Osgood is named as a tribute to a much loved character from a 3rd doctor story called the daemons, he was a sort of a scientific advisor type for the brigadier. The episode with david tennant and the flying bus called planet of the dead had another tribute to the same character with that comedy scientist who helped the bus return...

@@Wolf6119 Gatiss was actually gonna do a sequel to this episode (which actually would have been a prequel) for his Series 10 episode but then he didn't and did the episode we got instead for an unknown reason. He'll probably never do it now because he's seemingly finished writing episodes for the show after Moffatt left.

I honestly really liked this episode when it first came out. Mostly just because I like the look of the Sandmen. That's all you need to sell me, a cool monster.

Seeing Reece Shearsmith in this episode makes me want to recommend for you guys to watch ‘Inside number 9’. It’s an excellent BBC Anthology series which has a great blend of creepy and comedy. It out performs Black Mirror in many episodes, in my opinion.

Well, the episode itself wasn't worth much, but damn if the subsequent discussion from you guys wasn't hilarious. Sounding like a bunch of geriatrics complaining about tiredness and sleep, but it was honestly soooo relatable lmao.

I must be one of the very few who actually enjoy this episode.
The basic idea is pretty neat, the execution quite good and the twist is efficient ! Particularly love the very subtle fact that we get Clara's PoV after she goes in the machine. Subtle and quite scary. And the overall vibe is quite good. I admit I'm a sucker for found footage stories, and this one has a nice plot twist to it in the end.
Not the best episode of the show, but not sure why it gets so much hatred ! I really think it's only because it's an average episode stuck in the middle of an otherwse amazing series, but that's all !
I don't really dislike it either. I just think it's the weakest episode in an outstanding season.
I enjoy this one a lot. As the whole episode is constructed by the villain, I love how you dont really know what happens.
It's fucking boring just like the rest of Series 9 (apart from Ep 11).
Yeah I think the only reason this episode is hated so much is because people don't understand it. That isn't their fault, though, because of the mediocre execution and the cliffhanger that was never continued. I like to think that, in the end, the Doctor dismantled all of the Morpheus technology, and took down the broadcast message while he was at it, since that was the only threat. After all, everything else was merely for show, fabricated as an excuse for people to watch the message, as stated by the scientist/dust monster at the end.
I enjoy it too. There's some interesting ideas (compressed sleep and dreams is a great idea), it's the only found-footage episode we have in the show. It doesn't quite work overall, but it's enjoyable enough for me

Was never sure why people didn't like this episode. I like it when Doctor Who tries to do its own unique take on other genres (found footage, in this case) and I like that the villain won. I'd go as far as to say it's my third favourite episode of season 9.
I'm repeating myself here, but if you enjoy angry Peter Capaldi you really should check out The Thick of It.
Since you were talking about Elves and their sleeping habits - yes, DnD Elves are indeed inspired by Tolkien Elves in many ways, including this.
Tolkien's Elves don't sleep like humans do, and they don't need a lot rest in general; they let their minds wander the strange paths of Elven reverie while their eyes remain open and their bodies, if need be, active.
And since you mentioned Legolas too, let's use him to give an example - it was never mentioned in the movies, but we actually see him do this in the books.
While the Three Hunters are pursuing the orc horde that took Merry and Pippin, several days pass. Aragorn and Gimli need to sleep during the night, so Legolas keeps watch over them as they rest (though he is extremely frustrated about all the time this costs them, since the orcs keep moving for the most part).
Legolas himself rests during the day - he lets his mind fall into reverie while his body keeps running and stays mostly aware.
Had he been on his own or with a group of fellow Elves, he would have been able to catch up to that orc troupe long before they ever reached Fângorn Forest.

Personally I loved this episode. So different to everything else.
A lot of these episodes kept me up at night as a kid. Still love the show
I'm never upset when Blind Wave goes on their tangents during discussions. But for this episode especially, I'm glad they spent it talking about sleep
Between series 9 and 10, I’d love for them to do some reactions to other work by Capaldi - that “Someone You Loved” video by Lewis Capaldi; The Thick of It, etc.
The reason why you make you later and feel worse than when you woke up earlier is because we have 90 min cycles in which we go throughj the different stages of sleep, if you wake up at the deeper stages they you will be more tired becuse your body hasn't completed the cycle.
There are apps that can monitor your sleep cycle and wake you up at the right time. It's worked wonders for me.

so this is the great divide of the doctor who's.
Reese Shearsmith and Mark Gatiss used to be part of a comedy troupe that sometimes went by the name of Legz Akimbo.
They wrote comedy classics like League of Gentlemen and Psychoville.
Shearsmith is mostly known for being one of the writers and constant actors of Inside No. 9, together with the third Legz Akimbo member Steve Pemberton (who appeared in the Doctor Who episode Silence in the Library).
You can see a lot of Legz Akimbo in that show, Doctor Who and Sherlock.
This episode was basically Gatiss and Shearsmith combining their writing styles to create a Doctor Who/Inside No. 9 hybrid episode.
I literally don't even remember ever watching this episode and if I did, I probably got frustated like halfway through

This is easily the most different Doctor Who episode over 11 “new” series. Found footage, the Doctor loses. Rassmussen was also played by the same actor as the 2nd Doctor in “Adventure in Space and Time.”
Indeed, Reece Shearsmith who was in a UK radio/TV comedy* group called the League of Gentlemen with none other than Mark Gatiss (co-creator of 'Sherlock' with Steven Moffat who's written several Who episodes - ETA: including this one, d'oh ;) - and also acted in a couple). CAL's "entitled rich guy" descendant from 'Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead' was played by another member of the group, Steve Pemberton.
* I say 'comedy' but it's very much of the dark and twisted type
So close to being an amazing episode, and yet so far away.
Reece Shearsmith plays the main character in this & he was Pat Troughton in the 50th anniversary Dr Who drama 'Adventure in Time & Space', written - like this episode - by Mark Gatiss (he plays the soldier in Twice upon A Time). Gatiss & Shearsmith are part of the 'League of Gentlemen' which started out on BBC radio and moved to TV. It's a surreal dark comedy about the residents of a village called Royston Vasey.
Interesting coincidence: In this episode Clara said “Morpheus?Named after the god of dreams?”Then A few years later Jenna was cast in Sandman

fun fact: This is the first episode of doctor who to feature a transgender actor. I forget which one, but one of the side characters is. just thought that was interesting
It's the Grunt, actually, played by comedian Bethany Black (who is apparently a big Doctor Who fan). I find it a bit odd that the show is celebrating "the first trans actor in DW" and then casting that actor as a clone that's treated by some characters as subhuman, but apparently Black enjoyed the experience. And her character does have a great ending.

So it comes to this... Now, I don't hate 'Sleep No More' as much as everybody else does, but I will agree that it's just not that good. I like the "found footage" concept, I like the almost claustrophobic set design, the subtle electronic music was creepy, and as ever, Capaldi kills it: “Sleep isn’t just a function. It’s blessed. Every night we dive deep into that inky pool, deep into the arms of Morpheus. Every morning we wipe the sleep from our eyes and that keeps us safe. Safe from the monsters inside.” However, the episode lacked any momentum or pace, the Sandmen are a ridiculous concept to swallow even by Doctor Who standards (mutated eye sleep! Really!?), and as much as I love Reese Shearsmith as an actor, he acts as though he's still in an episode of Inside No. 9. When it comes to Mark Gatiss episodes, I'm afraid this goes on the same pile as 'The Idiot's Lantern', 'Night Terrors' and 'Victory of the Daleks'. Plus, he was even thinking about doing a sequel/prequel to this! Admired the ambition, but the execution leaves something to be desired.
Yeah I've always enjoyed this episode. I love the atmosphere of it. The Doctor looking into the camera every so often, not looking like a performance. This episode could have been incredible, instead its just cool.
As terrible as this episode is, it's considered a masterpiece in comparison to series 11 as a whole.

Am I the only one who likes this episode. I mean first watch the found footage style irked me but on rewatch its actually quite creepy. Not to mention its a story where the Doctor loses for once which I actually enjoy seeing every now and then. I hope to get a sequel some day. Not a solution but something like Bad Wolf was the the long game. Where they return to this time period and here about the devastation it caused.

I may have liked this one even less than Love and Monsters. I like Gatiss' scripts normally. But this one... dang it was off. It had some interesting ideas but somehow didn't hold together. Maybe a novelization of this would have worked better. I am VERY excited for upcoming episodes. I'm not on Patreon but I may have to join just to see the reaction to THAT episode.

I liked this episode. I liked when shows at least try something different. They make you have to watch it.

Just having a go, mate! 🤣 I heard what you said later, about cycling out the melatonin. The sentence, without that context, just came across as quite silly.
And *Calvin,* if your legs itch and keep you awake sometimes, remove one or both of them after you've gone to bed. You're modular. We all know that.
I like to think this episode was made intentionally boring to make sure you hand sand in your eye by the end of it.
Doctor who had so many brilliant storylines for intelligent people... This isn't one of them. Occasionally they misstep. It happens. Ah well, next episode gonna be awesome.
