Thank you for this video. We had a house built 2 years ago and have had moisture and bugs coming out from under our free standing tub. After watching your video I understand why. The margin around the drain was exposed allowing moisture and critters to come up from under the slab. Also, the drain was installed with no gasket or plumbers putty which allowed water to leak under the slab, and lastly there was no indication that the drain tube was lubricated before installing. Thanks to your video I'll be reinstalling the tub the correct way!
Again Isaac, you relate very well to the average Joe. You communicate on a level we can all understand and you NEVER come off as condescending or as a “know-it-all”. I wish all contractors were as humble. God bless.
This is super helpful since I am planning to install a freestanding tub in my Master Bath end of this year. I have to do this on my own. This gives me much more comfort/confidence.
Thank you guys for making these videos, especially for showing both that its okay to make mistakes, and why its important to see where those mistakes are before finishing a job! I'm in Colorado and learned several keys from you: 1.) Measure and measure again before cutting because the placement of the fill spout needs to be dead-on accurate and hang over the tub some, 2.) Buy a pipe cutter to fit inside the down drain, 3.) there are different types of cement for different types of pipes so I need to know what type of pipes I will be working with, 4.) Rough-in the drain first (using a rough-in tool like the Delta Faucets tub filler rough-in "DR4700" and Jacuzzi JMZ-20000, then install finished flooring, then install the tub with drain assembly, 5.) Use plumbers putty as it makes for a better seal than the manufacturer gasket, 6.) lube up down drain, washers, and be careful to not over-tighten hand-tight fittings, 7.) check to make sure there are no leaks before caulking in tub. These are more for me to reference to haha, thank you again!
That's what I love about some of your videos, you don't edit them and we are actually looking at the mistakes you do over the installations and that help us NOT to do the same. Best regards from San Francisco Ca🙏🏼
I just install this drain for a freestanding tub. It was great to see you install the tub and drain assembly. That is my next step! Thanks for all of your videos and positive vibes!!
Thinking about 5 things you're grateful for is a winner! Good tip. Change the way you think, can change your life! Very thorough video, I don't usually do the plumbing on my remodels, but the customer wants to keep her freestanding tub so I might as well learn. Thanks a lot 👍
After watching your vids I've decided not to do a custom shower in my tiny house, instead I'm doing a standalone with shower. This vid is hugely helpful. Thank you!
really helpful video. I just rebuilt my entire bathroom and put in a free standing tub. I ordered the drain assembly and it made the job easier. I had to relocate my drain about 3 feet. I had to bust up concrete floor because the tub we chose was a center drain. The end result was worth the work,
4:40 In a pinch, 2 long screwdrivers will work also for holding the drain assembly from spinning (when the drain wrench doesn’t fit, lol). Have always used plumbers putty, which is what i was taught as an apprentice long ago, & I still prefer using even today......as it just works good💪🏼 A other tip for newbies, make sure your tub drain protective plastic is removed before installing drain (if the tub has a protective “plastic cap”.....cuz ya don’t wanna make that mistake 😂). Thx for the tips Isaac along w/ the vid. Enjoyed watching & learning about some new hardware “assembly”👍🏻 Cheers ✌🏼
Greetings from San Diego. Thank you for the videos and thank you for showing the minor mistakes. We all make them and it helps to see it happen so we can try to skip doing them. Keep up the good work.
This is one of the first videos I've ever subscribed to, I just want to thank you, for explaining things that anyone can easily understand. I love your work. You've helped me, slot. Two thumbs up
Thanks for videos like this where it’s a little outside the comfort zone for some of us tile guys where things like this we would end up telling the customer to get a plumber. Thanks!
Good video i like how youre not afraid to admit your own mistakes on video and correct them accordingly its hard for alot of contractors to do that they'd rather blame someone else
This little th-cam.com/users/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif tub works perfect in our 6 x 6 shower and is easy to get in and out. Also easy to drain.
Great video , as a plumber myself I would have used the washer with the bath waste on the inside off the bath and a small amount of clear silicon and also I would have filled the gap on the bath waste under the bath , keep up the good work and a happy xmas to you and your family ✋️
Isaac, if you install one in a blue moon, it’s worth getting this rough in; however, if you install quite a few a month, those rough ins at 200$/pop adds up really fast. You can use a trap adapter at 5$ a piece instead of the rough in, lift up the tub and drop it on 2 batteries or whatever blocks you have, enough to slide your hand under the tub and tighten the trap adapter nut . Then at the same time, slide out the blocks with your helper and drop the tub in. Don’t forget that floors are never 100% level, those tub feet need to be adjusted at 1/8” or so from the floor and the tub should be dry fitted to make sure it doesn’t wobble. Put silicone over the feet and drop the tub in. Adjust , fill the tub with water half way and open the drain. That’s how you check for leaks… Code says the tub has to be completely sealed to the bottom. So use your choice of sealant and seal the entire perimeter or as much as you can.
You might like plumber putty better, but in situations where plastic (a main component of the plastic is solvent and/or oil of some sort) is involved,...the oil in the putty can and will leech out through the plastic (this is a known fact) over time. Over many years, there is not a track record one way over the other as to how the old standard plumbers putty will do with plastic,. But it is known that silicone hardens much like a catalyzed substance. So once it is hard, it's done and you don't have to worry what will happen over the next few decades. Thank you for the videos.
I really like that tub filler both in style and the way it installs. Then I wandered over to Delta's website and saw how much it costs... ouch! $2170 MSRP plus the install kit for $248. Not cheap, but probably worth it. I see HD has it for less than $1600 and the rough in for less than $200.
We paid much less for everything. We ended up going with a entirely different faucet and i listed all my parts for cheaper on ebay since home depot would not take back "online orders" even though they were new in box.
This particular tub doesn't get secured by anything other than the rubber feet and friction. Personally I like the two-piece applications that allow you to screw it down.
This video was really helpful, thank you! Do you use anything to keep the bathtub from moving on the floor once it has been placed? Such as should you put a silicone bead around the base of the tub on the floor?
Great video highlighting the Jacuzzi JMZ-20000 tub drain rough in. I assume you had to remove the included drain assembly that came with the tub(I've found that most free standing tubs come with a preinstalled drain and flex drain tube of some sort). Great fix for easier install using the Jacuzzi rough in, allowing for easy connection of tub to drain. Good product but, after checking pricing, was surprised to see how expensive it is. Also, love Delta and their rough in valves but again, you need to have deep pockets to afford any of their tub fillers in any finish. Many of them are priced at well over $1000.00. Customer needs to do their pricing research on various brand's rough in valves and tub filler combos before installing a rough in valve. They are not interchangeable between brands, unfortunately and there is a wide variance of pricing among manufacturers. My suggestion would be to choose a tub filler first and then match up with that Mfgs appropriate rough in valve before installing same. This was one of the most thorough tub install videos I have ever seen. Much appreciated.
thank you for the video. we had a contractor install the island tub using this system. unfortunately the tub shifted and there is a small leak. can you tell me if the red part should be loose?
great video man your are the best tiler on here also wish you made a video of how you did the plumbing for the tub filler from begining and how far is the distance have to be from the drain hole to the filler pipes
Good info! So for this type of installation, in case you need to perform any maintainance, the drain simply slides off, correct? We are installing the tub filler behind the tub where the area will be a little tight for any future maintainance of the tub filler, so with this method, looks like we can simply remove the silicone from around the tub and slide the tub out to access the tub filler, correct?
How do you keep the tub from moving? seems as though it's just sitting their. I'm installing a freestanding tub in the next couple of days. Still need to figure out the water supply thing first. I just removed a 1980's garden tub. What a pain it was to remove and the water piping is another story.
Gil Galaxy you add some silicone caulking to the bottom of the tub and the leveling feet to prevent it from moving. Place a bead of clear silicone caulk all around the base of the tub (you do not want this to be visible, so make sure you don’t put it too close to the edge of the tub). Don’t forget to caulk the leveling feet. Make sure that the tub is flush to the floor and level before you caulk it or the leveling feet.
@@melissaalhezayen4108 how do you do this once you’ve placed the tub? Seems like you can’t really lift it anymore with the way the drain is. You have to apply the silicone before you drop the tub?
Thank you for the useful video. Do you have any videos on how to install a freestanding tub inside a shower room? Just wondering what are the considerations and extra steps needed for waterproofing.
Nice vid I find it good to check tightness after removing some plummets putty because some times it seems tight but the putty wasn't finished coming out 😅
Thank you for this video. My wife wanted the freestanding tub, but I wasn't sure how I was going to connect the drain without cutting a hole in the ceiling below. One question, is it possible to ever pull the tub and drain back out if you ever had to get to the trap for some reason? It seems like you could, but has anyone ever done this?
I'm greatful for you man! I'm putting in a freestanding tub this summer. Can't wait to talk to you as I signed up for an hour coaching session! My question will be, over concrete, to waterproof the floor, do I ditra over the drain fixture or put the ditra under it or just cut the hole in the ditra for the drain? Your the best!!
I only wish I had watched video one prior to roughing in my tub drain and tiling...but because of video 1 and 2, I was able to correct my mistake and successfully install my freestanding tub! Any tricks for leveling the tub with the adjustable feet?
putting the gasket on the bottom part of the bath will not prevent water to seep through the threads of the assembly. So if the bath overflows it will fill the bottom of the bath pan (i.e. pan under the bath that takes the overflow water to the drain slits) and find its way through the threads of the pipe assembly and leak out around the pipe threads. I'm even thinking that when the main drain action goes the slits on the side of the drain assembly (which were there for the overflow in principle) might also drip water outside the main assembly to the bottom of the bath pan the same way, which will lead to the threads leaking again.
Isaac thanks for your videos. Very informative. I have a big question. I am installing a large walk in shower with a relaxation tub for my wife. I will be making the traditional mud shower pan and then tile. Can a freestanding tub faucet be installed on a mud bed. It will be in the corner a way from the shower water no not susceptible to constant water. I can't find any videos. Thanks
Great video - will be installing this tomorrow...very helpful. Anyone consider filling the air space of the acrylic free standing tub with bat insulation to keep the water a bit warmer longer....worth it or a waste of money and time?
How do you secure the other end of the tub to the floor? The tub has feet. Do you sicone them to the floor? I have the same tub, and it moves if you bump into it on the end opposite the drain. Should you caulk the bottom of the tub to the floor?
Chris the feet should not raise the tub off of the floor. Level the feet so the tub sits flush to the floor. Then, tip the tub on it’s side caulk the perimeter of the tub and the leveling feet with clear silicone and set it in place. You’ll need help with this. You do not want to see the caulk so dont place the bead too close to the edge of the tub. Once this all dries the tub won’t move.
I had this same question and found no good solution that secured it in place while also allowing me to easily move or lift it in the future. What I ended up doing is taking a few pieces of scrap 2x4, very precisely measured where the inside lip of the bottom of the tub was, and construction glued the 2x4s down. This allowed me to simply slip the tub right down over the 2x4s. My tub is rectangular so the edges of the tub sit nice and tight against the 2x4. If I ever need to lift the tub I can still do so without fighting silicone.
PLEASE ANSWER - What prevents (and how do you know) the TAILPIECE O Rings from buckling up like you said the O rings in the "Shower handle" part? Also, how FAR up does the Tub need to be when lowering the brass pipe into the floor flange.....or does that not matter as you did not say anything about that......I would think it would have to be a minimum of so much into the flange, thus lowering the tub as much as possible....but, then you dont want that brass pipe to go too far into the floor flange????????
Great video! I'm about to tackle the freestanding tub... Does the tub get glued down to the floor? What tub model is that? Thanks for all the confidence you give me! Damian from NJ
Hey Isaac...how do you secure the tub to the floor? Is going to pivot around the drain point...left or right...if I glue those four legs......I will never be able to take the bathtub out in one piece...Thanks
I’ve hooked up multiple free standing tubs but all had over flows witch meant I had to cut drywall ceiling below to ensure the drain was connected properly I wish all free standing tubs had just straight drains no over flows great vid
I think I tightened the brass downspout too much. The plastic seal between the brass downspout and the drain squeezed out inside the pipe just a bit. Can I pull the tub out from the rough in and fix the plastic gasket seal and re-install tub into rough in?
I got the same drain kit over a year ago but am now finally getting around to installing the tub. I may have lost the lubricant or it wasn't included. Is it a specific type of lubricant that it has to be, and where can I buy it? Thanks in advance.

Some bathtub drain kits include those metal extensions and if you don't need it, the threads will screw directly in a standard ABS drain

Tile guy ...pls.dont mess with plumbing😊!
Is this floating LVP? Did you silicone the edge of the tub to the LVP? I can't find a definitive answer anywhere on this.
putting the gasket on the bottom part of the bath will not prevent water to seep through the threads of the assembly. So if the bath overflows it will fill the bottom of the bath pan (i.e. pan under the bath that takes the overflow water to the drain slits) and find its way through the threads of the pipe assembly and leak out around the pipe threads. I'm even thinking that when the main drain action goes the slits on the side of the drain assembly (which were there for the overflow in principle) might also drip water outside the main assembly to the bottom of the bath pan the same way, which will lead to the threads leaking again.

some plastics react to chemicals in plumbers putty and manufacturers provide warnings which is why the silicon gasket was supplied.

Hi, Great video! What kid of tub was installed in the video? I have a client looking for a similar style. Thanks.
Great video! I'm about to tackle the freestanding tub... Does the tub get glued down to the floor? What tub model is that?
Thanks for all the confidence you give me!

Would you use some tape between the brass pipe and the plastic rain on the tub? I always use tape but perhaps I over-value tape in this situation?
Hey Isaac...how do you secure the tub to the floor? Is going to pivot around the drain point...left or right...if I glue those four legs......I will never be able to take the bathtub out in one piece...Thanks
I have a similar spout but the water doesn’t get hot enough.. how do I modify the water to have more hot water come out?
I’ve hooked up multiple free standing tubs but all had over flows witch meant I had to cut drywall ceiling below to ensure the drain was connected properly I wish all free standing tubs had just straight drains no over flows great vid
Do you need to caulk the base of the tub to prevent it from being bumped sideways?
I think I tightened the brass downspout too much. The plastic seal between the brass downspout and the drain squeezed out inside the pipe just a bit. Can I pull the tub out from the rough in and fix the plastic gasket seal and re-install tub into rough in?
I am putting in a free standing tub on a concrete slab and need to order a tub and tub filler but not sure of the best path forward?
What an awesome video... thanks, but how do you apply those techniques to a cement slab?? Cutting a drain and fitting a tub does not seem as easy...
I got the same drain kit over a year ago but am now finally getting around to installing the tub. I may have lost the lubricant or it wasn't included. Is it a specific type of lubricant that it has to be, and where can I buy it? Thanks in advance.
