Today I give my honest thoughts on Star Citizen in 2024. What Star Citizen got right this year, what flopped, and the unfortunate delays that occurred. And ultimately; Is it worth playing? Or is it better to wait for the next big patch. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

@DermotBrophy Pre-production usually involves the creation of ideas and concepts. There is no general game development. A lot of that began in 2012, but didn't really start until 2013.
Squadron 42 first began as the main focus, with Star Citizen being a small multiplayer game. Now, it's evolved as a full MMO. The reason Squadron 42 is no longer included with Star Citizen is due to legal reasons on the EU. They're not allowed to sell a game that is not released that doesn't have a release date. So Squadron 42 was removed from the store.
Yes, the project evolved with the amount of money the game obtained due to popularity and a Grey market did ensue.
I've been here since the project began. The game has been mired by controversy in many ways, and a lot of poor decisions have been made. The biggest reason I returned is because they have been steadily improving.

That’s like asking if buying a car with no radio, stuttering engine, no a/c, badly needing a tune up, half working starter and fuel pump , and tires with little to no tread which you’ll have to leave at a mechanic who will take 40 years to fix the fuel pump is worth it. If you’re lucky the car can go to you great great great grandkids long after your death.

Pretty good analogy considering the car you described is a track/rally car. A car designed not for everyone and their grandmas but for a certain person wanting a certain experience.
Star citizen is a for a certain group of players who want a certain experience, instead of catering to the masses

Now, years later, im 'Still' not certain i got a strong enough system to manage this game, i can play helldivers like a charm, and a wide variety of other titles, but when it comes to SC? i can never be certain.
Another free run is being held at the time i am making to comment, hopefully i can make it work and at least enjoy what the game does currently have to offer.

You know what keeps me going is that SC has things that none of the other space games I have played for years have. Yea it is beyond frustrating, I fell through a planet after buying a huge amount of cargo. Lost all my gear and all the gear on my ship, but my cargo was still in storage because I had not loaded it yet. Took me two days to find a server stable enough to load it up and deliver it and get paid just before this latest update in which case I would of been out of a lot of UEC. I keep hoping CIG pulls it off because frankly I do not see any other space game that is in the works to do what SC is trying to do. Nice recap. I agree that it has had some quality of life improvements and some other frills, but the big changes like Master Modes was more of a down for me than a positive...to put it politely. Hangers are just so-so for me. Now I store my stuff in boxes instead of the station. I do like leaving some smaller ships out on the sides. This patch has been pretty stable and 3.24.1 looks too be solid. Looking forward to the Zeus to come out in a few weeks...Likely Citizen Con.

As far as master modes, I'm really hoping for more changes that are positive for all parties involved. A lot of players are playing and using master modes comparatively, but people who don't like it are more vocal than every. Each side has valid arguments and views. I do think that they can make it better just like every other flight model that went through their painful moments.

What the data shows in Arena Commander is that there is almost 3 times as many players playing in Arena Commander.

It's not survivorship bias if players aren't playing near as much, but more are playing in Arena Commander.
Master Modes isn't going anywhere. But CIG will make changes to the flight model that will make everything better. They just need to test various flight model configurations at a time, and listen to feedback.

Just ducking in to say hello and thank you for the fine video. Sending you some encouragement Havok; there's no denying that it's been a disappointing year but we've had some big updates too which were great as you mentioned. I'm not sure what they are going to do for CitCon this year; I can't see them not giving a release date for S42 at this point. Not after saying it's going into the polishing phase last year. I just don't think they can keep putting that off much longer; it's time to get that show on the road; I think they'll announce it for Q3 2025. They will likely want to release it with 4.0 which is when I think we'll see that (we'll get it in the spring, but it won't work). CR wants it to be a big deal and what better way to market a single player game than with the promise of related a MMO version where you can travel between systems? It's definitely not a scam. The game has a lot of moments that are unique to SC in good ways and bad ways. I've had some of the most amazing moments in SC, especially with friends and org mates.
But I most certainly won't sit here and preach to you that it's the most amazing game and you should buy a package. You should definitely try it out during the free fly events. But you gotta keep in mind that things are still rough a lot the time.
For all intents and purposes, we're all the early testers of the game as they build it. We're part of active development, which often sucks. One day, hopefully soon, the game will be so much better and entertaining than it is now. And it will truly offer an incredible experience unique to Star Citizen. The biggest draw to the game is that it's a sandbox. You can literally what ever you want.
I'd just encourage you to keep an open mind and just keep your eye on it. That way, you get to see it be built and get to make your decision once the game is in a much better state.

The game is just over ambitious, promising capabilities that cant be done rn. The technology simply doesnt exist in the gaming industry to run the type of servers theyre trying to run and the game is getting too complex for its own good. You cant even run minecraft with 1000 players simultaneously with no lag, theres a reason why all other MMO games need seperate servers to split the playerbase. I think the devs are trying to keep the game alive until technology advances enough for them to actually implement the features they want but that means cash grabs until that time comes

I'm not sure what to make of this video. I feel like you get it a little bit, without really getting it. Everyone knows (that has been paying attention) that the single server that the game runs in has been full for many years. The PU is at the very end of their development pipeline, there is a lot they are working on (that they have show us) that cant be added until server meshing is in because the code has been written that way. They have only been able to add stuff to the PU as they remove stuff from the server, like adding the data separation so that not everything has to load into server memory. Do you think CIG WANT to delay everything? Or do you think that getting server meshing is difficult and hard to get right and to a state that scales? This video is more about your disappointment that you wanted stuff when you want it. It might be better to just let them try to make their game and then come back and help test it when they have it to a state they are happy with? Streamers keep saying stuff like 'development is slow' but what they mean is 'stuff being added to the PU is slow'. We all know why that is but it doesnt stop streamers making click bait videos about it.

Well, I did say a lot of this was about my opinions based on my experience with SC for the last 12 years. And if I was to speak more on my real thoughts, I'd be called an idiot or someone would say I'm insane.
Personally, I've always held the belief for the last few years that they were working so hard on server meshing cause of everything that ties into it and that CIG could possibly have a ton of other features that have been completed, but haven't implemented because server meshing would either break it and they'd have to rewrite it, or they just won't work until they have server meshing, so they didn't bother putting it in.
They're clearly done with the work on Odin (cause of SQ42), and Nyx has likely been done for a while. But obviously they can't release those until server meshing is working in a very good state.
I have a lot of varying opinions and perspectives on what I believe can be possible. I try as much as I can to not make things clickbaity, but this is something that youtube basically forces you to do to be recommended.
It's what gets people to find your channel. It's probably the most annoying and frustrating part of being a content creator to be honest.

@@Hav0k i do massively sympathise with TH-cam creators. Space Tomato did a video some time back sharing his frustration with putting hours into a 'positive' video only for nobody to watch it. People love drama, i do get that. But the fallout for people wanting to maximise monetisation by posting drama videos is that it creates LOTs of misinformation and unwarrented bad feeling in the community. Mark Abent did a video in bug smashers saying 'the server is full'. That was maybe 6 years ago. The game as you know runs on 1 single server per instance of 100 players (excluding servers running services). It doesnt matter how much stuff CIG create (and they have a lot of people creating it), they cant add it. I know you get this, but its incredibly frustating to see videos complaining about them not adding content when people know they cant add content and say it just get views on YT. Its like my kids saying 'are we there yet' even though i told them its Scotland and its 7 hours away (yes i get that they said this would be done sooner, i knew it wouldnt be because I knew server meshing wouldnt be as simple as they thought). IF CIG release server meshing and nothing happens with adding developed content into the game because we find they havnt actually made it, then i think critisism would be warrented. What they are building (if it comes to fruition) is ground breaking in the games industry, yes its hard to wait for it and yes its not what they pitched for all those years ago (i've been around a while too) but show me the other game like this thats being developed and i'll go play that instead. love your videos though, keep up the good work. .

I am not someone who is on the bash StarCitizen bandwagon. I am legitimately curious if those on the hype-train will ever have a legitimate problem with a moved target. This is starting to become an NFT video game (conceptually - little real value, all hype). I just built another high-end pc and thought it was time to give it another go. I logged on recently and while there are things in this game that just can be so impressive, it is skin-deep at best. It is like putting a hyper car body on a Yugo frame. Some bugs have been fixed and there is progress, but the game is still littered with bugs that effect the playability. There are also gameplay elements that are really bad by today's standards, and even most of yesteryear (shooting and AI are still just not good). I am forced to warn people about what purchasing this game means and why they should avoid buying extras even if they do risk a purchase. I don't want to and I wish this hype-train would reach the station, but after years of playing I question why anyone is still riding after this long. The only answer I can see is the sunk cost fallacy. Sure, sometimes it offers a truly unique experience, but those times where it works are not often enough for it to be given credibility.

They could have bought ten and literally flown people into space for the amount they have raised for this game and we still don’t have a single player and it is always next year. I do want to believe and there are things about this game worth talking about, but at some point you have to be transparent that what it is currently is a bad game with a low-likelihood of being good soon.

I think that a lot of it rides on their ability to deliver on their goals for what they made for 1.0. The game still has a ways to go, but they are making progress even while they're making two games.
I really don't get the argument some people make that it's a scam (not necessarily talking about you) because the game can be played right now. It has moments where it's a great experience. And moments where stability is just terrible and it detracts from the game.
But I've honestly had moments in this game that were unlike any other, and they were genuinely some of the best, which is what keeps me coming back.
2025 might be a big year. It might not. But if they can begin to deliver the vision of 1.0 over the next few years, it will still be worth it.
My intention is to always be transparent about the game. There are definitely issues that suck, but it still has those amazing moments that can't be matched. Truly.
If they can deliver a much more stable experience, even with some bugs, it will still be worthwhile.

In my opinion the success of SC depends completely on Server Meshing. I fear it does not work because there is no real progress visible here except "collecting data" being claimed. It looks more like they just discovered the challenges and have no solution or plan. At CitCon 2023 the demo was just a "proof of concept" without them even knowing what would be ahead of them. Furthermore the lack transparency of CIG regarding Server Meshing makes it difficult to believe in the project anymore. So my fear is they just try to milk us as long as possible until they actually have to admit what they already know: SC as an MMO will never become reality. (I hope it is not like that)

I understand. I think it will be successful. There's just a lot more that goes into the network engineering aspect of it than many of us realize. They had a pretty successful test before, but this new server meshing test added in RMQ and also has no Transit and Mission refactors for server meshing. I think we could see more info as soon as 4.0 is in testing

idk if i can agree with the new eva. Its fine but i could fly mock 10 in eva in the past through ships ect no issues.
New eva the ships gravity keeps pulling your body into it and your character i guess automaticly pushes off of surfaces so you just bounce off things constantly which is annoying.

I just assume the character is automaticly pushing off the wall but you can tell the character is moving toward the wall against the path i wanted.
Its not a major thing to me overall just a minor annoyance. I heard they will add the hand crawling at some point which might solve some of the issues.

From 5.25 onwards is just wishful thinking, this time last year they were all shouting yeah, we did it! with regard to server meshing so where is it? Well, it seems it's just being pushed back along with Pyro which is typical CIG and it is getting very tiresome after 10 years of this. Currently we have no evidence that server meshing will fix any stability issues let alone improve any aspect of the game. There should be outrage from the community as to why Pyro and server meshing has been pushed back, but paradoxically there doesn't seem to be any. Moreover, the state of Hull C on release is an absolute disgrace also, and honestly if I didn't have so much invested in this, I'd remove star citizen completely from my PC. I honestly could not in good conscience recommend this to anyone.

Is it worth it in 2024? For me, it is. I like the updates, and have enjoyed playing the game. But it does feel like 4.0 lite. 2024's success ultimately relies on the release of 4.0. Development will not necessarily speed up with Squadron 42 releasing because they'll move on to SQ42 Episode 2 after that. Where development speed increases is having the technical roadblocks gone due to fundamental tech like server meshing in. They have to make sacrifices to get the game at acceptable levels. That becomes less of an issue with server meshing. Also speed increases with the improving of their procedural tools.
I think the issue with community is, is lack of updates. While nice, 3.24 is largely just stuff that didn't make it to 3.23. And 3.23.0 took 6 months. 2 major updates per year isn't enough for the community. The major tech introduced has lead to a bunch of delays. Having been in the community long enough, even the best updates start to wear thin after the first 1-2 months. I will say the uproar over MM is from a largely select few screaming very loudly. Every change to the flight model has always had the community screaming. If there's one thing the community excels at, is whining, drama and overreacting over nothing. But the fact is, it hasn't affected funding.
Core tech takes about a year to fully have an impact. Before 3.23, there wasn't a single piece of core tech introduced since 3.18 (March 2023). So I think we'll really start to see the fruits of labor after the tech is matured enough for release (SQ42, and 4.0's release). So, like every year the next year is, at least, a little better. 2024 is better than 2023. But 2024 isn't as good as 2025. I think CitizenCon 2024 is going to blow people's minds again. But the full effects won't be felt until Q4 2025, possibly into 2026. People just need to accept the content as given now, and make the best of it. Seeing everything coming out, you need to have a long term outlook on it, or you'll frustrate yourself with delays.
After fundamental tech like server meshing, the procedural tools are the biggest gargantuan impediment to speeding up gameplay. They simply have to do more. If they were to release a new star system every quarter, (a development speed unprecedented) it would still take 25 years to get the 100 star systems of content they wanted. They must improve their tools to release 2 star systems every quarter. They're nowhere near that. They have to radically overhaul their development process. I hope this is the major focus of 2025. Somebody needs to convince management of the radical changes in development that need to be made.

I understand the frustration. But what I view quite differently after all these years are that with how ambitious their goals are, and the fact that, for all intents and purposes, I would literally be considered a QA tester that sees the game going through the worst of times during development.
In a normal situation, a developer that didn't have transparent development, would just barely be coming out with brief gameplay trailers to show off a new idea for a game.
You've got games like Beyond Good and Evil 2 that are still in development, and it's been in development longer than many. It's now been over 15 years for that game.

SC has never been a game to play all year. all buggy.
have not played it in 8 years, and i still find SC a mess... it still so messy? all that FREE CASH the got vs frontier alone. ILMAO.. Im still on Elite D. now SC has some good things i want in ED. Waring: have a LONG one to read this hhh:
However ED was build up from the ground as a true 1.1 real sim milky way galaxy and the games mecs, are real sick good work, also the sound is sick, VR is sick. Its in a real good state on Pc now.
It has problems for the future.. i wish Frontier could see they need a fresh team with them now.. now look-- ser.. .the cash SC got and all the CRAZY founding cash they had M and M $$$ ..VS Frontier ED gave me 10 years for 65$ and they did not found their game.
No pain of bugs in gameplay, they are present in all games (bugs), however its so small bugs i see them tre times a year stabil. VS SC,
ED is much weaker on fot /fps shooter mission. However its not in a bad state in 2024 (on foot graphics are the only catch vs SC, actually the dream would be to get frontier som partners and raise some CASH and i would play ED for 30 years more. SC was my dream while playing ED. i just cant get same feeling in my ship and the realism sim from button to top in SC.
Elite D is so much hotter, even Nasa had to look at it. things...during gameplay interesting things happens in elite that is true stuff.
SC can never have this. cuz of the no realism sim build. .. NOW wait that the point here : While Elite D can get there SC are good. they started on the sim. so they need CASH. they did so much. honest servers been up for 10 years and no need to buy any content for cash.
im just glad thy did not shutdown and are coming with a minor update 30.10.24. PLZ FOUND ED. Frontier? find CASH. dont give up the best space sim ever. then plz make ED 2.... WITH THE SAME SIM. just do better for foot shooter and space jumps in a suite. if u have a suite u should be able to drop out of your destroyed ship a lack of ED.
ED no matter what is the best Space sim int the whole world and in our galaxy
