    Always turn the car on and precondition the battery while it’s still plugged in with such low temps.

    The reason the car briefly went into turtle mode may have been the 12 volt battery being cold. After 5 years my 12 volt battery started to die. The first day I went into turtle mode with the main battery at 48% and the second day the car refused to move at a stoplight on a hill. After about 10 minutes it ran fine as it there was no problem, but in the meanwhile the state patrol pushed me off the road onto level ground. I had not been in turtle mode but it just went into Service Propulsion Unit. But after 10 minutes I was able to drive home just fine. The next day I drove to the store and bought a new 12 volt battery and have had no problems since.
    It does not get as cold here and the lowest I have seen is 15 above, but normally I am doing my morning commute in 25-35 winter temps. I primarily use the seat heater and just have the cabin heat to 60 with minimal fan to keep the windows clear.
    I enjoy the car very much and in just two years I have only paid for window washer fluid and the 12 volt battery.

    • @OvalboreCars
      @OvalboreCars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have found when I am running my heat, if I put the heat on circulate were it is not drawing outside air it can use less battery. The coldest I have driven my car has be -18*, and my range was about the 50 miles also. Thanks for letting me know about the cruise control idea, I will start using that.

    • @OvalboreCars
      @OvalboreCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I cannot figure out a way with the climate control to keep the heater from turning on. every time its 'on' at any temperature, the range drops 6-8 miles.. even if I have it at a temperature where the heater is not needed.
      I wish these had the standard HVAC controls with more control over heater output and AC usage.

  • @bnkwupt

    It would be very helpful to have the GPS unit installed so we could see how much power the cabin heater and battery heater are consuming. Thanks for making this cold weather video.
    You'll also get better range in the winter time if you start the car with it plugged in for 10 minutes before you drive off. This will preheat the cabin and the battery using (mostly) shore power instead of draining your battery.

    • @OvalboreCars
      @OvalboreCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do keep an eye out for a used 500e tomtom. I know its an 8,000W unit, and I doubt its variable, so every time the climate is on and heating, it's like cruising the car at 60mph on the highway just to heat the cabin
      yes, thats true, however, I'm not the type to go out to my car twice on a cold morning.

    Dude! *Just* found this. I sleep in Eagan, live in Mpls. 2015 500e. Rock solid. I went from the Yokahmas to Roadhuggers; I blew out now fewer than three sidewalls on Hiawatha. Traction's fine, squishier but tougher so far, and cheaper. I love the car, but not knowing how the batteries work, exactly, is scary. Agreed; 45 mile range is about right for cold days... if you don't let it sit outside all day trying to warm itself up.

    Great info for us 500e owners. I live in the Minneapolis area too. I charge my Fiat inside my garage with a level 1 charger and at worst during the sub-zero days am getting 45-50 mile range with heater on. As soon as we get back to 10 deg plus days I start seeing better range. My commute is 10 miles r/t so even winter range works for me. Question: Is it true that a level 2 charger while charging heats/primes the battery pack? This is something I read about in the Fiat 500 Madness forum.

    • @OvalboreCars
      @OvalboreCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not an engineer, but I would honestly say 'no' on that one.
      I have left the car unplugged outside after fully charging for a week in below zero temps, and the battery loses at best 1%/day.
      I have also tried leaving it plugged in, unattended for a week in the same weather and come out to the car similarly low on battery.
      The car seemingly will not pull power to condition the battery at 10 below 0 when plugged in.
      However, when the key is turned on and the cord is plugged in, the car will top off the pack (or try to) even while heating.

    Awesome video! I live a little further north of you and this would the normal for us for a month or two out of the year. Last year in the summer I had been in the process of importing one but the deal fell through so I'm waiting for this year's influx of lease returns so hopefully I can get the one I want.
    I was under the impression that one could preheat/precool the car while it's plugged in, and if so, how much of a difference do you think that would have made on both the range and the Limited Power Mode?
    Also, it doesn't look like your model has the sunroof, but in your opinion, in a climate like ours, would it be silly to get one with a sunroof?

    • @OvalboreCars
      @OvalboreCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can if the car is less than 3 years old and FCA is willing to transfer the account ownership to you. CURRENTLY after 3 years of age, you cannot precondition the car or the battery.
      If you are taller than 6 feet, dont even consider the sunroof, and if you're hardcore about range, also don't consider the sunroof.
      I have two 500s at the moment, and I vastly prefer the non glass roof.

    About to go look at this down here at a dealer in Florida. Seeing this work as well as it did in those freezing temps makes me think this car will work for me. Although, when it is warm up there how does the car perform with range (90°F+)? Reason is down here this summer was a hot one. Constant days of 90 plus.
    Also another question, I commute about 12 miles total trip for my job to my home. And it’s about 67 miles to my parents house, how would those trips look? Doable? Lowest temp down here is normally 45 and that’s at night during our short winter. The one I am looking to purchase is a 2016 500e with 8,000 miles. Thanks for taking my questions! I am considering purchasing a Fiat 500e as a 3rd car. I live in the Twin Cities area as well where we can get quite a cold snap once in a while. When it is -10F, what does the interior feel like with the seat heaters on and the main cabin heat fully on? Does it ever get comfortable, or does it just feel bearable? Also do the windows frost up? In my case I would be driving it just 5 miles each way to/from work, so the penalty in driving distance is not of concern to me. I am kind of spoiled at the moment because my ICE car puts out a lot of heat.

    • @OvalboreCars
      @OvalboreCars  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the heater is more powerful than the gas 500, so getting the cabin to 90 isn't an issue. range takes a significant hit though.
      Usually when its cold out, I'll leave cabin heat set at 60 degrees just to abuse the battery as little as possible.
      preheating the car when its plugged in to a 7.2kW Level 2 is where it's at. doesnt' pull car battery, and once the cabin is up to temperature, the additional power needed to maintain that level of heat is negligible.
      If the HVAC is off, the windows do fog. heated seat only has one setting, which is enough, but I wish it were hotter.
      WORST case with a healthy 500E, even if you leave it set at 90 degrees with everything on is 35-40 miles. If you're sensible and preheat the car, you should be able to get 50+ miles out of a winter batt. 70+ with a highway heavy mix in the 40+ weather.
      my car has the most degraded battery of any 500e in the owners group at 70k miles, about 26% lost capacity, my commute is 10.2 miles each way, and I can usually still do it almost twice on the worst days of the year.

      @@OvalboreCars Thank you for your real world experience. Pleased to hear that the cold weather usage of the Fiat 500e sounds acceptable. Degradation of 26% loss at 70K miles seems to be excessive. I wonder if you will be able to have a warranty claim on the battery pack.

      probably not on the worst days. You guys dont get as cold, as we do, but you get as much snow. Chicago drivers also cruise a bit faster due to the much wider roads. winter, you'd really have to be managing your speed. 90% of days, 44 miles of highway is easy peasy, but once you start heating the cabin and the battery, it plummets quick. on a -38 degree day with no snow, I saw as low as 35 miles of range usable.

[edit: Sorry, question is answered in the video.] When I was looking for a used EV in 2020 (it would be my very first EV) I _almost_ went with a 500e but discovered that they did not offer DC fast charging even as an option. :( Anyway, I ended up with a 2016 Kia Soul EV+ and it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. @@OvalboreCars The 500e would make a great second car even with those limitations (my wife and I both work only about 10 miles away from where we live). If it had a DC Fast charge port I very likely would have ended up with it instead because, at least at the time I was looking (late 2019-early 2020), prices for them were well below $10,000, with many being in the $5000-$8000 range. One big issue with the Soul EV is its boxy shape, but luckily I don't do very many highway miles. One thing I do know for certain is that I will never go back to an ICE vehicle. Driving my wife's 1996 Camry is like getting back together with your ex-wife, if I had one! An "ex", that is. Literally every person who has had a ride in my EV, modest as it is with only 109 equivalent horsepower, has said that their next car will be an EV, especially after I calm their fears about what it's like to actually LIVE with an EV by answering their questions (and squashing misinformation about how long batteries last, etc).

      You can do anything with the car while it is plugged in except change gears. So you can start the car and turn on the heater/AC, radio, etc but cannot put it into drive or reverse until the charge cable is unplugged. I don't believe it drains the battery doing this but I live in south Texas so the temperatures are not too cold. It looks like the heater uses 1-1.5kw (found on google) after its started and you can safely get 1.8kw from a standard 110 outlet so as long as nothing else is using the circuit or you have a larger than 15amp breaker your battery should not dip below 99% charge. I have not noticed the battery dip below 99% even after the heater has been running for 20-30 minutes while plugged into a standard 110 outlet.

      I have a 220 32 amp charger and it still looses percent when im running the heater and seats while plugged in.

      Yea, I'm not sure why it does that. For mine at least (2014), even if I just open the door it will drop to 99% while still plugged in. It doesn't ever drop any further though so I assume its no big deal and does not seem to actually impact the range. It is slow coming but I'm also getting a 220v outlet installed for car charging. The 110v has actually been able to cover the regular commutes perfectly but if we drive it any more than work and home it needs a little extra juice and 110v is just way too slow. Plus we should be getting our Tesla Model 3 in the next 3'ish months and will need the faster charger for sure.

      then the car is managing your battery too -- the heater and heated seat should be able to run on a reasonable level and not consume batt power on top.

      Agree with Dan Sertich here, this is a VERY affordable (and I believe the cheapest you can buy) EV Hene193. So cheap in fact that it saves enough just in the gas alone that it literally pays for the low $100 a month car payment... Although there is still a bit of a price difference between sub 100-mile range EV's and long range EV's but they are coming around.

      Fiat 500 2008 with 130k miles goes for 6000 euros where I live. It's not at that point yet where I can just go out and buy one for fun. Like 500e with 30k miles (2014) costs 19k.
      Maybe one day I can buy used tesla for 10 grand and then have fun by ripping off all the safety and just drifting in snow.
