modem that's the max. Keep in mind though that routers Wi-Fi speed is another spec you need to watch for in the router. So we think best bet is to get a router and a cable modem that both support 2.5. You will also need to see what speed your ISP supports, ours, Xfinity has a max download speed of 1.4 gb/s.
      2 - Many cable modems only have one ethernet port to the router, the Arris model we got has two. Your ISP typically provides one Internet address to the cable modem/you. If you want two then you need to check with them if they provide that, usually at a fee. If you are just looking for additional ethernet ports the best bet is to get a router that has multiple ports that you connect to and then the router will send them through to the cable modem to the internet. Think of the cable modem as providing the highways to the internet, normally its one highway, with Arris they provide a way to have two, and the router as the on ramps.
      Hope this made sense.

    I have a nighthawk 6E router with a 2.5 port but when I plug into that port I get no Wi-Fi and when I go into settings on the router and switch to multi gig 2.5 then I really get nothing. I have to have it on 1gig why is that? The modem is spectrum 2.5 modem and I just bought the surfboard S33 but thinking about returning it because spectrum offers free modem and it has 1 2.5gbt port

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, for the S33 the 2.5 port is to connect to your Router, so isn't used for connecting directly devices. Like us we connected it to the Orbi 2.5 Port. There are new Orbi routers that have two 2.5 ports, in that case you'd be able to use it. Of course a lot depends on what performance Spectrum is providing you.

    I have Verizon FIOS, and pay for voice, but don't use it. Would this still work for me, or would you guys not know? I'd hate to have to call Verizon FIOS, haven't had the best service, for the last 8 years despite renting their " best" modem/router all in 1 box.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't know the answer, so would be best to call them. I know folks that have fiber and usually that requires a special modem. The Arris is for cable service. You say you have their combo modem/router. So a question to ask Verizon is "can I just use your box as the modem and get my own router?" You may have seen our Orbi router review which would likely help performance wise if you end up using their modem.

    Hello, would you still go with this same setup today? Surfboard s33 & an orbi? Any news on docsis 4? I have cable internet comcast. @Appmyhome  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      just starting to see some stories on docsis 4. it certainly will be a game changer. when of course is the big question. upload speeds seems to be the big draw.
      as for s33/orbi. I would still go there though would pick up the newer 6e model orbi.
      erro is likely nice but buying because of alexa isn’t needed. plus if I read correctly the alexa only provides 100 mb connection and the orbi mesh, and frankly the erro mesh would likely have you covered anyway.
      maybe start with the s33 and see if it breaths new life into you amplify then get the orbi.

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be our recommendation. We upgraded from the 8200 and it made a big difference. Then if you pick up a faster router (and internet service) you can take advantage of it.
      What router do you currently have? We did a review recently on the Orbi WiFi 6 router and it is fast. So now our setup is the S33 and the Orbi RBK853.

    What's 2x2

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It refers to the number of channels for data transferring upstream and downstream. The Modem handles both DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1. So it has 32 downstream x 8 upstream DOCSIS 3.0 bonded channels and 2 downstream x 2 upstream OFDM DOCSIS 3 1 channels. Hence for DOCSIS 3.1 it is 2x2.

      Is this modem good for google nest WiFi
      500 mbps internet speed

    • @Appmyhome
      @Appmyhome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what modem you currently have and what your ISP is providing.. If your current modem is old this likely will help. certainly would be useful if you ever decide to update to gig service. as for the wifi speeds you'd need a faster model, like a wifi 6 or 6e router to see wifi improvements over the 500 you have. Keep in mind if you have faster internet service and are directly connected, not the wifi but the eNet connections, you might benefit there. Again, it all depends on what speed service you presently have.
