It was obvious he HATED himself for letting Fidget run off with Olivia. And BOTH of them were smarting from being out-hustled by what amounted to a not-that-smart mook. But he forgives him, and none too soon, because Dawson had the key piece of evidence all along!
It's especially poignant when you realize that Dawson was a surgeon in a war zone and probably has PTSD from losing men to wounds and whose heart is breaking now thinking that he has failed to save another person. And a child to make it worse

At the beginning he is conceited. Then again, he is always by himself. He DOES warm up near the end. Him snatching Olivia from the clockwork mechanism tells as much. Proabably the most likeable 'Sherlock' rendition we'll ever get.

To tell the truth- Barrie Ingham did a great job and a much better job on providing the voice of Basil of Baker Street because he acted professionally as the voice of the great mouse detective in this film while Maurice LaMarche acted unprofessionally as the voice of him in Disney’s House of Mouse.
Barrie Ingham (rest in peace) will always be Basil's voice. I do wonder if any British voice actor could top this performance, although probably not, but I would give David Tennant (from the DuckTales reboot) a chance.
The thing I love most about this scene is that while Basil lost his temper and was angry that Fidget got away with Olivia, he was just as quick to realize he'd hurt Dr. Dawson with his words and was genuinely remorseful and tried to comfort and cheer up his friend. I also love how caring Basil is about both Dr. Dawson and Olivia
@TimberlakeTigerGirl So while indeed Basil is definitely very intelligent with his knowledge on many things, what makes him a Slytherin to me is ultimately his determination. Both Ravenclaw and Slytherin have similarities, being interested in smarts and working on your talents. But Slytherin's are known for their drive and wanting to succeed in their goals. While Ravenclaws of course can absolutely want this, they tend to be more interested in learning and booksmarts just because they are curious and find fulfillment in that. For Basil, his goal from the start is to find and take down Ratigan, that's why he us so ecstatic and has energy of the new findings, to reach his ultimate goal. And this is especially shown with how sad he was when he thought he'd lost him, and his excitement at hearing that Olivia's father was taken by Ratigan's right hand man. So Basil taking the case less about helping a young child and more about finally having a chance to take down his nemesis... yeah, he's a Slytherin 😄
You what's funny fidget looks terrifying in the begin and when she kidnaps Oliva and her dad but he doesn't even look that scary when his face isn't close to the screen.
It sounds like the "Mama!"s of the doll Basil got caught in the pullstring of were supplied by Frank Welker. It sounds a lot like Gogo Dodo from "Tiny Toons" or Baby Skeeter from "Muppet Babies."
When I was little, somehow I thought that Olivia was not captured by the Fidget and repeatedly saying "Mama", not the the doll. Lol! 🤭😂 What a foggy thought I had back then.
