Some additional thoughts/information if you’re interested:
Grow kits are overrated… This isn’t my TEK, but it is my favorite one. It’s a roughly replicated of “BOD's Easy AF UnBODified Monotub” tek. Thank you Bods! Mushroom growing is likely far easier than you might think, if you haven’t tried it yourself.
From start to finish, mushrooms can be grown faster than fruits & vegetables (with the exception of Microgreens, of course, mushrooms have protein though). They require less energy, maintenance, and water to grow too (they like the same temperatures humans do), making them have lower climate impact than most farming/gardening. Also easier to grow indoors, as climate change accelerates and makes outdoors less favorable for growing plants. Coco Coir actually absorbs Carbon Dioxide too, making it a pretty environmentally conscious source of substrate, not to mention you can inoculate with colonized grain/rice in open air, no vent hood required.

Shoeboxes and pure coco substrate is the easiest for me.
Shoeboxes must be ideal for most people’s needs, including my own. Everything would be so much easier, more economical, less waste, still get multiple flushes. Not too mention less of a loss if contamination hits. I’ll definitely be more focused on small grows in future videos.
Jar growing, Ben’s tek, reusing “single use plastic” containers, definitely more practical for the average homegrower. Not to mention lower risk on all levels.
Appreciate the comment, and the wisdom. I’m sure I failed to mention this can be scaled down to any size, and that is a critical point to realize for any independent subsistence homegrower. Thank you!
@@floki-man I feel like if you do the shoebox and fill it up like at least 2/3 full having the lid closer helps. Kinda like how side pins grow. Having the lid closer to the substrate and that smaller gap to lid creates good conditions. At least in my case. Mush love
P.s. For those new to the shoebox method after cracking the lid to induce pinning I will leave that lid on and let the mushrooms grow up to the lid and sometimes leave the lid and let them push it up but if they are gonna big, once they hit the top I will do the dub tub technique and mist the top tub.

Love the method, gonna give it a shot. Some advice… I know they were side pins and a bit hard to get but you’ll find all mushrooms come off a lot cleaner and easier if you twist them ‘Counterclockwise’. I learned that the hard way, my very 1st substrate was mangled and the 2nd one I twisted counter and they came off like a dream. Thanks for the video! ❤️🍄❤️
I completely submerge my subs in COLD water for at least an hour after each flush. It seems to shock them into fruiting again quicker and also rehydrates them. Side pins can be minimized by lining your tote with black plastic...not to block light but as the sub shrinks, it will stick to plastic instead of leaving a gap, discouraging pins.
@7munkee Nice, I imagine cold water would be fine for this too, possibly better. Do you use unmodified tubs as well?
I think the original tek suggested warm. Viscosity of water may not change that much warm vs cold. The stumps do pull in a lot of water, and it does start to sink without submerging.
Absolutely agree the key to side pin prevention is preventing a gap from forming around substrate, it’s very easy to fill & pack gaps with coir/casing material as substrate shrinks.
I think there’s no real need for plastic liners if you can check tubs regularly.

Sure, it could work. I do wonder if a valve would hold and hide enough water/bacteria to cause contamination if you can’t clean it well. Maybe just a rubber/cork plug would be enough. Easy to use and clean. Thanks for watching, and sharing ideas! Much appreciated!

Every human has the right to take care of themselves nutritionally and mentally at the lowest possible cost, especially when our governments and corporations are working their hardest to get rich fast above all else.

Small bread knife, it is my favorite out of all knives i own. Great for anything from cutting meat to harvesting mushies. Bread knives are serrated but with larger serrations which is great for softer materials like tomatoes.
@mooseBanner absolutely. I thought initially just super sharp smooth blade would be best, just binds up. Serrated is the magic for mushrooms.
I’ve purchased 14” blade chefs bread knife for sourdough breads, might be real quick for harvests. Razor sharp

Hey, 3:18 just a tip, you want to use as cold as possible water because it tells the mycelium that it is winter, time to freeze, but then it quickly warms up and they think it is a spring thaw happening.
They come back in much stronger force if you use cold or ice water while rehydrating them, then just drain it all off and let em warm up.
I suppose you could also chill the substrate with refrigeration/freezer briefly to achieve the same thing after soaking and draining?

Lovely growing. My opinion is the side pins are where there is more moisture and light. More misting on top.
I think testing direct solar heating during colonization kept edges warmer than core too, colonized faster than core.
PS: Thank you for not being the thousandth person to say liners is the only way to grow.
@@floki-man Just trial and error for me, I tried painting the lower 1/3 of the tub black on the outside.
@andyroo3022 paint seems easiest for sure. I do like being able to see the whole substrate though. May see a green spot earlier, and have a better chance of saving a tub.
I put bubble wrap on top after mixing grains in subsrate to mimic leaves on forest floor. By the way the substrate will shrink because shrooms are sucking all moisture out of it.👍✌️🤙
Nice, cool idea for sure. Agreed it will shrink, but if I’d packed it tighter in this tub it would’ve shrunk less. Probably would’ve been half the substrate thickness shown here.

So soak the cake before harvesting might get you in 100 club sooner! niiice Mr. BlueThumb has a tek where he took a couple bbq/kabob skewers and shoved them through the cake to allow the side pins to grow more after the harvest... and it worked great!

The one that had mostly side pins, the rounder pointed caps, is Roatan Honduras. Beautiful in appearance, the effects were not my favorite at all. A bit higher anxiety trips.
The mushrooms Forest is a B++ strain (probably same as B+… the supplier labels said ++). That strain is amazing. Almost calming like cannabis, very comfortable trips routinely. Great for microdosing with coffee in the morning.
Use a black liner, or liner of some sort. Color really don’t matter. But also a liner will help with the micro climate and focus energy to the top of the cake for your pin set. Just my two cents hope it helps. Wasn’t trying to insult you just trying to help. A fellow Military veteran whose hobby is myco-life for treatment of my ptsd.
Yeah, I know that’s standard approach. But it’s also really not necessary if the coir/substrate is well packed initially. Honestly I’m surprised there haven’t been more comments about this, usually get all the “experts” scolding me pretty quickly. Definitely not insulted, and it’s certainly a valid option. I just prefer keeping it simple, using less plastic when I can. Glad you found mycology too, it’s an amazing hobby more veterans would benefit greatly from learning. @@floki-man for maximum efficiently would you guys prefer liners even though its not needed? wondering if its a waste of time, liners promoting micro climates and bigger pin yields makes alot of sense if its shooting all the co2/oxygen upwards since it has no where else to go even when the cake starts to shrink. im only interested in high yield and also do you guys see a big difference when you use perilite or not when fruiting ?
@@floki-man my first run my cakes shriveled alot and i got major side pin clusters on both, ill deffinitely give it a better pack next time, and someone should create an organic liner company for mushrooms lol because youre right about the plastic especially with heat introduced. yuck
Maybe misting more frequently, or reducing fresh air exchange would help reduce shrinkage too.
I think liners are a waste of time and plastic, and interesting you bring up CO2: coco coir actually sequesters/stores/absorbs CO2, which may also be why coco coir works so well in unmodified tubs. Misting and fanning every 12 hours when fruiting. Doesn’t get much easier than that.

Much more on the way, and always with the objective of making it as simple and affordable as possible. Spores, grains, and coir should be the only supplies you need to purchase regularly….But maybe you don’t even need to buy grains if you can sterilize use old expired leftover rice for grain spawn… so much left to explore and share.

I vehemently disagree that this is the simplest method. That honor belongs to bag cultivation 100%, with the spawn to bulk and complete neglect tek till harvest method. Dunking is a breeze as well, simply add water to the bag and pour out when finished, zip-tie closed and neglect again till the next harvest.

Btw, as far as knives go for harvesting your cake, a bread knife works wonders!
I generally avoid buying non-reusable plastic, why I prefer jars and tubs. I’m sure the bags can probably be reused too. Just haven’t purchased any myself so far.
I believe you about bread knife, I purchased a 14” professional bread knife to try and harvest in 1 pass in future.

@@floki-man you are correct in your assumption, the bags can be reused several times. I run 16 at a time, and about 2yrs ago I ran an experiment as to whether they can be re-used, and how many times. I washed them in the sink with hot water and Dawn dish soap. It worked like a charm! I re-used all 16 for a dozen runs, after that I retired them. Im sure they could be used more, but I felt that was sufficient for my experiment. There was no rise in tam rate, and both the bags and filter patches held up.
how many grams did you get out of that bigger harvest? that's a giant pile of mushrooms lol. would you say that's about 1 pound dry?
It was surprising how quickly it felt like that pile grew. Honestly couldn’t tell you the harvest total, hadn’t even thought about it in a while.
Now that I’ve thought about it, I do think I remember filming total weight just decided not to include it. Less commercial focused more subsistence.
Can’t guarantee anything, maybe a sequel to this is due answering the unanswered questions like this, maybe other footage I didn’t include

Amigo, you should edit this video because the comment that, "you should wait till you see the veil start to tear to harvest them," is very bad advice.
See, some strains can grow up to another 4 inches after the veil tears. I have seen it. The best thing to do is to keep an eye on them and wait till the cap starts to open up a bit after it completely stops growing outward. Also, it is good to completely understand the particular mushroom strain that you are dealing with and how it grows.
I said what I said because I wished I’d harvested a day or 2 earlier when less spores had dropped. No edits needed. You’re not wrong either. Thanks for watching

This TEK (original found titled “Bods TEK”)Made growing so much easier in my experience. Super low contamination risk (until after a couple flushes…if you don’t dry it enough after harvesting risk increases hard, people suggesting drain holes may also realize that would help drain excess water for days reducing contamination risks further).
Also super low maintenance fruiting (zero maintenance when colonizing, unless you notice dry spots (unlikely)). Can potentially check, mist, fan as infrequently as every 24 hours (definitely check every 12 hours when possible, don’t stress if you can’t).
Especially in dry climates, like lower than 30-40% humidity, this is so easy. When I tried to use shotgun fruiting chamber with PF TEK in Albuquerque New Mexico (high desert climate), misting even 7-8 times a day seemed in adequate. Only fruited at interface between cake and foil (highest humidity area).

A good chefs knife that is properly sharpened is worlds better than a serrated knife in all situations.
I thought so too, until I tried it on a floating substrate forest. I think blade thickness is a major factor when cutting grippy things. The tapered steel of a chefs knife binds up when you’re cutting greater depth than blade. Since full edge thicker than cutting edge.
@@floki-manTry an opinel pocketknife, they're very thin carbon steel with no secondary bevel, so you don't get the wedging effect of a thick knife. Also easy to sharpen. I always carry one going intoo the woods looking for mushrooms.😊

Thanks for watching! Yeah, some stuff left behind, I could’ve cut lower. But you also risk having dirty stumps to clean sub off of if you cut too low.
Microclimate is as simple as: with stumps there, air is a bit more stagnant, so may have higher humidity than above the stumps. Which can encourage new pinning. Kind of like a casing layer.

Nice full canopy! What’s the substrate recipe?
it says cvg. Coco, vermiculite and gypsum. I've had plenty great flushes with pure coco coir.
I primarily only use coco coir, mixed with about 4x coir weight. Water volume varies slightly with different coir suppliers, check field capacity as you can. Put coir in cooler box, dump measured amount of boiling water into coir (cooler box tek) add boiling water, wait overnight. Impossible to get wrong, unless your scale is off… video demonstrating this process will be on the way.
I may have added some vermiculite in tubs in this video to get rid of my last bit from PF TEK days. Today, 100% coir.

I've tried cutting them but for me the stumps turns to black slime mess. I rather pull them and dunk my substrate after I pick them. I don't want my shrooms to contain anymore moisture then need be
I’m sorry you had that experience. Sounds like you soaked too long or didn’t let it dry long enough. Don’t blame the tek for your errors.

Could be as simple as uneven misting. I started using a pressure sprayer rather than normal household spray bottle.

@electrobeats759 absolutely, check and fan a little 1-2 times a day. Mist bed fan if anything looks dry, or if substrate looks dry pour a little water down sides to kind of “bottom water” if you don’t want to get caps too wet. If once a day is all you can do, it’s pretty forgiving at fruiting.

Pinning, fruiting are basically the same with this tek. Check tub every 12 hours if you can, mist a little, fan a little. If it looks dry every 12 hours, mist a little more, fan the same. It’s very very forgiving too. The crack from having the lid on upside down seems to maintain a perfect humidity level for me, I think I’ve gone over 24 hours without checking once fruited, didn’t really look like they missed me at all.
My ambient humidity can be as low as 10-20%, so low FAE helps a lot. Higher ambient humidity, maybe you only need to check every 24 hours. Or maybe you need to fan twice as much. A small hygrometer/humidity monitor will help remove the guess factor for you.
I have been trying to fruit my tub for 3 weeks and not even a pin I have pictures of my tub can someone please look at them I’ll send them and tell me what is going on
I don’t think anyone will be able to help from pictures alone. If the mycelium is all white and healthy, and you don’t have gnats/fruit flies around, then hopefully it’s not contaminated.
Try changing your conditions if you can. Put it somewhere cooler if can. If it’s already cool, try somewhere warmer. Easier than temperature, try adjusting humidity. You can buy relatively cheap hygrometer/humidity meters almost anywhere. 70% average should typically be what you’re looking for. May help to ensure adequate lighting too, but that’s not critical for pinning.

If you use a black liner bag you won't get side pins
False. Just means you can see them. I realize it’s common practice, I just don’t see it. I may do a tub with a liner just to prove to everyone you’ll still get side pins.

Great question, primarily so I could reuse the water. It’s a lot of volume when you live in the desert. Our trees love harvest time. Another option: I could have just taken the tub outside on a table to water trees directly by siphon. Less stop/start & choking on water.

Will there be new growth from the stems??
Absolutely. Just need to make sure you let it get back to lower moisture/humidity, maybe skip misting a few days or more and keep fanning. May not get another full canopy, but you can keep going till you feel you’ve grown enough and yield isn’t justifying continued maintenance, or until you see green/other contamination. The creator of the TEK claimed to get 4 or more full canopy’s, but he used more substrate and packed it tighter than I did.
If you start having gaps form around substrate, between coir and tub, pack gap with coir/vermiculite/other naturally sterile substrate to reduce space for side-pins micro climate to form.
Will have much more to share about the whole process as I can, demonstrating & explaining from start to finish how I did this, and what I could do better.

Never. This couldn’t be more gentle. And even if it broke in 3 pieces, it wouldn’t matter. Just place them back together and they grow like before. They’ll reconnect. What’s the concern with breaking it? If cakes as small as PFtek make fruits, why not broken slabs?
@LT.Goodman really just out of curiosity to be honest. Making it crack on purpose once you've gotten a few flushes might not be a bad idea even. If it's already pinning on the sides, why not give it more surface area? Can't hurt if you have a few tubs going to try it on one and test it side by side.
what ratio of coir to spawn are you using in that monster crop?
pretty low, I think I show it in the video. No more than 4 quart jars for the 650g coir. could've done more coir for sure. Im a patient grower. Keep temps low for fruiting, and your patience will be rewarded while minimizing contamination risk. increases concentration of active ingredients in harvest too. use with caution.

Side pins are from using no liner. The liner is supposed to shrink with the substrate preventing moisture on the side. The light thing is a debunked myth.
If you fill any gaps that form with coir, you do the same thing. If you pack the inoculated substrate tighter, less shrinkage. Liners are not necessary, for me.

What’s your spawn to substrate ratio
@ItsCheechFool I used about 4 x 0.66 quart jars spawn for 1 x 650g brick coir. Could’ve probably used 2 bricks coir and same grain spawn and had similar results. Once it starts colonizing coir it can progress pretty quickly. I didn’t pack these tubs as tightly as I should have. If I had, it would’ve been pretty thin. Hence 2 brick recommendation.
Can always use more or less spawn. More = faster. But prepping more jars may not be worth the time saved colonizing.
Of course, If you’re in a real hurry, just fruit straight from spawn jars.
It’s all very flexible, and coir is very easy to work with. Hope this helps.

@@floki-man in botany I learned that if you don’t pack it just lightly level the soil leave it lightly and the root system will suck up the extra space. So once it actually have a root ball it becomes compact. Packing it beforehand could lead to slowed growth premature growth etc. does the same apply for mycology ?
@ItsCheechFool just saw your replies: flushes, may only get 2-3 flushes before they’re kid of sporadic, but you can keep harvesting as long as you feel it’s worth maintaining the Tub. Each flush smaller than the last of course.
Mycology is quite different from plants as far as soil/substrate. Once the mycelium colonizes the substrate, it will be very possible for it to start shrinking. Packing tightly is best with coir, and you’ll get double the substrate in if you pack it, which may double yield.
The substrate cake will also be stronger if packed tighter. So easier to handle/flip when harvesting if you want to look for side/bottom fruits.
You said the stumps left behind from harvesting creates the perfect microclimate? I've always heard that it's bad to leave the stumps because it will cause contamination. That's about the one thing I hate about this community. There's so much contradicting information it's hard for me to really like go off of somebody's text because you're here like you say this and then turn around and hear other people say it will cost contamination and for me if I just had to get the supplies, learned the most basic concepts of cultivating mushrooms, and just took off. By the way I'm not doubting what you say I'm actually doubting everyone else because it never really made sense that a mushroom would contaminate itself. Idk great job on the b+ though that was a helluva flush. 🍄❤️
That’s why I recommended a great book that’s a reliable reference in the description by Paul Stamets. He gives you all the research and references you could want, and helps cut through the BS.
I 100% understand your frustration. I will never claim to be an expert, and I’m simply sharing my experiences. Try for yourself, contamination is easy to spot. Growing is easy and cheap, you can do it again using your old leftovers (rice, pasta, bread, etc) for grain spawn too. Keep it simple and you’ll find satisfaction quickly. Thank you for sharing. I am trying to be a kinder mycologist than those I’ve experienced online myself. Facebook groups are pointless hell. Avoid posting there anyway. More hate than help.

You’d be smart. More variety too. Main advantage of big tub is I can attach grow light to lid, they’re not too short.
Can still just place small boxes in a big box like a grow chamber when you get to fruiting. No need for multiple small lids, faster misting and fanning all together. Easier to maintain at and between harvests. Easier to dry after soaking in smaller volumes. Do it.

@@hoobaguy I’d probably just buy/find the cow #2, easier to control hydration, probably has less odor. I also have had no issues with coir, which is cheap, produces reliably without contamination, and not only has no smell, but it sequesters CO2, so it’s like having an air scrubber in your home. If you’re trying to increase concentration of active compounds in mushrooms, grow as cool temperatures as you can. Cold colonization and grows makes any substrate produce better fruits, in my experience and from what I read.
