The ColourBlind Quilter
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ม.ค. 2020
Hi, I'm Tom, The Colourblind Quilter.
I love quilting, it really does make me happy. But there are certain things that I am yet to master. Or things that I really want to get better at.
I created this TH-cam channel to share my journey as I learn how to be a better quilter and how to work with and use colours more effectively. And hopefully you'll find something along the way that helps you.
When not producing content here, I am a singing teacher and director of an institute that trains and certifies singing teachers around the world.

Tom & Kristen's Collab Quilt Part 2: Quilty Maths and Designs
🏅 I've entered the Festival of Quilts competition with my friend Kristen from @ScrapFabricLove
This is part 2 of my quilt collab with Kristen. I am sharing my behind-the-scenes today as I plan my quilt pieces, get carried away with digital design and deal with fun and last-minute size changes.

So, who am I? I'm Tom, the ColourBlind Quilter from Edinburgh, Scotland, and I've been quilting for 15 years. I love to make traditional quilt blocks but use modern design (think solid colours).
I've learned how to cope with my red-green colour blindness and developed ways to make things easier for myself. I don't pretend to be some all-knowing quilting "guru"; I have a passion for quilting and want to share my journey with others in case it helps them.
I have a background as a singing teacher and run an organisation that trains singing teachers worldwide. I take teaching methodologies from that and apply them to learning and mastering quilting.
You can expect anything from quilting patterns and block deconstructions to quilting designs. I even throw in sewing challenges, quilt-along and random vlogs.

It's time to dive into quarter-square triangles with the Ohio Star Quilt Block. Such a fun block to make and one that's been around for a while in the quilting world. We use two-at-a-time construction methods to make these blocks fast but still nice and easy. Make sure you check out example quilt number 3, as it's pretty cool if I do say so myself :-) So grab your fabric for block number 7, and...
"8 Pointed Star" Quilt Block Tutorial - Behind the Blocks #6
มุมมอง 79810 หลายเดือนก่อน
Now, we all hate it when things don't go to plan, and that's precisely what happened with this month's 8-pointed star quilt block video. Watch to see me figure out that I made a massive mistake with my block construction this month, which led to us creating an improvised quilt block I am still claiming is an 8-pointed star :-) You've got to roll with the punches, as they say, and after I dusted...

Churn Dash Quilt Block Tutorial - Behind the Blocks #5
มุมมอง 413ปีที่แล้ว
The Churn Dash Quilt Block has a special place in my quilting toolbox. It was one of the first quilt blocks I made, and I love how this one looks. It's so quick and straightforward to make, but it looks great. Bold contrasting colours work well with this one to make the elements stand out. You can do a lot with this as a one-block quilt pattern, tweaking colours, adding snowballs, etc., creatin...
The Ribbon Star Quilt Block - Behind the Blocks #4
มุมมอง 449ปีที่แล้ว
The Ribbon Star quilt block is such a fun block! I had never made it before, but it is such an easy block to make. All you need is HSTs and some background squares - it's that simple. Fast forward, and now I am planning a navy and orange quilt using this block (see example quilt #3). Have fun and enjoy this one! If you need a refresher on making HSTs, be sure to check out block number 1 in the ...
Friendship Star Quilt Block
มุมมอง 471ปีที่แล้ว
The Friendship Star quilt block is a fun little block that is very simple to make. This was actually my first time making this one, but it was a piece of cake. You will be whipping this one up in no time at all! For some reason, when I look at this, it reminds me of those star things that ninjas throw. This could make a fun quilt for a kid who loves that kind of thing If you need a refresher on...
Jacob’s Ladder Quilt Block

The classic Jacob's ladder blocks are one of my favourite blocks, which I learned from Jenny at MSQC. I love this block, but I don't make it that often, but the 2nd example quilt in this video makes me want to make another quilt. This video was delayed by many months due to eye problems and infections that have been troubling me since Feb 2023. I finally got a diagnosis and am currently getting...
Zigzag Crosshatch Quilting Design - Design #13 - This is How You Quilt It

This ZigZag crosshatch quilting design is such a fun design for projects. I love the depth and texture it adds to a project. It sort of reminds me of crazy paving, which was a popular style of garden paving years ago. I had a lot of fun making this design, and I do hope you'll give it a try. And yes, I know I say it for every design, but this one really is my favourite ;-) // SERIES PLAYLIST //...
Pinwheel Quilt Block - Block #1 - Behind the Blocks Season 2

The pinwheel quilt block is a versatile, easy-to-make quilt block that can be used in many quilt patterns. The trick is learning the foundation of the block, which is a Half Square Triangle (HSTs). In this video, I'll show you how to make two-at-a-time Half Square Triangles and give my tips and tricks for getting them nice and crisp. This does not need the jerky music.
Health problems are a bummer. 2024 will be my year for said issues. I’m slowly on the mend and can sew again which is great cuz it’s my therapy. Love your xmas quilt with the messy red backing. I’m interested in trying that kind of backing, guess you just have to accept the mess and clean up later. And I love both scrappy and striped bindings. 👍🏻💕
there is SO much I can relate to in this video! I will just keep it to one anecdote: when I first started quilting, my local store had a Wednesday night quilt 'club', where we'd pick a pattern and spend the month making the top. About 4 months in, someone chose a design from a magazine. It turns out it was the designer's first published design, and she had designed it in EQ6 or EQ7 (I forget and it was a long time ago). Well, talk about what looks cool in a digital design program vs what can be done in person! I could tell this person just went to town designing all kinds of elements that look very cool but are difficult to accurately sew. I had only been sewing for maybe 5 or 6 months. This thing had so many snowball/diamond rectangles/HSTs that it was almost impossible to get everything to fit together. It was essentially a 9-patch, but each patch was its own complicated design. When I put my rows together, my center row was a 1/2" short on each side. Thankfully I was able to trim down the blocks without too much angst, and I added sashing to help cover some of it (the original design didn't have sashing). That ended up being the end of our Wed night quilting club, because we kept extending additional months so people could keep working on it, and in the end, I was the only one who finished it. Others moved on to other projects and we just sort of drifted off to our own projects. :/
I've come over from Kristen's channel. I'm about to watch the third video in the series but I will return to watch more of yours.
This is so exciting to me! I have not been brave enough to make a competition quilt and I have never made a collaborative quilt. But you and Kristin make it seem so fun and DOABLE that I am now very tempted to try both.
Hope to see you both at FOQ; not long to go now. I shall look for your collaborative quilt, hope it does well.
Looking forward to the reveal and looking forward to seeing you at the Birmingham Quilt Show, if I were younger and closer I would love to attend.
Hello Tom, thank you for this video - have been watching it again for inspiration and to get me sewing again when I can take my summer annual leave soon. Can I ask what are the colours you used for the chromatic crackle quilt please? I think you said one of them was pomegranate, but am curious what the yellow and blue colours were. Thank you!
Breathing is good. Haha Glad you enjoyed the process! Can't wait to see the finished quilt!
I’m so excited to see this. Honestly so excited!!! 😂 Also Tom, you’re so bloody adorable!!!!!! 🎉
Big difference between finished and unfinished sizes! You will never make that mistake again!
Looking forward to seeing your quilt next week. I’m really looking forward to my first visit to festival of quilts and I’ll hopefully see lots of the people I follow on IG and YT. I like quilt maths too and everyone thinks I’m weird, but the design of a quilt is one of my favourite parts of quilt making. I’ve never done a collaboration on a quilt but it sounds like a lot of fun. Well done getting it finished in time.
I make a quilt the way you do. I spend a lot of time thinking and sleeping on my ideas. Look forward to seeing part 3 and 4
I cant wait for your _____ novel "Sew it to Completion"
Thanks for sharing
You two are awesome and appreciate that you are being honest about your process - looking forward to your reveal❤ having only done a round robin (or two). Best of luck at the show
I was laughing watching at our deadline ridiculousness!! 😂
Hey Tom, I think it’s really great that you are branching out and trying new things, but I wish you would continue with your “behind the blocks season two”. Those of us who have bought all the fabric, cut out the blocks and started this project are waiting to get on with it and finally finish this project. It’s pretty discouraging to be left hanging halfway through like this. Please post the next block as soon as possible, or maybe just give us the rest of the instructions so we can finish on our own. Thanks.
Yes, i agree. It is frustrating to wait 5 months and see other projects starting and going on.
Great video.
Grrr! You're making us wait for the final reveal! Give Kristen your scraps; they'll be gold to her!
Grr.i do not find the First part.😢
Oh wow that's a complex project. Good luck at the show!
Love this. Thank you
Where do I get pattern.
Thank you so much for this (and your other videos in the series)! I've been getting bored of just quilting in a grid pattern, and it's so nice to have some alternative ideas. My little machine feels a lot less limited now :)
Yes know how you fell about the UFO'S have five sitting in a cupboard with not much to do to finish them. Always something new to start🤪Desley🇦🇺
Thanks for sharing
Hearing talk about color blindness makes me realize that my "disability" is sound. I work in silence by choice. I took out the car radio so I can concentrate on the road. Music in videos is so distracting I can barely process the words.... that likely ARE important. Seconds into video I hit mute. But the words are gone then too, and I click NEXT! Revelation )))
Beautiful job
Hi thanks for the video and the pdf.. I have one doubt
How is in the middle row the red and white squares look the same size.. mine. One is 3.5 and other 4.5 .how will I join the. What have I missed
This is fabulous. I have spent weeks trying to find a quilting design for a 50 inch square fpp dog block. It has hundreds of random pieces at random angles, and this is the perfect quilting design for it. Will also assist in dodging those very bulky sections.
To help seams go through your machine easier, try a stiletto. Saves fingers and really assists!
I love your work! Keep going, I have trouble with my eyes also, I usually stitch before noon. Stitching is my therapy!
I feel less bad about the quilt sandwich sitting for 18 months that just needs two hours of quilting 😅 to make it ready for binding and gifting 😂
Enjoyed this so much! Can’t wait to find your follow up video!
Loved your review of 2023. I'm like you I'm all enthusiastic to start a project and then when I get to a bit that I think might be difficult it goes in a box. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a pile of UFO's that only need quilting. Looking forward to seeing what you do in the rest of 2024.
When I quilt a grid like this, why would I get puckers with my walking foot and none without?
Love your videos.
Missed you 😢
I don't like that much fidelity bits in quilts either. Just not my thing
so inspiring
Enjoyed your Quilt Review.
Very pretty quilts! Cleaver designs very artsy modern. So much can be done with jyst solids. I just don't have the imagination to do them. You do🤩
Lots of UFO's but am concentrating on doing 3 at a time as I have 3 sewing machines. I just go from one to the other, enjoy each pattern, and don't worry about it. All of my UFO's will eventually get done. I am doing your BOM now and enjoying this but I am not calling this a UFO!😃🥰
Thanks for sharing your 2023 year with us.
