The CX-5 is currently the largest vehicle in the SA range and has also been consistently their best seller .
As a premium, medium family SUV, it offers a great package across the range which consists of various spec levels and, most importantly, 3 engine choices. The range starts with the very familiar 2l petrol engine that's also used in the Mazda3, CX-3 and CX-30 models powering the front wheels through a 6 speed manual or torque convertor automatic transmission. Power is rated at 121kW and 213Nm.
At the top of the range are the Individual model with a 2.5l 4 cylinder petrol engine delivering 143kW and 258Nm to all 4 wheels and then the only diesel model in the range, the Akera. The 2.2 diesel delivers 140kW and 450Nm in AWD format as well.
We had a few days with the Akera diesel model. The car feels premium throughout and the unstressed diesel motor is perfectly matched to the 6 speed auto box. Easy cruising is definitely where this motor is really at home, equally so when pottering along in traffic. We averaged 7l/100km for urban driving and a few freeway forays. One short freeway trip showed 5.4l/100km, so I'm sure any driver could achieve similar on the long road with gentle treatment of the accelerator pedal.
As the range topping model, the Akera is packed full of luxury and safety spec. The infotainment screen may be a bit small by modern standards but it offers full connectivity and a Bose sound system. The reverse camera offers rear and overhead views. Safety spec includes lane assist, blind spot warning and cross traffic warning among the items that have become expected at this level.
The CX-5 range is currently priced from R515 000 up to R760 000 as tested. All models include the 3 year/ unlimited mileage warranty and service plan.
