Q? Why do you always start from the same side when doing your straight lines? Since it is a small square, wouldn’t it be easier to finish a line of stitching, flip the quilt 180°, then stitch the next line going in the other direction?
You can, or you can sew along the edge and then start your new line without cutting thread. Some people say this saves thread as the thread cutters on sewing machines waste thread. I guess it's personal preference.
What's the name of the curved piecing block please? Hubby came in and really liked it and is asking for a quilt made of it. Nothing like a challenge I really don't much enjoy curved piecing - far too stressful 😄
Yes it's called Winding Ways. I have never made it but I did find these instructions (Can't vouch for them though: www.allpeoplequilt.com/quilt-patterns/quilt-throws/winding-ways). I dont' really enjoy curved piecing either, but I will keep trying :-)
On some of your examples, would this not be like stitch in the ditch? The spacing on the grid seems to land right where the seams come together. How would you highlight the quilting rather than stitching in the ditch?
Hi Angie - It depends on the quilt and the quilt blocks. The example you are talking about would be stitch in the ditch in which case it woud just add texture. To highlight you could always sew the line just to the side of the ditch, like 1/8 so it shows. Hope that helps!

I loved the way it worked on the Winding Ways. It made the curved pieces look like butterflies.

LOL I am definitely getting better through practice, but I need my drawn lines to keep me right otherwise we have curves :-)
You know that's funny as I find that if I go too slow I find it harder to stay straight as well, a medium speed is the best for me anyway

It's just habit for filming. When I sew a full size project, I alternate the direction of my lines to avoid puckering.
When I quilt a grid like this, why would I get puckers with my walking foot and none without?

It's a scottish word for a something that isn't straight - "The line was squint" i.e the line wasn't straight.
