Awesome video as usual. I was going to contact you both to tell you… I got my first egg on Wednesday! I felt like such a proud mama! I’m almost positive it’s my chicken Bakey! When I was putting the babies to bed, she jumped down and led me to the egg in her nest box. It’s a pretty crazy story. She literally got off her roost to show me. I sense I have two more eggs from her. Anyway, thanks for the video.
Oh that’s so awesome congratulations!! What a cute story I swear they are so smart. I’m sure she was so proud and showing you! She’s probably so excited about her new egg laying talent that she’s curious to her own little “packages” lol
Thank you! I really needed this! I have a chicken that started this week but she is leaving the area because they think im going to let them out into the yard. I didn't realize you need to train them for a bit to get them to come back to the coop!
We are in NC and it is 90+. My coop is over 100 with bihg built indoor outdoor wall fans. They have a really nice area under some trees that is shaded all day and they like to hang out there with the kiddie pool frozen jugs they sit next to and cool water. I give them frozen fruit and veggie treats. Problem was they want to go into the coop to lay. I can lock them down in the shaded area and today I put their boxes out there with them. I use totes with a door hole cut out. Lots of room and easy to clean. Anyway, they would not go in them. I went and got an egg for each box and they went in. Thank you so much for the advice. I know about getting them trained when young but this worked like a charm in minutes. Not sure why I did not think to try it until I watched the video duh. LOL Still thank you. You guys are awesome.
I have 7 new chickens that will be laying sometime in Feb/March. I just watched your Nesting Boxes for Chickens video. Using info from that, I'll create some nesting boxes, and I'll experiment and add some fake eggs to some of the boxes, and see if chickens lay in the ones with eggs. Appreciate both videos, thanks for the share!
This is great!! All my hens are new & reached the age where they will start laying any time. I have the fake wooden eggs. I put them in the nesting boxes for a week then took them out. I wasn’t sure if I should take them out every day and replace every night. Also they have a favorite spot to hang out when free ranging. Bushes around a tree I call their tree fort. I check there each day for eggs, nothing yet.
The ole fake egg trick :) Yep, I've kept them around for a long time, mostly for the newbies joining the main flock. It really works. I see the hens looking for a box with an egg already in it :)
Sometimes even for the old gals we like the fake eggs if they are all fussing in an egg laying line to lay in their favorite box. They can switch favorite laying spots if they notice the eggs! Like oh someone else likes this one I think I’ll try it out too 😂
thanks for this! Informative! My flock has been adjusting to the additions of 14 (9 week old) chicks to the run & coop & they are not happy with this. I can see their expressions & know that they are grouchy 😮 I have bought a large plastic dog house & they are taking it, but they free range all day & the last two days I have only collected 5-6 eggs when It should he 11. Not sure where they are laying. I have 1.5 acres so it has been a challenge to find the eggs.
Our neighbor just gave us two hens that are already laying eggs. They are use to free ranging which we have been doing but unable to find eggs. It is getting colder out (last night was 30 degrees) so I'm wondering if keeping them in the coop for a few days would be good for them? We have not added a run yet but they have a spacious cozy coop. Any recommendations? Thanks!
Hi! great videos. This is a different subject but my chickens, at times, look like they are choking or gaging. I am suspecting gapeworm and I understand Ivermectin is used to treat it but I cannot find it. Any other solutions?
Oh thanks Such a great video short into the point. We got our first set of eggs this morning. But only 2 were in the nesting boxes. So yes it's been an egg hunt once we realized they were starting. I guess lock down will be the way it'll be for 2 weeks. Thanks
Lol i had a fake egg bit b cauee it was aa diferent color (brown) i wonder if my silkie didnt care and still laid her first egg Christmas eve and again on Christmas in the nest box she wanted furthest from coop door. I get it though. Its the darkest most cozy spot lol
Hey this is your friend re from Foley Alabama how many different kinds of chickens do you have could you tell me that laid all them different beautiful colored eggs. Is it about five or six different kinds and if they are what kind were they that's a beautiful arrangement of eggs you had their. PS how many chickens do you raise all together. I had 68 at one time I had a very big chicken coop. Plus I had 100 quail. I had some khaki Campbell ducks. I had guineas turkeys
Guys! Awesome video as always. Have you ever thought about hosting/creating a chicken 101 class? You have so much knowledge and I'm sure a lot of beginners would really appreciate that! You could really profit off of that.
I'm at a loss. I have 6 young hens and one is just starting to lay, everywhere but in the nesting box. I put a false ceramic egg in the nesting box, I've put her in the nesting box, but so far she has laid in the run and this morning on the coop floor. Any other advice?
Thing about turkey's is you got to keep him away from the wire mesh somehow because when it rains they like to open their mouths of to catch the water and then the end up drowning baby turkeys I'm it's a very beautiful set of colors I like it also what chicken lays that dark brown egg
How about keeping them from laying all in the same box. I have 5 boxes for 12 hens and they all lay in the same box except for one that lays under the poop deck
Is it normal for the birds to move the ceramic eggs around? Also, thanks for the recommendation for My Favorite Chicken Excelsior Chicken Nest Pads. The birds love them and they also stopped sleeping in the nesting boxes as a nice bonus 😊
@jpotenzone I have put fake eggs in their nest boxes recently. One reason was to show the young ladies where to lay the other was because someone was eating eggs. I found out one of my girls had Gape worms. Her shell was very thin and soft. But my Easter Egger "Ester", she likes to gather up all the fake eggs and put them on one nest. Then she adds her egg to the bunch!
I have 2 pet bantam hens that have layed 30 eggs between January 1st and February 6th, 2024, that's excellent, bantams since bantams are difficult to raise due to size and being fragile
I have one nut hen at lays early in the morning she lays under the nasty roost bars😡. I don’t know who does it but it randomly. I even have a nice 4 nest box inside the hen house. I do the same things Kelli and Ricardo. Hope you two have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!🎉
Oh no! Our old Brahma “Bertha” that’s almost 10 years old does that from time to time. I’m almost certain she lays it while roosting 😂 hope you had the happiest holidays! Thanks so much
Funny how they pick a favorite! Lol it’s always the pretty ones that want to stray. We notice when we hang curtains they seem to like the boxes more as the added privacy 😊
I have 5 nesting boxes, but my hens are only using 1-2 boxes. I have 11 hens. Is th I s common. I have 11 hens and only 4 of them are laying. 7 of them are almost 3 yes old. 4 of them are 10 months
Yes that is very normal, they will choose a favorite box and the hens will even wait their turn just to use their favorite lol. The 3 year olds are taking a winter break due to molt or just the less daylight hours. The hens need light in order to make eggs. The 10 month olds will be better layers their first year and should start giving you more eggs soon. If you happened to just get them then they could just be taking a break due to moving stress. Or it’s common for 10 month olds to go through a “light molt” that’s barely noticeable and they could just be growing more feathers and once completed will lay again soon
Hello how we prevent them is not allowing them to sleep in the boxes at night. They poop while they sleep but not while laying eggs (unless there is an underlying health issue) How you can do this is either have your roost bars where they sleep higher than the nest boxes. The chickens desire to sleep as high as possible as it makes them feel safe from predators due to their instincts. Another way is you can fashion something removable to block off the nest boxes at night so they can’t access them at all. Remove in the morning so they can lay. Just temporarily to train them, after a few weeks they should stop trying to sleep there

Great video! I used the fake eggs when my chickens were young and it worked well. 😊
Thanks! Before we blocked off access and we had ravens and crows in our coop our neighbor used to find our wooden eggs in his yard! Lol

Great idea!

Golf balls work well to entice hens to lay, that's what I use to get my teacup bantams to lay year round 😊
