Potable water lines generally use CPVC (higher max temp. They are more of an off-white color than pure white). Regular clear PVC cement isn't recommended with CPVC and you should usually use yellow/gold instead (as you can see from the old fittings).

Danngg Jeff! I just bought a house 5days ago and this is the EXACT thing I need to do. This is even the exact kind of tub I have and the kind I'm changing it to....Ur soooo ON TIME & TARGET with this video!! THANKS from Baltimore.
Fun tip: With hole saws.. when drilling into plastic.. even on small plastic electrical box.. go in reverse.. Perfect every time! Thanks guys. Keep up the good work.
Good tip on the hole saw kit. I've got the Crappy Tire version (Canadians will know what I mean). When it gets wedged together .... it's a bugger to get apart. I always manage to do it but sometimes I have to lock it into a vice, put a pipe wrench on it, etc. For a homeowner ... it's tolerable but it would drive a contractor nuts.
Plumbing fittings are slightly tapered to avoid “snow plowing” the cement out of the joint when you insert the pipe. That’s why the pipe wants to pop out at first - not from the chemical reaction. Great video of a complete install as always, thanks!!
At 22:57, you were talking about how you needed to prime and use solvent on both ends of the connections, and you put the primed and solvented P-Trap piece onto the unprimed and solvent free PVC straight piece. Why did that connection not need both sides primed and glued?
Great videos mate, I'm a sparkie in Aus and the Bosch holesaws are twice as quick as that hole saw, they have spring loaded pins, simply pull back shank, spin the hole saw on and let go the pins automatically pin the hole saw from tightening on the shank and it doesn't cover the grub screw for the arbour. Try the Bosch mate, you won't regret it, I go through a kit every year and these are the only one that lasts the year.
WARNING 🫵 ... for anyone who is dealing with old installed CPVC water lines, this is the most brittle material there is! We know that Jeff is a brave man but you be careful and DO NOT shake, twist and yank (@42:46) the old supply lines like that! They will snap on you in a second. Before one starts messing at all with old CPVC, MAKE SURE to shut off the main water supply or at least to KNOW where main is located on the property. Also, the glue Jeff is using is approved for many materials including CPVC buuuuuuut, there is a glue dedicated JUST for CPVC (yellow/orange) and I strongly suggest you use that. Although this glue creates a quick bond its curing time is up to two hours (keep that in mind). As we established earlier Jeffs valor and bravery we also know you are not him! At ANY glue point of CPVC fittings/couplings when bonding, MAKE SURE to hold the fittings for 30 seconds until they adhere! Chemical reaction in glue and the shape of the fitting WILL push fittings APPART unless there is a resistance. As with any plumbing work, after you are done, main is open and water lines are pressurized MAKE SURE to inspect visually and with your hand (if possible) for potential leaks. Especially down the old REMAINING line to which you made new connections to. And yes, I am a pro and do not ask me how do I know all of this. ✌️
First-time commenter here. Idk why because I love your videos. Anywho, dont go buy a can opener... just knock the sides of them glue caps with your handy anything and they'll open right up. I was amazed at how many different kinds and sizes and whatnot you have with couplers. And the combined possibilities those create of getting the wrong ones XD These days I come prepared and half a whole container filled with an assortment of them on the jobsite!
Did my first freestanding tub install last fall, using the same drain system you show here at the beginning, and similar faucet mount. Even though i measured things up I missed the 4 inch wide lip on the tub. So the water tends to splash a bit on the edge and onto the floor. I can maybe move the faucet over 2 inches with some wrangling. For now I tried using the flexi-drain (came with the costco Ove tub) instead of the straight brass drain neck which would solve my problems .. but that makes the drain SUPER slow as it creates a bit of a 2nd P trap. Well for me the freestanding tub is just for show as I use shower instead and hot tub outside. Maybe I will move the faucet over some day so I can use the brass neck.
The "one fitting short" problem. Happens to everyone. Even when I buy more than I need, figuring I'll take back the extra bits after I'm done, I still fall one fitting short, one copper crimp ring short, etc. Also, I often get busy and forget to take back the extras!
I keep a box by the door an throw all my extra bits in it and then do 1 trip at the end of the job., always use the same card to purchase and it makes things easy to return.
Always buy more fittings than you need when doing any plumbing project, and more styles than what you need, to prevent extra trips back to the store, you can always return unused ones once your finished, ive almost always needed to use atleast one of the extra ones I get, unexpectedly.
I love your bathroom remodel videos, they're easily my favorite. I just wish every once in a while there was one done on a concrete slab home. Is it even possible to relocate a drain in a slab home?
Hi Jeff, i have a cuestión about this project, i try to add a bath drainer and attach to the bottom of my vanity, i have to run around 6o7 ft of tube and do a p trap, i can do 2in tube and p trap? I think the bath sell 1,5 tube but my plan is run 2” pipe and ptrap I should adapt the 2” p trap to the 1’5 bath tube o go all way 1’5? Thanks for your help, I love you vedeos!
Jeff, how often do you come across asbestos in your renovation projects? Or do you avoid it at all cost and walk away? I’m asking because I’m looking to buy a house, but many in my market are built pre 1979. I hate seeing the potential for a great DIY renovation, but then likely facing the cost and health risks associated with asbestos.
Jeff is Riobel your favorite system? Especially their Shower Valves! After dealing with the water torture of a dripping water heater connection. In changing out the old galvanized to pvc with the Pex b. I was going to go with Delta product Shower valve R series, then I began to watch your Channel. Thanks to you and your family
Hey Jeff, question for ya buddy. I'm renovating my grandfathers house for my family to live in, it currently is built with 1x4 subfloor. should i be re-doing the whole room's subfloor or just replace the problem areas with 3/4" OSB/ plywood.
I thought about it but they didn't have the fittings at my local store so I kept it real. I hare driving for an hour just to buy a fitting at a larger store.
I have problem with our bath tub drain. Who ever installed the drain they used silicon caulk even on the thread. I was trying to replaced but I broke the top of the drain. Now only the pipe thread and chrome thread left. I don’t know how to removed it. Silicon make like both pvc and chrome are glued. Thank you!
I'm going to be doing a bathroom remodel on one of my rentals. It currently has a tile surround that's fine, just the pan has to be replaced. After I'm done for ease of cleaning do they make a transparent glaze to put on the tile so mold and other stuff can't grow in the grout.
would this apply for this scenario? I have a duplex and the bathroom on the first floor is directly underneath the bathroom above and you can hear ppls pee when they go to the bathroom lol is there a way to stop this from either end? The toilet surround or even with sound dampening in the bathroom or through the ceiling in the first floor bedroom?
Jeff please if u read this take apart that water piping and redo it in cpvc glue, u used pvc glue which isn’t the same thing you will have failures down the road. You want to use the yellow or orange colored glue, save urself thousands of dollars before it’s too late
I posted on another video in this series that the easiest for DIYers would be to always use the oatey all purpose cement which works for abs, pvc, cpvc etc.
@@YellowBunchofBananas Yeah I know, not sure how a pro can find where they are either though. There are some ground mapping radar companies out there, may need to employ one of them to map the concrete area to find the tendons.
