Is 'Sleep No More' Really THAT Bad?

  • 'Sleep No More' is widely hated by Doctor Who fans. But does Doctor Who's only found footage episode really deserve this negative reputation?
    Every now and then, there is a Doctor Who episode that doesn't quite hit the mark. From the moon being an egg to sentient paving slabs, these episodes are infamously despised. But do these episodes deserve to be held in such low regard? In this video essay series, I shall be giving some of these episodes a second chance and seeing if they can be redeemed.

      Yeah that's a good point. I've always thought it could be revisited in a future episode since it's implied the signal got out at the end of Sleep No More. Maybe that follow-up could focus more on the sleep machines?

      I liked the feeling of being trapped there with it, and also trying to prevent it reaching society in general.
      A second episode with them in, and no one rising what happened on the space station would then have more tension because we know what they're up to, and maybe we could see our heroes try to warn people but no one is listening.
      Perhaps they could even lose in the end and humans would have to seal off the colony it has infected it something.

    I LOVE how no one sees this is as a secret episode of inside no.9. It's got all the hallmarks! One of the main writers starring as a character in-episode, the redherring disguised by the premise, the use of a unique media to portray the episode.
    Even the placement of the episode, the titlecardless intro and the ending all show the .50 cal sized bullet giveaway this isn't really a doctor who episode.

    I didn't like this one the first time I watched it, but driving a theme on the way the business world makes sleep deprivation into an ambition contest is one of the hottest takes I've ever seen on Doctor Who and everyone who has ever tweeted about "the hustle" should be required to see it.

    • @HarboWholmes
      @HarboWholmes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Definitely! The scary thing is that if a pod of the type was made in real life, it would be hugely popular because of how it cuts out sleep times. That'd mean companies create policies of mandatory use and you have to work even more to earn your paycheck. It's a full on cyberpunk dystopia

    • @myfisharmyisever-growing7393
      @myfisharmyisever-growing7393 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@HarboWholmes Yes! Dystopia is definitely the right word. I think what drove me to finally appreciate this episode was Doctor Who's history of flirting with dystopia to make thoughtful observations about human beings. The Long Game (which I really enjoyed your video about) is part of that tradition, as is The Beast Below, The Rebel Flesh, The Age of Steel, and Planet of the Ood. They're not always bright and fun-which is the kind of episode that drew me to Who in the first place-but the joy of adventure can't always sustain a massive series like Doctor Who, and once you've been watching for a while, the episodes that confront unpleasant subjects in dark futures are the ones that keep you watching. I'll definitely have to give this one a re-watch: I didn't even notice the interesting way Rasmussen frames the episode the second way through!

    • @HarboWholmes
      @HarboWholmes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Doctor Who always does great dystopian works. It's crazy how dark and sociopolitical it can get without being too obvious about it. The dystopian subtext is definitely the best part about some of the episodes you listed. Episodes like Beast Below really don't get enough credit.

    I really like what the episode is trying to go for, and the narrative and world building are solid enough, but the pacing is weird and the sleep monsters weren't thought through well enough. Maybe if the lack of natural sleep and something done to the brain via the machine, the space station was haunted by manifestations of the dreams and nightmares that were never dreamt. Give us reasons to care about the characters and make the monster of the week a bit higher concept scifi

      @willbaker6532 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tuele4302 yeah but my point is it reflects the quality of the series so far up to that episode or prior series rather than the quality of the actual episode.
      For example. I watched Dr who regularly until capaldis first series. I watched all the way up to and including "in the forest of the night" which to me was one of the worst tv episodes I've ever seen. So that means I did not watch "Dark Water" or "Death in heaven" as I gave up on the show
      So my total contribution to viewing figures is "1" for the forest and "0" for the finale
      So if you were to use viewing figures as a measurement of quality of the episode then from my viewership you would assume I thought the forest was better than the finale because there were more views in my household of the forest than the finale
      When in reality it was that i thought the forest and a number of episodes throughout the series were so bad that I just stopped bothering to watch it.
      Tooth and claw was the highest viewed episode of Series 2 and to this day is the highest viewed non opening/finale/special of Dr who since it restarted in 2005!!!
      Is it the best episode of the series? Probably not.
      Did it have a high view count as it was on tv immediately after an FA Cup semifinal between Chelsea and Liverpool which was on the same channel so views were counted for people who didn't change the channel after the football ended? Most likely

    Speaking purely as a blind viewer-yes, I am aware of the irony-I love this episode for a few reasons. One, the audio design was awesome since if you listen with headphones, you can sort of tell where everyone is in relation to who we're looking out of. Two, I'd never seen any found footage films, since I don't really watch that genre, so I didn't feel burnt out on it. In fact, I didn't even know it was found footage until I saw videos on why people don't like it. I only feel it suffered from not being given it's two part glory like it should have. And three, I liked the social commentary.

    I mean, I can get some complaints about it being poorly lit. Didn't help that it came at a time when movies like Fan4stic and Suicide Squad were about to appear where people thought the indoor scenes were poorly lit.
    Honestly, this episode reminds me of the 2000's movie The last horror movie where the ending is that all the victims were people who had watched the video and that you, the viewer, are next.
    Found Footage is a genre of horror that is cheap to make but easy to do right or dirty. You just need to follow a few rules.
    1) Your cameraman is a character. They can be taken out and/or suffer from the outbreak.
    2) How did your film get found? Apollo18 was set on the moon so finding the footage would be difficult. Lake Mungo and Mockumentaries have an easy time with this.
    3) Who is editing it? In movies like Paranormal activity, there's a lot of editing but it makes you wonder who it's being edited for. It's a similar question to "Why are the cameras on?" Sometimes you can get away with it if it's to show alternate perspectives like in the Rec series and "As above, so Below."
    Also, to those who are wondering why the Sandman song is used, can I ask why you're not asking about why the pods are named after a minor God in Greek Mythology?

    I think a two part-,er would have been good. It would have followed the format of the rest of the season and felt less out of place. Here's what they could have done. Second episode focuses on it's spread. Ditch the found footage, (even though I agree it was cool.) It's spread to humanity. The doctor and Clara and trying to figure out what has happened. They go about five years into the future. They do some normal doctor who stuff, solve the mystery in a "dramatic irony," kind of way. Then when all seems lost, Clara sacrifices herself. This eliminates the need for face the Raven, and sets up a possibly better death. I personally think you should have left her dead anyway, but if they want the could still bring her back with the same method used in the finale. There we are. All two part episodes.

    Yes! And, placed as it is, it's a forewarning that the Doctor not only can fail, but has failed, and will fail again (Face the Raven, and Hell bent), because he is NOT a superhero; he is NOT a magical savior of the universe; he is NOT an infallible genius. He's a madman in a box . . . we need reminders of this from time to time. This was a great set-up for the desperate fuck-up of Face the Raven. As an older fan, I really appreciate the way this series so often reminds us, in the midst of fantasy, of the harder truths o reality: you don't always win. You don't always know what the hell is going on around you. You also don't let that stop you, because your effort is what you have to give, even when it's confused and ineffective.
    Still, I'd love to see the second part of this story at some future time -- mebbe as a flashback? Or not. As it stands, I think it's a powerful piece in its own right -- just not soppy and sloppy enough for a kiddie series (but then, Capaldi brought us a grown up Doctor, just as promised by Moffat early on -- well, in everything but a normal sex life, but Missy explained all that in "The witch's Familiar".

    Why is there a Shintoism symbol on the sleep pods? Shintoists believe that humans aren't evil, and their maliciousness is due to an evil spirit possessing them. Does that symbolise the humans in the pods are being "purified", and the Sandmen are metaphors for "evil spirits" being cast out of them?
    Or am I just thinking too deeply into this?

    It's the first Doctor Who episode to genuinely freak me out. That Rassmussen twist at the end along with the lack of a genuine conclusion and the Doctor at an utter loss made this, at the time, my favorite episode of Series 9 (until Heaven Sent). It was definitely a highlight among highlights of my favorite series of Modern Who.

    I think an episode can be deemed good or bad depending on whether the viewer enjoys it or not. It can weave a clever plot together with a new spin on an old trope but if the audience finds it boring, if they're not invested in the characters or the premise they're not going to like it, they will be indifferent and their assessment will be that it's average at best. I believe that this is the problem with this episode. It can be great from the critical viewpoint of a superfan but the average viewer doesn't necessarily care about the subtle nuances and details like you do - and that isn't a criticism of yourself or the average fan.

    It’s weird, finding out (particularly via this channel - just insomuch as this is a channel I’ve enjoyed watching) that certain episodes are so heavily derided. I mean, that was quite an intro. I’m going to say the answer to the question you pose at the start is:
    No. Easily, no. Viewers out there-many humans, in fact-are quite excessively and unnecessarily hateful about a great many things.
    “Sleep No More” is a fun episode; and my only real problem with it is that it was the stand-alone episode in a season full of multi-episode stories-hearkening back to the good ol’ days of Classic Who.

    I had no idea this episode was disliked so much, I quite liked it. Then again, I'm pretty open to all doctor who episodes pre-chibnal becoming show runner. Not huge on found footage, but the story itself is fine, and I love the concept of the sleep machines. I feel like it could have benefited from being modeled after the long game or the series 6 silence arc, with some bigger alien force manipulating humanity into creating machines that benefit them somehow. Maybe something like the god/parasite from the rings of akhaten, who is feeding of the potential time spent sleeping? I dunno. Great concept, not huge on the monsters, and while I I like the story, it's not the best method of story telling

    Ngl, after watching the episode I never got the impression that it was about the moral gap between grunts and people, and for that to translate to a real world conflict. If anything I thought it was trying to have me catch on why the project was so deadly and why they should be in so much danger. But I was left confused instead. The rebel flesh did a fantastic job of setting a message, and other episodes did a good job of coming off as scary and psychological horror based. To me this felt like it was going for both so it landed in the middle of not really reaching either goal.
    But I’m not a writer so there is probably a lot of key points and details I missed that would have filled in those gaps in my head. But I can’t find many others, irl or online, that like this episode

    Sleep No More is basically Gatiss' way of paying homage to his old buddies, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. Nowadays, they are more known for their show Inside No 9, which has a very similar feel to Sleep No More.
    But wind the clock back a decade and a half, and they were in the same crew as Gatiss, making shows like The League of Gentlemen and Psychobitches under the name Legz Akimbo Theatre Company.
    Shearsmith is playing Rassmussen in Sleep No More and Pemberton played Strackman Lux in Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead.
    Gatiss has yet to appear in any episode of Inside No 9.

    I also remember that, at the time of its airing, some people were pissed at the placement of the episode in the series, because it came at a time when we knew Clara was going to leave soon and this was one of two episodes (the other being The Woman Who Lived) where little to no space was dedicated to her friendship and overall relationship with the Doctor so close to her departure. Especially to Clara fans, this felt like being robbed of precious time to address the most recent and final developments in their dynamic and being given something entirely different to what was perceived as important. They didn't want a one-shot episode, they wanted something bigger or at least something more closely related to the core of the relationship between Doctor and companion.

    3:18 I would be ok if the business part and "it's possible, so people have to do it" (cyberpunk themes) would be emphasized, rather than the standard "changing nature is bad", which is a trope i hate (Lazarus Experiment has the same problem).
    11:42 Zombified humans makes more sense, but it's still really cliché than the answer to "what health risks are caused by changing a person's organism" is "zombies!". Zombies are boring and ubiquitous.
