    Eating foods high in protein, green veggies salads with spinach, less carbs, and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar a day, and exercise has helped me lose my belly fat. You need to cut down on sugar and carb intake, especially carbs. Get rid of foods with high fructose corn syrup, no soda pop or junk foods! Eat good fats like walnuts, raw almonds, raw nuts, avocados in moderation. I'm going to be 57 this month and doing intermittent fasting has helped me so much, I feel much better!! Planks do help among other exercises out there. Don't ever be discouraged with losing belly fat. It will happen when you work at it!! You got this!! 👍👏😁

Do I think someone will find me sexy looking tired all the time, puffy, bloated, facial breakouts, and wearing ice packs on my head in bed every night??? 😮🤣 Probably not! But seriously... Menopause & loss are easier to deal with if you up the protein & down the sugar. Helps weight loss & balances your mood. Even so, if you need a sedating agent to help you sleep, take it, for the sake of your mood. Insomnia is a real issue.

      pemayangdon74 I’m 66 , 5’5 and 120 lbs. Heme iron protein....grass fed beef, fatty cuts of meat, saturated fat for good cholesterol and hormone production like butter. Vegetable carbs and berries. High fat raw milk, full fat yogurt, one or two ounces of imported cheeses from countries that know the importance of local grasses for cows, fermented veggies like kimchi and sauerkraut. Satiation is the key. High carbs like corn chips, potato chips and excessive popcorn or sweets with high fat spike insulin, saturate the blood with glucose and store in fat cells, never to be released until the glucose empties. No cravings for sweets when I keep the protein and fat at a good level. Don’t believe the lies about saturated fat.

      A big difference for me was cutting sugars and alcohol. I have followed a vegan and mostly anti-inflammatory diet for 19 years. However, I've always had a sugar addiction problem and was raised by alcoholics in denial. Soooo, those 2 were hard. Since giving those up (Mostly... TBH I eat fruit and drink 4 cocktails/year) my belly has shrunk. That being said, I've had 3 children and 4 pregnancies, so that "mom belly" is very resistant to work. Understanding where the transverse abdominals (I hope I got the name right!) are and focusing on engaging them is helping. I am 51, and due to a health issue have difficulty eating (I suppose that helps, but being underweight can be exhausting!) and getting the protein I need is hard! Enough protein is critical to building muscle mass. Even if you are not attempting to bulk up, sufficient protein is important to building the inner core. Lastly (sorry to go on!!) I think many exercises do not explain the deep abdominal muscles well. I think that is also important. Keep up your good work and enjoy those horses (my daughters both rode, until the pandemic and subsequent brokeness of many of us. We miss the horse time! It is pretty damn good at lowering cortisol)

    I would LOVE a "Doctor" to prescribe what to do for menopause belly fat for the over 60!!! What are you? 40's? This is all well and excellent advice and with the exception of sleep - my whole life I've only ever averaged 5 to 6 hrs sleep a night - when you're 40 or 50. But once you turn 60, watch out. None of this really works. I've never had children but you wouldn't be able to tell looking at me with the tire, apron belly, back fat, etc!!! My body always responded well to proper nutrition, balanced diet and exercise routine. Post menopause is not the same and VERY discouraging.

    Great info! I just turned 46 last month and my metabolism is finally slowing down. This provoked a lot of frustration so I began to do a good bit of research and while everything you are saying sounds great, I have heard the opposite about doing HIIT. The reasoning behind this is that it increases you're cortisol. I spent the entire summer trying to get rid of the stubborn 10 pounds I had put on my midsection over winter and once I finally accepted this theory it seemed to help! I now just keep a cardio pace that is comfortable and does not cause too much exertion. This took a very long time for me to finally embrace and adapt to as this is not how is not how I typically trained in the past but it really helped me! :)

    • @drkristieennis
      @drkristieennis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thank you for sharing! I also do lower intensity cardio:) but I add in some interval work and strength training 3 x a week. I should clarify that I was talking about interval training in general and using HIIT as an example because so many people have heard that term:) really, it’s just breaking out of doing the same routine, at the same pace, especially if you have reached a plateau.

    It's a choice like anything, especially when it comes to attitude and priorities. As an older petite woman, it's definitely challenging but I focus on healthy eating i.e. mostly veggies and chicken or fish, very little dairy. No flour or sugar because it made me sluggish and bloated. It's hard but worth it when you wake up with energy. A defeatist attitude will absolutely drain you. I do weights at home daily for 20 minutes and walk after dinner which ends by 6 PM. Find what works for you but don't give up. My dad died from dementia and heart disease and my genetics are bad but that is not a guarantee I will have the same ending if I do my best for my own health. Menopause can be a minor inconvenience if you make an effort to take care of your mind and body.

    I am sitting here on the verge of tears because I am in perimenopause (I think...might be full blown at this point, I'm 53yo) and it seems like within a month I've put on 15 pounds...all in my belly. I went from a size 4 in pants to now only being able to wear pajama pants or jeggings comfortably (and by the end of the day, the jegging waist band is irritating). I want to also add I had back surgery in January of this year, I had my L5 disc removed, a titanium disc inserted, and was on basically NO range of motion for 3 months. Now that I'm able to do more, WHABAM!!!! I am miserably uncomfortable, my sleep is trash, don't even get me started on the hot flashes. 10'ish minutes long, 20-30 times a day...ad nauseum. Hearing Dr. Ennis break down why this happened so fast, it's refreshing but emotional. Thank you for making me realize I'm not losing my mind...THANK YOU

      In my case it is also coming home from a very busy workday and I am always on my feet at work. A yoga ball actually has introduced some more fun into exercising, even sitting exercises on the yoga ball can be totally great.
      Furthermore I have a bad knee that off and on gives me trouble, a so so back , sometimes good sometimes not, and lately a shoulder problem on one side that makes me stear away from weight exercises. I really want to not stress those places too much.
      So right now I do a basic exercise regime with arm and leg weights to get at least a little bit of strength training in.

    Kind of a serious question kind of a silly question about follicle stimulating hormone. Any chance it also affects fat gain on the back of the thighs because I kid you not, I woke up one morning and I had a fat pouch on my admomen and the back of my thighs just look gross. I am active, I do cardio dance at the least 3 times a week and work with light weights I have cut out alcohol and meat and most dairy this was before menopause but seriously it just seems like over night my body melted into something I am not used to and I don't like it

      Fibromyalgia is a very tough disease ☹️ I work with a lot of patients dealing with this. What I have found to help is gentle myofascial release, heat (especially a sauna), gentle range of motion and stretching, and in clinic I do dry needling. If you need more help, let me know and we can always do a video chat.

      That’s a great point with regards to sugar. While some people are sensitive to some foods, like dairy, and others aren’t, sugar affects everyone. From a diet standpoint, that is the first thing I have people work on eliminating.

    how often would you suggest doing the abdominal exercises you showed?

    Your exercises @ the end...okay to do with Diastasis recti? I’ve had 5 C-sections...don’t want to do more damage; trying to firm it up...seems like I’ll never get there. 🙁

      I know what you mean! I had a high diastasis after my pregnancy. The key thing is to keep the lower abdominals engaged and not push the abdominals out. I usually start planks on the knees. Typically supine, I start with engaging the deep muscles and adding marching and bent knee fall outs. Hope that makes sense! I do plan on doing a video for distasis so keep your eyes open for that:)
