Hey George, thanks for making these videos, they have been very helpful. A couple of questions if I could. When using the HD500x with the EVH I assume the effects loop on the EVH has to be turned on correct? Also, again when using HD500x how do you have your volume, tone, gain etc on the 3 channels on the EVH. Forgot to mention these Questions pertain to the 4 cable method. Thanks for your time.
+rick duff Very glad the videos are helpful. On the 5150 the FX loop is automatically "on" if the normal Channel switcher is not plugged in. So with the Midi input plugged in you don't have to do anything if you want the FX loop on all the time. If you want to turn it off that is another matter. The instructions for the 5150 tell you how to do that with MIDI but I have not attempted that with the POD. My settings on the amp are: CH 1/2 - gain 6-7 Low 6 Mid 4 High 6 and I keep the volume on 4 and use the PODs master volume to control the overall volume. CH 3 gain 4 Low 6 Mid 4 Hgh 5 volume at 4 and presence at 2 I keep the resonance on the back at 5 These all change from time to time, but that's my starting point.

Something isn't working for me. I hooked it up there way it was said and it these same patches and looks as though the the pod is controlling the overall volume.... And the clean isn't clean... It's distorted. I thought the effects loop on the amp was screwed but I tried just a simple quadverb in the effects loop and it worked perfectly. I don't know... I'm at a loss
Ohhhh.... I'm using the 5150 III 50 watt.... Exactly the same way as you described... Which made perfect sense. I put all pedals in bypass on the pod and it still wasn't sounding right.
Thank you for the vids brother! How efficient is the channel switching with the 4cm & The pod 500. Any latency?? Pitfalls, any tone suckage occurring. Thinking about getting this set up. How do the amp models sound running them this way? Thank you so much for your time brother and Rock on man!!
I do not use the amp sims with this method. There are too many problems as it is. Using the amp sims you are stuck with the volume level of the patch. I always use the pre amp in the 5150. Yes there is tone suck, but that's why you have to use some method to even out the volume and it works good. The FX in the POD are pretty good, very comparable to real pedals. Channel switching is a huge relief because I can go from a clean sound with chorus, delay, and reverb to a dirty sound with a tube screamer, noise gate, and delay. However, if one switch on the POD gets moved it can screw up your sound and then you have a "what the hell is going on?" moment. If I was constantly using a lot of FX I would probably switch to the POD for convenience. Don't get me wrong, the FX sound good, but I like my pedalboard bettter.
@@hollis1003 I don't know if you are still active on here or not, so this is a shot in the dark. I just bought the pod hd500, and I am hooking it up to a 5150II head and 4x12 cab. I'm hoping to use the hd500 to polish my clean channel with some ambient reverb and delay. I'm wondering about switching channels. Do I have to switch channels on the 5150 pedal from distortion to clean, as well as press the button on the pod when I'm going to my clean channel? Or is there a way to set it up where I rely on only my head for distortion, and only the pod for cleans?
@@nickjonesreno Use midi to change the channels. I was doing exactly what you are suggesting. When you use a clean preamp in the POD and want to bypass the channels in the amp just turn off the FX loop in the POD. Then you are going into the POD and straight into the FX return of the 5150. The only issue I've had trying to use the 4cm is that it seems to shut off my amps knobs. Like, I can't adjust any of my physical amps settings if I run the hd500x that way
Then you are not doing it correctly. The FX loop in the HD500 goes to the front of your amp and the FX loop out of your amp comes back to the FX return in the HD500. You have to have the FX loop in the HD500 active so that the preamp in the amp works. Also, with most amps I've used, this is were the master volume on the amp is, before the FX loop of the amp.

You just have to concentrate on the signal and the order of the pedals. I was using noise gate in the POD before the FX loop. I would only reccomend using it in the loop of the amp (after pre-amp) if you play Djent or heavier type music that you need fast stops after your notes. Decimator or Hush noise reduction is best for the amp loop as they get rid of hiss as well. I also try to cut down on extra cables in terms of going between several effects outside of the POD, using only pedals that are not already in the POD. I would go: Guitar -> distortion pedals -> NS 2 -> POD HD -> POD FX loop send -> Amp input -> amp FX send -> mod pedals -> POD HD FX return -> Direct out of POD HD -> amp FX return.
part 2 - In the POD I put all my pre fx then I split the signal as if I have two amps going but neither is on. In the signal to the top (left) I put the FX loop (make sure it's ON) then at the mixer I pan that signal path to the center and I silence the bottom (path B) turn it all the way off. By doing this I don't have any volume issues of boosting or lowering. FX loop switch on Line and I think the Direct out put switch is on Line too (not amp). But you may have to experiment with that. Also, the Master volume should be all the way up, anything lower is not a normal volume for your amps FX loop. Hope that helps.

I don't know anything about that amp. It needs to have an FX loop if you want to use the 4 cable method. I am using Midi here to change the channels because the amp is capable of that. Most amps are not. If you want to do channel switching with a non-midi amp you need an amp gizmo type of unit that made for your amps particular channel switching circuit.

yes you can but the volume of the clean channel from your POD will be "static". You will have to reprogram it every time you change the volume of the gain channel in the 5150. I just had a discussion about this in another one of my videos. I will be doing a POD 4cm video soon and discuss some of that.

When doing this method my post effects are not active after the FX loop block behind the mixer... The FX is turned on and I am not using an amp modeler. What am I missing?
Anthony Cavallaro I'm reading a manual for the AC-50 that says there is a switch next to the FX loop that has to be turned on. "The series effects loop is situated between the outputs of the preamp stages and the input of the Reverb stage. The signal is then fed into the power amp stage. The BYPASS slide switch will either engage the loop (switch ON) or disconnect the effects loop circuitry from the rest of the amplifier (switch OFF). We recommend that if you are not using the loop then the switch should be set to the OFF position. With the LOOP switch in the OFF position, the SEND jack socket is still operational and can therefore be used to send the signal to another device such as a tuner or slave amplifier. The LOOP LEVEL Switch allows the loop to be used at two different signal levels (approximately +4dBV (high) and -10dBV (low)). This will enable a wide range of devices to be connected to the amplifier. We do not recommend the use of stomp box devices in a loop, particularly Fuzz and Distortion pedals as these can limit the headroom of the amplifier and prevent you achieving full power output"
+George Hollis , I'm honesty thinking there may be something wrong with my amps effects loop. Or I'm wondering if the fact it goes through the reverb circuitry is what may be preventing it from working the way I want it to. The good thing is there's so many options with the pod, it's definitely not preventing me from using it. Thanks for the feedback though
You should test by running directly into the FX return. Use a pre-amp model on the POD (no cab) and see if you get any sound that way. The only explanation is that your FX loop on the amp is not working in some way. Good luck. I will try to help as much as possible. Just keep hitting me up here.
Hello, thanks! just a question, If I use these method, and I want to use the amp modelling of the POD, what happens to the FX LOOP Block? if I leave it ON I will get a mix from my amp and the AMP of the POD, that is correct? do you recommend this or it's better to turn the loop OFF and use the pure simulation
No you still need the loop on. The signal from the POD goes directly into the FX return of the amp. I don't use the clean channel on the amp so I use a clean Pre-amp model in POD. It works great. As far as the amps with gain, I just think the 5153 sounds better.

I'm using a VOX AC-50. The FX loop on the amp is automatically active when plugged in.
Anthony Cavallaro I'm reading a manual for the AC-50 that says there is a switch next to the FX loop that has to be turned on. "The series effects loop is situated between the outputs of the preamp stages and the input of the
Reverb stage. The signal is then fed into the power amp stage. The BYPASS slide switch will
either engage the loop (switch ON) or disconnect the effects loop circuitry from the rest of the
amplifier (switch OFF). We recommend that if you are not using the loop then the switch should
be set to the OFF position.
With the LOOP switch in the OFF position, the SEND jack socket is still operational and can
therefore be used to send the signal to another device such as a tuner or slave amplifier.
The LOOP LEVEL Switch allows the loop to be used at two different signal levels (approximately
+4dBV (high) and -10dBV (low)). This will enable a wide range of devices to be connected to the
amplifier. We do not recommend the use of stomp box devices in a loop, particularly Fuzz and
Distortion pedals as these can limit the headroom of the amplifier and prevent you achieving full
power output"
As far as the amps with gain, I just think the 5153 sounds better.
were you using the amps
midi on this video?if not how did you set to change the channel
on each patch??
+ned arvey Yes, I was using Midi from the POD to the amp to change the channels. It's pretty easy and I have other videos that show the process.

Hi George, love the vids, great clarity with vision and instruction, great chops too.I like the sounds,i want to use the midi with my evh iii combo and not use the 4cm, when you did this in the video how are the effects going into the amp? I understand the midi channel switching, saved me alot of time...in the midi vid is that effects with the amp or pod modeling, email stringeeze at yahizzle it that is easier, thank you!!
I am always using the 4cm with the pod so that delay and reverb are in the fx loop, they don't sound good into the front of the amp. Patches coming your way.
