I was a guitar tech for a 4 month tour and both guitarist used these and when they dialed it in right WOW these sounded fantastic. We played theaters and arenas and they sounded great straight through the PA. Now as a owner of the HD 500X it does take a lot of tweaking and time to set up but to say the unit is bad is misleading. First off tone is based on perception, secondly I feel like most people who complain about the unit just simply want to buy a pedal that does one thing and does that one thing in one way. I agree it gets frustrating at times to fiddle around with all of the editing but if it's done right you can really get a killer tone out of this unit
I play live through a POD HD500 into a tube amp all the time and it sounds fantastic. I've also played it direct into the PA and it still sounds very good. If you think this thing sounds bad you either have never used on or you have it set up wrong.
I haven't actually tried the Nova System, but before I had the POD HD500 I was interested. TC Electronic have a good reputation for delays and modulation effects (chorus etc.), Not so much for their overdrives. The POD seems to me to do most effects pretty well. I'm sure some individual boutique stomp boxes may outshine the POD but the POD can cover a lot of territory very well
Hey Dave, I recognised your guitar playing style at the start and knew it was you before you had introduced yourself :) Have always enjoyed your Line 6 demo's over the past couple of years. You have inspire me to practice heaps and most definitely love your crunchy blues style of sound and playing. Today I will be purchasing the HD500 and take advantage of the looper to practice my lead guitar can't wait :) many thanks for your video's, take care
You clearly know how to use this thing better than most. I would not buy this expecting to plug it right into my live setup. It's going to take me a couple semesters at university to figure out how to get it all set up with tones I want to use.
dude, that's SO RIDICULOUSLY true.. if i could thumbs-up your comment 20x, i would. hahaha i'm a pro guitarist and i'm a jazz player, but i have to rock out for some gigs and i need tones... THIS vid was the one that helped me the most.
@ThatVaiGuy Very helpful, thanks! The trickiest thing for me with these units is managing inherent compression in each patch, which can vary widely, if not wildly. Compression is hard to judge sitting in front of your amp. I can create the illusion of "loudness" that does not transfer well to a gig situation, where none of the other instruments are equally compressed. That is why I like "stomp mode." Once I have a patch that works dynamically, I can duplicate and modify, like the L6 M13.
@jerseystringer I pretty much only use mine live. I don't find I spend any more time with it than I do any of my analog gear, which is to say I spend time when I want to craft a new sound. There are options to set depending on if its used in front of an amp or direct to board, or even whether or not you're putting it in the effects loop only. If you have an amp with a loop I recommend the 4 cable method, but make sure you go into system and tell it you're using an amp there. also...
I have used it with acouple of amps, a Mesa Boogie Studio 22, a Reynolds APR 501 (boutique Australian made amp) and more recently a Line 6 DT50. It sounded very good with all of them but the quality of sound and versatility when paired with the DT50 is just brilliant. But.... it also sounds very good straight into a PA if you get it set up right.
Are you talking about factory presets? I've never use a modeller, Axe FX, Eleven Rack, Pod XT, that had consistent volume across preset. Ever. You have to set the levels yourself, save the changes and switch back and forth to make sure they're relatively the same. If you were using real amps and had an A/B switch or an expensive amp switcher you'd still have to make sure the levels where the same on all the amps so the Pod HD is pretty much working as its supposed to.
If you run your POD through the effects in or power amp in section of your amp, you bypass the tone controls of the amp. I use a Bogner/Line 6 Spider 2 which gives me a real tube power amp sound and it works great clean or distorted.
@compoundguy The reason I ask is that it doesn't appear to offer "stomp" or "pedal mode," that lets you turn effects on and off as you might with a discrete pedal board, or with the M13 for that matter. The pedal labels are almost cryptic, and seem to be intended solely for looping, while the effects are relegated to the bank/patch arrangement. This can get dicey when you're trying to switch quickly between effects on the fly. Comparing the HD500 vs M13, or just pedals. Which is best live?
hi i'm interested in what you said about these units sounding crap live..i was thinking of buying one but found it sounded nasaly and piercing through the amp when i tried it in the shop..I've been told the output has to be set right for playing into an amp..But all I found was it was cringe worthy distortion with horrible eq..however the cleans were good.. I'm still not sure whether to buy one and see if i can tweak it or try the zoom g5, coz that has good reviews..
from this video its sounds great i think.. but was he playing through an amp?? that's my big question.. do they sound good live through an amp?? I'm not interested in playing into a computer.. i want to sound good on stage..I travel alot and need something i can transport overseas and plug in to any PA or Amp and it sound good
How compatible is this with the front end of a guitar amp? Is this configurable into a "stomp box" mode, rather than preset mode? Can you either bypass the amp/cab models, or better yet, incorporate them as additional tones that work (well) with an amp's front end? On first glance this looks like a studio pedal, not really for live unless you have lots of time to set it up and tweak it, or plan on going through a board instead of an amp.
Hey, really good video and really good stuff presented!. I am just curious if there is some BYPASS or MUTE button because I would like to know if I could play my distortion from my Engl Screamer 50 normally (without any pod effects), when I will have that line6 pod wired like this: guitar-pod-amp ? :)
@jerseystringer Hook up a laptop so you can use the POD HD500 Edit software. it's really easy to use and will simplify the task of crafting new sounds. The biggest thing I find interesting is the sound difference when using 1 amp than using dual amps when both amps are the same. I mean, it's a completely different sound. I almost exclusively use dual amps because of how rich and thick they sound, but that limits my ability to use other effects, especially DSP rich ones.
But why do you have to tune down the guitar for drop-D when you're using a Variax JT69 which can be pre-tuned and pre-programmed to whatever tuning you wish?
@razorrick1293 Yeah, you're right. A ton of effects boxes at hundreds of dollars each, Expensive tubes that constantly need replacing, A boat load of cables, Hours and hours of technical troubleshooting, Switch boxes to reroute signal paths, heavy cabs on breakable caster wheels... Oh, and a boat load of cash to acquire it all and put it together. A $500 POD that does that all right out of the box, I agree, something is missing.
Press footswitch 3 in Looper mode (changes the looper from pre FX Chain to Post FX Chain. To use more than one setting in loop combo, it needs to be POST FX Chain.
@majorstrings Add a noise gate. Or, if you're using powerful pickups, eg. on a Gibson SG, try selecting Pad instead of Norm on the switch next to the expression pedal. :)
this is interesting, I like the re-ordering. Too many multi-effects units only allow for one of each type of effect and in a fixed order. That's not why I want a multi, I can do that with pedals.
Yeah, the major roller coaster in terms of preset output level variations is disconcerting. That was one of the very first things I noticed. I should have seen it coming though--I bought a Line6 Spider in 2000 and was frustrated at the simplistic "oh, you want a cleaner tone? Let's make that much quieter than the distorted tones because we are smarter than you and will do your thinking for you." Fool me once . . . I still don't regret owning one. Then again I'm not in a band at the moment.
and believe me, you don't need 200 different tones to play out, or record for that matter, even if you are in a cover band, if you have one good sounding clean, and one good sounding crunch/lead, you're all set man. Now, all I said here was in regards to the AMP modeling on these units, their stompbox modeling is a completely different thing, they are actually really good, and very usable, so if you want delay's, reverbs, choruses, and so forth, and that's how I use mine, go at it!
@jerseystringer I have an HD 500, You can put it into Stomp Box mode. Don't worry about the labels. In stomp box mode, you can easily assign any parameter to the touch of a button. In fact, even the A B C D buttons at the bottom are stomp boxes as well for a total of 8 stomps, I only change patches when I first press the bank switch on the left. So, I stomp away as I'm playing, and then when I want to change presets I hit bank, and then the ABCorD switch to actually change the preset.
this video sounds good, and your pretty convincing, but having been around a pod 2.0 xt pro, a x3 live, a vetta amp, 2 floor boards and a m-9. they are fun desktop/headphone/bedroom, pieces and they record some things ok, and have done so-so on small stages. would I consider them pro gear? let's just say, I dont have enough faith in them to believe what they claim their products.
@razorrick1293 I could have said, the ability to use VSTs right from the board, third party vendor integration (think, the ability to buy a particular effect from a vendor, download it and add it to the POD), More DSP resources.
Its a very impressive gadget, but I am curious to know why Boss and Line 6 are more expensive than zoom, when actually Zoom has more features than those two, like drum machine, for example. Why the price difference? Can you throw some light on this?
Depends on the setup you use for the tone. You can configure the tone to be a preamp only, thus making in more suitable to be connected to an FX loop (which bypasses the preamp of your amp). If you use a full preamp+poweramp simulation on the POD, you might wanna go into the front panel of your amp.
From the same problem, but still have the above mentioned problems. Also note, I'm talking about modelers in general, not one specific brand or product, I've had tons of them, from all different brands, still have a POD XT and HD, a GSP 2101, a BOSS GT8, and a VOX tone lab countless DAW's plug ins, they all have the same problem. So my advice to you is, save your money and buy a decent tube amp, it doesn't have to be anything fancy, dang a Bugera would put any of these modelers to shame...
Hey Grant, yeah I see my original comment has received too many negative votes. What a joke. Line 6 employees all told to give it thumbs down. The criticism stands. It's a roller coaster, exactly right. "Versatility" is fine for a studio where you can record a pan flute or a Marshall Plexi with time to adjust. Try that live, all out of the same system. LEVELS, Line 6, LEVELS. Balance them. Models are great but try to imagine they are all on the same stage, same time. Rocket science?
Hi, everyone! Does anybody uses the looper from that pod? I have a 500x and the problem is next: I record a loop and I use a stereo delay for example, and when I finish, the looper plays that effect mono. Why? Is it possible to change that?
question about the looper: i press on the looper switch and then record. after i play it there is always a pause for a moment and then the looper starts and the same thing over and over again.how do i fix this?
Hi...I have the 500x modell and iv got one isiu..When i connect using a greenroom hub i get my sound more like transistor distorted in my headphones..iv been trying all outputs like ballansed..phones and unballansed but its the same..when i connect to a power amp the sond is great...Can you please help me with my problem cuz i cant use the 500x for recording as it sounds now...
I have a line 6 spider IV 75 watt and a POD HD500X pedalboard, I need to help me understand how to connect the L or R output directly to the amplifier without losing the original sounds of the pedalboard, since I tried to set the amplifier in clean sound to get Better the sounds of the POD but it has been useless, it always sounds like stuck sounds.
Masterbit.... if it's anything like my PodX3 Live you have to turn off "cabinet" emulation in your pedal. I had a Spider IV 150HD which is essentially an amp modeler also. So you have the pedal trying to emulate a cabinet into another cabinet (the spider IV). Once I did that I was able to take my Pod and connect it to anyones amp anywhere and it sounded like my presets with the character of whatever cab they were using.
Thank you so much for this video.. Almost all the Line 6 Pod videos all they play is metal.. I mean cm'on they buy a 400 dollar processor then only demo only one genre.. lol
I need some help i have a Line 6 spider II 150w which as you know is an amplifier with all the effects and bass, mid, treb etc, how would connecting the pod HD affect the sound?
@JRCrowley I practise as much as i can, with nothing but my guitar, and a 7W 2 channel all valve amp hand wired and customized to get all the tone i want.
@ThatVaiGuy Im not a fan of a pedal board as full as possible with every effect you can think of, that just takes more out of the tone... only main ones you really need are wah, delay/reverb boost/distortion maybe an EQ, yet this set up isnt for everyone, everyones ears are different, and i will say, i used to love all the tones the POD stuff put out, until i started experimenting with the tones of true tube amps, that just dont need the processing to cover up they are a digital mess
Dude...it's not about playing through ONE amp. A "real" amp well help you retain good guitar tube tone in familiar format...your stage rig...poweramp tone and cab shaking the air. The direct (sans amp) is an option, not a requirement. And when you are playing live....you plop down the HD500, plug in guitar and amp...and have tones and effect for ANY occasion all with the touch of one button. It's about flexibility, ease of use, convenience and expressing yourself. What's so hard to "get"?
Oz, I don't disagree about versatility, on-the-fly or otherwise, but when you put the amp models, drive pedals, compressors, side by side, the levels don't match. If you're playing through your Plexi and I'm playing through my Princeton, you know my little amp is gonna be mic'd to keep up. Tone is independent of level, so all models should get the same juice, and be interchangeable on stage. They just aren't. Line 6 should release an update that corrects this. Levels should be "level." Simple.
How can I create this first preset with the octaver without sound strange? I should put the octaver and what position? I think that when I put the octaver in front of the distortion, sounds like a piece of shit! I have a POD HD500 and I never got a preset with a octaver with a good sound. Please Help me
The thing with all modelers, and tell you the truth Line 6 really is the best of the bunch, is that they sound half decent, directly into you computer/headphones, but as soon as you try to play this live, through an amp, it sound like pure crap, you really can't make it sound good, specially if the other guitarrist is using a real, nice tube amp, but I gues for quick and dirty demos at 3am in your bedroom it's ok
Download the drive solo for the lead sound, this was made for the single stroke strings riffs for rock and metal, 2013 new wave sound, , you may need to change the EQ because I used the pioneer headphones, and for some headphones and different wood guitars and pickups, you may need to do same adjustments, I found that the other metal amps they lack mids for harmonics and single string power riffs, Please give comments, Paulo silva8200 patches, best is the drive and drive lead

I agree, these take an investment in time, but in the end it's worth it.
I play live through a POD HD500 into a tube amp all the time and it sounds fantastic. I've also played it direct into the PA and it still sounds very good. If you think this thing sounds bad you either have never used on or you have it set up wrong.
The sound you got soon as you backed off the volume did it for me ; good demo !
I haven't actually tried the Nova System, but before I had the POD HD500 I was interested. Cool demo, this guy is a great player
I checked out your channel on a whim and it was worth it!

I really like the "8-bit" kind of sound in the begining
That sound you got about 40 seconds in is the first HD500 patch whose tone I've really liked a lot.
@ThatVaiGuy This is good to know too. Excellent information. Much appreciated.
I just ordered one of these today from zZounds. I'll have it tomorrow. I can't wait to get to tweaking.
@jerseystringer I pretty much only use mine live. I don't find I spend any more time with it than I do any of my analog gear, which is to say I spend time when I want to craft a new sound. ive got the x3 live and the only thing better about this is you can loop. thats it no matter what nothing beats a real amp!

i totally agree with you. no jazz classical blues reggae pop gospel, etc.
use the pre/post button before you start your loop, make sure the looper is "pre" then loop, then exit the looper and change your sound
Check out Steve howes rig rundown (yes/Asia)he uses this on stage and absolutely loves it.
hi i'm interested in what you said about these units sounding crap live..i was thinking of buying one but found it sounded nasaly and piercing through the amp when i tried it in the shop..I've been told the output has to be set right for playing into an amp..But all I found was it was cringe worthy distortion with horrible eq..however the cleans were good.. @JRCrowley thanks for the tip, but i think il leave the POD for now,
That clean tone he uses in the beginning is sweet! anyone know what preset that is??
But why do you have to tune down the guitar for drop-D when you're using a Variax JT69 which can be pre-tuned and pre-programmed to whatever tuning you wish?
@espforall Anything from the previous PODs works on the HD500 as far as I know as long as it's actually from Line 6.

@majorstrings
Add a noise gate.
What scales is he using to solo? Does this pod have good phase shifter, reverb and delay effects?
Yeah, the major roller coaster in terms of preset output level variations is disconcerting. That was one of the very first things I noticed. I should have seen it coming though--I bought a Line6 Spider in 2000 and was frustrated at the simplistic "oh, you want a cleaner tone? Hi, is possible to have more amp models like pod xt live? Models pack like Metal Shop, Classic Collector... Thanks.

Hey I know this question might sound dumb but, on the display screen of the 500, which position is the pre and which is post?
I have the POD XLT... how much of a difference are the sounds between the two, when you are playing live out of PA?
@razorrick1293 yes there is. and it is Dan Agusto
@jerseystringer I have an HD 500, You can put it into Stomp Box mode. Don't worry about the labels. In stomp box mode, you can easily assign any parameter to the touch of a button. i have a isp decimator pedal and was wondering how to incorporate this external pedal in the rig?
thumbs-up for red converse all-stars!!!
this video sounds good, and your pretty convincing, but having been around a pod 2.0 xt pro, a x3 live, a vetta amp, 2 floor boards and a m-9. they are fun desktop/headphone/bedroom, pieces and they record some things ok, and have done so-so on small stages. would I consider them pro gear? let's just say, I dont have enough faith in them to believe what they claim their products.
when you change presets to another presets does the HD500 lagging or is it a seamless change between presets? What i meant is lagging in the sound?
@razorrick1293 I could have said, the ability to use VSTs right from the board, third party vendor integration (think, the ability to buy a particular effect from a vendor, download it and add it to the POD), More DSP resources.
Hi, I bought the POD HD500 and I wonder what amplifier you use with the POD HD500. Can you tell me please? Thanks so much!

If you use a full preamp+poweramp simulation on the POD, you might wanna go into the front panel of your amp.
Hey i got a quick question. when you apply your amp mod what should be the settings on your amp(bass, gain, treble)?
Hi ,I'm interested in buying a multi effect and I'm deciding between Zoom g5n and Line6 HD500X, even after so long you still have Line6 a good option?
bought podhd500x u will never regret it. i have been in that situation. and i choose pod and iam happy.
@saintofbladez
Sure I do Friend.I'm used to my X3 and it's variety.
So my advice to you is, save your money and buy a decent tube amp, it doesn't have to be anything fancy, dang a Bugera would put any of these modelers to shame...
i can still hear the feedback from his high distortion patches, Is there anyway to stop it???

would you choose the pod hd 500 or a TC nova system ??
i am about to buy this pod but still i am confused between line 6 pod hd500 and line 6 x3 live.
can anybody advise what would be good ?
Is this direct into a PA? Or is it going thru an amp?
Is there any way to completely bypass the amp/cab/mic? I want to use, only, the effects with my amp,... nothing else
Hi, everyone! Does anybody uses the looper from that pod? I have a 500x and the problem is next: I record a loop and I use a stereo delay for example, and when I finish, the looper plays that effect mono. Why? Is it possible to change that?

oh yeah.... i want one, i want one!!!

I mean cm'on they buy a 400 dollar processor then only demo only one genre.. lol
Does this machine (POD HD500) have an analog electronic circuit for the overdrive/distortion effects?
nah. dont think so
which is the best for live test....(hd 500/GT 100)
wow u can loop on that machine how do u do that play then plat to it like that
I need some help i have a Line 6 spider II 150w which as you know is an amplifier with all the effects and bass, mid, treb etc, how would connecting the pod HD affect the sound?
@JRCrowley I practise as much as i can, with nothing but my guitar, and a 7W 2 channel all valve amp hand wired and customized to get all the tone i want.
Also available right side up...
@ThatVaiGuy Im not a fan of a pedal board as full as possible with every effect you can think of, that just takes more out of the tone... only main ones you really need are wah, delay/reverb boost/distortion maybe an EQ, yet this set up isnt for everyone, everyones ears are different, and i will say, i used to love all the tones the POD stuff put out, until i started experimenting with the tones of true tube amps, that just dont need the processing to cover up they are a digital mess
the song what i'v done by linkin park-what guitar effect is used there? can you please tell me and reply to this post
I didn't know that the guy from Maroon 5 played guitar. Cool!
Wow...that is some real uncut customer rhetoric which LINE6 should pay attention to...
Is it so hard to put noise gate?
That's the Line6 James Tyler Variax (JTV-69(Korean)/JTV-69US)
@brandon5pennies, it doesn't, actually. Completely different sound processing model, I'm afraid :(..
Dat lick @ 5:29 hell yeah !
Why did you put the camera so high up? I feel tall.
Fuck bro. You got them blues!
Why only 16 amps?
How can I create this first preset with the octaver without sound strange? I should put the octaver and what position? I think that when I put the octaver in front of the distortion, sounds like a piece of shit! I have a POD HD500 and I never got a preset with a octaver with a good sound. Please Help me
What kind of guitar?
The thing with all modelers, and tell you the truth Line 6 really is the best of the bunch, is that they sound half decent, directly into you computer/headphones, but as soon as you try to play this live, through an amp, it sound like pure crap, you really can't make it sound good, specially if the other guitarrist is using a real, nice tube amp, but I gues for quick and dirty demos at 3am in your bedroom it's ok
They are really meant to go into a solid state power amp or PA.
Yeah, that's why Steve fucking Howe uses this thing live for almost all his sounds...
Wo kann man die Presets finden, das find ich viel interessanter....
I have managed to copy some Periphery tones using the POD HD
You can get the patches on my site:

Dude I'm so glad I saw this! Definitely buying a couple once my pod comes in!
goose3379 You won't regret it man! My customers are all very satisfied and you can see that by reading their reviews, at the bottom of each page!
Nice one Don lol bad ground? on a transformer that has no ground and is highly filtered?
